The truth is, I love watching people pick apart at SAO solely because I aspire to be a writer. Whether you guys do it jokingly or seriously, you should be aware that whenever you guys slaughter this show, you give out advice on what to avoid. For example, the reason I subscribed to this channel is because of the video "Fixing Alfheim- The Worst Part of SAO". During that video, you took scenes from the series and turned it into what I would say were rather beautiful and much more impactful scenes compared to their dull counterparts. You have taught me that there are many ways to properly arrange a scene, which has become invaluable knowledge to me. Soon, other SAO videos got recommended to me, and watching them honestly taught me a lot as a writer. Even the show itself taught me some things, so points for that! What I'm trying to say is that despite being a mediocre anime, it's proven to be quite helpful to me. That being said, this doesn't mean that I wish for this anime to continue with this trend, in fact, I hope that it'll become better. Perhaps one day, I could watch this anime and instead of learning what to avoid, I would actually take points from it and be inspired by it.
I wouldn't call it Beating a dead Horse but more of an Autopsy of a Dead Horse, & that's why I love watching you dissect SAO to its very last detail, everything that went wrong & everything that works it goes from "this is how the sausage is made" to "oh & also here's how the tools for making a sausage are made" as for why is still popular making SAO videos, I would say is mostly you
I usually lurk instead of commenting, but since you asked: I keep coming back to your (and others') SAO videos because I'm always impressed with how many different ways SAO can serve as a good example of how not to make an anime on a variety of levels. I'd say that rather than thinking of SAO like a dead horse, it's more like the world's worst onion--you can keep peeling back the layers to find something else lurking underneath. Having said that, I don't watch just your SAO videos, and I don't think I even found your channel through that--I'm pretty sure it was from one of your What's in an OP videos, though I can't remember which one anymore.
Lol if only you watched videos of someone who actually knows and understands stuff about SAO. You aren't gonna get shit from Mother's Basement. He doesn't know shit about SAO. Neither do Digibro, Anisins or most people who made hate videos on SAO.
@@beastunleashed657 the hell? You just took youtubers that share the same opinion as you and seem to think sao is a timeless masterpiece. I’m sorry if people who criticize sao are not on a high enough intellectual level to “understand” it. You just can’t seem to accept that sao might just be garbage.
Wow, that’s a good analogy actually. And it made me think of a funny ProZD video too XD *_Young man_* *_There are leaves all around_* *_I said, young man_* *_Eat a leaf off the ground_*
Well SAO was my first anime. I loved it when I first started, however as I watched more and more anime I understood why so many people disliked it. As of now I don't hate SAO, I think the character designs are cute. I won't argue against/with people who dislikes the show partly because I understand it's flaws and problems. But I won't ever regret watching it, because despite all it's problems it was my reason to continue watching anime. When I watch youtubers ranting and shitting on SAO, I honestly find it very funny and enjoyable, primarily because it amazes me how relevant and massive the series has become. And how many flaws I didn't notice when I was watching it. Understanding why people dislike SAO with valid, and good arguments is an awesome way to spend my spare time every now and then. Have a nice day/night wherever you live, peace out!
i think a lot of people forget that you can not only LIKE garbage anime, but pick it apart for its flaws and still find some enjoyment in it. theres some really subpar shit ive seen in the past, but they were stepping stones on the way to learning what good anime is. i will trash SAO mercilessly, but i don't dislike it in the least.
I agree, back in the day I thought Infinite stratos and sword art online was considered "good" anime because of their "popularity", in retrospect I understand why they got so popular to begin with, and honestly if I were to watch them today I really think I would of dropped them, atleast infinite stratos if anything. But looking back and talking shit about an anime I watched ages ago is really funny sometimes.
I think people like trashing SAO because subconsiously its a lot of wasted potential. The concept is solid but everything fell appart because of beginner mistake. I never got so frustred at an anime after the first arc, so I dropped here. First episode was solid but then its hell's pit. Shitty video game, wasted character, pvp teased but not used.
personally, I just watched SAO after watching the "entirety" (as much as is currently out) of One Piece and Bleach in addition to multiple other animes and I pleasantly liked SAO, at least the first 14 episodes or however many it was for it actually taking place in SAO, although the ending seemed rushed and the other 11 episodes are not to be spoken of with how bad they were, I always keep thinking its season 2 but its not, I would have liked to have seen the SAO portion of SAO be the entire 25 episodes and have had more story. GGO was alright and mother's rosario was a nice side story, haven't watched SAO3 or the movie and soon to be new movie but the show has some good parts and is certainly enjoyable, and yeah there are many valid reasons to several bad elements but other than that the good parts that are there in the wasteland that is the rest there is some enjoyment to be had and I personally liked it quite a bit
"Useful", MB ponders if the word is right. But incredible Entertainemtnt AND learning-from-mistakes can be derived from Good-Faith-Criticisms. And good News: They sure become more popular these days. Jay Excis Video abouz Doctor Who, Madvocates Coverage of The Flash and Hbomberguys whole channel, but especially his Sherlock and RWBY Essays are now-legendary. Comments say all the time you do NOT even have to know the Show at all to enjoy the Essay about it: Yes, even regarding the FIVE HOUR ONE. Wow?
CleverYou TubeName but a great show Hellsing Ultimate gave us hellsing abridged. Sao abridged isn't on that level. Sao abridged isn't worth all those people who thought sao was good.
Isaiah Mc Intosh I'd... have to disagree, really. I think SAOA is incredible, but I think I think that BECAUSE it fixes so many problems from the original. Furthermore, it's not restricted by TV standards; they'll go as far as they want because they can. I do get your POV though. ALSO FUCK YOU SAOA IS WAY BETTER HELLSING A IS TRASH REEEEEE
But you can easily ignore the dead horse and move on to other shit. I can't be the only one annoyed that people are still making SAO hate vids right? What more is there to say about a show from five years back. And even with the movies, who cares? No one is forcing us to watch it.
Probably not adding too much to the conversation, but I think it's because most are scared of becoming incredibly unpopular if they admit that money is a factor. As for me, I think it's perfectly fine to try to make money, and to try and make as much as possible. As long as you work hard to create enjoyable content that doesn't aim to bring down others (so no Leafy's), and money doesn't become the *main* focus, there isn't anything wrong.
Yeah, you covered all the reasons why keep clicking on these: I loved SAO. Still enjoy the first arc (Thoroughly flawed. But so are most of my favourite movies/games/manga/books). I wish the second arc didn't exist (even though there are plenty of individual parts I enjoy). I keep wondering what went wrong, and WHY. Log Horizon may be a much better version of "stuck in an MMOVR", but without perma-death (for PCs), it misses out on the horror angle (which i find fascinatingly engaging). So I imagine it's generally true for most of us. Someone in the comments mentioned that it's less "beating a dead horse" and more "dissecting a dead horse". To find out how it died, and why. How healthy it was. Was it a racehorse or a workhorse? Despite the answer was it used for racing or labour? I appreciate the honesty throughout this video. That might also be a contributing factor to why we keep coming back ;)
I love this analysis of the show. I knew "beating a dead horse" wasn't really the right term for the job. I think this is definitely a major part of why SAO is so interesting.

