      I might be in the minority but I prefer the 305 cubic inch engine otherwise known as the five liter there's absolutely little-to-no weight in the rear end of your El Camino unless you have something to counterbalance it in my personal opinion at 350 provides way too much horsepower and in adverse conditions do not careful apply to accelerator at the wrong time can easily fish till you and a turn or cause you to spin out on an incline. I get it 350 got horsepower go-fast yada yada yada but my personal opinion I get an immense amount of joy out of the 305 without having to worry as much about it spinning out or fishtailing when it sprinkles. Haggai install dual chrome glasspack exhaust system on mine and it's has a nice Rumble to it during the idol it makes a very pleasing sound when you accelerate you can be going 45mph and feel like you're doing 60mph in an El Camino. I don't know what it is my mom's Chevy Cruze isn't that much higher off the ground or about equal and I feel like we crawl in her car whenever I have to either drive or hitch a ride with her to go do something meanwhile now Camino you can be going the speed limit and you feel like your drag racer

      @BenDynamic you're not. My dad and I restored an 83 el camino, we bought it for 200 bucks for just the shell with a few interior parts, do to my dad's work we just could work on it for 2-1 days a week but after 6 months we got it functional, and for the engine my dad went with a 5.7 350 and is extremely powerful and way too heavy, if not careful you basically drift accidently when turning, and at a decent speed these cars are basically death traps so I wouldn't recomend it, the 305 is perfect for this car

    I remember my first gm car was a 1991 Buick century 2dr custom. I was about 17. The previous owner told me which key went where and I still managed to put the ignition key in the door and it broke off. Fast forward 6 years later gone through about 4cars and I have a 1977 el Camino I definitely didn’t make the same mistake again.

    I have an 87, the "knock" was likely dieseling... if I run 87 octane in the summer I get that on shutdown. Though I can say that I have driven others that have swapped in the 350..like that one and the 305 just seems to have more get up and go... especially when the secondaries open. Maybe that's just mine .

    Don’t be fooled sometimes both 350 and 305 valve covers can be swapped. I have a feeling that may have been the case-305 with 350 covers.

    This 1986 El Camino comes with the electronic chime tone for the seatbelt reminder. Did the 1986 El Camino ever use a scary buzzer on some models or just the chime tones?

    I have a 100% completely stock El camino besides the paint. It has a 1/1 paint Job but besides that it's even on the tires from like the 90s when my grandpa had them replaced. It's finally on its last breath and I gotta buy an engine, Trans and just replace all the wires. Shits sad bro

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go on eBay or to your local book store and search for a Haynes manual or a Chilton manual for your El Camino. I don't even think they publish those anymore so you'll probably have to find a used one but there's tons of them out there. They are general repair manuals to help you get the car running and keep it running. The El Caminos were not unique mechanically, I think they shared a platform with certain Chevelle's and Malibu's depending on the year, so some repair information for those cars might be applicable to you as well. My condolences on your loss Xavier, I lost my father last year and it's tough. Get that ElCo running well so you can drive it around and remember the good times. It would make your old man happy.

    • @bunk-bn9eo
      @bunk-bn9eo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      305s were damn near useless. Even the lowly 307 (underrated engine imo) was better.

      my 84 with a 305 starts like nothing, as soon as i turn the key it cranks and starts with no hesitation, ofc i have to give it a little gas but it starts, plus when i’m riding down the road i push 50 without even knowing it

  • @Garyscott7

    Why no power on that tired worn front end old puppy? In the late 70s and 80s California demanded small hog tuned engines. SMOG. Auto engineers applied band aid over band aid fixes to comply. Properly done that 350 4BBL Quadrajet would light up the rear tires. Rebuilt suspension, engine, paint, original mag wheels & upholstery & it would be a rolling cruiser classic for cheap.

    • @CarDietrich
      @CarDietrich  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well this one definitely felt like it could have used a serious tuneup. The previous owner said the Factory 305 had been swapped out for a 350, but it sure didn't feel like 5.7 liters of anything

    It’s a California car, it’s stuck with the dumb smog equipment and is probably making 120 horsepower. You can’t really get anything else out of it while still being able to keep it registered in California.
