Fun fact about the scene of the Roger pirates on Laugh Tale: the word Roger uses to say “funny story” in Japanese is “waraibanashi” literally translates to “tale of laughter” or something to that effect. Additionally, those words are used in the last line of Binks’ Sake: “Hatenashi, atenashi, waraibanashi” which translates to something like “Our never ending, ever wandering, tale of laughter”. This observation has caused a lot of people to think that the lyrics of Binks’ Sake contains hidden information about the final island in it

Don't forget that this is the 2nd time Roger went around the Grand Line. First time he arrived to the Lodestar island and learned the existence of Poneglyphs and then while he was sick, went the 2nd time around. That 2nd trip is what this flashback shows.

Bro the Laugh tale scene with Memories playing is so iconic now.
I was liberally crying with joy and sadness at the same time man.
In 967, when Shanks and Buggy where arguing about the poles being cold, that scene was back in the Buggy arc in the SINGLE DIGIT episodes.
Roger's execution will always be iconic. Seeing all those future big names there was so epic. "Joyboy, I wish I was born in the same era as you". This is seriously the best flashback in One piece, it feels as if we're being rewarded for watching 900+ episodes 🔥
And the funny part is that Franky doesn't even realized that he already met Oden.
Roger is such a goat he found One Piece in just 3 episodes.

I lost it when Oden went up and talked to Franky, I really loved this flashback. Young Sharly was so cute too!
They're talking about Poseidon (Shirahoshi) being born and another ruler (probably Joyboy) from a distant sea. If you remember, the poneglyph that was found in fishman island tells about something like an apology of Joyboy to Poseidon. That means the two rulers have connection even before the prophecy.

For us, who have been watching one piece for 10+ years. That scene where he laughed was so powerful and it only was enhanced by the song "memories" from the first one piece ending playing in the background. A wave of nostalgia combined with something so epic we had been expecting for so long. There are no words to describe the feeling, my favorite episode of one piece ever.
For the most part, you know that Ruff started reading the manga. I saw on twitch his reaction to chapter 1044 (you know), it was incredible 🔥

Seeing Roger's journey feels like one of the most satisfying rewards for following this series. Great. Just great.
I'm doing a rewatch myself. I'm on episode 168. I'm loving Skypiea so much more than the first time. Maybe I'm older so I'm appreciating the nuances more than when I was a kid and just wanted the fighting.
I would recomend seeing "one pace". Its one piece, but edited by fans, so you only get the canon part of the manga. Rearrenge some episodes to be the same as the manga. And more importantly, the pacing, it feels way more natural, and fast, it makes the anime something else. A must try.
Fun fact: One of the songs in the OST that was introduced in the first One Piece film is called “Gold and Oden.”
The Film came out before the Anime as well.

As Ending 1 is playing they made it to Laugh Tale & while reading this in Ch.967 I actually laughed because Crocus called it Raftel back in Ch.105 / Ep.63
Not sure if anyone has told you this already, Ruff, but it's been stated before that Roger crossed the Grand Line twice. When you reach the end through normal means aka the Log Pose, you reach Lodestar Island, where you discover that there is another, hidden Island (Laugh Tale). The first time Roger crossed the Grand Line, it must have been a different route, then on his second voyage (this time with Oden), they went through the same path as Luffy.
Skypia was such a important arc with so many hint drops that the anime has not gotten to yet. Skypia is probably one of if not the most important arc in one piece.
If you go back through one piece it shows how certain characters linked luffy with roger like for example when roger hears the sea kings. If you go back to when luffy asked who it was in the ocean the sea kings said "wasn't there another person 20 years a go who heard us too"
Might be worth noting that during this final journey with Oden, the Roger pirates had already made it around the world and learned about the secret final island. That’s when Roger decided to travel the world again except this time following the clues on the Poneglyphs to find the final island. But he knew he was dying and had to hurry which is why Oden was so much help because he could actually read the Poneglyphs whereas Roger could only get a general idea of what they said. Also, they were able to travel so freely around the Grand Line because they had already explored most of it and knew their way around.