Idk maybe SAO is a lot of things that represent the bad side of modern anime. It's like that type of junk food that, while you eat it, tastes good, but when you're finished, you feel gross.
So as an alternative people try to make food taste as unpalatable as possible while adding all the essential nutrients then say "it's an acquired taste"
I know SAO is popular and there are significant and logical reasons why its popularity won't (and honestly, shouldn't) die, but I'm pretty sure the answer to why discussion of it won't die is actually just "Geoff Thew".
It's generalized and basic enough to jump into, which is why it got a lot of its popularity to begin with. But, with that same logic, it's also generalized enough for people to understand easier when things go wrong, which is why it's just that much easier to turn its popularity against it and use it almost like how Star Wars is used in film schools to highlight specific factors about it and how they relate to other series in broader terms. Whether reviewers know it or not, it's basically the perfect platform to bring people's attention to a problem of really just about anything from writing to characters to editing and show them what it looks like when that stuff is done wrong in a way that they can relate to other things.
The SAO anime may be pretty bad. But has anyone read the SAO: Progressive manga, its a reboot of the Aincrad arc floor-by-floor with Asuna as the main character, and i think it's genuinely a lot better written. If SAO: Progressive had an anime i'd watch the shit out of it.
Asvaldr Nightingale there are rumors of a possibility they might make a anime of it which I hope. Cause Progressive is one of the best things I read. Kirito and Asuna are awesome and so much better than in the anime.
Congratulations, "Why does he keep making SAO videos" people. You've directly spawned another SAO video because you couldn't stop specifically talking about SAO. I hope at least someone out there feels the irony in this, lol.
This is like the people who hate on a person they disagree with politically, and thus spread their beliefs and name all over the web and give them a ton more prominence than if they just didn't rant about that person.
Or, hear me out, the responsibility is really with the person who decides to actually make a video on SAO, not with the 5 dum-dums who can't stfu about SAO in the comment section....
SAO was my first anime that I actually sat and watched the entire thing. I've since watched dozens if series and picked a new favorite, but it's nice to actually objectively look at what was once my favorite anime.
I like SAO it was my gateway into anime, I enjoyed it, I still enjoy it and i will probably keep enjoying it. Yes i recognize it has some glaring flaws but I still like it regardless. As for why I'm watching this video it's because i enjoy your style of content creation and almost all of your videos can teach me something I didn't know about the medium I love so much or entertain me when i'm having a bad day. But when i watch some of your SAO videos I feel like I'm being shamed for actually liking the show. I know this isn't your intent but it's just so visceral when you bring up how millions of people hated watching it looking back. Maybe it's because i'm not an anime critic so I don't need to be turned off by a shows flaws but SAO legitimately means a lot to me and its it's helped me become the person i am today just a massive anime nerd. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Wow, you completely hit it on the dot. I'm super impressed, I feel the exact same way. I honestly couldn't have worded that any better lol. . back when the show aired about 5 years ago there were so many fans, but honestly, the anime community beat SAO so hard that you legit first came ou got "bullied" for being a fan of the series. it funny though, because arguably SAO is one of the most influential anime in the 21st century as the amount of "newcomers" brought in were absolutely insane.
Why do you like SAO? For me, a shows suspence and it's characters are the most important thing. I liked the first episode but as it went on i even fell asleep watching it. Nothing interesting ever happened to keep it entertaining. I'm just curious why so many people see it differently and what i'm missing.
Personally, I like to hear the specific issues. It helps me to avoid those problems in my own writing, and to some extent it is me just jumping from video to video to try and fill the silence.
i think we're brothers For the love of god, you SAO haters really exaggerate things, you make it sound like if SAO is the worst thing in existence when it is not even close to that. And you guys are really good at begin assholes as well.
Someone made a post that was on the front page for a while talking about how Mother's Basement leeches off of this show and shit and can't get enough of it. Check it out. Should be under the controversial tab still unless they took down the post Edit: Found the post again under the "hot" section on the second page. The title of the post is "And mothers Basement Back at it again..."
I don't even need to look at the Subreddit. This comment section is toxic enough. I've counted more "You're just desperate for views" comments than I've seen likes on the comments that aren't about that (and there's hundreds of likes on the comments that aren't accusing him of being desperate for views.) Crazy fanatical fanboys are the worst. Seriously. No, we can't have a different opinion, we're just being controversial for attention, because doing things specifically to spite them makes more sense to them in their oxygen-deprived brains than... you know... preferences, like why some people prefer certain foods, which is something we grow up constantly exposed to.
As a frequent on the SAO subreddit (for good fanart and other things), that's essentially what that place is. If you post anything even SLIGHTLY critical of SAO, you can kiss your karma goodbye as you'll be downvoted to hell. Its really sad, because despite me saying that, I've met some chill people on there. It just sucks that for every one person I meet that will have a civil conversation, there's about 50 that come in to just ruin the experience for everyone
The depressing part is...? I'm not even surprised. People have been getting absolutely insane with their outrage. "Oh no, someone gave that video game a 9/10, freaking hater, let's DDOS their website and give them death threats and drive halfway across the country to leave dead animals on their balcony with a note that they're next if they don't apologize for not giving it a 11/10 because it's impossible for them to not like it; they're lying!" Ugh. Seriously. I hate people, sometimes. Signed: Someone else who feels they can't have a civil conversation online anymore due to people coming in and ruining it for everyone.
I find it fascinating that a show can do so many things wrong and yet be so popular that 6 years after it's original airing people are *still* finding new flaws to point out in the series
The Room got me into critical analysis of visual media almost 10 years ago. It's so much easier to learn while watching poorly made things than masterpieces. I'm not an expert at critical analysis in any way, especially when it comes to anime, so I really appreciate your opinions on it, and learning why I should hate bad shows, even if they are something I initially like, really helps me grow. Thanks MB!
Personally, I'm glad to see a some contrasting opinions that AREN'T mindlessly fellating this series like it's seed is made from molten Nestle's chocolate, and that it's not minutes of squawking loudly like a 2Chan denizen, but someone having an ACTUAL fact-driven opinion based on having watched the series. Those who dismiss someone's opinion because they don't like SAO and just call them 'bandwagon haters' are vitriolic, cancerous individuals who are part of the problem.
