Look after yourself, your health is your wealth. Still have Jo and the baby on my mind. Best wishes from Ireland. No better team!
I think that all of the upright auger machines feed unevenly as they basically sweep with the bottom of the auger which is like an arm pushing the feed onto the conveyor. That only happens once every revolution. People seem to manage that by changing ground speed or doubling back on thin spaces.
I know it's only a demo but they really should have cleaned the rust off before delivering it to a farm that uses a rival product. Pretty poor sales technique.
@@davecoz4227 The rust gets cleaned off through use, the juices off the silage will keep it shined up. If you go at it with a wire wheel it will only start rusting again once you've finished.
Hi Tom if you want to get the last bit of food out of mixer shut the door down put mixer in high gear then put tractor in 1000 pto. Do it while at stand still Switch it all on rev it on up and down a bit. Feeds out better and more even. It works on the rs mixers
You and your family should be proud of all that you have done over the last few years. 👍😊👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I hope Joanna is home and feeling well again. Love to her and little Harvey ❤
Hey Tom, we went from a Keenan to a tub mixer almost identical to that one. We would never go back, never liked the Keenan really. We run it on a 100 hp tractor and it never struggles. We find it takes 5 or 6 mins to mix and doesn’t seem to matter which order you add the ingredients. Once your under a ton left to feed out we put it in high box and give it some revs and it usually empties out completely.
With the feed left on the augers, it needs some revs to get it off. We have a Strautmann verti mix 1251 without a gearbox (so we are stuck with one gear), so we really have to put the "pedal to the metal" to get it all off. I mean it gets mixed in the next day anyways and it isnt a problem in the winter. In the summertime however it starts to heat up really quick, especially with our 70% maize in the ration (we raise beef cattle). Imo it would be best to get it as empty as possible. Other than that we really love it and wouldnt do without anymore. btw: Really nice video as always! If you ever feel too stressed, take some time off of YT, health and family are more important!
Tub feeders always leave stuff on the auger, there is nothing to knock it off, they turn too slow for it to fall off, don't worry about it lad, we've had different types of tub feeders & they all done it 👍
Hi Tom, you probably should have closed the feeding door more, to have a more even spreading of the feed. And more revs to loose the feed on the mixers. We also have a trioliet works fantastic.
@@Psoydogleyit shouldn’t matter too much if the grass comes out of a pit because it would have been chopped by the harvester when it was being collected. I’ve always put the silage in last when I’m feeding with a Keenan and I’ve never had a problem with it
I have used a Keenan feeder a 20 cubic meter to feed about 15,000 lambs in feed lots. Over here it is a struggle to finish lambs on pasture as there is none, The Keenan is a good reliable machine, the hay chopper that supports the bales and cuts as goes in is invaluable for sheep, it also protects the mixer paddles is a biscuit of hay falls behind the paddles it will bend the paddle or stall the tractor. Providing you keep up with the maintenance very little trouble, we have snapped the feed out auger twice. The tyres are truck super singles, so we have tyres given to us form the truck driver that deliver hay, and barley. on the case 120 we can feed 4 tonnes, the new tractor a Case 150 ( same tractor as yours) we can manage 6 tonnes My only gripe is the discharge is on the left, a stretch for the spools valves when feeding. Hi tom i got a 25 cubic siloking with a 100 horsepower deutz nearly the same as your hürlimann ... to get the last bit of your feed out of the mixer you need to be in fast gear and 1000rpm. Then it will fall off had the same problem ... the feed need to be out of the mixer or it will start to heat up I wish everyone the best from germany😊
Great looking tub feeder, Tub mixers a lot better Tom.. just like a plough need to be polished. rotors will work better with been used. But put your silage in first & so on.. 🤙🤙👍👍
A twin tub will make a huge difference, we use a Sherborne Renyolds, the conveyor is on a hydraulic cradle which lift up to 4ft. They open up all sorts of ration mixing possibilities because the augers chop.
Tom I used a shelbourne Reynolds twin auger, 16 cm for 8 yrs feeding 270 8000 liter average herd. Before that it was Kenaan for my previous 20 yrs with cows and believe me, the tub feeder was way better. Once you've got used to them, they will do everything, chop bales of straw, silage easily, mix the max load you can get in- adding the bulk stuff first helps with the better mixing The silage stuck on the augers, is prob due to it being pretty new and needs the metal to get shinned up and possibly revving the pto more, on high to spin it off. Yeah it never emptys 100% I found, a few kgs left, but as a Kenaan gets older it never does. You won't regret buying one. Pity your current wagon is so new and financed still.
Had to have a second look, the rotors are actually rusty so I suspect like you say after a bit of use these will become shiny like a plough blade and the food will drop off.
