It's been 35 years since I met a lady outside a gas station in Broken Arrow Oklahoma who changed the course of my life with a story about a King who wanted to do right by his people. Just in case she comes across this I was the little boy with his grandfather stocking the Ramirez Bros chips & dip.
I was hooked on the Valdemar series with Magic's Pawn. Loved all the books. Just finished Valdemar and made the connection between Restil and Windrider! Now, I can hear the song Vanyel sang!
Finally finished the Last Herald-Mage trilogy last week. Only 30 years late... either way, I'm incredibly happy to listen to this finally understanding everything
@J. K. I started with the Mage Wars trilogy, and loved it so much I wanted this one as well. My native language isn't English either, but it seems it wasn't popular enough to get translated
@@doredam8919 the Valdemar series is the most translated, sorry they didn't do your language ! I can't share the REST of Mercedes Lackey's books with friends who read only French. she participated in an awesome uchronia edited by baen books, and wrote or co-wrote a lot of urban fantasy, all of it worth reading...
I have 3 tall bookshelves of books. One is almost entirely mercedes lackey. Last herald mage was the first series i read of hers and is still my favorite to this day, along with the music from it. My mother did not think fantasy was good and after reading the series has expanded her reading genres.
Yeah. The only thing we have to go off of is the other Sun and Shadow songs and some context queues in the books - I don't think even Lackey has ever confirmed exactly. It's implied that these are songs from very, very early on in Valdemars history, possibly the first generation or two after Valdemar was founded and the Heralds founded. Hence why even the heralds aren't 100% sure of the origin of the songs anymore. Darshay is probably the son or grandson of Valdemar - heir to the throne, and he and his companion Windrider are captured. th-cam.com/video/MjgAoK6vfxI/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/TEq6rYgm0rc/w-d-xo.html The best hypothesis is that Sunsinger and Shadowdancer had some form of Talent (magic or otherwise) and curse, who stumbled across the imprisoned duo and who sacrificed their power to free the two. In the end they were either Chosen for their heroism, or they died and were reborn as Companions. Bardic artistic liberty and all that makes it a little hard to be sure. :D
I swear I read the full story somewhere but the short version is that they were cursed in various ways to only be awake during one part of the day. The literal day, and the night. They were also lifebonded. They pick up the power to break their curses but choose to use it to free Windrider and Darshay, the Heir of Valdemar and the Heir's Companion. They get Chosen for doing so.
@@John_Smith. That is what the two song tells us without any story... It is actually the case with most of her songs. They are filling the gaps in books. But we never see the same story in songs and in book I think...
It's been a year, how'd you like the books? I just got into them about a month ago, I've read the Herald-Mage and Arrows trilogy, so far, as well as Exile's Honour. I'm on Exile's Valor rn, and will hopefully start Take a Thief soon.
@@alesiasredruby1511 The song is based on a book series under the Valdemar Universe title. There's quite a lot, so it can be intimidating if you're interesting in picking one up, but they're mostly set in trilogies and some are very self contained, with different lead roles. Personally, the books staring Vanyel, the protagonist of this song, are my favourite of the lot.
I found the music way before I knew there were books the songs were based on. Trying to pick up the series but unsure where to start. From the beginning proper or from the songs I’m familiar with.
Conversely, I cherish it EXACTLY as sung and played: that guitar weeps, challenges, celebrates, and Heather Alexander's voice evokes chills enough without flourishes.

I had the privilege of meeting her online an, once, in person
She and her stories fill my heart.

Even without knowing the context provided by the book, this is a lovely tune passionately sung that tells a good story. Thank you for posting.
JamenofPern Actually the book doesn't provide any context for this one

Great. I have these books on order, all because of these songs.

Start with the Arrows trilogy. Those books were written first and are a good introduction.
This is pretty , but....I would like to hear these words set to a tune much more intense and with a more intricate guitar (lute) accompaniment.