It is fantastic to see someone get and understand how big the talk of the Sea Kings is and the myth of the man known as JoyBoy. This will only become more crucial and impactful down the line.
Some people had a hard time understanding Oden's reaction to the news about Roger. Oden wasn't breaking down in tears because he was emotionally Upset about Roger's execution, But Oden was actually breaking down in tears of Joy for Roger for the praise & exploits Roger had created in his Top Speed life adventure before it had finally come to end from his disease and execution
The goal of getting to the end of grand line is only established after Roger says he left the One Piece there. Our impression of "moving forward" in the grand line only exists because of it. So before Roger's death, the pirates moved to all sides of the Grand Line and the world, not only in the direction of Laugh Tale

Haha its funny you mention about how someone in the community probably deciphered the poneglyphs, because The Hidden Island released a video a couple weeks ago attempting that very thing.
I am SOOOOO looking forward to Ruff catching up to the manga and FINALLY seeing him connect so so so so so so so so so so many of the dots he missed but couldn't look up and had to avoid reading the explanations for the fear of spoilers...

- Captain of the Flying Pirates / Ex-member of the Rock Pirates Shiki “the Golden Lion”who 27 years ago faced him in the Edd War (Episode 0)
- During Roger’s execution in the crowd we see Doflamingo (currently age 17), Buggy & Shanks (age 15), Mihawk (age 19), Crocodile (age 22), Moria (age 26), Dragon (age 31), & Smoker (age 12 which in Ep. 48 this scene was filler)
Only just reached this set of episodes and it low key made me emotional. Knowing rogers fate it was kinda nice to see that he really did live his life full of joy and laughter.
The moment where Roger finds and names the last island is the best moment in my opinion, the anime with the song and its meaning makes me laugh with Roger, and I realize that One Piece is one of the unforgettable adventures.
One Piece has changed all of us. In my case, the scene of Roger laughing at Laugh Tale taugh me how I should laugh for the rest of my life.
And I do it like that ever since.
And the day I get to know exactly why he laughed will be one of the most important ones of my life.
Roger saying they are going to the sky is the same panel as Luffy telling Sarquis.
Buggy's fruit is the Part-Part Fruit and he can split himself into different parts, what if he can be cut but only separates by using observation haki to avoid it.

13:26 I’m sure you’d have heard of it by now, but another theory with Usopp’s Lies becoming truths: the “island sickness disease” gag whenever they get close to an island, he gets a disease where he can’t go. Guess who somehow got sick with a disease and couldn’t go to the final island? 🤔

Also, if you watched past the flashback/are caught up… we all know the reference/foreshadowing to the final shot in that last episode in this set…
Only Buggy and Toki got sick with fever while they were sailing near the last island and they are the only people we know that have a devil fruit ability. Maybe devil fruit eaters got sick when they are close to the last island. Thus Luffy might get sick too so Chopper would need to treat him and achieving his goal while doing it.
I like to think its both LaughTale and Raftel. The idea that yes originally its Laugh, but thru people retelling the tale and dialects and whatnot people started calling it raftel cause it sounds similar. IRL that kinda thing happens so it understandable that it could happen in the world of one piece as well.
Plus the WG is activity working to obfuscate information about anything related to it. Think about how they changed Rodgers name to hide the D.

