- EA Sports WRC finally got official VR support in a patch earlier today, but it's not at all what I was hoping for, so in this video I'll discuss my thoughts on the VR implementation in EA WRC, while playing it on my Quest 3.

So, EA thinks they’re big and influential enough to just change computer science terminology that’s been in use for over half a century - “beta.” When I was a kid, EA and Activision were the PINNACLE of gaming that brought to mind nothing but positivity. Decades later, they’ve come to represent everything wrong with video games and the development/marketing...
I'm born in 1990, so I fully get what you're saying. I could not wait for the next EA game to drop. And the whole "Beta" thing is just confusing to me, like why not just call it a Beta internally if you really want to? Anyway thanks for watching!
Apple does this everytime they copy an idea 😂”thunderbolt”, “retina display” ,“spatial computing” 😂😂😂😂😂
@@filipivan5125 and double the price for stupid customers😀
The blurry issue is the upscaler. I messed around with it for a while and scoured forums. Once I turned the upscaler off completely it looks much better. Not perfect but much much better. Give that a shot.
The upscaler has been off from the first second I booted it up in VR. With it one, whether TAA or DLSS it looks 10 times worse even.
Confirm, it's blurry mess without any upscaler comparing to Dirt 2 or AMS2.
@@VRManCave According to the community (reddit and so on) the reason is deferred rendering, which most VR games don't use.
Can't wait for it to have a proper update... I wasn't sure if I just didn't set it up properly 😢 A real let down after dirt rally 2
Okay thanks for your help mate I will keep Watching your Vids
Thanks man I appreciate that! I try to reply to all my comments as much as humanly possible, so if you ever have questions, let me know!
You didn't say anything about your in-game upscaler settings. Those can definitely make it blurry looking. Also dynamic resolution.
Both upscaler and dynamic resolution are completely off in-game. You can see that in one of the recordings in the video. With the upscaler on it looks much much worse
It’s like they fixing the game for a half of year now, it looks like they can’t wait to abandone this one for the new edition
Yeah wouldn’t be surprised, but I’m still keeping hope alive that they’ll fix it!
Hi mate can you please tell me what car games play on your VR set please thanks Dylan
Yeah absolutely, I even have an older video on the channel about it, but basically the best implementations of VR for driving are Assetto Corsa(regular not Competizione), Automobilista 2 or Project Cars 2(both built on same engine) and iRacing is also fantastic, but expensive as it’s a subscription model. Honestly Automobilista 2 and Assetto Corsa could give you years of fun driving in VR and you won’t need anything else
I ended up with 1.5 supersample
no upscaler
half 45 fps forced spacewrap
it looks and drives well
Using oculus link
Just back home today so I’ll keep on trying to hopefully find a way to make it look half decent. Thanks for sharing your settings!
Thanks for that mate your the best thanks Dylan
Thank you too for watching Dylan, appreciate the support! ❤️
But what anti-aliasing settings are available? We haven't seen that menu. Ultra TAA can be super blurry, Medium or High is usually much better. If other AA methods are available they worth a try, AA off too even if it means editing an XML, and hopefully the game is not oversharpened flickerhell without it like F1, ACC or KartKraft. Also make sure you are not using any upscaling like DLSS and stuff.
The way it looks in VR very much reminds me of F1 unfortunately. I've tried every single AA option available and they all look terrible. The game looks so nice in flat mode, I can't imagine why it's so bad in VR.
@@VRManCave F1 has many horrible settings indeed, but the TAA without sharpening worked great, after you restarted the game because there is a bug you have to restart after every change to see how it really looks like:D I tried it on Virtual Desktop Godlike resolution, of course TAA will never be as sharp as old school anti-aliasing in AC or PCars2 or Dirt2, but it wasn't this horrible at all.
It actually looks pretty good with DLSS on Quality with Sharpness at 100, and increasing supersampling all the way up! Quite crisp and sharp for us
@@LunchAndVR I'm not a fan of DLSS in VR, even DLAA is too blurry. Of course supersampling can solve everything if your GPU don't mind upscaling to 10K, but well made games look great without supersamling:)
@@Nago15 That's true indeed, well made games don't need to be supersampled
did they change anything ? or is it still like this ?
None of the updates since have had any patch notes related to VR.
Which PC components do you use? RTX4090?
Yep I mentioned it in the video as well. I have an AMD 7950x3D CPU and 4090 GPU, coupled with 32GB of RAM.
