    The only problem I have when I see your videos is that I want to get nearly every knife you review. Great video, best wishes

    Hi Brian, I was watching this video yesterday and I just bought this knife maybe a week ago and have not used it except to cut up a box. The knife rested loosely in the sheath, but did not snap in. There was no retention at all! It moved and wobbled and fell out easily.
    Then I saw you turn it upside down and shake it and I realized something was wrong.
    I called Taylor Brands and after explaining the problem, the lady there (warranty service) offered me a new sheath, but promised she would personally test it and send it to me tomorrow and if it didn't work to send the knife itself back for replacement.
    These reviews you do really are helpful. And so far CRKT and Schrade are quick to replace faulty knives and sheaths.

    With all modesty, I think that what I am about to say might be the ultimate compliment to your efforts, or maybe I'm just a junkie for SOP. Whatever. The sound on my computer has died, (the tech-head will be here tomorrow to fix that) yet I STILL watch your videos Bryan!! Ha! I can still gather a lot from them from the visual alone. It's not a replacement of course as I like your humor and your rambling....but, I will not miss your presentations.....even without sound, they're still very helpful because the visual is still there.....like chopping, batoning, ferro rod striking...etc. And I could tell that even without sound you had an issue with the jimping on the 31. Stay well brother. All my best from Tucson, Az.

      bill gilmer I hear you. In my opinon, a good knife and the ability to make fire are tied for 1st place as far as survival is concerned.

      Survival On Purpose Down here in southern Arizona, starting right about now, water is number one for us.We're already pushing towards the 100 degree temps and then we will stay over 100 for a few months. However, I do LOVE my "Light My Fire" Mora. Swedish ferro rod and knife...can't go wrong with either.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, when we drove through the southwest in February I couldn't help but think about how tough it would be to survive in such a dry environment. You're right, survival priorities are highly dependent on the what type of ecosystem you find yourself in.

      Survival On Purpose Yeppers, "location, location, location!" We do get some relief from July through early Sept with the Monsoon storms rolling up from mexico. But still, as I know you understand, since you reviewed them Bryan, I carry both a Berkey bottle and a Sawyer Mini filter. We do have small ponds and stock tanks, and other sources of water but I sure would not rely on simply boiling it. Now there is a LOT more water (& rain) up in northern Az in the extensive & deep pine forests.

    I bought this knife a couple of months ago, probably just after it came out. I bought it over the SCHF30 due to its longer handle at the expense of about 1/2" of blade length, which I don't see as a big deal at all. Out of the box I thought it was one of the most uncomfortable handles I've ever held. The scales are smaller than the metal of the tang, I know lots of knives are like that these days, but I didn't think it was very comfortable on this particular knife. The jimping is also very aggressive as Brian said. It was also just a bit small for my hand. I couldn't really see myself using this knife unmodified without gloves. Not for very long anyway.
    My solution was to wrap the handle in paracord. This filled out the handle and made it fit my hand very nicely, really rounded off the edges, and made it extremely comfortable. I'm not sure if it lost any of its "grippy-ness" by covering the jimping with paracord, but it's still very grippy and if I hadn't modified the handle I probably wouldn't use it much at all, so I guess grippy-ness before the mod is kind of irrelevant.
    Wrapping the handle did move the point of balance towards the pommel about 1/2-3/4".
    s28.postimg.org/qelbg2qy5/20150517_141341.jpg
    On a second note, have you gotten your hands on a Gerber Strongarm yet? I'd like to know how the SCHF31 stacks up to the new Gerber.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon Jones Yeah, the handle on the 31 is not what I would call large. And, yes, I actually have a Strongarm in my hands as part of the Gauntlet review circle. I just got it the other day so I hope to have a video out in a couple of weeks or so with my initial impressions.

    I just wanted to say thanks for the review on this knife. Because of it I purchased this knife through SMKW. First thing I noticed pulling it out of the package was the balance... perfection. The second thing I noticed was how well the knife fit my hand, it was as if it was made for it.
    This has become my new favorite knife! The only one that comes close is my Condor Dundee Bowie and that's a whole different class of knife. I wonder if you have ever used it? It's also a great knife, chops better than any knife I found yet. Anyhow thanks for the review, best 10 bucks I ever spent for a knife!

    Great video, got my SCHF31 today. Love this knife, jimping is a little aggressive but completely workable. The sheath leaves a little to be desired, but for $25 this is a solid choice of knife.

  • @carloslvaldez7239

    I made my own leather sheath for this edc. I also slotted the spine just forward of the scales with 6 1/8 inch slots above the name. I love it!

  • @AnthonyBoetger

    Big fan of the channel. Your reviews have helped me make better and more informed purchases for my gear (like my SCAXE2). You asked about more tests to do on your knife reviews, so why not food prep? Preparing fish, and other game; or even, general campfire stuff like slicing fruits, or opening hard shells/ cracking nuts? I, myself, live in the California desert, so clearing thorny brush and removing unwanted thorns from skin/gear is important for me. And I'm also curious about more dexterous carving. You often show the knife making feathersticks or tent stakes, but what about spoons, forks or small shovels and such? Just a thought, but if some of the knives I've been looking to purchased had some of those uses in the video reviews, it would definitely appeal to me.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are excellent suggestions Anthony. I have to tell you the truth, stuff like carving a fork or spoon would take me a long time. So I would easily wind up with five or six hours in a 10 minute video. It's just hard for me to justify that with all the other responsibilities I have.

