Abruzzi paid the guards, specifically Bellick, he dominated the prison. Abruzzi was a wasted character but of course I understand that he was a character that the writers could not give more room to, since having resources he could disappear, but he was the only one who, despite being a mafioso, was the only one who dared to face Bagwell and throw him out of the group. In addition, in a certain way, Abruzzi did justice that Bagwell's pain from the hand is greater than what he feels while being imprisoned for life.
He was the series' most powerful character after Krantz, he was a mob boss with power, men and resources. If he stayed, taking down the company would be piece of cake with him in a picture.
T-Bag and Jamie Lannister are basically the sam character - incestouos, got their arm choped off, hate them at the beginning of the show, love them at the end
Why did you love him in the end though? He's a rapist, pedophile, murderer and a rat. Best actor in the series by far. Also the most intriguing character, but still a waste of oxygen.

That's the whole point of his character arc in season 4. He wanted to become a good guy and just become a sailsman and actually be Cole Pheifer (or however you spell his fucking name) but Gretchen and the Scylla team kept ruining that. He was tryna get away from them. And he also felt really sympathetic when his Co-workers got killed by Gretchen and when Bellick died. You could see it in his face. He actually was friends with them. And in season 5, he's actually a completely changed man.

The actor didn't wanna do a series that would never end. So they used Abruzzi's death to convey how boned they could be. With his mob connections John was the most likely to get away so Mahone catching him first helped legitimize him as a threat
Sometimes humans don't think immediately by using better rationality. They probably would've attempted those solutions but Abruzzi's revenge got in the way.
