In July 2023 we moved to Bangkok, Thailand. But 8/9 months later, we are packing up our apartment and we are leaving. It didn't work out for us here and this is why...
We want to explain why we are leaving Bangkok, what we like and don't about life here, and what's next for us after giving up our flat and leaving Thailand.
We also want to share what we have learned over this period of time, what mistakes we made and why they will only help us grow as individuals and a couple in the long term.

Julia - I can't handle heat and humidity. I don't have a proper thermostat in my body. We retired to northern New England while many elderly want the heat of southern states. We all make mistakes my friends but I don't think you did in this case. You made a decision to try Thailand and then you learned over that four month period that you had found a better solution, one that addressed a number of issues that had risen to the top of your priority list. That's not a mistake. I call it mindfulness. Adaptability. Future proofing your channel, your business. And then you even found someone to take the flat. I declare you both an all around success!!! Yes! I can’t stand the heat. I’m in New York and I hate the North East’s humidity during the summer.

I also hate the heat. We live just south of San Francisco and we get uncomfortable with anything over 72 degrees! I call my mother up in South Carolina and tell her we had a scorcher of a day, etc how awful it was at 75 and she tells me it was 96! I feel so foolish! I also am panicking because one day we will have to leave this area when we retire (can’t afford to retire here) and I have no idea where to go! We’ve been looking at other Mediterranean climates but it is just so damn perfect here…..

the NE humidity in summer is from july through August. NyC is hot becuse of all the concretw and structures. But nothing like the tropics or amazon. Go to Panama city, Panama, Cartagena or Krabi, Bali and then come back and the NE humidity for all of 4-6 weeks.@trcolavi

I just feel like a proud mum sitting here watching you grow and navigate your lives. So it wasn't for you. So what?? You gave it a shot and took us along for the ride, it was great! We seem to be conditioned to worry about what others think about us, I only realised much later in life it really doesn't matter. Your happiness is all that counts, you're both decent young people who have a great opportunity to see the world, more power to you. We packed up 12 years of a life abroad and arrived back in the UK with a suitcase each. Unfortunately our move was forced but we now have the chance to explore new areas again. Can't wait to see where we're off to next! 😀❤❤

First, big hugs to you both.
Second, I hate the heat and humidity too. That right there would be a deal breaker for me but I had friends who moved there for several years, American expats. They loved living there, it was inexpensive and felt really welcomed by the people. When my friend got pregnant though she started to get homesick and little things crept in until they eventually did move back to the States.
There is nothing wrong with changing your mind. It's not a sign of weakness or failure, things just change. Your perspective changed and it's time to move on. You don't need to make excuses, that's just how life is.

Matt and Julia, you have absolutely nothing to apologise for, or even explain your reasons for moving on. It was an experience for you both to base yourselves in Bangkok but you both feel it's time to move on, enough said. It's great to settle for a while, get to know a place but what's important is that you both feel the same way. Also we learn all life and gather lots of lovely memories. Happy and safe travels. That was such an honest and courageous video to make, but I genuinely believe that it's better to cut your losses and move forward rather than keep pretending all is well. Fate definitely played a hand in your decision and I hope this made it a bit easier for you. This was an apartment versus your life and mental wellbeing, so no contest. I adore spending a month in Greece every summer, but could I live there? No, because it's not home. You're both so young and you've got plenty of time to decide where you want to make a permanent base, so just continue with your adventures and when the time is right, you'll know. Sending you both much love and luck.

I like warmth but there is a cut off point where the high heat zaps my energy and add in humidity and yuck. If it's cold, put on more clothing, if it's too hot there is only so far you can go to cool off. So, I'm with you Julia. It's sad to make a large move in living space but it's very mature of you to make a decision to move your location. It's said, everything happens for a reason.

I am so uplifted to watch this video - I feel like a switch flipped and all of the angst of wondering about "did we fail" has so clearly transformed into "glad to have tried it and here we go forward to the next new plan" - I think you will be less inclined now going forward to feel torn about change and feel more forgiving of yourselves. How wonderful for your future planning! Life does contain surprises and so many more of them are ultimately good when you leave room to love what comes next. One wonderful surprise in my life is having discovered you and it makes my day when you present your current experiences. 🥰❤

We have fun watching your exploits and all the everyday stuff. Love your sister, too, Julia. Thanks for the update. You don’t know what you don’t know, and in this case you now know what you didn’t know before. 😜 In other words, when it comes to world travel and exploration, learning through trial-and-error is to be expected. Planning and cost/benefit analysis only gets you so far and sometimes gets in the way of true exploration. We live somewhere that has very high heat and humidity for about 6-7 months out of the year. I love to be outside, but find myself hiding inside, where there is a/c, for 4 months out of the year. I guess its a trade-off? Because if we lived further North, then I'd probably be hiding inside from the worst parts of Winter.

