One of my many "Gadget" hobbies is Astronomy so I wanted to give you a brief review of my Celestron Nexstar 127 SLT telescope and how I use it to image the night sky.

Nice one Gary that's some equipment.very nice indeed . Some very nice images . Myself and the wife back onto a farmer's field and love looking at the stars, we had no look last night with the shooting stars but no problem , very very interesting video and nice editing , keep safe mate .

Hi Colin. thanks for watching and commenting. I have actually sold my 127 now and Im using a starquest 102 plus a skywatcher 200p. The 127 is the way to go for lunar and planetry work everyday.
@@garrygadget hey Gary, cheers for replying, this is just a practice scope to see if I enjoy or not, I have used 2 times in 2 months with our rubbish uk weather, your set up on yours looked good though, was kind of wanting to replicate a little, am I able to see andromeda with this or not, all I see is hundreds of stars
@Colin3brown top be honest I've never seen the focuser I had as it was from ebay years ago. Andromeda is basically too big lol, id say even with a 40mm eyepiece. It's more of a wide field object, like a skywatcher 80mm refractor. The 127 is mainly brilliant at lunar and planetary work, but hey you never get tired of watching Jupiter.

This is a great video and I learned so much just from your walk through. I am brand new to astrophotography and just got a Celestron Nexstar 127. It all seems overwhelming at the moment and it was good just to see you go through your entire setup. It helps me understand the overall basics and it doesn't seem so overwhelming. I did have two questions: 1. Did you use the handset and Sky align before you set up the cameras and computer, or did you just use the auto-align feature on the computer software? 2. I saw you drinking a Budweiser and was wondering if it is consider an expensive Import in your country because it's an American beer? (it's actually an average beer and we have a ton of excellent microbreweries that make much better brew)
Hi, thanks so much for watching and such a great comment. I use the app on my phone usually to align the telescope - but it sometimes takes a few times to get it to behave lol. I do like a Bud and no its very cheap to buy - its a good clean taste and not a heavy drink but I do like drinking diferent Ales as well - especially one called Plum Porter in the winter. One day I will visit the states, and defo taste a few beers!!!!!!

Thanks Paul, I've actually sold my telescope now but will get back into it at some point. The 127 was OK for bright DSO stuff but I used it mainly for lunar, solar and planetary. Clear skies my friend.
Agree with all the other comments, an excellent video! My question relates to the ASI224MC. Does this mount directly replacing a standard eyepiece? Would also love any additional info on the remote focusser. The 127 is well documented for shake when manual focussing and its the next thing on my list to amend. I can find a manual version from another manufacturer that i can make fit but i really want something remote. Gary
Hi sorry for the late reply, the 224 I put in place once my object is in the centre of the eyepiece. Use a bag of sand hanging from the tripod to help stability. The remote focuser I got years ago off ebay, its been great and was very cheap but unfortunately I've not seen one for sale in years.
Hi Gary, thanks for the video. I've recently purchased the Nexstar 127 slt scope and am loving it, apart from the vibration when I touch the focuser , which makes it very hard to focus! I've been trying to find a suitable motorised focuser but am struggling, would you be able to confirm that the piece of kit you have attached to your telescope is? Thanks Chris

Celestron sell one but it's over 200 quid but if you Google it there are plans online to make them. Mine isn't professional one but does the trick. I'll have to do another video on it with more details.
Hello from the states I'm in Ohio Great Information Looking To Get Into Astrophotography not sure if the Mak -Cass is best for that or what is your opinion on reflectors or refractors I'm kind of lost although your pictures look amazing
Can I swap my cloudy skies for your forecast tomorrow - just checked as it says its sunshine and 31 degree's!!!!!!!!!!. You are totaly correct as the Mak- Cass due to its greater focal length makes it a superb device for lunar and planetry work but to get better deep sky objects they need to be a few inches bigger in aperature but these can cost big bucks. Before this 127 I owned a skywatcher 150p and it is a real good jack of all trades and the motordrive (albeit not a goto drive) is cheap and easy to fit. Something like a 150p or a 200p if you stretch to it with a barlow lense will give you good planetry stuff but as standard be very good at nebula and galaxy work. Also have a look at the new starquest series by skywatcher as the motordrive for those is absurdly easy to fit and very cheap which will give you your tracking and they do a 130p or a 102mm refractor in their range? Thanks for the video...very helpful as I can't seem to get any picture on my computer screen when using my camera (I have the Celestron NexImage10 camera). I will try some of your tips. What is the name of the software you use for capturing your images? Is it called Sharp Cap? I can't seem to find it on the web.
Hi Jim, Yes mate its called sharpcap and you have to play around with the shutter speed etc to get the image on your pc. Its not like using a "normal" camera as in you will see an image on the screen of the camera. Also as you stack images an image that looks dim will come out much brighter? Hi Garry, thank you for such an informative 'walk-through' of your telescope, it was very helpful indeed. I admit I bought mine as a total novice back in 2014 (walked in the shop for something else and came out with the 127slt) and it has basically lived in the box ever since, due to my complete lack of knowledge, the wobbly stand and no guidance whatsoever. I think the only thing I have ever looked at is the moon lol. May I ask a few questions please? 1. I can only seem to find one eye piece, 25mm which is on the telescope but do you have any advice or videos on buying/using different eye pieces please? 2. do you need to update the data info help in the telescope, if so, how do you do that please? 3. you have stated in a previous comment that the lens is sealed in the 127slt, so is it safe to wipe the outer glass/lens and the eye piece with a soft cloth, I have heard you should never touch them as you can ruin the coating 4. have you ever had trouble aligning the telescope from inside the house through double glazing? I have found this nearly impossible to do. Do you ever use it indoors? Thank you for your time and I have just subscribed to your channel, happy star gazing :-)
Hi Rebecca Thanks for watching and subscribing but also for such a marvelous comment. To be honest don't spend a fortune on a lense but get a celestron 10mm plossl and be amazed at your view of the moon. Use the 25mm for wide field objects and the moon or planets.Get them central then swap to the 10mm, a 2 times barlow would be a good bet as well. Don't worry about firmware etc as stars don't change so as standard is fine. Unfortunately never view through any window, it destroys the image and even an open window is no good due to air currents so I'm afraid getting cold is the only choice. Try hanging a bag with pebbles or sand from the central struts to stabilise your tripod more? If you need any help just ask, oh and enjoy the skies.

