What kind of idiot freezes leftover pizza, then doesn't defrost it? The kind of idiot that subscribes to the local paper so he can throw it out daily in disdain. And the kind of idiot who writes a scene like that to show Cobra views the news media as bullshit, yet in the next scene he's watching TV news.
21:16 It's interesting to learn Cobra wasn't that big of a hit in the West. For us, kids growing up beyond the Iron Curtain, it was an integral part of "golden age of VHS" repertoire, together with all the Rambos, Commandos and Predators - and is fondly remembered to this day by people in their 40s.
Oh, absolutely. I can safely say it was one of the bigger hits here as well (ex-Yugoslavia), with Predator, Rambos, Terminators and Mad Max-es. One more that was apparently bigger here than the US was American Ninja series. Shockingly few people in the US watched or cherished those as much as we did.
The Rambo movies actually got official theatrical releases in China back in the day, and the Terminator and Robocop movies were shown plenty of times on TV too.
I always wondered how people on the other side of the iron curtain felt about Rocky 4. At the end when everyone in the Soviet arena is cheering Rocky we’d always laugh thinking in real life they’d be off to the gulag for that.
@@Nick_B_Bad I didn't see Rocky IV back in the 80s, I belive it only circulated as a bootleg (obviously), but I do remember seeing it in the 90s with my friends and yeah, we did laugh at that scene as well. And there's even no need to take gulags under account! First of all, the audience for such match would be carefully selected from top Party brass and their families. And even if it weren't... that's just not how Russians work. They have a very strong and somewhat idiosyncratic sense of national pride, so even though they might have hated their leaders in that moment in history, they still would root for Drago with all their hearts and feel personally humiliated by Rocky's victory.
Easily one of Stallone's best and most underrated films. Brain Thompson as The Night Slasher is a very ruthless and intimidating villain. Loved the music Angel of the City.
I get the feeling with Cobra there’s a whole other movie on the cutting room floor. It may not be a masterpiece but I always feel like I’m watching a long trailer for the real movie.
This movie was so hated back in the 80's. I'm glad it has a cult status nowadays, or at least something close to it. The real gem! Cobra (1986), Nighthawks (1981) and Lock Up (1989) are Stallone's most underrated films from the 80's.
Nighthawks is criminally underrated (Cliffhanger too tbf) when I watched it i was shocked it hasn’t been re-evaluated or at least became a big hit its just such a simple yet great idea. Also any movie that gets Rutger Hauer playing the villain like The Hitcher is fucking awesome by default.
Critics disliked the film. It did well at the box office. It was a staple on cable TV for years. Not a cult classic. It's just one of Sly's lesser films.
“You’re the disease, and I’m the cure” I don’t give a damn. I love this movie. This is how I remember Stallone. He looked, I think his best. The glasses. Awesome.
I was maybe seven years old when I saw Cobra (too young really) and it was pretty much the greatest thing I’d ever experienced. Used to go on the ferry across the channel on holiday every summer and winter and it had a cinema in it, staff couldn’t give a flip so they’d just let me in to watch anything, Porkies, Robocop, Predator, Running Man etc. I’d come back to school and basically explain each movie to my friends… those were the days.
I always greatly enjoy your detailed throwbacks. Most of your reviews are about films I watched as a kid and many of them get me to re-watch the ones I've since forgotten. Thanks for the great content!
Your production quality is amazing. Effects, editing, writing, all of it. Cobra is one of my favorites, I was 12 when it came out. It's nice to see a good thorough review on a personal favorite!
Great Video as always, Oliver! COBRA - EASILY one of the Greatest Action Movies of the 80s and my third favourite Sly film after FIRST BLOOD and ROCKY IV. This is absolute apex 80s, action awesomeness. Classic!
You did a Masterpiece with this Retrospective!! In Germany they named the Movie as "The City Cobra" and because of that they Re-Released the Schwarzenegger Movie "Raw Deal" and named it "The City Shark" 😂 OMG i love the 80s
Here in Sweden, the movie was banned for a long time. The distributor submitted shorter and shorter versions, but it kept getting banned. Finally, a version that was only 65 min long was approved for release in cinemas and on home video. It wasn't until the DVD came out years later that the uncut version became avalible.
THANK YOU! Grew up with this movie, being Mexican we were always late to new pop culture course and blessing since i was born in late 90s but grew up with 80s movies and music
I can't believe I missed this movie for so many years. It really captures the essence of '80's' cool and all the silliness therein. Also cutting a pizza with scissors is badass.
The part that I like the most is the supermaket which was really unnerving at the time. In my opinion, the film could have run for another 10 or 20 minutes. In any case, this is a much better film than what we get today, say the FFs.
Cobra somewhere between genuinely good and deeply deeply tasteless. As another viewer has said a director cut may add more to it, rather than the 90min version available at present. Cobra's biggest fault lies in its Dirty Harry lite presentation, with nothing but killing cobretti but killing, at least Harry Callaghan has a backstory of sorts(cribbed by lethal weapon ). A great review of a so so movie
Love the logo at the start Oliver! This is my favorite channel on TH-cam. I wish Hollywood would hire you to cut trailers. Could you do a video on the 1990 Night of the living Dead remake?
I was a little kid when this movie came out and I was SCARED!! The villain gang was so scary, specially after Cobra's info about the crimes happening in the beginning!!
Every time the Oliver Harper logo comes on at the beginning, it gives me the will to keep going. This is the only channel that truly and honestly makes me feel like a kid again
I freaking love this film! Thank you Oliver Harper for making this retrospective. I remember the vhs was on the shelf at Tesco and I’d read the back cover every week when I went shopping with my Mom. I was a massive Rocky fan at the time and he got Rocky III and IV on vhs and wanted this next. Lol. My Mom wouldn’t let me get it haha so had to wait to see it on TV.
i am once again humbly requesting a retrospective for Short Circuit and/or Short Circuit 2. the filmmaking process of creating & filming johnny 5 would be incredibly interesting, in addition to all the other story, acting, and production facts you research and deliver. how about an hour long retrospective featuring both films? lmao. specifically highlighting the amazing work the production team did to bring a convincing robot to life in the 80s.
I watched this on the weekend and give it a spin at least 4 times a year, i love it lol, first saw it with my grandfather on vhs back in the late 80's ... would love to see Sly go back in and directors cut the film
Re-teamed with the star/writer and filmmaker who gave us the Oscar nominated hit "Rambo: First Blood Part II" (1986) for Lionsgate/Studio Canal, now comes "Cobra" (1986) for Warner Bros/Sony Pictures Entertainment, the film's latter was an financial success.