If you continue to stay feeling the wrongness that wouldn’t be healthy in mind or body! Honestly I admire you because when I was your age and older I knew 150% what I needed to do, but didn’t for all the wrong reasons and boy do I regret all those wasted years that I can never get back!

I love you guys. Everything we do is an experience we need, living in Thailand was an experience you both needed. It's not a failure. The roads we take shape who we become, sometimes in small ways we may not even see. I live on the East coast of the US in Maryland's Eastern Shore area. It gets really hot and humid here in the summers and usually pretty good and cold in the winters but its seems that the winters are getting warmer here but it is a break from the heat and humidity. There is no way I could live in that type of climate all the time. I find it exhausting, even more so the older I get. I don't understand those who prefer the heat and humidity over snow...I love snow even though it hasn't snowed all the much over the last few years here. So you two are on to the next experience. I'm excited to see where you decide to go next. Thank you for all you do and share with us, it means so much! xoxoxo

I spent a week in Kuala Lumpur this March... It was in the mid 70s, my favorite temp range here in Seattle, but with the added humidity it felt like 90-100 and the constant sweating was unbearable. I was there exploring future retirement locations, KL , while beautiful, is definitely out because of the weather.

I was in Bangkok last October. As a born and bred Londoner, I found Bangkok faaaar too hot for me! I barely did a third of the things I had planned because all I wanted to do was seek out air conditioning! I feel I missed out on so much because of that, but I just felt completely drained by the heat and humidity. I did do a side trip up to Luang Prabang in Laos, and found the weather a lot more bearable, although I still found myself having to frequently sit down and rest!
Sometimes, a place just isn't for us, regardless of the beauty and fascinating culture. 🤷‍♂️

Lots of comments today already wow. I related to this for several reasons. Hating the heat is a huge issue I have. But overthinking things and trying to make something work when you know it is not really logical is unfortunately something I am familiar with as well. You will be much happier going forward. I predict this because you are having some growing pains in your journey and are learning and growing. It feels like you have just made it over a huge hill and are "turning a corner" to bigger and better things. I think your group tours were going to start this month from what I read. I live in Australia. My wife and I have travelled to various parts of Europe and Asia, with most of the planning done by me. Whilst all the arrangements have worked out exactly as planned, almost without exception, I later felt as though I'd made the wrong decisions.
Despite the considerable costs, I don't really have any problem admitting it to myself.
I think people find it difficult to admit that something designed to be such a great experience was a giant waste of time.

It's part of being a physical human. While our brains are good at stuff, one thing they can't do is fully "pre-experience" as a full body system. Soak up all that grace for yourselves, enjoy your freedoms, and embrace experiences. Much love from Wisconsin.

You are young. Stop being so hard on yourself. You will figure it all out in time. You both are still trying to figure things out and to be sure when the time is right everything will make sense and work out and you will be where you are supposed to be

As someone from Minnesota I loved visiting Thailand but god was I glad to finally leave the heat and humidity. I can empathize with Julia about the heat, Id step outside and immediately start melting. Somehow I could tell I was still sweating when it was raining out.

Tbh I expected this move sooner😊 It did seem like a strange choice considering the location of the tours you announced and…well, Julia’s Siberian affinity for the cold😊😊
I haven’t watched till the end yet but probably Central-Eastern Europe or even the Baltic region would make more sense?
PS I’m with you on that, I hate tropical climates, the humidity, I get permanent headaches, I can’t tolerate it for more than few days. And I lived in a semi-tropical region a good chunk of my life, still can’t get used to the humidity on top of the heat.

I totally get the heat thing. I'm the same way. I live on the coast of Oregon and it is perfect for me. We get around 10 days of 80 degrees and I melt. The rest of the time it stays around 65 degrees in the summer and 45 degrees in the winter. Sending peace-filled thoughts to everyone.