On the scope I use standard spectacle cloths or wipes as its a sealed scope compared to a Newtonian and on my ccd cam I use a fine air blower and antistatic brush.
The 130 is a far faster scope as in I think its an f5 compared to mine which is an f12 so you'd probably get better views of deep sky objects and with a 2 or at a push 3 times Barlow lense you get similar planetary views? The benefit of a mak is it won't go out of focus ( unless you drop it lol) and you don't have a cool down time so its quicker to get started? Either are excellent though. Hi Garry I have a celestron nexstar 130slt I’m new in this I just bought a NexYz smartphone adapter and the ZWO Asi120mc. Can you please help me with recommendation for take good videos or pictures, what eyepieces need to make a good picture and how to use the Asi120mc
@@danielricardo3916 Hi daniel, Ive not used a phone holder myself but I imagine it would be best to experiment with your phone settings as usually manual is best and alter your iso etc if possible. Remember it sky align your scope and then test it with a 25mm eyepiece then a 10mm ensuring your objest of coice is central. The moon is always a nice easy target to start with, especially as we get its 1st phase soon and the craters and peaks will be really pronounced. You need sharp cap to use your ZWO (the 120 is a cracking bit of kit). Connet your ZWO to yourpc/laptop via its usb cable and then alter the settings on the right as to the speed of the camera and this alters the image, on the moon dont go too btight as you can enhance it post imaging. At the top of the screen click on capure and choose to keep capturing images until you click stop and you can see the amount of frames you have and number of dropped frames and stick with say 300 to 500 frames to start with. Use Autostakkert (its what I use and to be honest watch a couple of tutorial vids on here first). This will stack your images, you just open your target folder that holds your captures and then the software will stack them. Finish off by opening the image with your chosen/usual imaging software and enhance until you are happy. Its a bit long winded and sticjk at it and honestly you will be blown away at what you can achieve. Hi Garry. For those images you took is it just your camera connected to the telescope? No eyepiece at all? If you don’t have an eyepiece how are you able to achieve any magnification?
Yep just the cam and no lense, due to its massive folded focal length it already magnifies a hell of a lot. A barlow lense would reduce the light available.
I just got this scope and Id like to know does it matter where you put the scope on the computerized mount? I have seen some with it all the way up the mounting bracket and some in the middle and some at the end. is this a personal choose on where to mount it? and I have that mod that plugs to the aux to do the wifi star align and work off the app and yes I agree it take a few tries to get it to work, so do you think the star sense mod is worth to get and is it much easier to use?
Hi thanks for watching and commenting , yes you can get filters that help but ive never bothered as you can always use a filter in software when imaging? To be honest light pollution is an enemy to most of us, but for the moon or planets which are bright it's not an issue. This isn't great at deep sky objects anyway but the orion nebula etc should be fine, just choose targets and give it a go.
in visual, can you see details in clusters, galaxies. Although is not a telescope for astrophotografy of dark objects, can you at least watch them from relalive poluted areas
Just look for skyportal on the app store. You can't increase the power as in its light gathering as this is the diameter of the front part. You can increase magnification via a barlow tube or smaller lense ie a 6mm but increases reduce the amount of light. Don't worry about magnification as after say 150 times the image gets too poor to use.
I actually have so many questions about this scope, I’ve had it for a few years and have taken it out quiet a few times, I also have the standard eye piece kit that celestron offers. I have some slight trouble making out finer details of the plants and still can’t see any nebulas. The nebulas, if I correctly located them, look like a very blurry and faint set of dots with dim light, Is that even possible with this scope to see things like that?
It's not the best for eye visible DSO's but if you use a camera and stack the images its very good. I use a wide field refractor for naked eye viewing but a newtonian would be the best of all worlds. @@garrygadget I’m not advanced or intermediate by any means, it’s funny because I bought this as my first telescope without any knowledge what so ever about how to use one or anything astronomy, I just wanted to see they sky and did some reading online about good beginner telescopes of quality, I’m currently in an astronomy course but it does not teach telescopes. It’s more of life in the universe but I would not mind taking one up about telescopes to learn more about it. I have the whole set up to get started though, the celestron lens kit, the adapter and the unit itself, and so far I have been able to see basic things but I’m wondering how much detail should I be able to make out with it.
Hello. I noticed you had the wifi dongle. I've seen mixed reviews on Amazon on this. Can you clarify why I should look into getting this? Does it simplify the alignment where I don't need to find 3 bright objects? My telescope arrives later today. Curious to get started. Thanks.
Hi Mitch , hope you have fun with your scope mate. The dongle just means you can still align using the app on your phone plus this way it automatically puts in your date/time and location. It also allows you to set the scope to a target of your choice using the software. It can still be hit and miss just like the handset - you align it up fine then frustratingly states - alignment not done - AArrgghhh. Personal choice mate, I like it and Im gald I got it but if it does your head in please don't blame me lol? I think I might add the star align device at some point and then just use the dongle to get to my object of choice but again this is quite a big outlay. Let me know what you do and how it works.

Hi, yes the amount of light any telescope receives is more than a human eye will get so you can see fainter objects. In a city with light pollution you can see far more stars and in a dark skies area its awesome. Enjoy your scope, clear skies my friend.

