I love going back and watching the videos from a few months and really feeling how much your content has improved. Keep up the great work guys, love your stuff!
the moxfield ad was maybe the funniest transition for an ad i’ve ever seen. actually got me laughing especially seeing joe’s face reacting to beezy’s description of the “card description”
Id like to say that your guys’ channel has influenced my deckbuilding so much. I’ve got an Elesh Norn deck and I added robe of stars to my stoneforge package in it thanks to your guys’ recommendation from a bit ago and holyyyyy I’m always happy w/ that card and how it performs. Not to mention all the other tech and advice thats always helpful. Cheers to yall
For anyone in the UK, Amazon has reduced the cost of the galea precon. Considering the value and cards in that deck (robe of stars included!), it might be worth a look!
The art work on robe of stars is insane. All I know is the equipment that make your creature a changeling better be on this list as the best tribal equipment
Sword of hearth and home also has a ton of infinites that give extra combat steps on top of being much better than sword of the animist. Whenever you flicker a creature, IE Aurelia the warleader, she always gets the first attack trigger! Also combos with godo in samurai tribal but you need a haste banner
My initial thoughts are the ones I use most.. tied to draw, ramp or utility, which are: Skullclamp, Shadowspear, Dowsing Dagger, Sword of the Animist, Sword of Hearth and Home, Robe of Stars, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots My vote for Skullclamp being #1 before watching the video
Sword of Hearth and Home would've been a spot on my list. Infinite battle triggers with anything that provides additional combat triggers and another monster, crazy amounts of land drops, and pair with double strike to double the output. Crazy combo potential there.
Gotta say, I love moxfield. I've always had a hard time with my decks being changed over time and it being a hassle. Moxfield also allowing you to goldfish decks is incredible.
I got into commander a few months ago and I've been learning a ton from you guys! Thanks so much. Using Shadowspear to Nature's Claim Purphoros sounds hilarious and now I want one in my Galea deck.
When you go make a pun, but seconds later the content creators themselves make the same exact pun you were gonna make, you KNOW you’ve found the right channel. (It was the Ambercleave pun by the way)
I don’t know if it’s going to be on here, but I think Conquerors Flail is the most underrated equipment by far. Silence/Grand Abolisher in an artifact is super powerful and it does work in multi color decks to boot.
I first started playing in the midst of the first Mirrodin block. I loved the idea of Equipment from the outset and have continued to enjoy new weapons and pieces of armor iin every new set. From Sword of Fire and Ice and Bonesplitter to Umezawa's Jitte, Skullclamp to Loxodon Warhammer, and Embercleave I love them all. Now let's get to watching today's episode!
I also like the reconfigure creatures, I’ve found they scale really well. Dockside Chef is on curve as early card draw and then you can sack him later, Lizard Blades can get the slower decks for 2 before you start reconfiguring it onto other creatures, and if you draw Ambercleave, Lizard Blades can attack to help with the discount on the equipment upgrade.
I’ve tried to make dockside chef work a couple times, but it’s never felt good to me. I basically never find myself wanting to use it. It’s usually better just to Skullclamp the creature, Or sacrifice it to a different, free sacrifice outlet and draw a card from a different triggered ability
@@HomeCookinMTG Yeah, those are better options, but they take longer to set up. If you are in a deck that doesn’t care about hitting the ground running then he probably won’t be that great. You kind of have to think about the reconfigure cards like mdfc’s, where they aren’t your first pick for card draw (or anything else), but they are a good versatile pick to round out the other slots dedicated to that purpose. They are rarely a dead card, and if you never use the Chef for card draw you only paid 1b for sac fodder. I even like it in a Golgari deck, where I want to be playing 2 drop ramp spells. I can be drawing into my better sack outlets by turn 3 and 4 (which is when I have enough mana for most of them).
I play Dockside in Junji and Teysa and its been pretty good for me. There are definitely better options out there but for a 1 drop creature that can sac creatures/artifacts and draw cards its solid im not gonna lie, at least from the testing ive done w it
Its good in aristocrat decks that run out of steam, that need non-token bodies to sac and always need access to draw. Most rakdos sac decks fall into this archtype
Just want to throw out that Sword of Hearth and Home is another Sword of X&Y that has infinite combos. 1) Sword on a creature + Aurelia both attacking 2) Sword on a creature + Combat Celebrant / Scourge of the Throne / Port Razor + plus a haste effect for all your creatures 3) (and a spicy one) Sword on a creature + a Torpor Orb effect + and commander staple, Worfang Manta on the battlefield. Target Manta with the Sword trigger and get that sweet LTB with no downside! But for real. I've been REALLY impressed with Hearth and Home. Only slight more expensive than Sword of the Animist, but give you way better stats at baseline, and most decks have even a few creatures with ETBs. It also returns creatures from steal effects in the narrow cases that it matters!