ACC build on UE too and has the same problem. 1.6x resolution is an absolute minimum it looks real good at 1.85x
Yeah ACC is far from great too. This one at least performs well, but still far from how fantastic VR is in AC, AMS2 or iRacing.
the quality image from the mirror is tragic with or without vr. Where you find this game excellent ?
Wait, you guys even started in the car?
I booted up the game in VR and all it did, was rotate the camera around my car. (it looked very cursed, cuz a part of it was missing and it didn't have any wheels on)
After like 3 rotations the game closed itself x)
That was a bug probably. Try again and it should start fine!
motion compensation is bugged, you can turn it off in steamvr settings under openxr api layers
I tried it. Kept trying to find the correct settings to make it not so damn blurry. Couldn't. Closed it and just loaded up Dirt Rally 2 and played some Monaco. Unfortunate.
Yeah, same here, kept fiddling with settings both before and after making this video and couldn’t get it right. Dirt 2.0 is so much better.
@VRManCave I actually bought WRC recently to specifically play VR. BUT, with the bad implementation I refunded it back to steam. I'll give it ago in the future if they can get the VR back inline.
Interesting, I stick to DR2 for now, but I really hope they can improve this soon. Rally games need to be played in VR.
Did anybody get it working with Open XR? I possibly have a chance to something with this with eye tracked dfr on my pro and a 4090. I just can't believe how bad this is. I really don't think that a 5090 could even run this smoothly in this state.
On my 4090 it’s perfectly smooth on Ultra settings, but it just looks really bad. I did not see any option to select the runtime, but I did get an error that mentioned OpenVR at some point, so I’m guessing that’s what it’s using.
Answering my own question for those who are wondering. I got it working with OpenXR toolkit without crashing all the time but it still looks like crap even with eye tracked DFR and you can't use CAS upscaling which used to work/look really good in ACC for me. It's too bad because I really like this title and I can't race without VR anymore. VR is no help if you can't see more then a few feet in front of you.
saw that coming from a mile away
Ya can’t see jack s… a mile away in VR 😄 But yeah you’re right, dunno why I was hoping for more…
You can make it look sharp by disabling the upscaler but then even my 7900xt tanks in fps. Even on low settings it cant run my reverb g2 🤦♂️
Disabling the upscaler was the first thing I did. The framerate is stable at 90hz but it still looks terrible. With it on it's even worse.
Do you use supersampling?? I have quest 3. With 1.6 supersampling, lowest antialiasing and no upscaler it looks very good, Also, I use 0.85x0.85 fov tangent multiplier in oculus debug tool to save some preformance...
unfortunately AMD is not well optimized in VR. Before 4090 i was with 6800xt and it was a mess. Even the tracking dont work properly
@@martintop2605 I can max out dr2 without any issues. VR is working fine on AMD atm. Just not with this game. 🤷♂️
Does this work with praydos uevr injector mod?
It used to work with UEVR, but with the latest beta there are a few issues. However, if you set the settings right then the native VR is actually pretty good and sharp! No need for UEVR for this one IMO
@@LunchAndVR I was hoping the uevr may look better.
@@ivana6141 It already looks pretty good here with the RIGHT settings!
It does but the textures are kinda glitchy. It’s worse than the bad official VR implementation sadly.
What exactly are those settings? If everything on Ultra looks horrible, and I have supersampling on in the headset settings set to 1.3x, what can make it better?
Try turning AA down, upscaling also makes it super blurry
AA is down and upscaling completely off. I’ve tried all kinds of settings and it’s still terrible 😄
I tried it last night, I'm not sure if my settings were off but the game looked absolutely terrible and the fps were inconsistent even with a 4080, i think that's why they said its in Beta
Yeah it’s far from great in VR. The VR itself is not in Beta, they’re calling it VR Beta because it’s the first time an internal team developed it and not a third party.
The 'Basic Graphics' needs to be changed, not the advanced ones. Set AA on high or ultra, anistropic filtering to 16x and turn on DLSS to quality. I haven't fiddled with it a lot and still not like AC, but that made quite a difference. Probably going lower in advanced graphics like shadows, particles instead is probably improving the sharpness more. Ultra is often too fuzzy for VR.
I've tried everything. DLSS Quality looks absolutely unplayable. I've mixed and matched every setting I could think of and it's still worse than Dirt 2.0 on Low settings.
Dlss breaks the image mate😢
I agree with this video. My Quest 3 experience is disappointing. The blurriness outside the window is rough
Glad to hear that you agree, thanks for watching!
There will be shiny trees at the beginning, but after the adjustment, the picture is very beautiful. Q3 requires 120 frames.
4090
@@everyling6195 what adjustments?