Wow Garry, must congratulate you mate on a fantastic and informative upload, youve got my astronomy juices flowing big time, i have a more budget self tracking Celestron Reflector, only operable from the handheld pad though etc. I was going to venture into amateur photography but now i think i need to combine Photography/Astronomy photography, something ive always wanted to try, might get shot of my current scope and take a serious look at the 127 SLT or similar, many thanks again mate, stay safe :) p.s. have you caught the Starlink satellites yet?
Hi Rik, you will probably find that your reflector with a DSLR or mirrorless and a barlow lense will give you better images of deep sky objects (orion nebula etc) than my setup would as its light gathering power will be greater? The starlink - I managed to see one - it hasn't been as great as I expected but I hope we dont get a heavens full of them as it will be a right pain for astronomy lol. We are being carefull - hows things for you mate?

I caught a load of the Starlink satellites a few nights ago, find them a bit odd, if they are for Satellite broadband why arent they in geostationary orbit? and yeah i agree, more space junk ffs lol. @@rikster738 any dslr will do and just do burst of say 20 second exposures and then stack the images. I think they went for the cheaper option with starlink to save the cost of a geo stationary orbit - just flood the heavens with small cheap sats for the same effect? Or they could be space gun platforms and Elon will take over the world?

Any scope or camera that isn't too heavy would work fine if aligned. The p1000 has a great zoom but it's sensor is too small for anything but lunar work I'd imagine?
I'm so glad this helped, too be honest always buy the widest aperture you can afford as light gathering power is king in astronomy. This 127 is a good do all scope but not as good at deep sky objects whereas a skywatcher 200p would give great nebula and galaxy views.

sorry I haven't replied sooner, so not sure if you got sorted? They dont last long, your far better off buying a 12v adapter and running it from a power station to be honest. You only get a few hours on battery, even less if its cold.
How about second hand? Or get a newtonian reflector with a motor drive as at least it will compensate for the earths rotation? Good luck and thanks for watching

Sir i have celestron 130eq manual telescope (f5 ,650mm ,nw). Which deep sky objects (except orion nebula) can i see from my telescope without any exposure image. 😔 your videos make me grateful and give inspiration. Love you sir, makes a lot of videos regarding astronomy . ❤️🙏
Hi, thank you for such a lovely comment and I honestly don't think I deserve such praise - but yes I did enjoy making the video and the next time I get a spare and clear night I will do another. The main thing that will affect your chances of seeing deep sky objects (DSO's) will be light pollution as a dark sky area will really help. Also use an eyepiece with a big filed of view, as magnification isn't key for these obersvations. The Andromeda Galaxy should be a good view as well as the M13 cluster and dumbell nebula. Make sure in a dark area you give your eyes a good 20 minutes to adjust before you start viewing. With patience its amazing what you can witness with your telescope - just keep trying and write a list of objectives and then tick them off as each one is your own victory. I'm almost buying this one, but I'm still afraid if a reflector would be better. Could you give me your opinion?
Honestly something like a skywatcher 150p would be my 1st choise as a starter scope as it would give you years of service. You can attached a motor drive quite easily to compensate for the earth's rotation and it comes with the required tubes to add a dslr for astrophotography (well mine did). A goto scope saves you time but teaches nothing about astronomy. Let me know what you end up doing and thanks for watching.
Hi I have the same telescope i was wondering how do you take multiple images when the target is moving I always get star trails when trying for deep space
Hi, you have to make the alignment is spot on and try a faster shutter speed then stack the images? All scopes will suffer this unless top quality and expensive lol. Experiment on different shutter speeds and the one that's sharpest use that.