Yeah, I completely agree, but people who dismiss someone's opinion because they like SAO, and just call them "tasteless trash" are also a part of the problem, and there are way more of those people. It's way easier to find people hating on the series than finding people who enjoy the series. I'd imagine it's mostly because the people who enjoy it aren't usually the ones getting angry about it on the internet. At least not until they are insulted for liking SAO.
Ravensgale My issue with Geoff in this case is that this is basically the first SAO video he has made where he shares his negative biases towards this series. None of his other videos about SAO have admitted his biases, and that is a problem. It doesn't help that most of his other SAO videos spew pretty much nothing but bullshit factual inaccuracies and incorrect details that are easily disproven.
Wait, where are you seeing people mindlessly fellating this series? All I ever see are "shut up, its fine, just have fun" and "baby's first anime". I don't think I've ever seen it praised uncategorically. In contrast, all I ever see on the critical side are frothing lunatics with good vocabularies that cannot stop talking about it. I watched the show specifically because of all the hate it was getting, and my last straw was actually Mother's Basement's video about SAO as a video game. I could practically hear the laddle gouging out the floor under the barrel. SAO is not high art. The english dub is terrible, the plot feels like an empty carcass stuffed with balloons, and many of the characters are bland as all getout. Which is pretty much how I could describe a very large number of anime series. It, like many others, had some cool bits, but, unlike many others, it committed the cardinal sin of becoming popular. For that, it was pilloried, crucified, and burnt to ash. Now, all because of Mother's Basement, I'm halfway through the Alicization Arc and have read SAOP a half dozen times, as well as caught up with the mangas. The core is strong, it always has been. And now Reki Kawahara has the skill and experience to bring that core to light.
buca117 as a gamer myself, Geoff's "SAO Is a Bad Game, Too" video is in my opinion the worst one by far. I could tell that he had little experience with the kinds of games discussed, which explains why he got so many things wrong in that video. Even on a critical level, SAO deserves some criticism. But it doesn't deserve to be beaten and bashed by critics just because something they view as generic became popular. Anime in my opinion is meant to be enjoyed, not something to be endlessly bashed critically because it made some mistakes and doesn't appeal to you. Objective standards are inherently subjective, my friends.
Honestly, I don't get tired of it. I love analytical videos and there's always a lot to learn from SAO when talking about its numerous misgivings. I'd probably continue to watch videos about them.
The reason I love hearing about SAO is for the reason you mentioned. It's an interesting show to study and take apart because while there are parts that work, there are also many parts that don't work. I myself plan to make a fantasy story similar to it (in premise). To me, SAO is an instructional Manuel on what NOT to do.
Is that not the truth my friend. I also find it a super motivation (motivation a resource I can never find) by channeling the sheer hatred from reading into actually writing, and trying to write something that's actually good. So I guess you could say in SAO's failures....it paved the gateway to countless other things. Praise be its shittiness.
You started talking the desire to know more about why you feel a certain way about SAO, and I could really relate to that. I come back to this again and again because, while it was hardly a gateway anime for me, SAO WAS one I enjoyed, especially at first. And I couldn't quite figure out why it was that I just kind of... lost interest while they were airing. I discovered TVTropes and the time-destroying black hole that is their website years ago, and very quickly succumbed to 'TVTropes Will Ruin Your Life' when I started seeing the tropes EVERYWHERE, to the point that everything felt like it was predictable or if I couldn't predict it in advance, I felt like it was written directly to defy a specific expectation. Thankfully, it didn't take me long to instead see it as enhancing my watching experience, because now I can see the /why/ of how characters are written or act sometimes. I can argue why it makes sense for this protagonist to not just 'swing the bat' or 'get in the damned robot.' Reviews like these help break down a lot of things in the same way, and I appreciate the clever way of pointing it out that you, Explanation Point, and even abridgers like SomethingWitty have. I get to appreciate shows in a whole new way, from your perspectives, and with information I may have missed or not been privy to. So... Thanks!
Okay, because I have things to do, I'm going to attempt to dive in and grab a link real quick and get back out... *Three Hours Later* .... tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SugarWiki/TVTropesWillEnhanceYourLife I think I've reached this point, good luck getting there too, and sorry if bringing this link in here causes temporal distortions in your region! ^_^
SAO was the first action anine I really watched other than Naruto or DBZ (which I really didn't know were anime at the time.)) So it's very memorable to me, even though I can see its flaws I still enjoy it.
It’s one of my first anime, and I watched it while it was airing with my brother. It helped us bond in a really special way because it was the first time that we had something in common. So SAO its really social, with its flaws and everything.
My reaction to the title: because youtube updated its policies regarding views and channel monetization. SAO always does well. So it's wise to mention it during times of monetization problems.
I may be an oddity, but I'm subscribed to your channel (and super eyepatch wolf) even though I don't really like anime. I find the interest, enthusiasm, and criticism for anime presented more interesting than actually watching anime.
Well, it's because it was a wide spread case of an Anime that had a great premise and hooking first episode but couldn't keep that locomotive chugging at full speed until all the coal and water ran out. This is nothing unique as there have been many Anime fans will claim "start out excellent only to drop the ball near the end or almost right out the gate," the polar opposite of shows that "get good later" after a supposedly "shitty start." However, with how many Anime fans SAO attracted and created no less, the backlash was to be inevitably immense when ALO rolled around. As you said in previous videos, it came at the right place and the right time. It feels like the betrayal, a show that got you hooked on a medium only to find that your first time wasn't worth crap.
2:00 The answer to that is that the bulk of the arena are likely NPCs, which we know there are tons of in SAO so I don't really see how thats necessarily a plot hole. It actually makes sense that they would be considering that if the creators even bothered to program it into the game they probably would have realized that there would most likely never be enough players to fill it any one time, so in order to avoid it looking awkward programed NPC's to fill in the gaps.
Was it mentioned in the light novel? I can’t remember. There’s a lot of details that got left out in the adaptation that created plot holes in the anime’s story. Not that there weren’t any to begin with, etc. You get the point.
+Trogloglation It wasn't mentioned in the source material, I'm just using logical deduction to find a likely plausible explanation for it to demonstrate how its not necessarily a plot hole as he's claiming it to be, even if it was done on accident. I just accidentally left out the word "likely" in my initial comment, but I fixed it now.
Top Snek it just sounded familiar, so I asked to check. The idea of NPCs filling in for the lack of players feels very familiar. Also, calling it a plot hole is just wrong since a vague background is clearly not something that’s part of the plot, it’s an incongruity at worst.