@@proxlamuz4591 I originally thought it was similar to uevr. In fact, I was wrong. The effect was better than expected. I will take a look at what I set after get off work.
it's the video compression on the quest, I've played several driving games in VR and every quest I've ever tried looks like absolutely terrible when looking into the distance. Displayport connection to the headset made this an immensely better experience when I bought the HP Reverb G2.
Absolutely agree normally, but the implementation here is just bad. I've tried it on the Pimax Crystal as well and it's still terrible even over displayport. Also, almost every other racing game looks fantastic on the Quest 3, both wireless and wired.
@@VRManCave Okay fair play! Have you tried playing WRC with UVR mod? I wonder how the performance is in comparison, I feel like it was definitely better than the official but it's been a few months since I tried it
I will try it on bigscreen beyond with 4090 soon will see how it goes... also heard you say Unreal Engine 5... its UE4.. Vr can be very sensitive with things like anti aliasing and DLSS will need to check if they cause blurriness problems in some games i have to totally turn them off and just up the upscaling. Edit: Best i found out is to set foveated rendering to 0 it causes a lot of bluriness then set DLSS sharpness to 100 and rest of settings to high-low it gets me stable on bigscreen beyond at 3560x3560 75hz and looks okay.
Curious what your thoughts will be after trying it. Regarding UE, they were saying it’s gonna be UE5… did it end up actually being 4?
@@VRManCave They made it seem like it would be UE5 but i did some research into it which was hard to find and it looked to be just 4 but id have to look again to find a source. If it was 5 i think there would be more options that typically come with 5 like lumen tech etc.
@@VRManCave Honestly just tried it at 3560x3560 75hz with DLSS Quality setting with sharpness 76 and mostly high settings not ultra with car reflections ultra low it looks okay to me... The way it handles VR makes me suspicious what is your monitor resolution? myn is 4k maybe they made some noob mistakes and base it on monitor but who knows.
I haven't bought it yet because I was waiting for vr.
It’s currently 20 bucks on Steam. I’m still hoping they’ll fix the VR, fingers crossed!
So i have been consumed by GT7 in PSVR2 since release.. i used to love Rally games and the new WRC dropped on ps plus (obviously in 2D) i thought id give it a go and i couldn't believe how bad it looked and was sure the older wrc looked better on ps4.. and it does, what has EA done to this game in general not alone VR ??? 🤔
I love GT7 in VR!!! I think WRC looks decent in 2D, though I agree, somehow it didn’t give me those wow moments that Dirt 2.0 did. In VR it’s absolutely horrible though. I’m back from my vacation in a few days and I’ll keep trying to get it to look better, but my hopes are low.
@@VRManCave Which PC components do you use? RTX4090?
My pc runs vr games pretty ok and even in rally 2.0 it was really good but here in ea wrc i have like 3 fps on the LOWEST settings and its just unplayable😢
How do i start this game in vr ?
I explain that in the video, but basically, just click Play as normal, and if you have a VR headset connected, you'll see a dialog box that asks you if you wanna switch to VR mode.
@@VRManCave my headset vas not connected🙈… tnx and jeaa vr in wrc sucks and it is almost unplayable 😤😥
Yeah it's not at all what I was so excited and waiting for. Hopefully they keep working on it to make it better!
If you're telling me with Quest3 glasses that the game is blurry... I'm a bit afraid to try it on rift-s 😅
It's the game's fault, not the headset :))
Have a feeling big part of the problem is unreal engine and the way racing games use it. For me ACC is also very blurry in comparison to other games and when heard WRC will also use UE I feared it will look very blurry as well
Yeah UE definitely seems like a bad choice when it comes to VR. ACC absolutely is way blurrier than many other non-UE games, even with maxxed out settings on a 4090-powered PC.
Is this comming for psvr2 ?
Sadly do, it’s PCVR only with no plans for PSVR2, but seeing how it looks and runs, I don’t blame them.
Thanks
No motion blur?... Based!
It's already blurry all over, no need to add to it 😁
Sounds like my VR experiences with ACC. Guess it's an Unreal Engine sucks in VR thing?
ACC for me is not nearly as bad as this. Not sure what the issue is, cause there are tons of flat games that look fantastic in VR with UEVR, so it’s honestly shocking that a team of indie devs could make a solution that’s so much better than what a multi-billion dollar company was able to do.
It's Unreal Engine 4 btw, Ea cheaped out and didnt give us UE5 so they can use that as a sales gmmick in future editions.
Yeah they initially said it would be UE5 but ended up just using UE4.5.