If price was not an issue, under $1000, that is, what is the best scope I can buy for my father who is not tech savy and does not have wifi to see the deepest & most? thanks amigo
Mmm big question lol, honestly don't spend a fortune incase he doesn't get into the hobby plus there is a big shortage of scopes due to national lockdowns? I think the skywatcher 150p is a great starter scope. Some recommend a dobsonian mount but personally I don't like them. The 200p is a better scope but heavier to move. A 150p on a eq5 mount is great as a good mount is paramount as you can upgrade the scope at a later date. Have a look what's around 2nd hand? Newtonian scopes may need aligning but watch a few videos on it as its not hard. A scope like I say is all manual, easy to use and gives great results.
Hi Moises, even though I love this 127 slt I have owned many scopes and this suits my needs for planetry viewing needs as it isnt as good at deep sky objects (light gathering power). For your first scope personally I would get a skywatcher 150p on an eq 3-2 deluxe mount. This is a newtonian and far better for all sky objects, a kind of jack of all trades? Plus you can add a motordrive later to compensate for the earth's rotation and its also a great scope to attach a light dslr to. What budget do you have? A none computerised scope will get you to learn the heavens instead of relying on technology. Also join a local astro club, and the online group stargazers lounge and spend sometime chatting to people first, the heavens won't go anywhere plus winter months are far better for good visibility. Hi, great video. I just purchased the same scope and was wondering, is there anyway to balance the tube assembly in declination at all? I want to use the same mount also for a Skywatcher 102 short tube refractor which is a tad lighter just but a bit longer and I was wondering how the balancing or non-balancing will afect the tracking of the mount? Too be honest I wouldn't have thought balancing would be an issue with a short tube scope but there is no way of attaching a counterweight to a none eq style mount. I use my dslr on this rig and it doesn't even stutter. I imagine eventually the motors would wear out but this is true for any drive system? Let me know how you go on it sounds very interesting. @@garrygadget Hi, thanks for that, IO borrowed an EQ mount and put the short tube refractor on it fully loaded and marked the centre balance point on the DT bar. The scope did need pushing forward a little but not as much as I first anticipated fortunately, about 3" or so, I just thought it might be easier on the drive syste motors if it were in balance which it now is, certainly won't do it any harm I guess, can't do that with the Mak of course as the DT bar is way too short. Hey Gary, I am brand new to astronomy and my girlfriend offered me this piece. Is it me or anything because I can’t possibly scope any planet or star. I installed the telescope properly but can’t seem to find anything. Is there anything to configure with a pc to be able to scope something ? Thanks, Nelson
So have you got the same model as me? You can use the controller to just point to a star or planet without doing a star align but try and use the 3 star/planet align - its not easy and you have to ensure you set the time correctly in the handset or the telescope will think its somewhere completely diferent (Ive done this a few times and wondered why it was pointing at the floor!!!). Remember a star will only show a point of light irrespective of the scope you use as they are so far away. In the northern skies I can get Jupiter and Saturn quite early on after dark and this scope shows Jupiter as a gorgeous view - take your time and focus a bit at a time and slowly because the vibration of touching the scope will make it wobble. Good point, I find the diagonal increases the distance I can achieve focus with the asi224. Plugged straight into the telescope its not as easy plus I increases the chance of fumbling and dropping a 300 quid imager - the diagonal allows me to slot it in and tighten without worrying about it slipping out. As for reduced image quality, Im stacking frames from an object millions of miles away so the reduction isnt like using a camera on a photo shoot. Good point though - thanks for the comment.
So, do you get better views out of the image from compositing vs the eyepiece? For instance, would you have seen the Great Red Spot with just the eyepiece?
Yeah I have watched the red spot using the eyepiece but the stacked images always come out far better due to them removing all the atmospheric variations and shake etc. The same goes for the moon etc but the moon is very majestic in this scope - thanks for watching and commenting - if I can help in any way just ask.
Garry Gadget Thanks for the reply. I’m looking at upgrading significantly from what is probably a toy scope (200 dollar 4 inch Celestron) to something like a 10 inch dobsonian. I have a follow up question though. I love looking at the sky because, even though Saturn is barely recognizable in my scope, there’s the powerful emotion of seeing things almost a billion miles away (or light years away) with your own eyes. I imagine this is something all hobbyists feel. Do you find that to be the case with compositing your own images as well, versus just, looking at high res comps from something like Hubble? Thanks for your knowledge.
@@liambell2116 I am amazed at the clarity of images we can take with Hubble etc but you know when I first stood in my garden and saw Mars with my own eyes, a blurry small image but I could see the ice caps and watch as it changed colour due to a gigantic dust storm on its surface then this image meant far more than a NASA image of a Galaxy at the edge of our known Universe? A Dob will give you great views of deep sky objects etc and with a barlow lense you will get enough focal length to see Jupiter and Saturn but to photo image you will need a motor drive and as far as I know a Dob isnt the best at this? Go on stargazers lounge forum and have a good read (unless you already have). Going from a 4" Celestron to a big Dob is a huge boost but too be honest Celestron make pretty good kit and your scope is more than capable of viewing Saturn and seeing its ring shape. Have a look at a Skywatcher 200PD (the long tube version) with a goto drive? or a 2nd hand Mak like mine but a bigger version?
I use a canon mirrorless with an adapter just fine, I doubt it would like a heavy dslr attached due to motor strain as you can't counterbalance the load. A mirrorless is definitely fine though or say a canon 100d etc. Thanks for watching.
Hi Abood, yes mate sorry about the incorrect zwo title lol, I realised my mistake after I put the video together but Im glad you spotted it. Its a cracking telescope and with my DSLR its not too bad at deep sky objects even though say a skywatcher 150p fares far better but you are correct it is great for its size. Thanks for watching and Im glad it helped you. I had the Celestron 93973 Skyportal wifi from Amazon but I actually had it from the US site even though im in the uK as it worked out cheaper? The software for my phone and tablet is just called Skyportal and it available on android and IOS - just type in skyportal or clestron skyportal and its easily downloaded. The software is free and is used on ios and android, it is realy easy to usebut is mainly usefull if you own the wifi dongle I use in this video? Registax, sharpcap and autostakkert are all free programmes for your pc . Hi Destry I have mainly used it for planetry work as its long focal length makes it great for these objects but I will have to do more deep sky stuff' I know with a DSLR attached and stacking its pretty good at DSO's but wont be as good as a newtonian as its light gathering power isnt as good.

Hi Terry, really appreciate you watching and commenting mate. The 4se has the better mount and a bigger catalogue of objects (even though in real life most of these wouldnt be observable unless in a very dark sky location). The 127 though has the larger aperature so should give you better light gathering power and better resolution of deep sky objects. A newtonian will always give you better light gathering but these short tube scopes I think are awesome. If you can afford it the 5se is the one to go for but its very expensive compared to the 127.

@@tecnikturbo Hi Terry, no problem mate as Im more than happy to help in anyway I can - even though Im no expert myself. When you look through your scope at say Jupiter the image will flucuate due to atmospheric movement. This is worse at this time of the year because the planets are all quite low down so when you look at them you are looking through a big mass of air!!! BUT when I image using my zwo camera or if you used a dslr or any camera you put these images through software that bins the bad stuff and stacks the good stuff resulting in a far far clearer image than you can see just with your naked eye. I had the 150p and its really good, with a barlow lense double your zoom you will get good planetry images but the 127slt has a massive focal length giving even better lunar and planetry imaging. Personally Id buy the 150p and later on fit a motor which will track anything you look at for long enough periods for imaging and also this way you learn your way around the sky as the 127 just does it for you? I sold my 150p as I prefer planetry and lunar work but the 150p is a real jack of all trades. PS dont buy a dobsonian but get the eq3-2 deluxe mount. Its quite cheap and stable enough for what you need.

