It was wrong to say "he doesn't win a lot of non-paced races." He wins a lot of all races. He is the best on earth at winning middle distance races. But he is definitely beatable by a few guys like Kerr on the right day. Doesn't help that he is trying to double at these same events.

As a Norwegian, I have no issues with some smack-talk in world athletics. Media exposure is important for professional sports and a bit of grit and rivalry is excellent (look at Carlsen and Nakamura saving chess more than a decade ago by their rivalry bringing chess into the interwebs and being spicy).
Let Kerr talk and then let them run for us to watch. He is the WC after all.

As a chess player I find your comparison hilarious. I'm an expert level chess player and have been playing for years. Although there may be some truth in what you're saying chess wasn't "saved" by anyone. The game as we know it is over 500 years old. I would argue the pandemic had a lot more to do with the popularity of chess then any rivalries between players. Hikaru, with all his faults, singlehandedly had more impact on the game's popularity than any rivalry in the sport. Neimann's awkward legacy also had a huge impact the game's popularity today. But I get your point, drama sells.

Over-stated by @glacieractivity but still somewhat true. Nakamura's spats did increase the popularity of Chess. Although that's mostly due to Nakamura's personality and his pre-existing fan base. For example nobody really cared about Giri and Carlsen's rivalry or Kramnik and Carlsen because neither had big enough cult of personality already.

I get his point that Jakob is vulnerable in championships. Front running makes him vulnerable. But he's still less vulnerable than everyone else. Because who else is guaranteed a top 2 finish every time they race?

@@jsherrier1196 in order to win a race like that, you have to be tactical. Everyone wants to win, so if you lead the majority of the race, there will be at least one runner who's drafted off you the entire time, who can then beat you in the finish because you've done all the hard work up until the last lap. These guys are world class and if they want to win an olympic gold, they're capable of keeping with the leaders no matter how fast they run, and in a 1500 nobody will let you take a healthy lead becase the race is so short. So by racing from the front, Jakob risks being beaten if he doesn't throw down a 3.27/3.28. The time he ran at the world championships was very beatable, hence why Kerr beat him in the finish, had Jakob let someone else lead, the chances are he'd have had it in the bag on the last straight. Ignoring what he said about the 5000, when you run in the world championships and you race from the front, unless you have a perfect race, someone will draft off you and pip you to the finish - generally speaking, if you want to win a race like that, you don't go flat out otherwise you risk losing it in a finish - I wouldnt be surprised if Jakob is overconfident, and by going out too fast thinking nobody will hold him, he absolutely risks being beaten if he doesn't run near world record pace, because all these guys are physically capable of running sub 3.29 if pushed

If there’s a pacer, then he’s handed that on a plate, but if he has to do extra work up front, then it’s going to be difficult for him to win the big races.

And to call him not self aware is ridiculous, having been around him during 2023 he knows exactly what he's doing. Plus it's lowkey warranted. Jakob gave Kerr absolutely no credit after his win at the champs and put it all down to an illness. I think Kerr addressed this well in the pod comparing an illness to an injury, staying illness free is all part of the game, if you can't do that then that's on you, don't use it as an excuse just be better.

He said as a child and teenager he would always listen to his father and brothers experience and what to avoid, but the last few years, he never listens and is very rude to them. You can see he has gone out of control. Now compare him to Hicham El Guerrouj, not a single person said a bad thing about him, they always stated he was very humble even though he was far better than everyone else, his humilty was wonderful and they respected him more for that than his amazing performances.