Shanks and Buggy arguing over North and South pole. Rayleigh bonks them on the head. This scene is shown in the first few chapters of the manga.1st appearance of Rayleigh.
- It’s to bad that Orochi was protected by his 2 other family members / “magic-users” that being:
- The quiet biwa player priest Semimaru (which means “cicada circle” & is a possible reference to a Japanese poet / musician, & he is voiced by Taro Yamaguchi) & he was the previous user of the Bari-Bari Fruit
- The old hag is Higurashi (which is a species of cicada & voiced by Hiroko Emori) she is dressed which references the Ushi no toki mairi (a cursing ritual), laughter style “Nikyokyo…”, her black teeth is reference to a beauty practice called ohaguro / Teeth Blacking because in the past Japan believed that pitch-black objects were beautiful, & she was the pervious user of the Clone-Clone Fruit
- There is a popular theory the man with blonde hair with the curl up eyebrows that she transforms into looks similar to Shiki “the Golden Lion” while the woman’s face is a young Miss Bakkin
- Interesting that both of them were the pervious owners of Devil Fruits to both Bon-chan & Bartolomeo both are loyal Straw Hat supporters, but since they died somehow both Devil Fruits ended up in the East Blue which is where both were born
20:10 the prophecy was about the “king of the sea kings”, aka Poseidon. You’ll notice Roger’s screw didn’t mention anything about Joyboy until they made it to Laugh Tale.
It feels like Ruff forgot the explanation in Zou... at the very least you need more than one "loop" around the grand line to get to the one piece... In the last island you find out about the poneglyphs and all that and how to get to the place where the one piece is... THEN you have to start over looking for the poneglyphs scattered around the grand line and get someone who can read it... The straw hats are the only ones who "broke that rule of the game" by being liked by crocus, who told them sabout Raftel... then happened to come across robin so they started collecting poneglyphs... then got to zou where they were told about the road poneglyphs... they started directly as if it were their second lap... But Roger did have to do multiple laps looking for the poneglyphs and his adventure lasted a long time to get there...
Buggy is on the ship because his potential, its bigger than shank's but Buggy is a lazy faq and don't train. Love him

As I remember, the Phoneglyps have been tried to be translated, but there are 2 limiting factors, 1, we need a compleate translation, not just the bullet points as Robin give us
and 2, it seems to be made in cypher, so without the key word, its extreamly improvable
Gold Rogers crew is wild. Luffy's crew is like a group of friends, but Rogers is like a whole sea faring community.
Rafthtale was reckoned into Laugh Tale during the Stampede movie.
Roger didn't visit skypia on his first trip around the grand line/ new world. He went basically on his deathbed one last time around the line (likely after visiting laughable) with a specific mission in mind. My guess is that whatever he learned at laughtale told him to go to skypia for some important story reason we don't know yet

Roger actually did go back to Gya, when he met Oden with whitebeard and asked to borrow him for a year, he did state that during that convo he made it to the last island on the log pose which is lode star island which means he once sailed across the entire grand line but he knew there was another island (secret boss for 100% completion 😅) based on what he gathered from that one ponigliph he had rubbings of.
Pretty sure Oda used Laugh Tale on purpose knowing it would sound more like Raftal to keep the real name secret until now. This was the first time it was actually spelled out in English by Oda and not fan subbers or something

Actualy, There is a literature called "The Tale of Bamboo Cutter" in Japan.
In the story, Princess who born from bamboo must go back the Moon.
I think, Joyboy is a "The Tale of Bamboo Cutter" 's main character.
The main character is called "Mikado(帝)". 帝 means "Emperor" in japanese. Mikado proposes marriage to the princess in the story.
But, Princess Kaguya must go back the Moon.
So, Somebody return to Laugh Tale from the Moon to marriage i think. It's Kaguya? Or anybody.
"The Tale of Bamboo Cutter" is the only Famous Japanese literature that Oda has yet to draw as a motif.

The reason why Toki and Buggy got sick is because of an ailment that effects Devil Fruit users. This is just a theory, but it lines up.
Might have lined up to why Shanks crew all didn't have DF users because he knows.

In anime very often cause of "incurable desease" is tuberculoses. Because even now you don'e realy have a cure. And it can kill eveb strong man, and you can live long enought even after you know about it.
So Crocus can be a doctor that can slow the effects, just like in our times.

Ruff already reffers to Oden as one of his favorite characters, and he hasn't even seen the whole flashback yet.
I know that you are caught up with the series now, so this is really late, but in regards to your theory on the hat being passed down from someone, don't forget that scene with the giant frozen straw hat in Mary Geoise. It definitely has more significance than we know, we just don't know what yet.

Oden’s flashback is full of similarities between Luffy and Roger… just in this video, when Roger says they’re gonna go to the sky, he says it just like Luffy did.

They showed Rayleigh meeting Roger in a flashback already. It was in Sabody right after the time skip when Luffy and the others were setting off to Fishman Island. Rayleigh watched them go and then remembered his first meeting with Roger.