@@tecnikturbo the 127 has a greater focal length but in astronomy aperature is everything. The 150p is a real jack of all trades as scopes go. I use the 127 as im mainly into planetary work but as a newbie I'd go with the 150? Look on TH-cam for the stuff the skywatcher 150p can get you? They also do a 150pd that has a slightly bigger focal length for greater magnification? I'm only to happy to help Terry, where abouts are you anyway?
Hi, Ive not used it personally but looking at the mount it does look quite flimsy to me - and wobble is always your enemy with astro imaging? Is this your 1st scope you are after - as personally I would have a look at the skywatcher starquest series .They do a very nice refractor and also a 130 newtonian - the beauty of these is you can add on a cheap motordrive so once you are polar aligned (quite easy to do) the scope will track your object but also as its a manual scope you get more for your money and a bigger aperature which means you can see more?
@kunalrokade3433 a good jack of all trades would be a skywatcher 200p with goto drive but they are BIG. Or get the 127 for planets and a skywatcher starquest 102 for DSO stuff?
Hi the telescope was plugged into a 12v mains adapter so it can run all night, if you use AA batteries I'd think you'd get 2 to 4 hours maybe depending on temperature and if its only tracking an object once locked? You can buy celestron power packs but I've used far cheaper car booster packs before and they last ages.Thanks for watching, stay safe.

Hi, yes it can but I use a canon mirrorless for deep sky objects. A newtonian reflector would give you more light but a Mak is quite capable especially if you stack the images.

@@brian43203 Hi Brian, I use a Celestron wifi dongle that I got from Amazon ( I got it from the USA site as it worked out cheaper) and then use the skyportal software with it. The focuser I got froma chap that made them on ebay but ive checked and can't seem to find them anymore - the legit versions are just silly moneyto be honest. amzn.to/2CLT1YS this is the link to the dongle - I paid about 75 quid from the states for mine and took a weeks hipping. medium.com/swlh/diy-electric-focuser-for-celestron-127-slt-maksutov-cassegrain-db37ae826015 this is a website that shows how the focuser can be made. I just use a car powerpack to power the scope when Im away from a mains supply. I hope this helps?

@Colin3brown top be honest I've never seen the focuser I had as it was from ebay years ago.
Andromeda is basically too big lol, id say even with a 40mm eyepiece. It's more of a wide field object, like a skywatcher 80mm refractor.
The 127 is mainly brilliant at lunar and planetary work, but hey you never get tired of watching Jupiter.

This is a great video and I learned so much just from your walk through. I am brand new to astrophotography and just got a Celestron Nexstar 127. It all seems overwhelming at the moment and it was good just to see you go through your entire setup. It helps me understand the overall basics and it doesn't seem so overwhelming.
I did have two questions:
1. Did you use the handset and Sky align before you set up the cameras and computer, or did you just use the auto-align feature on the computer software?
2. I saw you drinking a Budweiser and was wondering if it is consider an expensive Import in your country because it's an American beer? (it's actually an average beer and we have a ton of excellent microbreweries that make much better brew)
Hi, thanks so much for watching and such a great comment. I use the app on my phone usually to align the telescope - but it sometimes takes a few times to get it to behave lol. I do like a Bud and no its very cheap to buy - its a good clean taste and not a heavy drink but I do like drinking diferent Ales as well - especially one called Plum Porter in the winter.
One day I will visit the states, and defo taste a few beers!!!!!!

My question relates to the ASI224MC. Does this mount directly replacing a standard eyepiece? Would also love any additional info on the remote focusser. The 127 is well documented for shake when manual focussing and its the next thing on my list to amend. I can find a manual version from another manufacturer that i can make fit but i really want something remote.

Hi sorry for the late reply, the 224 I put in place once my object is in the centre of the eyepiece.
Use a bag of sand hanging from the tripod to help stability.
The remote focuser I got years ago off ebay, its been great and was very cheap but unfortunately I've not seen one for sale in years.

Hi Gary, thanks for the video. I've recently purchased the Nexstar 127 slt scope and am loving it, apart from the vibration when I touch the focuser , which makes it very hard to focus! I've been trying to find a suitable motorised focuser but am struggling, would you be able to confirm that the piece of kit you have attached to your telescope is? Thanks Chris

Celestron sell one but it's over 200 quid but if you Google it there are plans online to make them.

Hello from the states I'm in Ohio Great Information Looking To Get Into Astrophotography not sure if the Mak -Cass is best for that or what is your opinion on reflectors or refractors I'm kind of lost although your pictures look amazing
Can I swap my cloudy skies for your forecast tomorrow - just checked as it says its sunshine and 31 degree's!!!!!!!!!!. You are totaly correct as the Mak- Cass due to its greater focal length makes it a superb device for lunar and planetry work but to get better deep sky objects they need to be a few inches bigger in aperature but these can cost big bucks. Before this 127 I owned a skywatcher 150p and it is a real good jack of all trades and the motordrive (albeit not a goto drive) is cheap and easy to fit. Something like a 150p or a 200p if you stretch to it with a barlow lense will give you good planetry stuff but as standard be very good at nebula and galaxy work. Also have a look at the new starquest series by skywatcher as the motordrive for those is absurdly easy to fit and very cheap which will give you your tracking and they do a 130p or a 102mm refractor in their range?

Yes mate its called sharpcap and you have to play around with the shutter speed etc to get the image on your pc. Its not like using a "normal" camera as in you will see an image on the screen of the camera. Also as you stack images an image that looks dim will come out much brighter?

Hi Garry, thank you for such an informative 'walk-through' of your telescope, it was very helpful indeed. I admit I bought mine as a total novice back in 2014 (walked in the shop for something else and came out with the 127slt) and it has basically lived in the box ever since, due to my complete lack of knowledge, the wobbly stand and no guidance whatsoever. I think the only thing I have ever looked at is the moon lol. May I ask a few questions please?
1. I can only seem to find one eye piece, 25mm which is on the telescope but do you have any advice or videos on buying/using different eye pieces please?
2. do you need to update the data info help in the telescope, if so, how do you do that please?
3. you have stated in a previous comment that the lens is sealed in the 127slt, so is it safe to wipe the outer glass/lens and the eye piece with a soft cloth, I have heard you should never touch them as you can ruin the coating
4. have you ever had trouble aligning the telescope from inside the house through double glazing? I have found this nearly impossible to do. Do you ever use it indoors?

