This is actually a historic act of kindness. I am a major Carson fan growing up, seen countless episodes, many more than once. I watch him to this day, I DVR daily on Antenna TV. There’s always that 3rd guest, usually younger, just starting out, not as well know, a singer or comedian who would always get “bumped” due to the other comedy bits or guests who went long. It used to annoy me how they would overbook the show. I always felt bad for the bumpee. Put yourself in their place. You’ve made it! You’re in the Green Room at the Tonight (Effing) Show with Johnny Carson. Your name’s in the TV Guide & it was on the screen before Carson came out from behind the curtain. Ed McMahon said your name. Your family & friends are so proud & excited for you. They’ve got “watch” parties going so they can enjoy your big break with others who love you. Soon an assistant pokes her head in the door & says they’ll have to reschedule, you’ve been cut, we went over the time allotted each segment. No fanfare-you walk out of the studio, hearing the applause & laughter that was stolen right out from under you. That’s show business. Buddy Hacket is the ONLY.....ONLY guest, that I’ve seen, in the 30 yrs! of the Tonight Show to show such kindness, humility, selflessness, a respect for young talent....it made me cry. To speak honestly to the audience, cause they wanted more, he’s genuinely hilarious. To tell the crowd, she’s a fresh talent, she’s been back there waiting, it’s her turn, my turn is done. That just means I’ll have to come see u again & tell some more stories. That’s what they used to call “a class act.” Wow!
Your comment is right on the money. Buddy Hacket was the ONLY one who ever gave away airtime. Here you can see the full episode:th-cam.com/video/5f5irO3tHXY/w-d-xo.html
There were many times the last act got bumped as I recall. Had to be a bummer for the newcomer but they knew it could happen. Buddy was generous, most never cared once they were on a roll. Show biz is a tough gig and generosity is rare.
Thats what i call a true legend.. or Legends including Rodney and George Carlin ect... when they came out on Johnny they knew how to keep it clean and keep it funny.. but their real shows off TV was not G-Rated.. but they all made their mark and will forever be in our hearts. :)
Ahh so I'm going to assume this was after she did the Breakfast Club. I think that movie was the first time I saw her. Always liked her work. It was a quirky role and she did it justice. Thanks for the info :o)
I was wondering if anyone knew who it was TY and God bless you. Btw my first memory of Ms. Sheedy is c. 1980 when she had a story arc for several episodes on Hill street blues . I believe she was 15 or 16 at that time.
@@daviddemar8749 - I just watched this episode on a T.V. rerun, & came here to share Hackett's 4 ball joke with my wife and son. Ally Sheedy had just completed the movie "Short Circuit," & tried to describe the storyline to a bewildered Carson. When she came on stage, after Buddy Hackett's kindhearted, altruistic gesture, Ally walked passed Johnny to give Buddy a hug (Johnny looked dejected standing with arms open for a greeting). She then turned and hugged Johnny. Ally was born June 13, 1962 (turned 18 in 1980), and this episode was in May, 1986, just before her 24th Birthday. I really enjoyed her (& Matthew Broderick) in War Games (1983). Breakfast Club (1985) was good, but years later, Ally really showed her acting skills as the psychotic serial killer "Yang" on four episodes of the T.V. series Psych.
This shows how really smart Buddy was. If you watch how his mind is working he is just so locked in. We have lost so many great talents and replaced them with people that reach for the low hanging fruit.
Buddy Hackett told Carson a story about a situation early in his career where he was working on a garbage truck. His dad saw him on the garbage truck and said, "My son the entertainer." I have never been able to find that skit on youtube. If you can find it, please post it.
Ally Sheedy had gained some initial fame in the movie "War Games" (1983) with Matthew Broderick, and "The Breakfast Club" (1985). Her appearance on this episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (May 7, 1986) was to promote her new movie, 2 days before the release of the film "Short Circuit." Born in June,1962, she was 23 years old at the time of this episode.
Classic buddy story he tells a friend he has a talking dog and him and his friend have a conversation w him. His friend says amazing you're lucky. Buddy says eh, you want him? His friend says are you kidding? Buddy's says no, he never shuts the f*** up.
last Koresh Carson did not, he wanted Dave. It was the NBC execs. Look up the Leno hiding in the broom closet story. Dave did a class act and upped and went to CBS. Unlike that sniveling weasel leno who effed over Conan and got back the show after a few months. Unfunny rat bastard balls on chin leno.
@@TheBigMclargehuge because Carson wanted Dave to have his own show and let Leno kill the tonight show. Its too easy to want to take a show that already exists and make it fit to yourself. Dave could do what he wanted and Johnny helped pay the bills. Johnny knew how hard it is to make a show your own.
Comedy evolves. Do you really find minstrel shows entertaining? BTW, these clips are extremely tame by today's standard and wouldn't even register with the 'PC people' .
Political correctness kills a lot of things. It kills regular ordinary every day dialogue. Political correctness is just there to control the narrative and slant everything toward communism.
no one has ever been able to replace Johnny Carson and who doesn't love the comedy of Buddy Hackett .
You know what's so SAD!?
this....its ALL gone...
never to return.
I miss all those years..and I would watch them all over again too.
Carson and his show was pure class. After he retired late night shows went to crap. None today have the talent that carson and his guest had.
How great of Buddy to yield to the new talent. Very sweet and thoughtful.
Buddy Hackett was really hilarious. I love listening to him.
A true professional with real class, the way he stepped aside to make room for an up and coming entertainer. 👍
I concur 100%.

David Brenner was bumped many times before he finally got on, and this was when the show was still 90 mins.
@David Wilson. Well Put : 👏
I wish they showed her too.

Great comment David. Makes me love Buddy even more. :)
when i watch these clips, i realize how television died with these gentlemen. i miss them very much, ty for the memories,
i am laughing so hard
You said it.Miss them very much. Glad I'm old enough to remember these legends
who watches tv anymore? The edgy stuff is streaming. It's like complaining about radio not having dramas anymore.
Tom Servo Maybe they’ll make comeback?

Buddy busted my chops in Atlantic City in 1985, for sitting in the front. Good guy.
on the taped HBO special?
MikeYac66 I wondered the same thing - that performance was top notch.
You. Guys are so missed
My God what a class act he was aware he was cutting into the next guests time and he relinquished his joke. What a fine man. what a fine gentleman.
What a gig Carson had for 30 years...
Love these oldies

One of the best joke tellers ever
No doubt about it
Buddy Hackett gets a lot of crap, but he was a nice man and a truly funny man. Not a “comedian” but a truly FUNNY MAN!!!
If I can't dance to the music, I don't even want to know what's playing. BAM!!!!!!! Wellllllllllllllllll said Mr. Hackett!
Makes me sad that I’ll never get to see buddy Hackett
Just stick to the memories
The best of times for comedy. I also watch old Password and What's My line episodes just for the pure intelligence and class.
Not to mention Buddy was on What's My Line as both panelist and guest

Johnny loved Buddy and Rodney maybe most of all as top funny guests. Jonathan Winters too. Tops.
Oh Johnny love Rickles too.
I was thinking that same thing ... that Johnny probably loved Buddy the most. Rodney and Winters too. Great call on all three.
Anyone remember the Tonight Show when Buddy tells the wax job story? Absolute classic
Have it on VCR tape from HBO 1986. That whole thing was the BEST!!
Jeez. One of the “new comics” that came up in the late 50s, so very funny and new.
OMG how I miss Johnny Carson.

David Le tterman took it in stride. He didn’t like it, and he did fuss a bit, however he knows the business.