To me SAO is a comedy at this point, i like people thrashing them cuz man is it fun. I really want sao to continue since i really do dislike it in a positive way, it's such a weird feeling i don't think i've ever felt this way about anything else tbh
I've debated why I watch your videos for a while, being I only have a passing interest in anime, and I believe I finally figured out how to sum it up concisely: I enjoy listening to people talk about things they are passionate about.
SAO was my first anime I watched. I found it on netflix and thought the idea of being trapped in a video game was pretty cool. After watching other animes I realized how SAO isn't that great, but I still can't stop myself from watching it every so often. Usually as background noise while I do something else.
I have to agree with Eireto. I initially watched SAO because I heard it was bad but was great AMV fodder. After watching it I wondered why it had gotten the popular opinion of it being "bad". While it was no Trigun, it was certainly no where near the "School Days" bad that, looking back, kept getting incrementally worse. I watch some reviews that tore into SAO and while most had few good things to say, it seems that people were jumping on a bandwagon instead of actually analyzing the show and were either forgetting or ignoring plot elements or had no idea about real world game mechanics and management that would apply to the story. The example of Kirito "hacking the game" to make Yui into an item to save her but not logging everyone out of from the management console. This actually poses no problem to the story as it was hinted at along with the game development aspects of the game in the first episode. As a causal gamer I have played the MMORPG RuneScape. I've even played on the beta servers. During my time on the RS beta servers, I had access to menus that were not part of regular game play to give access to areas and items without meeting quest or kill prerequisites to allow for testing. Now with this knowledge in mind you have Kirito being a beta player from the game's beta release and was a computer nerd that was researching what he was playing. Why Kirito not logging everyone out was completely logical sound, with real world game development and maintenance practices in mind, was hinted at in Kirito's pause when he and Klein were talking about methods to log out in the first episode. During this pause Kirito mentally when through the commands he was familiar with from his time during the beta test. His familiarity with the game is also suggested by his boasting in the second episode where he claims to have gotten higher in the game than any other beta tester. His saying there was no way that they could logout through other means was from experience. The logic of his saving Yui is also related to this concept of him being a computer nerd familiar with the beta player management console. I've seen video logs of Halo game play where players could enter and review the game content then save the video else where. Fails of the Weak released by Rooster Teeth, the makers of Red vs. Blue is a prime example of this. The system was already suspending Yui's program. Kirito was just saving her as a recording item like the message device he got back in episode 3 from Sachi or like Pina's heart feather in episode 4.
Excuse past me, it's just this series had great potential and I liked it at first, until the goddamm incest, which is deal breaker for me. No matter if it got better after that, i simply can't enjoy it. But if you or others do, power to you.
Newgreen Nah, it's the animated Matrix sequels lol...and even those are better than SAO(Agent Smith, the Architect and the Merovingian>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Klein, Agil, Aincrad Asuna and GGO Sinon>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>the SAO series).
As one of the people who's mainly here for SAO, I'd say you more or less nailed it. SAO was one of the first anime I ever watched, on recommendation from one of my nerdier friends, I think (hope) before the Alfeim arc. I started out thinking it was pretty cool and had an engaging premise, and then I got bored halfway through the Aincrad arc (goddamn, the characters in this show are boring), stopped watching, and have only started watching anime at all again in the last year or so. So yeah, watching you pick on the show that turned me off a medium that I do genuinely enjoy on the occasions that I do watch it is pretty cathartic.
I subbed for your analysis in general, since I want to become a writer/creator myself and it's always good to hear why something works (or doesn't), even if it doesn't apply to your specific field.
Your video about the Legend Of Heroes games brought me to your channel. you're just about the only one who has made a quality discussion video about those games. it's still one of my favorite video's from your content. Cheers! keep it up.
Wait wait wait, _live-action SAO?_ How the frig is that supposed to work? The world is _set in a video game!_ We're not quite at the point that we could convincingly pass live-action off as video game footage, even without bringing up the whole "fantasy elements of the world" thing. Also...the "why" comes up. Not "why are they remaking SAO," I get that, but "why do they feel like remaking SAO as live action is going to be better than remaking it as animation"?
Timothy McLean there's a movie coming out this year called Ready Player One that's doing just what you're talking about. I don't think it will be any good, but it exists.
From what I've heard, it's a bit different, focusing more on the social-commentary stuff and less on being SAO. So there's some hope! I've also heard some disappointing things about the book, though, so...
Ready Player One is the only film i personally know of which seems to have managed this, video game world, but that is all CGI. I have no idea how they are going to do this. My only thought is that the user interface will all be CGI, the monsters CGI, but the environments and characters will have to be filmed live action with the CGI layered over... God this is going to be a mess...
I’m here because I want to write a better Isekai story.Places like Royalroad or Wattpad have some much trash to sift through I legitimately can’t tell if somethings good anymore.
LookADistarction -All you have to do is make a fanmade sequel to The Matrix.- Watch the Animatrix short called "Kid's Story". The Matrix is actually reverse isekai, but use that as a start-off point.
Well for starters if your protagonist protagonist is a thin male (already unintellectual) he should be the whiniest, most pathetic, most cowardly, and most incompetent abomination the world has ever brought into existence. This is not so you can develop the character, he should never become good at combat or anything, but instead this is a direct insult to the fans. Also don't make him look cool, he should be boring looking. Really boring looking The only people capable of fighting should be women and ugly gritty men (and add only one or two of those) most of the women should also be really edgy and abusive to the Male MC as well as to say to the viewers "your Waifu would barf at the sight of you". Of course while this is more a shonen thing making the long haired girls cut their hair short is really intellectual writing, so make sure to add that.
Honestly, I only discovered your page because I was looking for an SAO review. Little did I know, there was a page (your page) that talked in depth about all my favorite animes! So even if SAO is terrible after the Ainchrad Arc, you’re right. It’s a great discussion topic and I’m always down to hear more about it. Glad I found your page.
Why I'm here? I saw MatPat's video about how much SAO would be to make not because I wanted to hear about the show, but because it was the newest video out at the time and I wanted to watch something. During the said video he recommended yours on how to fix the issues with SAO. I watched it, thought it was good. Didn't subscribe though. Few weeks go by, I get a recommendation on an older video you did about why Kakegurui is a bad gambling anime. And that was the video that made me want to subscribe. And that's how I got here.