Thanks for watching and subscribing but also for such a marvelous comment.
To be honest don't spend a fortune on a lense but get a celestron 10mm plossl and be amazed at your view of the moon. Use the 25mm for wide field objects and the moon or planets.Get them central then swap to the 10mm, a 2 times barlow would be a good bet as well.
Don't worry about firmware etc as stars don't change so as standard is fine.
Unfortunately never view through any window, it destroys the image and even an open window is no good due to air currents so I'm afraid getting cold is the only choice.
Try hanging a bag with pebbles or sand from the central struts to stabilise your tripod more?

Incredible video, any tips on cleaning the lens?
On the scope I use standard spectacle cloths or wipes as its a sealed scope compared to a Newtonian and on my ccd cam I use a fine air blower and antistatic brush.

The 130 is a far faster scope as in I think its an f5 compared to mine which is an f12 so you'd probably get better views of deep sky objects and with a 2 or at a push 3 times Barlow lense you get similar planetary views? The benefit of a mak is it won't go out of focus ( unless you drop it lol) and you don't have a cool down time so its quicker to get started?

Hi Garry I have a celestron nexstar 130slt I’m new in this I just bought a NexYz smartphone adapter and the ZWO Asi120mc. Can you please help me with recommendation for take good videos or pictures, what eyepieces need to make a good picture and how to use the Asi120mc
@@danielricardo3916 Hi daniel, Ive not used a phone holder myself but I imagine it would be best to experiment with your phone settings as usually manual is best and alter your iso etc if possible. Remember it sky align your scope and then test it with a 25mm eyepiece then a 10mm ensuring your objest of coice is central. The moon is always a nice easy target to start with, especially as we get its 1st phase soon and the craters and peaks will be really pronounced.
You need sharp cap to use your ZWO (the 120 is a cracking bit of kit). Connet your ZWO to yourpc/laptop via its usb cable and then alter the settings on the right as to the speed of the camera and this alters the image, on the moon dont go too btight as you can enhance it post imaging.
At the top of the screen click on capure and choose to keep capturing images until you click stop and you can see the amount of frames you have and number of dropped frames and stick with say 300 to 500 frames to start with.
Use Autostakkert (its what I use and to be honest watch a couple of tutorial vids on here first). This will stack your images, you just open your target folder that holds your captures and then the software will stack them.
Finish off by opening the image with your chosen/usual imaging software and enhance until you are happy.
Its a bit long winded and sticjk at it and honestly you will be blown away at what you can achieve.

Hi Garry. For those images you took is it just your camera connected to the telescope? No eyepiece at all? If you don’t have an eyepiece how are you able to achieve any magnification?
Yep just the cam and no lense, due to its massive folded focal length it already magnifies a hell of a lot. A barlow lense would reduce the light available.

I just got this scope and Id like to know does it matter where you put the scope on the computerized mount? I have seen some with it all the way up the mounting bracket and some in the middle and some at the end. is this a personal choose on where to mount it? and I have that mod that plugs to the aux to do the wifi star align and work off the app and yes I agree it take a few tries to get it to work, so do you think the star sense mod is worth to get and is it much easier to use?
How would it see through light pollution? is there some sort of filter I'd need? if so what?
Hi thanks for watching and commenting , yes you can get filters that help but ive never bothered as you can always use a filter in software when imaging?
To be honest light pollution is an enemy to most of us, but for the moon or planets which are bright it's not an issue. This isn't great at deep sky objects anyway but the orion nebula etc should be fine, just choose targets and give it a go.
in visual, can you see details in clusters, galaxies. Although is not a telescope for astrophotografy of dark objects, can you at least watch them from relalive poluted areas

Yeah it's fine, not so good for me knee's though.

Just look for skyportal on the app store.
You can't increase the power as in its light gathering as this is the diameter of the front part. You can increase magnification via a barlow tube or smaller lense ie a 6mm but increases reduce the amount of light. Don't worry about magnification as after say 150 times the image gets too poor to use.
I actually have so many questions about this scope, I’ve had it for a few years and have taken it out quiet a few times, I also have the standard eye piece kit that celestron offers. I have some slight trouble making out finer details of the plants and still can’t see any nebulas. The nebulas, if I correctly located them, look like a very blurry and faint set of dots with dim light, Is that even possible with this scope to see things like that?
It's not the best for eye visible DSO's but if you use a camera and stack the images its very good. I use a wide field refractor for naked eye viewing but a newtonian would be the best of all worlds. Again try stacking digital images of the planets and it will blow you away.

It’s more of life in the universe but I would not mind taking one up about telescopes to learn more about it. I have the whole set up to get started though, the celestron lens kit, the adapter and the unit itself, and so far I have been able to see basic things but I’m wondering how much detail should I be able to make out with it.

Hi Mitch , hope you have fun with your scope mate.
The dongle just means you can still align using the app on your phone plus this way it automatically puts in your date/time and location.
It also allows you to set the scope to a target of your choice using the software.
It can still be hit and miss just like the handset - you align it up fine then frustratingly states - alignment not done - AArrgghhh.
Personal choice mate, I like it and Im gald I got it but if it does your head in please don't blame me lol?
I think I might add the star align device at some point and then just use the dongle to get to my object of choice but again this is quite a big outlay.

Hi, yes the amount of light any telescope receives is more than a human eye will get so you can see fainter objects. In a city with light pollution you can see far more stars and in a dark skies area its awesome. Enjoy your scope, clear skies my friend.

Wow Garry, must congratulate you mate on a fantastic and informative upload, youve got my astronomy juices flowing big time, i have a more budget self tracking Celestron Reflector, only operable from the handheld pad though etc. I was going to venture into amateur photography but now i think i need to combine Photography/Astronomy photography, something ive always wanted to try, might get shot of my current scope and take a serious look at the 127 SLT or similar, many thanks again mate, stay safe :) p.s. have you caught the Starlink satellites yet?
Hi Rik, you will probably find that your reflector with a DSLR or mirrorless and a barlow lense will give you better images of deep sky objects (orion nebula etc) than my setup would as its light gathering power will be greater? The starlink - I managed to see one - it hasn't been as great as I expected but I hope we dont get a heavens full of them as it will be a right pain for astronomy lol. We are being carefull - hows things for you mate?