Jakob is a talented long distance runner but he love 1500 m more and would like to run that distance untill he is to slow.
Many people think he just is a 1500 m runner in the WC for 5000, but 3000 m or 5000 m is may be his best distances, over time 10.000 m.
Two men with high knowledge in athletics, one of them an Olympic Champion the other an respected sports commentator which has been leading a trainings podcast, and their knowledge in running is at the top level where they have followed Jakob from his young running life. They told most people think he is a 1500 m runner using his speed at 5000, but they was sure Jakob was capable of aprox 12.30 at 5.000, but Jakob has as always never mentioned anything like that, but I heard he agreed that his talent is 5000 and his training is long distance.
I think Jakob and his training is a big reason of the increasing quality at 1500 m the last seasons. In 2022 he failed in his tactic and was pissed at himself because he was distracted by an other runner and run like an idiot before the last lap, and as he said then it's too late.
But I think its funny when Kerr is telling us that Jakob cannot run without rabits, but everybody but Jakob was running with pacer in WC, also Kerr, and in all the other races Jakob is the last pacer for everyone in the field and he is towing the hole fields to world class P.B.
I think this accusations is bloody anfair because Jakob is a introvert type that don t like interviews, but when everybody ask him he has to give answers, because they don't stop before he have answered. All his words is analyzed, criticized, and often taken out og context.
The first thing he said in an interview after he finished second in the last WC was that he was not best today and Kerr was better than me, but when some people knew he was in the best chape of the year some days before and because of rumers of his fever and inflammation the evening before of course he was asked about this again and again when he tried to downplay it. But because he was so big favorite, and the time at this fast track just was in the middle of 3.29 some journalists at least got him to admire that he was sorry to be sick this day, and of course he had not been a sportsman at this level if he had not been sorry for this, but he didn't want to take thiese interviews, and because he tried to play his sickness down someone that not have the hole story can say he has excuses, but when some people knew he was ill what should he at last do? This story of the nr 2 or the next one is also taken some out of context, if he of one person is asked what number he looked at Kerr in the competition before the race he was nr, 2. No one could say that Kerr was better than nr2 in the overall season. Jakob have to have a clear head in the competitions, but also when he is going from interview to interview he has to remember don't saying anything which could be taken out of context to make other stories. We should try to remember his is not an easy task.

A paced race is one where a runner leads at a more or less prescribed pace and has little or no intention of competing, possibly even of completing, the entire distance. This is what happens in almost all Diamond League middle distance and distance races. It only occasionally happens in a WC or OG final, usually when two runners from the same country are in the race, but one of them is clearly better than the other. The 1968 OG 1500 meters springs to my mind as an example.
The fact that a runner chooses to sit on the leader’s shoulder with the intention of eventually sprinting to victory does not by itself constitute a paced race.

    • @jamie.lennon1
      @jamie.lennon1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's true that he lacks 800m speed. Which is why he makes it a 1500m race and leads from the gun. But for Kerr to call that a "major weakness" is nonsense because Jakob is literally the most consistent runner in the world.
He hasn't finished outside the top 2 in any race since 2019. Who else is that consistent? Nobody.
Having good 800m speed does pay off sometimes. But having superior endurance pays off more often. So endurance training is Jakob's focus. And it has guaranteed him a 🥇 or 🥈 every time he lines up. Hard to critique that!

It still is a valid point that in tactical races Ingerbritsen may be vulnerable. Pacing the first lap is one thing, pacing the second and third is another.
Remember qualification rounds do not count. Ingerbritsen is 7-2 against Kerr and losing the World Championships is a big one.

After watching and listening to Josh Kerr, it seems like he's quite bitter about being quite a bit behind Jakob, who is three years younger, in everything. Of course, he should be happy about his World Championship gold, but he defeated an unwell Jakob who was strongly advised by doctors not to compete in that race. Furthermore, Jakob doesn't need a pacemaker to win his big races; most of the time, it's Jakob who leads the entire field of runners to new personal records. If Jakob is injury-free and healthy, he's incredibly tough (!) to beat in everything from 1500m to 5000m, including the 3000m hurdles. When it comes to strategic running, Kerr, in my opinion, has much more to learn than Jakob. I know a very effective strategy that Jakob employs; he trains both more and better than everyone else, which, in turn, gives him a GREAT sense of mastery when he stands on the starting line.