Tom, i was thinking about the soggy lands and the challenges you have with it. Why not jump over the pond and visit a Dutch farm. I'm sure they can help you with ideas on improving the problem.
Absolutely love your opinions Andrew you speak things how they are and the welfare of your herd is your no.1 priority and with all the tech side things that Toms bringing into the farm just help improve that wisdom. Such a great partnership and lovely to see xx
To compensate for the big clump dropping off the auger and even out the discharge onto the conveyor, is it possible to use the tub gate as a limiter by closing it part way?
A agree with your dad, wise to trial when your current equipment is quite new, you'll be able to see the real difference. Looking at the way the cows went into the shed, its going to be really interesting to see what the milk yield is. I suppose the question you have to ask yourself is, that if the tub feeder increases the yield at what point in litres produced, is there a value to change over. As the Keenan is nearly brand new, you would get a better price for it now, instead of waiting 5 years if your going to replace it. You definitely need to take a break, even if its a couple of long weekends. There are enough places in your neck of the woods you can go to to just switch off, yes that does meen not using your mobile phone. 🤣👍
Where I work we run an rs agri tub feeder with a cow connect system. With a tub feeder you have to feed with the augers. You can’t always go a constant speed and often have to slow down/ speed up. When they are ‘empty’ you’ve got to put them at full chat in order to get the grub off. If you’ve got a really full box, then you might notice that they feed out better in on one side than the other (as in which way the belt is going). This is because the auger pushes feed out the door in the direction the auger spins, so the conveyor has to fight against that motion when going the opposite way. They do mix very well and you can put bales in them, unlike a Keenan. You can also properly brim tub feeder to the point it overflows and it should still mix well. Unlike Keenan’s
Hey Tom Keep in mind with the collars that if the feed is less tasty the eating time goes up because the cows are more searching in the food than actually eating 😉
very nice machine, but I'm sure you can get a hyraulic belt hatch, which you can open to different degrees and heights. which allows you to feed in the high food troughs🤩

have you ever thought about portable calf hutches for the new born calves until the weaning stage a lot of dairy farms around here in the scottish borders This would possibly save on new calf house costs keeping nursery calves in a more disease free enviorment easy to maintain pressure wash each hutch after calves move into bigger groups . A lot of dairy farms here swear by them some have even put in automatic milk feeders .

Another great video Tom and good to see the cows are getting happier and happier, it must be good to see all of the hard work and investment paying off, make sure you keep a good work life balance, so you don’t miss the little man growing up, as you will be sitting there when he is 23 wondering how he grew up so fast, as I am now
Best bit of a keenan is the consistency of mix but when your trying to chop straw or load wagon silage you have to load it strategically so you don’t choke it or break the chain
Now that you’ve done the parlor, it seamed big enough for the farm at the time but I can see the growth.. I’m thinking you should have doubled the size of it and made it grow like the farm is.
These twin auger tub feeders mix really well. And its true that you can run them with a small tractor if you've got a light tractor it'll be tricky sometimes with steering it. 60hp is enough for a tub feeder.
My tub is 20 years old, 4 loads a day in the Winter. Never had a Keenan so can’t compare, but did mention not fair to do a demo against the Keenan in 5 years time😅
That’s the make and design that lots of other tub feeder manufacturers like to imitate. I use paddle and tub feeder. Tub is the better but they still wear out the screw but it’s taken us 9 years feeding 500 beef cattle to wear the screw past its best.
Try and get a demo of a Shelbourne & Strautmann to compare also, the Shelbourne has a conveyor system that can move up/down left and right which would be handy for some of your troughs.
If you have the triolet if the small bits of rubber that stop muck going down by the roller come off the belt will keep moving and start moving and ruining the belt and wont run straight so remeber if the rubbers come off then put then immediately back on or the main belt will start breaking and rubbing against the side.
