    Great video, I am Irish American my mothers parents were Irish immigrants from Donegal and spoke Gaelic and English. I do say Gaelic because in the Irish language it is referred to as Gealic and not Irish. I appreciate the part where it is explained that Irish people do in fact wear kilts on certain occasions. While yes modern kilts were invented by England for Scottish regiments originally modern kilts were also applied to the Irish. My Irish grandfather wore Irish kilts that is the saffron kilt which was an English rendition of the older Irish Leine which was a saffron tunic with the bottom part resembled what we would see as a modern kilt. The GAA and others applied that to Irish step dancing uniforms. This was also applied to both the Irish pipers in the British army for Irish regiments and the Irish pipers of the military of the Irish republic. The modern kilt invented by England is shared in both Irish and Scottish culture. While both cultures reserve the kilt for special occasions it is true that it is more prevalent in Scotland bc of the fact it was invented first for Scots. It is important to remember that the Scots and the Irish both originally ware variations of the same Gaelic garnet which was lei ie or pleated shirt with tartan capes. In Scotland the cape was belted and evolved into a toga like garment of tartan while in Ireland the garment remained shirt like. The point is the modern kilt does involve both cultures and while it is more prevalent in Scotland it is not something unconnected to Ireland.

    The way I see it, being an ice hockey fan myself, anyone asking for clarification between ice/field hockey from an area where ice isn't the popularized sport shouldn't be all that concerned about asking. Anyone that gets their knickers in a twist when asked should take a chill pill, sit in the corner, and stop being a doo doo head. 😸

    Mix in some diced sweet onions.
    Make 2 thin patties.
    Place cheddar cheese w minced jalapeno peppers on top of one pattie. Cover with second patties and pinch edges together. Grill to your liking. Add lettice, tomatoes and grilled mushrooms. I like mine with mayo, ketchup, alil mustard and a garlic pickle on the side. Get your favorite potatoe chip and go to town. Mine would be traditional bbq.

    My father was a native Gaelic speaker from the Gaeltacht in Gweedore, Donegal. His first language was Gaelic. In the Gaeltacht, it is always referred to as "Gaelic", never "Irish".

    The rule in the Gaeltacht is that if you use a word of English after registration when you're in then you're sent home. I was a bit occupied chatting away during the registration once the coach drop us off, so when the role call came round and my name was called out I said "here". The correct answer was "anseo"! By a technicality, I hadn't formally registered so got to stay despite my indiscretion.
    Though seriously - Ireland + Scotland - so much in common!

    Grew up in US (PA). There was hockey (ice) and field hockey.
    The school I was at, and indeed the whole county, did not teach either. The sports we actually had teams for at school were*: football (American, boys only), baseball(boys), track and field (boys and girls), cross-country(boys), tennis(both), golf(boys), basketball(both), wrestling(boys), gymnastics(girls). 'Soccer' was not big at all, although we were taught the basics in gym class. We hardly ever played.

    It would be so interesting to see you girls do an Ancestry DNA kit!! I’m an American and my family is from Kentucky. I was always taught my family history and knew I was Scottish, Irish, English and Cherokee Indian. My family were the people that settled the Southern Appalachian area in the 1600 and 1700’s. My DNA kit only confirmed my oral family history. I’m 62% Great Britain, 30% Irish, Scottish and Welsh, 7% Norwegian and 1% American Indian. I also giggled watching your other video about common misconceptions about Scottish people and that they are all redheads. My family is a full of redheads! I’m a redhead as were both of my grandmothers. My dad and his brothers all had black hair but red beards! My son as well has light brown hair and a beautiful red beard. You can’t go anywhere in this area without seeing several redheads. Lol!! It’s so common. Love the videos!!! Have a great day!!

    Fun comparisons and cultural trivia there... I did want to make sure I was not messing up about the Gaelic / Irish term when referring to the native language. It turns out that both are correct, however it is based on the speaker making the reference. The Irish language is the Celtic language of Ireland (the same one as “Irish Gaelic”). Irish people generally refer to the language of Ireland simply as “Irish“. “Gaeilge” is the name for Irish in the Irish language. ... Gaeilge is the word where the English language word “Gaelic” is derived from.
    Hence, when a speaker of the English language says Gaelic for the language of Ireland they are using the English word for Gaeilge which is the Irish name for Irish. The English word for the language Gaelic = The Irish word for the language Gaeilge. Ironically the word "Irish" is therefore the odd man out and is not really the name of a language even though the people of Ireland say "Irish". Very interesting.
    Gaelic = Gaeilge
    Spanish = Español
    Italian = Italiano
    Japanese = Nihonjin = 日本人
    etc.
    I always thought that "Irish" was the English term for the people or Ireland and Gaelic was the English term for the language. Apparently that sentence is correct from an English speaking syntax. This sort of stuff is so interesting.

    • @goldenager59
      @goldenager59 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder... Does "Gaelic" derive, perhaps, from "Gallic" - which is to say, as referring to the Celtic folk that dwelt in Gaul once upon a time? 🤨 🙂

    • @internetual7350
      @internetual7350 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goldenager59 I wouldn't say so considering the Gaelic languages are "Q-Celtic" and derive from Celtiberian rather than "P-Celtic" Gaulish.

      Ah? ...Interesting indeed. Also, I was under the impression that "Irish" as an adjective was derived from what I understood to be the traditional native name of the island, "Eirinn" or "Erin", and so need not necessarily be termed an "odd man out"...unless I'm missing a nuance here or there. 🤨 🇮🇪 🙂

    • @internetual7350
      @internetual7350 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@goldenager59 Irish does indeed come from Éire, in Irish we are refered to as "Éireannach" and both names come from the Gaelic goddess of Ireland Ériu.

    In the States, we call it "field hockey" when it's play on the grass on a pitch. I have an Aussie friend who kept talking about playing hockey, how she was sore from playing hockey, etc., and then she talked about how she got sunburnt during a game.
    And I was like, "Ummm...okay, now I'm confused."
    And she said, "Oh, no, not the kind on skates/ice..."
    It had been YEARS, and I'd thought the whole time she was a master of ice skating; I'm from the northern part of the American midwest, and it had never occurred to me that there was a whole *league* for anything other than ice hockey! :-)