@@rikster738 any dslr will do and just do burst of say 20 second exposures and then stack the images. I think they went for the cheaper option with starlink to save the cost of a geo stationary orbit - just flood the heavens with small cheap sats for the same effect? Or they could be space gun platforms and Elon will take over the world?

Any scope or camera that isn't too heavy would work fine if aligned. The p1000 has a great zoom but it's sensor is too small for anything but lunar work I'd imagine?

I'm so glad this helped, too be honest always buy the widest aperture you can afford as light gathering power is king in astronomy. This 127 is a good do all scope but not as good at deep sky objects whereas a skywatcher 200p would give great nebula and galaxy views.

Good morning my friend! Do you know how long the 8 batteries last? I'm thinking about buying 8 rechargeable Duracell batteries, but I don't know how many hours they will last. And I need this idea to know whether to buy 8 batteries or 16 batteries (their price is high!)

sorry I haven't replied sooner, so not sure if you got sorted? They dont last long, your far better off buying a 12v adapter and running it from a power station to be honest. You only get a few hours on battery, even less if its cold.

Hi, thank you for such a lovely comment and I honestly don't think I deserve such praise - but yes I did enjoy making the video and the next time I get a spare and clear night I will do another.
The main thing that will affect your chances of seeing deep sky objects (DSO's) will be light pollution as a dark sky area will really help.
Also use an eyepiece with a big filed of view, as magnification isn't key for these obersvations.
The Andromeda Galaxy should be a good view as well as the M13 cluster and dumbell nebula. Make sure in a dark area you give your eyes a good 20 minutes to adjust before you start viewing.
With patience its amazing what you can witness with your telescope - just keep trying and write a list of objectives and then tick them off as each one is your own victory.

Honestly something like a skywatcher 150p would be my 1st choise as a starter scope as it would give you years of service. You can attached a motor drive quite easily to compensate for the earth's rotation and it comes with the required tubes to add a dslr for astrophotography (well mine did). A goto scope saves you time but teaches nothing about astronomy. Let me know what you end up doing and thanks for watching.

Hi, you have to make the alignment is spot on and try a faster shutter speed then stack the images?
All scopes will suffer this unless top quality and expensive lol.
Experiment on different shutter speeds and the one that's sharpest use that.

I think the skywatcher 150p is a great starter scope. Some recommend a dobsonian mount but personally I don't like them. The 200p is a better scope but heavier to move.
A 150p on a eq5 mount is great as a good mount is paramount as you can upgrade the scope at a later date. Have a look what's around 2nd hand?
Newtonian scopes may need aligning but watch a few videos on it as its not hard.
A scope like I say is all manual, easy to use and gives great results.

Garry, so my question is, Should I buy this Celestron - NexStar 127SLT Telescope as my first telescope?
Hi Moises, even though I love this 127 slt I have owned many scopes and this suits my needs for planetry viewing needs as it isnt as good at deep sky objects (light gathering power). For your first scope personally I would get a skywatcher 150p on an eq 3-2 deluxe mount. This is a newtonian and far better for all sky objects, a kind of jack of all trades?
Plus you can add a motordrive later to compensate for the earth's rotation and its also a great scope to attach a light dslr to.
What budget do you have?
A none computerised scope will get you to learn the heavens instead of relying on technology.
Also join a local astro club, and the online group stargazers lounge and spend sometime chatting to people first, the heavens won't go anywhere plus winter months are far better for good visibility.

Hi, great video. I just purchased the same scope and was wondering, is there anyway to balance the tube assembly in declination at all? I want to use the same mount also for a Skywatcher 102 short tube refractor which is a tad lighter just but a bit longer and I was wondering how the balancing or non-balancing will afect the tracking of the mount? Too be honest I wouldn't have thought balancing would be an issue with a short tube scope but there is no way of attaching a counterweight to a none eq style mount. I use my dslr on this rig and it doesn't even stutter. I imagine eventually the motors would wear out but this is true for any drive system?

@@garrygadget Hi, thanks for that, IO borrowed an EQ mount and put the short tube refractor on it fully loaded and marked the centre balance point on the DT bar. The scope did need pushing forward a little but not as much as I first anticipated fortunately, about 3" or so, I just thought it might be easier on the drive syste motors if it were in balance which it now is, certainly won't do it any harm I guess, can't do that with the Mak of course as the DT bar is way too short. So have you got the same model as me?
You can use the controller to just point to a star or planet without doing a star align but try and use the 3 star/planet align - its not easy and you have to ensure you set the time correctly in the handset or the telescope will think its somewhere completely diferent (Ive done this a few times and wondered why it was pointing at the floor!!!).
Remember a star will only show a point of light irrespective of the scope you use as they are so far away.
In the northern skies I can get Jupiter and Saturn quite early on after dark and this scope shows Jupiter as a gorgeous view - take your time and focus a bit at a time and slowly because the vibration of touching the scope will make it wobble.

Why have you got the camera plugged into the diagonal?. The diagonal only reduces the image quality and serves no purpose
Good point, I find the diagonal increases the distance I can achieve focus with the asi224. Plugged straight into the telescope its not as easy plus I increases the chance of fumbling and dropping a 300 quid imager - the diagonal allows me to slot it in and tighten without worrying about it slipping out.
As for reduced image quality, Im stacking frames from an object millions of miles away so the reduction isnt like using a camera on a photo shoot.