IT ALL COMES FULL CIRCLE! BTW, you may enjoy a game theory parody MB did way back about Breath of the Wild, if you haven't watched it already. Seeing as you're a fellow game theory fan, at least I'd assume. If you've watched it already then I guess this reply is useless. Oh well, maybe some other user will see it and check it out.
Look, I know SAO has a lot of problems but idk I still like it a lot. It's one of my favorite anime's despite it's issues. Yeah there's a lot of other anime's that do the same or similar things in better ways but something about SAO specifically really draws me in. And I'm really enjoying the Alicization arc in the LN's and can't wait for it to get an anime adaptation
Yeah there is some stuff in SAO where i thinks its a bit cringe and stuff like that... but SAO has something one it which i just love and enjoy... I just like it how it is... i mean nobody is perfect and so is SAO not perfect.
i wouldnt say that, that someone dosen't like it i can understand but to say its the opposite of perfect is a bit harsh. I mean there are some Animes that really bad... and i mean REALLY bad... did you saw Taboo Tattoo? It was a complete Car Crash after the first 1-2 Episode and with each Episode it multiplied in getting worse and worse... its basically the Worst Anime i ever watched... and even at Taboo Tattoo i would say its the opposite of perfect...
I think the amazing thing about SAO is that so many people like it despite its flaws. Despite what the vocal haters would like us to think, there are tons of people that like it. Maybe it’s because I read the LNs after the first two or three episodes aired that I enjoyed it so much more. There’s a lot more emotion in it and not as much harem fanservice, so I didn’t mind the flaws as much. I also don’t mind incest stories, so while I didn’t enjoy fairy dance as much, I didn’t dislike it. I’m really looking forward to the Alicization anime adaptation, and I heard there would be an anime for the Progressive series.
yeah from what i heared there is the Spin of Series coming and a Season 3 coming. I'am really interested in it. Well, i probably like SAO more then some others because maybe my expectations or needs are as high as for some others. Thats like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, where people complained about the English Dub, yeah it had its flaws but i think the Dub was fitting and something different from 99% of the other Games. I Really enjoyed the Dub. Or when People say the One Piece Manga is better then the Anime.. i still like the Anime more... because it dont want to read the reactions and fights and all that stuff picture for picture... i want to see the reactions and fights in a fluid motion... i dont want to imagine how someone souns i cant do that... i want to hear it. I overall Enjoy it to watch Animes and i can forgive some flaws, i'am kinda easy to satisfy with stuff that others complain about, because i just want to enjoy what i'am doing. When i watched SAO season 1 the site that provided it had a comment section underneath the Video, and there was this one guy who watched all the Episode of Season 1 and complained under each Video what he didnt liked... well he liked the first 3 Episodes of SAO which he sayd but for all the others he just complained. I mean why do you watch 21 Episodes each like 20min of something if you just complain? He complained about the Romance, the Loli's, that Kirito wins the fights because he is the MC. He complained about kinda everything. Well i just enjoy SAO, it might be Simple and flawed and what every for many People. But for me it hits a spot which i really enjoy.
Have you seen uniquenameosaurus' video on why you should pirate anime? I would like to hear what you think about it, not to stir up shit, but because you both bring up interesting points and it would be interesting to see you counter each others
Cj Caldwell In one of his videos it showed his TH-cam screen and uniquenameosaurus's pirating video on the side had the red bar about half, so I assume he watched it.
Hey I had the basically the same experience watching SAO for the first time as you, and I subscribed thanks to your fixing Alfheim online video (and would enjoy more like it). Although I've seen a few of your videos before that was the first one from your channel clicked with me. I'm also happy to say that going back to your other videos has been quite enjoyable now that I understand your particular brand of humor. So thanks for everything so far and I'm looking forward to more content from your Girlfriend's Mother's Basement!
Ironically, this wouldn't exist if so many people weren't so angry about him making SAO videos. Congratulations, audience, you've specifically lead to the very thing you hate because you just wouldn't stop talking about SAO in telling Geoff to stop talking about SAO. Hope that makes you happy because you just both got what you wanted AND what you were against at the same time.
I love SAO! Not because the show but it gave team fourstar an amazing template to make one of the best Abridges I have ever seen! SO thank you SAO for at least being able to be made into something great!
5:50 HEY! I saw Game Maker's toolkit at the top there. ... You have good taste. Edit: Please do more game design, even if it's a mini-series. I love hearing about it.
He mntions it in a lot of his SAO vids that he used to love it, but now hates it. SAO is that gril you went out with for a while. She was great in the begining, funney, nice, you guys had similar intrests. But then she turned into something you absolutely despise. You've broken up with her, but everytime you see her you are hoping that maybe she's changed, maybe she's become a good person because you still remember how awesome she was. But you are continually disapointed and it makes you sadder and sadder. You wouldn't be in as much pain if you hatwd her from the beginning. The reason it hurts so much is because you used to love her. .... I think I got a little carried away there just typing what I feel.
First heard of Mother's Basement through the superbestfriendcast, and came over here and watched the SAO videos. I've never actually seen SAO, I just enjoyed the way MB tore them down in such an analytical way.
TheXenosaiyangamer I still have hope that Liz will realize that Kirito's an idiot and go for Klien. Talking about Klien reminds me of anouther disapointing thing about SAO. I wish that Recon had joined the group, but after his suicide play in the ALO arc we hear nothing about him. We know he's alive, but he might as well have died for all that we hear about him afterwards. I really liked him.
I also think that your videos, along with Digibro's, are very useful for people who want to write comics and shows, and your videos have very useful tips on what to do and not to do when making a form of media. I even took notes on Digibro's The Asterisk War Sucks videos cause I'm creating a anime-styled comic called Protector and his videos were useful. So thanks to you both!
I'm here because I watch all your videos. You are always very thoughtful, clear, and well articulated about your points and I really appreciate that. You and Gigguk are legitimately smart dudes who make quality content. That being said, I cringed when I saw you posted another SAO video... lol
Similarly, I suppose mine was Rosario + Vampire. At least... it was the animé that really got me into animé and actively searching for more. When I was really little, I'd seen the likes of Superbook and Speed Racer on home video, and eventually Astro Boy, Inuyasha, Bleach, Kekkaishi, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex before I finally came to Rosario + Vampire, and then began searching for animé specifically. I've just recently FINALLY gotten to Kill la Kill.
You know, I'm beginning to think Geoff doesn't like SAO.
Free Form Jazz yeah I'm getting that feeling too
I don't see it....(;
Free Form Jazz I knew I wasn't the only one who felt that
Free Form Jazz I'm not convinced.
Naah... I think he loves it, he talks about it all the time!!

