I first listened to a lot of songs related to the last herald-mage ... I hadn't read the books back then. Now that I have, it makes a lot more sense and has a much deeper meaning !
I believe the Hawk brother mage in question renamed himself Sun dancer or something similar. I believe Van learned about his magic powers and his sexuality from this Hawk brother mage and his Aunt. I think the artwork on the front cover certainly does the characters justice

The 'passing Herald' was Savil, Vanyel's aunt. The 'friend of hers' was Moondance K'treva (the "Hawkbrother" being referred to in the chorus), IIRC, though Moondance might be the one singing.
I do not understand concern about magic powers in this song. I had experienced the same and due to lack of my discipline I had ended thread of my father. Yet, if he had evoked such sheer hatred and fury in me, doesn't mean that he deserved to suffer and to die? Magic provides power to right the wrong in this world. Those good people does wrong to you and you are supposed to take it like a mindless sheep. Ever victim to machinations of others, never your own master, never a big and scary wolf which others lament over. I don't think that this song portrays properly its message as I would welcome that my line would be blessed by this boon through countless generations as it is mark of power and greatness for ones who can prove their own worth. In addition, this lure of darkness which song sings about might be dark entities offering cheap power, but I doubt it. Ones who control said powers usually emerge over such small gifts. I think these are subconscious desire which appears when you dwell too deeply and discover said powers. When you get a taste of magic, it will always linger. Whispering of what you could do with it. Craving at your mind to let it in. To let it grow. To fuel you and shift reality around you. It is destructive and harmful. Most end up mad, enslaved or worse for it. Ones who do not and are magicians are usually magicians like you see song about here.
In the Velgarth setting, untrained mages, especially very powerful ones, are apt to unintentionally lash out with their power when angered or upset. That's what happened here: the singer found his boyfriend with another guy, and in a moment of "blinding pain" killed him by magic; stricken by realization and remorse, he attempted suicide.