Love this film! Id love to see the longer cut. I always thought the night slasher was inspired by the richard ramirez murders too. Especially as the news report that stallone watches while cleaning his gun describes exact scenarios and victim descriptions that ramirez actually committed.
I remember watching this movie as a kid on video at my friends home in the 80s. We loved it, because the horror/slasher elements were so realistic for us, although there was just a cut down version available in Germany back then. Since then I rewatched it from time to time, I still like this flick. Angel in the City is on my workout playlist, great Tepper Song.

This is the movie I’ve been waiting for you to review. It’s my favorite of Stallone’s. What a shame and wasted opportunity for this could’ve been a franchise. I’m still holding out hope for the original unedited version to be put the Blu-ray.
Great analysis! Managed to watch it yesterday just in time! Really wish there was a director’s cut; combining the slasher horror with cop film elements was pretty ahead of it’s time at that point.
Ironically Stallone's bleeding heart liberal superior in this film was played by Andy Robinson -One of the most psycho villians ever in the original Dirty Harry.
It's a fun film but definitely in Stallone's lower tier of output. Good review as always Oliver. Loving your snippet about the home computer games; it was indeed great on the ZX Spectrum. Such a funny game that was also very playable.
Great video as always! I saw this as a 13 year old in the theater (I wanted to see Top Gun but was outvoted) and thought it was pretty awesome (or "Awesom"). It's like Commando, perfect entertainment for a 13 year old boy in the mid-80s. Plus Brigitte Nielsen was foxy.
I’ve been craving Sylvester Levay’s musical scores to be released for years, same with Jan Hammer’s. Jan Hammer has had albums of the main themes he did from Miami Vice released but there is much more from that show and movies he’s done that haven’t been but that’s more than can be said for Levay’s works.
Yeah, this movie is 80's sleaze, the story and protagonist is ret@rded but I love it for nostalgia. The music, the aviator glasses. Pure vibes. 3:57 - this review was spot on. 19:00 - 😆 I had no idea they made a game for this flick. Thnx Ollie.
I'm 43 and was aloud to throw this on whenever I wanted on videotape recorded from HBO as a kid, lol.. what was my family thinking! ....ahhhh, the 80's
The intro itself is worth a subscribe and like button. Better than the actual Cobra trailer i guess. Also the bike chase scenes were shot during the day, because the shooting locations were mosquito infested during the night.
I love ❤️ this review so much , this motion picture was one of the greatest movie of my childhood like Over the top , Rambo 2 and Commamdo ! Cobra is legendary in my memories I was 11 years old
You can see where Hot Shots Part Deux got at least some of its inspiration right here. This film showed me the difference between Sly and Arnie. The former all so serious all the time and the latter more nuanced. I just could not see Stallone doing something like Commando - which I loved - because although Arnie plays it straight it is for laughs which is in the dialogue and brilliantly conveyed by Rae Dawn Chong.
The scene where Stallone is on the truck and the cult are willingly driving up and being gunned down is hilarious. The 50 caliber sound effective for a 9mm machine gun is a cherry on the top.
The Gosling book was not originally titled "Fair Game"; it was "A Running Duck". Just picture this movie (or the Baldwin/Crawford film) named "A Running Duck".
Great Review. This really is the "Dirty Harry" of the 1980s. I would love to have seen this in Beverly Hills Cop. Just imagine a Cobra version of Axel Foley alongside the comedy duo Taggart and Rosewood
Really wish we got the director's cut of this movie to see everything that was cut out of it.
Yeah, the Cobra Cut.
Screw the MPAA for toning down the violence.
Me too; I already love the movie but it’s always tempting to wonder What could’ve been with these things
You read my mind. Forget the action figure. Stallone needs to give us all the footage!
Would've been a great addition to the Scream Factory release.
That pizza cutting scene with the scissors was ICONIC 😄

Top 5 villain for me. Shame they did him dirty at the premiere.

Most Underrated Stallone Character & Most Under appreciated Stallone Movie,Loved Every Second of This Movie 🐍

Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

Back in the mid 80's I had Cobra and The Terminator on the same VHS tape - both films have many similarities and make a great double feature.
On The posters and home video artwork credits: “Warner Bros. Presents Cannon Film Group / Golan-Globus Production”
But there is no Cannon logo associated with the film and as raised in the video there is little connection Golan & Globus had with the film.