Zen Kai Yi For another point of reference, check out SWE'S sao abridged series. Brilliant writing especially in later episodes.
Oh my- Thank you! I will definitely check those videos out?
Zen Kai Yi No problem. How was it?

Can't spell SAO without "essay".

I wouldn't call it Beating a dead Horse but more of an Autopsy of a Dead Horse, & that's why I love watching you dissect SAO to its very last detail, everything that went wrong & everything that works
it goes from "this is how the sausage is made" to "oh & also here's how the tools for making a sausage are made"
as for why is still popular making SAO videos, I would say is mostly you
" Autopsy of a Dead Horse" well said man, well said! :D
I usually lurk instead of commenting, but since you asked:
I keep coming back to your (and others') SAO videos because I'm always impressed with how many different ways SAO can serve as a good example of how not to make an anime on a variety of levels.
If you actually want to understand SAO, watch videos made by Gamerturk, FoxenAnime or Sword Artist. Then you'll understand what SAO actually is.
Shut it 12 yr old with no taste denying how bad your shitty anime
@@beastunleashed657 the hell? You just took youtubers that share the same opinion as you and seem to think sao is a timeless masterpiece. Long/short: SAO is the YMCA song of anime. Everyone knows it, and when it gets into your head, it won't go away.

Oh gawwwdddd....iut's in my heaaaad!!!

@@DarkLordFluffee you mean like Mother's Basement trying to make sure nobody likes SAO?
I have no interest in SAO specifically, I just enjoy the critical analysis.

Easy: Because the horse refuses to actually die.

Yeah, you covered all the reasons why keep clicking on these:
I loved SAO.
How about the third arc?

I know SAO is popular and there are significant and logical reasons why its popularity won't (and honestly, shouldn't) die, but I'm pretty sure the answer to why discussion of it won't die is actually just "Geoff Thew".
It's because it makes money.
That's "Geoff Thew - Professional Shitbag"
Sambou Jaiteh no it’s his landlord
What is Geoff Thew?
The SAO anime may be pretty bad. But has anyone read the SAO: Progressive manga, its a reboot of the Aincrad arc floor-by-floor with Asuna as the main character, and i think it's genuinely a lot better written. If SAO: Progressive had an anime i'd watch the shit out of it.
Asvaldr Nightingale there are rumors of a possibility they might make a anime of it which I hope. Cause Progressive is one of the best things I read. Kirito and Asuna are awesome and so much better than in the anime.
TheAuraKnight I heard that rumour too, I hope it's true
Mhh, gotta read that
No
Here from the future to tell you that's gonna be a thing.
I'm not excited for the new seasons of SAO; I'm excited for the new videos made on the new seasons of SAO.
The Suicidal Muffin if it gets adapted properly, the 3rd season shouldn't be bad
SAO: Abridged episode 12 came out 2 months ago. So there's that to be exited about.

If this becomes Geoff's most successful video because everyone wants to complain about SAO content....
You are such a SAO Tsundere.

It's bordering on yandare at this point.