So, do you get better views out of the image from compositing vs the eyepiece? For instance, would you have seen the Great Red Spot with just the eyepiece?
Yeah I have watched the red spot using the eyepiece but the stacked images always come out far better due to them removing all the atmospheric variations and shake etc. The same goes for the moon etc but the moon is very majestic in this scope - thanks for watching and commenting - if I can help in any way just ask.
Garry Gadget Thanks for the reply. I’m looking at upgrading significantly from what is probably a toy scope (200 dollar 4 inch Celestron) to something like a 10 inch dobsonian. I have a follow up question though. I love looking at the sky because, even though Saturn is barely recognizable in my scope, there’s the powerful emotion of seeing things almost a billion miles away (or light years away) with your own eyes. I imagine this is something all hobbyists feel. Do you find that to be the case with compositing your own images as well, versus just, looking at high res comps from something like Hubble? Thanks for your knowledge.
@@liambell2116 I am amazed at the clarity of images we can take with Hubble etc but you know when I first stood in my garden and saw Mars with my own eyes, a blurry small image but I could see the ice caps and watch as it changed colour due to a gigantic dust storm on its surface then this image meant far more than a NASA image of a Galaxy at the edge of our known Universe?
A Dob will give you great views of deep sky objects etc and with a barlow lense you will get enough focal length to see Jupiter and Saturn but to photo image you will need a motor drive and as far as I know a Dob isnt the best at this? Go on stargazers lounge forum and have a good read (unless you already have).
Going from a 4" Celestron to a big Dob is a huge boost but too be honest Celestron make pretty good kit and your scope is more than capable of viewing Saturn and seeing its ring shape.
Have a look at a Skywatcher 200PD (the long tube version) with a goto drive? or a 2nd hand Mak like mine but a bigger version?
Can you attach a dslr through a T adapter?
I use a canon mirrorless with an adapter just fine, I doubt it would like a heavy dslr attached due to motor strain as you can't counterbalance the load. A mirrorless is definitely fine though or say a canon 100d etc. Thanks for watching.

Its a cracking telescope and with my DSLR its not too bad at deep sky objects even though say a skywatcher 150p fares far better but you are correct it is great for its size. I used to own a st80 as well and im thinking of getting the bigger ST120 soon for wide field views. Thanks for watching and please let me know how you go on?

Thanks for watching and Im glad it helped you. I had the Celestron 93973 Skyportal wifi from Amazon but I actually had it from the US site even though im in the uK as it worked out cheaper?
The software for my phone and tablet is just called Skyportal and it available on android and IOS - just type in skyportal or clestron skyportal and its easily downloaded.

The software is free and is used on ios and android, it is realy easy to usebut is mainly usefull if you own the wifi dongle I use in this video?
Registax, sharpcap and autostakkert are all free programmes for your pc .

Hi Destry I have mainly used it for planetry work as its long focal length makes it great for these objects but I will have to do more deep sky stuff' I know with a DSLR attached and stacking its pretty good at DSO's but wont be as good as a newtonian as its light gathering power isnt as good.

Hi Terry, really appreciate you watching and commenting mate. The 4se has the better mount and a bigger catalogue of objects (even though in real life most of these wouldnt be observable unless in a very dark sky location). The 127 though has the larger aperature so should give you better light gathering power and better resolution of deep sky objects. A newtonian will always give you better light gathering but these short tube scopes I think are awesome. If you can afford it the 5se is the one to go for but its very expensive compared to the 127.

@@tecnikturbo Hi Terry, no problem mate as Im more than happy to help in anyway I can - even though Im no expert myself. When you look through your scope at say Jupiter the image will flucuate due to atmospheric movement. This is worse at this time of the year because the planets are all quite low down so when you look at them you are looking through a big mass of air!!! BUT when I image using my zwo camera or if you used a dslr or any camera you put these images through software that bins the bad stuff and stacks the good stuff resulting in a far far clearer image than you can see just with your naked eye.
I had the 150p and its really good, with a barlow lense double your zoom you will get good planetry images but the 127slt has a massive focal length giving even better lunar and planetry imaging.
Personally Id buy the 150p and later on fit a motor which will track anything you look at for long enough periods for imaging and also this way you learn your way around the sky as the 127 just does it for you?
I sold my 150p as I prefer planetry and lunar work but the 150p is a real jack of all trades. PS dont buy a dobsonian but get the eq3-2 deluxe mount. Its quite cheap and stable enough for what you need.

Hi, Ive not used it personally but looking at the mount it does look quite flimsy to me - and wobble is always your enemy with astro imaging? Is this your 1st scope you are after - as personally I would have a look at the skywatcher starquest series .They do a very nice refractor and also a 130 newtonian - the beauty of these is you can add on a cheap motordrive so once you are polar aligned (quite easy to do) the scope will track your object but also as its a manual scope you get more for your money and a bigger aperature which means you can see more?

In all honesty, no not really. You'd be better with a newtonian, the 127 is better for planetary and lunar.

Hi the telescope was plugged into a 12v mains adapter so it can run all night, if you use AA batteries I'd think you'd get 2 to 4 hours maybe depending on temperature and if its only tracking an object once locked? You can buy celestron power packs but I've used far cheaper car booster packs before and they last ages.Thanks for watching, stay safe.

Hi, yes it can but I use a canon mirrorless for deep sky objects. A newtonian reflector would give you more light but a Mak is quite capable especially if you stack the images.

Hi, the 127 has a 5 inch aperture vs 4 inches on the 4se so will gather more light plus it can achieve a higher magnification so yes I would say it is.

@@brian43203 Hi Brian, I use a Celestron wifi dongle that I got from Amazon ( I got it from the USA site as it worked out cheaper) and then use the skyportal software with it.
The focuser I got froma chap that made them on ebay but ive checked and can't seem to find them anymore - the legit versions are just silly moneyto be honest.

I just use a car powerpack to power the scope when Im away from a mains supply.

It can be a bit of a faff to setup but its still easier than the hand set for for me? You can buy a starsense for it which is totally automated but its very expensive. Thanks for watching and commenting.