VR mega quest 3 work on the ps5
This is unfortunately not coming to the console version of the game.
I don't think 120fps is going to work well knowing your pc has to compress all of that into 400mbps across you link cable. I think it is too many frames for that bandwith, I suspect you would have better results if you decrease to 90fps and increase that bandwith to at least 500. Note that if you copy paste a number there you can go higher than 500.
120fps at 400mbps works absolutely fine in every other game on max settings, and yes I generally go to 7-800mbps when I’m not recording.
Thanks for the heads up.. Its the same with the F1 games in VR, looks like absolute rubbish compared to Automobilista 2 wich is my go to VR sim 💪
Yeah absolutely, F1 is the same, super blurry even on max settings. Automobilista 2 and Assetto Corsa both look soooo much better.
EA WRC is on Unreal Engine 4. Not 5. Hopefully, they will transfer it to 5 at some point because it looks like the latest versions of the engine work much better and provide much better fps, not to mention the graphics fidelity it can accommodate without so much performance hit.
it will stay on ue4 you cant easily just "transfer" it
@@Eskoxo I meant transfer as when they develop a new game, maybe in 2025 or so. It is not so straightforward but it is the only way forward in the future.
@@sevenunimag hopefully they go back and improve their ego engine, no version of the unreal engine. even 5. is good for racing or vr. certainly not both combined.
They were saying initially it’s gonna be UE5, so I assumed they kept it on that. Regardless, even if it’s UE4, it’s still unacceptable for an older game like Dirt 2.0 to work so much better in VR.
@@VRManCave no one said it's gonna be UE5, no one officially at least and especially not the devs.
I use Quest 3 with a virtual desktop, single eye 70%, 120 frames, turn off the FPSVR graphics to high quality, high shadows, turn off the fog, low crowds, high tracks, and high textures. The game screen will still jitter and jump slightly when I turn my head. This is necessary. Playing with your eyes straight ahead will not cause discomfort.
But when I use PICO 4, I get 90 frames and my head turns smoothly without any jitter, which is really amazing.
Tried it on Quest 3, Quest 2, Pico 4 and Pimax Crystal. It still looks extremely blurry compared to any other sim racing game on the same settings.
@@VRManCave Will the screen shake when turning the head on Quest 3?
Strangely Im getting much worse performance on Pico 4 vs Quest 3 on a 4090. With the Quest 3 I can max it out and supersample but Pico struggles to go past medium settings
that's because of steamvr, use oculus link (air or cable) for now
We all knew it would be disappointing, but wanted to be suprised....
Very well said! I’m still somehow hoping they’ll fix it at some point. I believe Dirt 2.0 in VR was initially bad too, so who knows…
@@VRManCaveI'm sorry but your settings are wrong that's why it's blur. You're supposed to increase your supersampling, minimum 1.5x and above!
@@LunchAndVR The SS is at 1.3x, and saying the settings are wrong is wrong. I shouldn't have to run my headset at 1.5x resolution to get a decent image while using a 4090 on Ultra Settings, that's just ridiculous.
@@VRManCave You have right and wrong points there, you're right as in the game defo shouldn't have to resort to us increasing SS. But you're incorrect as in your SS should be increased through Pixel Per Density in debug tool, not the default 1.3
hey youre proberly not going to see this ManCave but id like to see you play Warplanes Air Corp
Of course I see it, I read and try to respond to every single comment I get. You guys are what makes me doing this worth it and possible, so I'd be ashamed to not acknowledge that. I will look into Warplanes Air Corp. I've played the older Warplanes one and even have a video on the channel about it though.
@@VRManCave yeah i saw it and it was a great video its the reason i bought the game btw sorry for bad grammer english is not my first language
get motion sickness by watching this video. :D i love WRC... but not the VR for now :D Thx for yr vid
Aww sorry to hear that. Just curious though, what device were you watching this one? Like a small screen or big?
@@VRManCave Play it on my 65inch LG oled 😅😁
WRC is UE4, not UE5 ;)
Indeed my bad. They kept saying UE5 before launch but I guess they went with UE4 in the end.
@@VRManCave no harm done and good video, it's a blurry mess, low resolution and likely a forward rendered method
So just like f1 22/23 one big blurrfest
Mmmyup... sadly.
Yeeh, this games deserve more caution... But I'm suspect that EA and code will abandone this title...