That's some prime tsundere material right there.
Exactly
We can beat this horse further when that GGO spin off comes out
Ikcatcher just no Kirito...
Ikcatcher But what if it is good? How would you beat it harder if it is good?
We don't beat the reborn horse. We only beat the dead horse that revived *ALICIZATION ARC*

Hey guys, for a fun time go check out the SAO subreddit. People are absolutely triggered about MB making another video on SAO XD
What you lookin at They're triggered? Lmao did they not see this coming?
Someone made a post that was on the front page for a while talking about how Mother's Basement leeches off of this show and shit and can't get enough of it. Check it out. Should be under the controversial tab still unless they took down the post
Edit: Found the post again under the "hot" section on the second page.
It's really gog damn entertaining to hear you walk all over that show, so I don't mind.
I find it fascinating that a show can do so many things wrong and yet be so popular that 6 years after it's original airing people are *still* finding new flaws to point out in the series
Scarfum Munchum Kinda like Sonic 2.006, the game is so glitchy, even now they're still finding new glitches.
This World Is An Illusion It's like the abyss in Made in Abyss. The deeper you go the more stuff you find, even after so long
Not really. It's more like people are milking SAO for views. What Mother's Basement has said in the first video is the same as every other.
TheDeadlyBlueWolf In my opinion each one of his SAO videos says enough differently from the others to warrant it's existence
I don't think SAO is that terrible...
That's probably why I didn't have a Valentine's date :c
Just Some Guy without a Mustache me too
Just Some Guy without a Mustache can't believe nobody commented on you yet, so I will.
Ahem...
*Wow! You're everywhere!!*
No
The day SAO dies will be the day a Zepelli survives.

Should've watched the instructional video "So you think you're a Zepelli"

10:54 Intentional or not, I love how the footage here syncs up with your discussion when you use the word "shatter."
You're absolutely right. I only watch about half your videos, but I clicked on this one instantly as soon as I saw SAO in the title
Surprisingly , i subbed because of your Gravity falls video...does this make me weird?
You are the 1%
Woah, so did I!
I believe I subbed from that video too. Could be wrong though it’s been quite a long time
Yes, but this is a weird channel.
I loved Gravity Falls, i decided to watch it for this channel
So... Thanks!
God that TVTropes story is way too relatable. Can hardly watch anything these days because of that darned site. CUUUUUUURSEEEEEEES! -shakes fist-
Okay, because I have things to do, I'm going to attempt to dive in and grab a link real quick and get back out...

So SAO is (sigh)... the Dark Souls of bad anime.
That means dark souls is the SAO of games?
Don't you mean SAO is the Cuphead of bad animes?
Is Dark Souls Remastered the Dark Souls of Remastered Dark Souls games in the age of Dark Souls games?
Dark Souls of anime in general.
wait you said that wrong. It's the Dark Souls >2< of bad anime.
I just like hearing people hate on stuff
I'm here because even though I don't care about SAO because I want to learn about writing and storytelling
Zerpderp0 I know another youtuber that can help you with that.
Lumpy Space Princess you say that but you're not putting a name down... Don't get my hopes for nothing mate. Tell me whom you speak of
Zerpderp0 Sorry mate I was creating expense Jenna moreci is a great at talking about story structure and creating characters.
Lumpy Space Princess I'll look into it. Anymore?
Zerpderp0 Most of my story telling is self taught so I don't know many other TH-camrs that talk about the subject
SAO was the first action anine I really watched other than Naruto or DBZ (which I really didn't know were anime at the time.)) So it's very memorable to me, even though I can see its flaws I still enjoy it.
no one is saying you cant enjoy it, we're asking you dont call it objectivly good. which most people dont, some will till their death
SAO is the best anime ever, not like that Naruto or HunterxHunter trash
this sounds stupid but the first 14 episodes felt like 100. But I mean in a good way like I remember the good things about that part so well.
It’s one of my first anime, and I watched it while it was airing with my brother. It helped us bond in a really special way because it was the first time that we had something in common. So SAO its really social, with its flaws and everything.
Man, including Naruto in that sentence makes men feel so old...

My reaction to the title: because youtube updated its policies regarding views and channel monetization. SAO always does well. So it's wise to mention it during times of monetization problems.
SAO haters and SAO lovers, let's all unite and hate on *School Days* together
School days at least had the most appropriate ending ever.