The section between 2:45 and 3:14 fooled me while watching as the bird chirping in the background has the same sound as my notification sound on my Xiaomi phone. I kept looking on my phone without realizing the sounds are coming from the 5.1 Soundbar above the TV set. 😅😅

Guys I wish u all the best, Matt you’re so right that it’s totally okay to make mistakes - I trust 100% you’ll find what’s right for you at the right time. And Julia I can relate sooo much I am a massive overthinker too. A few years ago I bought a boat that was supposed to be my “forever home” only a year and a half later decided I wanted to travel instead of. It’s not the end of the world. And I have this little feeling of where you might end up moving to hehe 😅 sending lots of love your way - wherever u are. From England xxx

We lived in SE Asia for two years. I (Brandon) am Canadian. I grew up with the cold. In those two years, I NEVER even REMOTELY got used to the heat and humidity..so you're not alone. 😂
The reason we ended up leaving was mostly due to the climate.
We planned on buying property in Spain, moved there at some point, and also decided within a few weeks that we didn't want to buy anything there.
My Canadian blood isn't meant for a hot climate. At least not permanently. I've confirmed this 100%.
We are headed back to SE Asia next year to travel. We both love it dearly for so many reasons..but I'm already dreading the heat and humidity. The nice thing about not settling is that at least you can head to a colder climate every now and then for a break.
Looking forward to seeing what else you guys have planned. 😊

Julia, I have also had the experience of lots of the people around me preferring the heat and which had the effect of feeling I was strange. Your talking of this made it clear to me that I cannot continue living in such a hot place (Kerala, India), and is giving me permission to make a change. BTW there are plenty of us who can't take too much heat and humidity! ❣️

You guys are in a place in your life where you CAN responsibly experiment. It’s ok if it didn’t work out for you in Thaliand. That’s not a fail. you’re taking the right risks and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and you just move on. I wish for you to find your home soon. You’re good people.

Home is where the heart is. Don't try to over think it as it is not a mind issue, it is a heart issue. Trust your heart. I left 'home' at 18 and spent 30 years living literally all over the USA. I am now back 'home' (Upstate New York) where it all started years ago and I am at peace. Also, do NOT feel bad about not liking the heat. I spent 4 years in Arizona and years later spent another 8 in New Mexico. I hate the heat and will never regret leaving it. Give me a cold winters day in the Adirondacks any time! Follow your heart.

I get it. If you are uncomfortable every time you step outside your door it is huge. That is why when I was younger, I moved from the U.S. state of Wisconsin to the Seattle area and it became my base from the time I was 17 until 2022, a span of 40 years. Although I was away from my family (parents and siblings) I felt so much better physically. Then with the deterioration of things in the U.S. as far as the economy, the violence and the catastrophic loss of person freedoms, I no longer felt like I could find refuge anywhere in the U.S. That is one more reason I live here. The weather is pleasant year round (compared to Wisconsin which is, hot and humid in the summer, frigid in the winter) it is relatively free of violence, and here there is freedom, something missing in the U.S. Sorry I had to resort to watching you on U tube, but Odysee is having Issues right now. Greetings from Batumi .

Yes. This I think is because living somewhere is so different than visiting. And you needed to live here to know what you now know. You cannot think your way through a feeling. You had to experience it. And I hate the heat. :))

I feel the same about heat as you do, Julia, and even moreso about humidity. My ancestors all came from Scandinavia or, more recently, the prairies of Canada, and I am drawn to the north when I am anywhere above the Equator. To me, the Bangkok weather is torture. That my beloved husband died of melanoma from sun exposure has just heightened those feelings. If I could live anywhere (and did not have grandchildren in the U.S.), I would live in Finland or New Zealand. I guess we'll have to wait to see if you decide to have another headquarters home now and, if so, where. Best wishes!

Julia, I totally understand. I hate heat and especially humidity. My mom and I both do a quick barefoot run in the snow each winter and my sister, who loves heat, thinks we are nuts! (We are!) I love being outdoors but not if it’s hot and humid. As for your decision, it seemed like the right choice at the time and it’s ok that you’ve discovered it wasn’t the right one. You learn through your mistakes and you owe no one. Not even us, your followers! Your life, your choice. I grew up with a parent who taught us that if you make a choice, you stick with it. Well, I had to break that thinking as I got older! I’m 66 and I do want works for me, so long as I hurt no one or anything in the process. It’s your life. Live it, girl!

I was surprised you decided on Bangkok as a base because you, Julia, love the cold. I was happy you were closer to Australia but if the climate isn’t right for you then you need to be where you are more comfortable. You will find your happy home base somewhere in the world.