I use the swords in my Yasova deck. I love her because she's my most obscure commander. Gave her an upgrade package recently with all the swords and shocks/fetches. Also, absolutely agree with umbra. I run it in my cEDH GW Selvala deck. Sword of the paruns is a bad alternative. It's a kill on sight card because they know I'm going to win when I cast it.
@@NitpickingNerds Ambercleave 2WG Flash Ambercleave costs 1 less to cast for each attacking cat you control. When Ambercleave enters the battlefield, attach it to target creature you control. If that creature is a cat, destroy up to one target artifact. Equipped creature gains double-strike.
Feast and famine has to be on there, I think shadowspear will be on there probably also helm of the host Edit: 2 for 3 isn’t bad. I always forget embercleave exists… I still need to pick some up
Putting embercleave above feast and famine is honestly a laughable bad take. And how they hype it up. Well this 5/5, for just 5 mana you bring it to 12 damage. This is more than double. Yeah it's also incredible bad compared to untap all your fucking lands and basicly get an extra turn. Even in the best case scenario you oneshot one of three opponents. The sword gives you an massiv ramp boost and also cripples the hand of your opponents which helps to develope your game. If you take the colour restriction into consideration it's even worse. The only thing that embercleave has going for it is the price. Maybe in a red budget deck.
Clicked since I'm building an equipment deck and I wanted to catch up on equipment that's come out since I stopped playing about 5 years ago. Good video, and I loved the wrestling references!
I think Sword of Hearth and Home should belong somewhere on the list. Yes, it's a little more expensive mana-wise than Sword of the Animist, but most decks run at least some amount of etb-creatures. I think that alone would make it a consideration to run over Sword of the Animist, but the +2/+2 and pro green/white make it a pretty clear upgrade in my eyes.
Card is ridiculous. It says blink a creature you own meaning you can blink things your opponents stole and return them or if your mean like me you can keep blinking your own gilded drake to swipe everyone's creatures
I'm really surprised you didn't include Sword of Hearth and Home. You get pro white and green so you dodge Path, Swords, Beast Within, and Generous Gift, you get built in evasion so you can connect, your land comes in untapped, and you get retrigger the creature's etb ability. I am shocked that Sword of the Animist makes it but Sword of Hearth and Home doesn't.
Great vid, good length, I appreciate how most of the cards you listed included "similar cards that aren't as good" which is important for helping people identify good commander cards vs traps.
I absolutely love Lion Sash. It's a better version of Scavenging Ooze. I can't tell you how many games Scooze has given me the advantage over my opponents. Green has Old Gnawbone for the additional mana for Scooze. White has Smothering Tithe. Absolutely incredible
The tidbit is the only reason why I click on your videos (that's a lie), because I already know everything about commander (that's also a lie). Please bring the tidbit back - I love it (no lie here).
Bloodforged Battle-Axe should have at least had honerable mention. I have also had a lot of success using Inquisitors Flail in combination with Double Strike to quadruple damage. You can commander damage someone out with a 6/6. I once put Fireshrieker, Kusari-Gama, and Inquisitors Flail on a Gideon Blackblade and it was busted.
Used to run skullclamp in my Shirei shadowborn apostles deck, thanks for pointing out that doesn't work btw, still run it in my Slimefoot deck. Feels great to clamp a few saprolings, draw a few cards and drain a few life for so cheap
Glad I watched this video. Just got a skullclamp for my squirrel commander deck and was about to take it out cause I got the old version of Skullclamp and I thought it wouldn't work with killing tokens
I'm very torn about Sword of the Animist vs Hearth and Home. SOA's main advantage is that it can be more reliably active a turn sooner when in your opening hand. In a solid start you can go 1) ramp 2) creature 3) cast and equip animist, attack. But the value of these cards isn't based on their first trigger, which you point out, it is based on the value they provide throughout the game. Very quickly HH surpasses the value of SOA by providing an extra creature etb effect, lands that come in untapped instead of tapped, and the increased P/T and Pro white/green. White is extremely relevant with swords, path and generous gift everywhere, but the pro green often lets you push through damage unblocked on gummed up boards. That said, SOA triggers an attack, not damage. If all you're looking for from this equipment is a ramp spell, then it SOA does get land 1 turn sooner. But if I draw SOA later in the game, it is extremely low impact. If I draw HH at any point, I'm happy to play and will get more value from it.