    Bri my first schrade was the 30 I did a couple weeks of watching ur and other vids never tried chopping but for the price as u can see the 31 extremely similar its the best starter bushcraft it excels in all great sheath and retention like u said born to strike a rod they come with sharp 90 degree angles plus great edge the tpe is probably the most underated grips just cause they dont look fancy I went on to buy scaxe10 dual action magic assist folder the 10 with micarta handles and the 57 which makes a great neck knife

    Good blade, with one exception: the scales. I ditched them with the sheath. I cut into the spine with 1/16" slots just forward of the paracord wrapped handle. Good edc tool for me. Just my two cents. 😉

    Bryan, another great Schrade. Indeed...I would for my tastes take a file and apply a little TLC to the jimping. And I suspect that the notch at the base of the actual blade, just forward of the scales would also throw sparks really well. I know that in addition to the 90 degree spine, the cut out choile on my Shrade 17 and 9N work great on a ferro rod. You are either more talented or braver than I (probably both) because I just know when flipping that large slab-o-steel how I would end up catching it! Ahem! It wouldn't be pretty! Gawd!! Great review as usual! And yes...keep rambling!! I kept waiting for your little buddy the skunk to do a cameo though.....hee hee >;)

    If you are looking for suggestions for your knife reviews, some sort of standardized edge retention test would be great. Every knife review I watch there's someone battoning, splitting, making feather sticks, etc but no one ever puts the edge through a before or after.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's a great idea, I'm just not sure how to go about making it happen. It's just really hard to quantify an edge on the video. It turns out being pretty subjective.

    • @btrswt35
      @btrswt35 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Survival On Purposeheres a ssuggestion. You need some sort of rig or set up where the variables are taken out. Something like a simple machine that holds the knife so the edge is kept vertical, provides linear/reciprocal motion, adds a fixed amount of weight to the blade for downward pressure, and a stack consisting of a certain number/layers of something to cut (maybe phone book paper, poster board, cardboard, etc). Then keep cutting until there is noticeable resistance or it wont cut any more.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heck, it's all I can do to get a simple video recorded, edited and posted. Trying to do that would probably grind the whole thing to a screeching halt.

I bailed before the end. Otherwise decent review. I hope the part I missed was your describing the differences between this one and the SCHF30. +Jacob Zepeda I bought the 30 for my brother and i bought the 31 for myself. The 30 has a bit of a smaller handle (if you have large hands, it's gonna get annoying). I personally do like the 30 more because it feels more balanced and just better built all around. That being said, the 31 is my main hiking/camping knife and it sure does hold an edge. they're both good knives, but if you've got larger hands, go with the 31

      Survival On Purpose I just really apreciate it, most youtubers don't do that. I won't blame you for not answering a message, I was stunned when I noticed you answered this much messages. its nice to see that eventhough you have over 21k subs you are still very close to your subs

    Which knife would you say is better; the SCHF30 or SCHF31?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are both very similar. i think I like the SCHF30 a little more but I really can't say one is "better" than the other

    You peg 'em good. Survival might imply it's not brittle, though. Or, doesn't bend easily, etc..Dig a arrow head out of a tree without messing it up in a bad way and the like

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would I need to dig an arrowhead out of a tree? Seriously, I get your point but I generally abstain from doing full out abuse tests. Anything can be taken to failure. My goal is rather to see how well a piece of your performs under normal or probable use.

    • @garyweaver9222
      @garyweaver9222 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Survival On Purpose I think that's imperative for a survival designation. One may not be able to walk to gander mountain for a new arrow or knife. If there's a biggish rock or tree laying across ones legs, then one might be in a survival situation

    Survival On Purpose Are you sponsored by Schrade knives because they send you knives and you always say good things

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, no. I do like most of the stuff Schrade has sent me but I don't ALWAYS say good things. For example, I wasn't too thrilled with the Rescue Pen, or the Small Kukri, or the Double Bit Phantom axe (I can't remember the number) or a few other things I've tested. But you are correct, overall I think Schrade does a great job of providing an excellent value in a budget priced knife. But they don't pay me. They do send me and other channels a lot of stuff to review because that is one of the ways they get exposure for their stuff.

    Having a clip point on a knife you are using to baton with is not a help. Not that much of a problem either. The handle allows for a firm grip but, while this knife is designed to look weaponish, the lack of at least a half guard means that a hard stab could result in your fingers on sharp steel. Not a real good thing. Feel free to disagree.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No argument about the lack of stabbing ergonomics ;-)

    I see this video was made in 2015 well the SCHF31 I BOUGHT IN 2017 is a literal piece of trash, I chopped a maybe 2 inch fur branch and the blade SNAPPED !!! about an inch above the handle. I have been wearing this piece of junk on my belt since I bought it, looking into Schrade knives now days they are junk made in China and obviously low low quality steel and workmanship. I do believe that before smith and Wesson bought Schrade they were good knives, but now it looks like they are cutting corners and selling garbage.