SAO has its flaws, but is ultimately better than average. School Days is 10/10.
Also, stop criticizing things for the wrong reasons.
I may be an oddity, but I'm subscribed to your channel (and super eyepatch wolf) even though I don't really like anime. I find the interest, enthusiasm, and criticism for anime presented more interesting than actually watching anime.
Ive never seen SAO. I don’t even watch that much anime. I don’t know why I watch these.
Lol
A Sack Of Crickets If you've seen The Matrix, you've seen SAO.
Well, it's because it was a wide spread case of an Anime that had a great premise and hooking first episode but couldn't keep that locomotive chugging at full speed until all the coal and water ran out. This is nothing unique as there have been many Anime fans will claim "start out excellent only to drop the ball near the end or almost right out the gate," the polar opposite of shows that "get good later" after a supposedly "shitty start."
However, with how many Anime fans SAO attracted and created no less, the backlash was to be inevitably immense when ALO rolled around.
Also, calling it a plot hole is just wrong since a vague background is clearly not something that’s part of the plot, it’s an incongruity at worst.
in the lightnovel it doesnt mention numbers of people there just it was full
Player fulfill the function of many NPC's (forging, cooking, selling) so i don't see what NPC's would be for.
8:16 real talk I would love mother's basement: video-games edition. I think Geoff should look into doing that
i swear he already does that
To me SAO is a comedy at this point, i like people thrashing them cuz man is it fun. I really want sao to continue since i really do dislike it in a positive way, it's such a weird feeling i don't think i've ever felt this way about anything else tbh
BiggBossChanel yeah, i feel it too. kinda like "the room" movie feeling.
My friends just call it masochism as a joke, but that sums it up for me too. It's fascinating to watch a train wreck, even if it's horrible.
Not gonna lie the SAO videos are super entertaining. I mean they are why you got more and more popular on TH-cam lol (that and Game Theory)
" and we'll stop beating this dead even it stops beating out money" - Bo Burnahm
Cause its the perfect exemple of whar NOT to do?
well thats not true. Sao did some things right. If it didnt it would be forgettable and no one would be talking about it.
Kirito was just saving her as a recording item like the message device he got back in episode 3 from Sachi or like Pina's heart feather in episode 4.
i mean it gets way, WAY better as it goes on
Excuse past me, it's just this series had great potential and I liked it at first, until the goddamm incest, which is deal breaker for me. No matter if it got better after that, i simply can't enjoy it. But if you or others do, power to you.
It actually doesn't get better than that.
This is actually the first time, I heard someone talk about Mother's Rosario in an SAO video. Like, why is no one talking about this arc? xD
DaveMania01 because it's actually a pretty good arc but that would go against their hateboner agenda.
@@Tree93222 nope, this is the one just after that, about the ill girl.
In his what’s in an op vid he praised it
SAO is basically a animated Michael Bay movie...
But worse
@@Ticketman99 SOA is bad, but Matrix are bigger disappointment for me.
@@MarkyMatey What do you think of SAO Revolutions?
@@Ticketman99 Don't remind me, the matrix sequels still hurt.
"SAO is to Mother's Basement what FNAF is to MatPat"
-Does anybody know who originally said that, because I honestly don't know.
I subbed for your analysis in general, since I want to become a writer/creator myself and it's always good to hear why something works (or doesn't), even if it doesn't apply to your specific field.
when's my video on phineas and ferb
There is only one reason why I want more Sao. It's because there will be more Sao abridged in the future. Abridged is the real sao.
Your video about the Legend Of Heroes games brought me to your channel. you're just about the only one who has made a quality discussion video about those games. it's still one of my favorite video's from your content. Cheers! keep it up.
I never heard about SAO at all until people started complaining about how awful and pervasive it was so I just think it's funny
Valerie H Same.
its honestly not that bad.. people just like to shit on popular shows
Wait wait wait, _live-action SAO?_ How the frig is that supposed to work?
Timothy McLean the book is awful. The movie will be too. But it's a live action movie about a VR gaming future.
Jam Cliché Really? I mostly heard some pretty good things actually.
Can confirm, his SAO videos are the reason I subscribed.
Really boring looking
The only people capable of fighting should be women and ugly gritty men (and add only one or two of those) most of the women should also be really edgy and abusive to the Male MC as well as to say to the viewers "your Waifu would barf at the sight of you".
Of course while this is more a shonen thing making the long haired girls cut their hair short is really intellectual writing, so make sure to add that.
I'm here not because I really care about you talking about SAO, but because I enjoy hearing critical thinking about anime.
GZcoo SAO is the opposite of perfect, tho.
i wouldnt say that, that someone dosen't like it i can understand but to say its the opposite of perfect is a bit harsh.
Decent length video with intelgent points about media to listen to while painting my GW models >.
Yeah, I liked him up until he deified PewDiePie in that one video. Not saying I have anything against Pewd's, but that was a bit shitty.
Because, on the inside, we all just want to hear someone to do a huge swerve by saying they love SAO
AnvilPro100 Noice.
Now THAT would be a twist.
Annnnnnnnnnnnnd it's back.
SO thank you SAO for at least being able to be made into something great!
the transition into the sponsorships/ads is absolutely prizeless!! just perfect! lmao

HEY!
I saw Game Maker's toolkit at the top there.
... You have good taste.
Edit: Please do more game design, even if it's a mini-series. I love hearing about it.
When you wonder if Mothers Basement actually likes SAO because the talk about it so much
Perhaps it's "the room" of animes for him.
Does this mean kirito should be played by Tommy wiseau in the live action?
Plot twist
Krvys kirito: “So hows your sex life?”
*It’s not like I like SAO or anything...B-Baka!*
First heard of Mother's Basement through the superbestfriendcast, and came over here and watched the SAO videos. I've never actually seen SAO, I just enjoyed the way MB tore them down in such an analytical way.
Klien is a good character damn it. The only reason I somewhat like SAO! He would have been good as the main character
Klein is precious boy that was robbed of his screen time...
Guus van Voorst his name is Balls
TheXenosaiyangamer I still have hope that Liz will realize that Kirito's an idiot and go for Klien.
Talking about Klien reminds me of anouther disapointing thing about SAO. I wish that Recon had joined the group, but after his suicide play in the ALO arc we hear nothing about him. We know he's alive, but he might as well have died for all that we hear about him afterwards. I really liked him.
everything after episode 14 barley matters to me. Ugh it would've been so much better if they just had two/three seasons focus only on the alfiem arc.
TheXenosaiyangamer in my opinion, I hated Klein. I don't really know why he I just don't like his character
the same reason people kept reading fairy tail till the end
C Vox hey that’s burnout syndrome!
Because they're both objectively great, which they are?
I only found fairy tail funny and entertaining.... And I hate having stuff incomplete (only watched the anime)
Mr. Pokirby You are hilarious!
i know a guy who has legitimately watched from start to finish TWICE
I also think that your videos, along with Digibro's, are very useful for people who want to write comics and shows, and your videos have very useful tips on what to do and not to do when making a form of media. I even took notes on Digibro's The Asterisk War Sucks videos cause I'm creating a anime-styled comic called Protector and his videos were useful. So thanks to you both!
I love SAO, it was my first anime and it has special place in my hearth.
"Special place in my hearth" true, its burning well in my hearth as well for extra comfort in the evening... :-P
I feel sorry for you
Same here
My first anime is grave of fireflies. Its scars will haunted me for the rest of my life.
Because anime is trash....and so are we.
Anime was a mistake,... and so were we.
Nuking them twice was a bad idea. We should've dropped more
*Heavy Weeaboo Breathing*
Electric Boxers It probably would have just made it worse.
Yes
I'm here because I watch all your videos. You are always very thoughtful, clear, and well articulated about your points and I really appreciate that. You and Gigguk are legitimately smart dudes who make quality content. That being said, I cringed when I saw you posted another SAO video... lol
My gateway anime was Monster Musume. No joke.
i just watched Monster Musume today for the Second Time... i heared Season 2 is coming this Fall... man i cant wait for that. If that is true.
And that's why your parents don't talk to you any more.
Mine was Ghost in the Shell and NGE right after. It's hell, I can't find anything that compares
Um... uh... THIS IS A PEN!
