Great and thorough review and comparison! I had this exact dilemma last fall. I went with the Tallboy and am so glad I did. I was leaning towards the Hightower initially due to the safety blanket factor. Still, once I got honest with myself, most of my riding is done on my local trails with only a few visits to the downhill park during the season. The Hightower would have been too much bike for local riding, and the Tallboy still is able to handle the occasional bike park...I just add a token into the fork to limit it from bottoming out.

Good timing, I was just looking for this vid :) Good vid, liked the arguments. I’ve been fairly sure for a while that I want to go for a hightower, but the last few days, I’m starting to doubt between that and the tallboy. Like you said, playing around is very important, have a fun bike. This will be my only bike, and although I do live somewhere where my day2day ride is dead flat, descending, jumping and riding bike parks is high on the list

Coming from a Trek Marlin 5 which would you recommend?
Thanks for the video, this certainly helps. Still can't decide though. I live in the High Peak and have some pretty technical rocky stuff, but also will use this for longer rides and want to enjoy the ups as well as those downs. I'll probably do a couple of parks a year, and used to ride a hard tail and BMX dirt jumps years ago. I like the idea of the lighter more responsive Tall Boy, but as I get old, I can't help but think the High Tower will come into its own and let me take on more routes. It does feel like a flip of a coin is needed!
Hightower all the way, a versatile bike that won’t disappoint or lack travel on the technical trails or bike parks and a very comfortable, yet active bike on the climbs.
The Tallboy will handle the majority you throw at it but does reach its limitations a lot quicker.
Give us a call at the shop and we can go through it more in depth if you like. We’re open Tues-FRI 10-6 and Saturday 10-3. And we can always flip that coin! ;)

What size do you ride? And what's your height?
Great video, I’m looking at both of these now. Hold over aluminum frame bikes. For a 6’1” rider would you go with a L or XL frame in the Santa Cruz line

Great video. I bought a 2022 5010 C S build because I couldn’t find a Tallboy and I think I have regrets. I do like to push myself on local trails with roots, small and drops. I wonder if I would be pedaling as much with a Tallboy or be faster than my 5010. Also thought about just putting Reserves on the 5010 to maybe get more out of it instead of selling for a loss to get a Tallboy C S build. Any input?
havent ridden a 5010 but I have owned a tallboy for three years now since the new suspension design and I love it so much, the best bike for a all round main trail bike imo
I even used to race cross country and enduro both on that bike!

I Had a prévious version of thé tallboy …now I havé à 5010 3…I like a snappy Bike but I regret The climbing abilties of thé tallboy 3…I wonder if thé New TB could be a better Bike for long days in thé saddle in Belgium with lot of variéty of trails?
I got the black 2021 TB this time last year and love it for exactly what you are considering getting one for. If you said to me back then wait until December 2023 for a TB with a glove box I'd laugh at you but its something you seriously need to consider.
@@hollakeef thanks hollakeef…I’ll be waiting but prices get more and more high..there is one 2020 purple xo1 Medium with reserve available in a shop with 30% less ..It’s very tempting !!