Skull clamp obviously, but One Equipment I really like is Sword of Light and Darkness, It protect one of your creature from most Removal, and let you get back Creature from your graveyard.
I think I'd put Shadowspear higher personally, probably around Lion Sash. My reasoning? It can be used when not equipped to turn off your opponents's shields, and it can be used politically. too.

pair shadowspear with basilisk collar (or anything else that grants deathtouch) because trample-deathtouch means you only assign one damage to a blocker and the rest gets thru
No love for sword of Hearth and Home? That thing easily runs away with games in any deck with a few good etb triggers. And most decks have enough of those to make it reliable. The protection it offers is excellent and it ramps. Personally I put it up there with Feast and Famine because either on can win a game outright if left unanswered.
Honourable mentions to Sword of Hearth and Home, Godsend, and Kaldra Compleat. Would personally say the sword is stronger than Sword of the Animist - costs 1 more to play, but gives an extra +1/+1, protection from two relevant colours, tutors the land in untapped, and also has synergies with creature ETBs! Only other drawback is needing to connect rather than just attack, but the protection helps with that. I guess people might see it as more of a threat so it's more likely to get removed, but does that make it a worse card?
Also skullclamp, somehow people miss this but kykar. I don't know how because even it you have cathars you can still sac for red get the 2 cards and have it floating to equip to the next spitit
Haven't seen it yet but I'm guessing there won't be even an honorable mention for the best combo peice card and underrated equipment of all time: spy kit.
You guys are fantastic hosts and constantly keep me interested and intrigued each video. Please know you guys make great videos and entertain me and everyone constantly!
I don't get colored artifacts. Just make them enchantments or something if you want to put restrictions on them. The whole cool thing about artifacts was that any color had access to their abilities, but now Embercleave is just another Red card.
I think Shadowspear should definitely be higher. Embercleave can end one person’s turn, but you have to hold up 6 mana and it only goes in Red. Same with Lion Sash. I don’t think any color restricted cards should be near the top of the list since they can’t go in everything. Shadowspear literally gets around Swiftfoot Boots for 1. The fact that it doesn’t sac to do this, and is easily repeatable puts it past Embercleave for sure. Agree with top two though.
That legendary blade that removes indestructible from my opponents. I don’t remember what it’s called but there are artifacts that remove indestructible and if I don’t have that, that’s what I lose to

Somewhat surprised at the lack of a sunforger here, but also not since it's restricted to needing boros in your deck
I'm glad that I have most of those and play them and wish the others ones would be more affordable, but the video help me checking for prices drop
If Skullclamp isn't number 1 some tokens are gonna die...
What's a "skullclamp" 👀
Of these cards only 3 are not in my syr Gwyn deck and that makes me happy
Moxfield ad done right
Thank you 😂
Happy birthday!!!
Right when I was about to get home and brew Rograkh x Ardenn!
I think Commander’s Plate is so good in a mono color deck. I run it in Adeline and making her have pro everything not white is so good
Great episode
embercleave is also sick if your attacker has an ability that triggers on damaging an opponent.
I don't get colored artifacts. Just make them enchantments or something if you want to put restrictions on them. The whole cool thing about artifacts was that any color had access to their abilities, but now Embercleave is just another Red card.
70,000 subs, nice guys!
Hey guys you missed the real good key for Nim Deathmantle. Priest of Gix and Urabrask are infinite mana for Nim and Ashnod's
I agree that Shadowspear is the better of the two cards, but when has anybody ever actually cast Embercleave for six mana?
That legendary blade that removes indestructible from my opponents. I don’t remember what it’s called but there are artifacts that remove indestructible and if I don’t have that, that’s what I lose to
Robe of stars has done great in Doran thanks to the toughness boost
Lion Sash and Stoneforge Mystic are attached at the hip… accidental pun… because a sash is held on hips. 😂
Sword of Feast and Famine is not the only Sword of X and Y with infinite combos.
What are the others, just Hearth and Home and Aurelia?
@@NitpickingNerds That's at least the one I had in mind :)
@@NitpickingNerds Also most creatures that can get you extra combats if you give them haste
Title should be "Skullclamp and the rest".
Loving that Aubrey shirt
Aubrey Edwards is a great character and ref!