Fantastic video. I love seeing you try new things out on the farm, love hearing you all having conversations and questions about the equipment, what your expectations/needs are for the equipment, seeing it work. Of course I absolutely love hearing your dad’s input and your one to one conversations and both your points of view, what a wonderful team you two are. Loved the drone footage. Thank you for putting out such wonderful videos that are always interesting, educational and informative. Look after yourself Tom. Hello’s to Joanna, Harvey, your family and your wonderful supportive team. ❤❤
We have a dairy farm here in Queensland Australia and we had a Kuhn euromix horizontal auger mixer and decided to try an ABBEY VF2000 vertical auger mixer and we like it a lot I do all the feeding and feedlot work so I’m using 99% of the time and love it we use round bale silage instead of pit silage or chopped silage and we put hay and straw round bales in it and it does a good job yes it does leave a hundred or more kilos of feed on the augers but it doesn’t bother us really
Used to run hispec mixmax feeders for 25 plus years then about three years ago tried a BVL feeder and never looked back. Run two of them now 36 cube and very low maintenance. Milk yields went up and less waste to clean away every morning. Would definitely recommend a BVL feeder
i think you will love the Tub feeder , the mix is much better as you can see , i understand you liking your Keenan but now is the time to trade in wile it is in good and tidy , lets see what happens with the milk and the cows are not separating out the food . If you need to take a break DO IT , i learned the hard way and made my self ill , so PLEASE PLEASE think about it
In the Netherlands you don’t see any horizontal mixers like the Keenan, we almost all use vertical mixers like the trioliet. Because the vertical mixes better so you get a better tmr ration, provided that the mixer has been shined up. Keenan’s are built tough but since trioliet is a Dutch company it’s also built like a tank
You’ll definitely see a difference in the unload, thousand box will throw the grass off the augers but definitely a disadvantage. It’s like stacking square bales than round. Filling out the corners is where you gain the capacity rather than the Keenan
Used a Sherborne tub mixer and it was brilliant. We did have to put the pto in 1000 to get the feed off the augers. Is much worse when new, once it shines up its much better!
My 1st tmr mixer was a Trioliet single auger. Currently have a Trioliet twin auger 2-1600. Run with a JD 6400. Absolutely love it. Very heavy duty. Run alot of hay and baleage.
Fed with both types of machines. Loved the steady output of material that the Keenan provides with the auger. As said in the vid, it doesnt like to be overfilled. Incredibly robust machine though. Top feeder with two rotors gives a better mixture imo. As long as the knives are sharp enough ofc. 😅 A bit more fiddly with the unloading, but when you get it right, its not much of a problem. All in all, i would prob. go for the top feeder if it suited the operation in general.
we have a faresin feed wagon in Finland which has also been good. almost 10,000 hours run. it has been used a lot, so we have to think about changing the feed cart or changing the vertical screws. Triolet is certainly a good alternative. thank you for the video
Always preferred the tub for round bales here in Ireland just maybe life so much no breaking them up to stop breaking shear pins and other bits the feeding out was always more patchy with the tub but after a while you get the hang of it
Great video Tom as you call them tub feeders mix extremely well and very consistent as well and with having the blades in it it will chop the fodder beets up 👏👏👍👍
Another class vlog from Tom and Co. I have an ever-growing Britains and Siku farm 1'32 toys collection and have just bought Keenan and Streatmann cattle feeders and both models are mint. It is important that you all give an unbiased review of everything that you have on demonstration as it gives not only you and your dad an idea of what is good and better what is new but also you can get a good comparison on what you use on the farm how are Jo and the little fella Harvey doing well I hope. Take care and be safe all of you and I will reply soon. Matt Hastings East Sussex.
Can’t hardly beat a horizontal mixer if you don’t over load it. Vertical screw mixers will size your long forages the longer you mix, and slightly more forgiving if you overload them I think. Both are good and have their shining good qualities and each has a draw back. Learn to use them and they’ll both treat you well. Honestly I would pick based on what you want to see in the trough. We switched to a vertical screw to prevent the sorting issue we had.
Hi Tom and Ginger A salesman told my father that a keenan can't mix, but the cows don't know that 😂(we had a keenan mixer for 14 years 😊) in Denmark vertical mixer is the most normal mixer but I have always been taught that concentrate goes in first.

You have to give it more power to empty it completely and set the PTO shaft from 540 to 1000. Then the last residue will fly out without any problems

You need to run that mixer at the RPM its made to run otherwise youll get uneven mixing and feeding out the discharge.
i think you will love the Tub feeder , the mix is much better as you can see , i understand you liking your Keenan but now is the time to trade in wile it is in good and tidy , lets see what happens with the milk and the cows are not separating out the food .
I'm thinking of watching your videos while playing a drinking game. Everytime Tom says "That's what she says" you have to drink a shot. 😂🤯
Definitely like how you’re always willing to try something new. It will be interesting to see if this improves yield.
All mixers in our area or vertical mixers…… put a round bale in and watch what it does… you will be amazed!!!
My 1st tmr mixer was a Trioliet single auger. Currently have a Trioliet twin auger 2-1600. Run with a JD 6400. Absolutely love it. Very heavy duty. Run alot of hay and baleage.
I always put in forage 1st. Grains and mineral always last. Also use your own instinct on mixing time.
Hi Tom and Ginger
A salesman told my father that a keenan can't mix, but the cows don't know that 😂(we had a keenan mixer for 14 years 😊) in Denmark vertical mixer is the most normal mixer but I have always been taught that concentrate goes in first.
