Basenji. Science is validated with what many Basenji fanciers have long believed to be true, that is that the Basenji is one of the oldest living dog breeds on the planet? The Basenji to be the most beautiful and clever of all dog breeds. The proud bearing curly tail, wrinkled brown and sense of humor of the breed is the breed lovers ideal. Hey, what's going on guys? In this video, I will be giving you guys a brief review of the Basenji dog out of Africa. The Basenji breed was originally found in the congo. These dogs used both scent and sight to hunt and were originally used to drive small game into the nets of the hunters. It was also used to control the rodents in the village.
Basenjis life expectancy is 12 to 16 years. Males are 41 to 43 centimeters at the withers. Females 38 to 41 centimeters. They weigh around 10 to 12 kg. The acceptable colors for the breed are black, brindle, tri color, tan, black and white and red. These dogs are confident, cunning, athletic, playful, and entertaining. This is a great dog breed. The scents are not used much for hunting anymore, but they make amazing family dogs. Like I said earlier, the breed has a very long life span. They live up to about 13 years of age on average.
They can be fiercely protective of their families. They will need plenty of early socialization to be friendly and social with strangers. But because of that genetic predisposition to hunt, their instincts are likely to force them into committing undesirable acts with smaller animals. So if you intend on having a Basenji in your home with a cat, a bird, a rabbit, things like that, you're going to want to make sure that you take the proper precautions to train and socialize your Basenji. So this doesn't harm other animals in your care. The Basenjis temperament is described as affectionate, energetic, intelligent, curious, alert and playful. Again, these are amazing dogs.
If you're somebody who wants a small dog with real dog qualities. The Basenji is a breed that you should be looking at. So I highly recommend this breed. It's a great breed. This breed is extremely smart, extremely clever. But keep in mind it has hunting instincts. This is not a breed or not a dog that I would leave alone in the backyard. There's a lot of mischief that smart, cunning little dog can get into. So I would be mindful of that. You have to prepare yourself and your home if you decide to get a dog. But especially for the Basenji because of its abilities, talents and intelligence.
You want to make sure that you're prepared to provide this dog with a healthy, happy living environment. The Basenji really does suffer from some health issues. They include progressive retinal atrophy, fanconi syndrome and some other issues. So do your research on those elements. Find a quality breeder who's health testing his dogs, and is breeding for temperament.