I don’t think they’ll abandon it, as they do keep adding updates, but unfortunately none of them address the VR issues.
yeah, this is unplayable for most of us. i dont know why they even bothered. i guess now they can say they didnt lie and it does have vr? i dont know.
for anyone that has tried the unreal engine vr plugin, how did that compare to the official vr? i heard good things about the former when it released, and i am only hearing bad things about the latter.
it would be fascinating if a simple on off toggle to implement unreal engines built in vr works better than 8 months of official vr development time...
I tried UEVR a few months ago. It’s okay but textures are glitchy inside the car which is very distracting. Also the lighting seems a bit off somehow. The official implementation, while very bad, is still better than UEVR for this particular game.
@@VRManCave good to hear I suppose, thanks
I wonder where the VR guy did go when EA bought Codemasters. He was clearly not part of the deal because F1 and now this doesn’t even come close to the Dirt Rally VR experience
They actually did explain that they used a third party, external team to build the VR for Dirt 2.0, I show the snippet in the video as well. So the “guy” didn’t go anywhere, they just decided to do it using an internal team that had never played a sim racing title in VR in their whole life 😅
Seems like both F1 and WRC VR support are disappointed.... oh well... UEVR it is then...
Yeah.. sadly. I did try UEVR a few months ago with WRC but wasn’t really impressed. I probably should do more tweaking as I know for a fact that UEVR games can look amazing.
Both this and Forza Motorsport were clearly not ready to be released. Both games need more time for development but both EA and Turn 10 are greedy so it makes sense why both games are in the state they are in.
Could not agree more. It's sad that more and more companies are releasing unfinished games or features.
Common even my cats know that with this graphics engine u can't expect anything.
Yeah I just love being stupidly optimistic and get my hopes up. Your cats sound smarter than me 😄
CONFIRMED FIX FOR BLURRINESS: change/increase your "per eye resolution" in the steam VR settings under "advanced settings." and also under "video" in the advanced settings, try to enable "super sample filtering" let me know if it works for you.
This if you're in steam vr^ And also increase supersampling makes it a lot sharper!
On Oculus headsets it doesn’t use SteamVR at all, so tweaking those settings does nothing. Probably works if you’re on a Valve Index or other native SteamVR headset. On my Quest 3 I do have 1.3x supersampling on, as well as increased bitrate via Link. Every other game looks great with these settings, so it’s WRC, not my headset settings.
@@VRManCave No my dude... For Quest 3 (which I am also using), increase Supersampling in Oculus Debug tool (It's called Pixel Per Density) which is Much much higher that you need to be at, you're too low
Supersample filtering only applies after 220% steam vr slider and if you do hit that, filter actually down samples, so leave that off.
The issue is purely how this is rendering, it's just terrible VR implementation. All other Sims (apart from ACC) use forward render.
This clearly doesn't as everyone is mentioning this crappy visuals.
It won't get fixed, it can't because that's how deferred rendering is
So I’m using an Oculus CV1, I have my SteamVR settings set to run Oculus as my default openXR, (or maybe openXR as oculus is better said.) I don’t know if the Quest2-3 will work the same way with steamVR as I have my meta account/app working with steam, but maybe someone can confirm that it does/doesn’t?
You have to SS to at least 1.5 (better 200%) to get it look good, but then performance drops. Same shit as with F1 23. I managed to get F1 23 run decently and look good on G2/4070TI Super combo after A LOT of thinkering but had to lock frames to 60 FPS on a headset and ingame settings or it's a blurry stuttering unplayable mess. Shame on you codemasters and EA.
I have the SS set to 1.3, 120hz and 700mbps bitrate. Tried everything I could with this one as well as F1 23 but neither looks even half as good as AMS2 or AC.
@@VRManCave DLSS and FSR are broken in F1 23. You have to lower some grx settings and SS to 1.5x minimal, 2x is even better. Then game looks good, but you won't hit locked 90hz. Well maybe if you have 4090. I can reach only locked 60hz with 4070TI Super at 1.5x SS on G2
As I see in comments many of you are blind or just didn't play WRC in VR. It's blurry with or without AA, upscalers. No compare to 4 years old Dirt 2 or AMS2
Yup, my thoughts as well. AMS2, Assetto Corsa, Dirt 2.0 or iRacing all look miles better in VR.
I'm never buying an EA game again. They full on advertised VR support of this game in trailers and the game description but than make us wait half a year for it to actually get added to the game, and it's not even close to being good. Everything EA touches turns to shit.
Why would they use an internal team to make the VR version? When it took that long for it to be released youd expect it to look at least decent. So they took longer for it to look like 💩. Game looks worse than on my Series S on a 1080p, 10+ year old TV😂
I genuinely don’t know man… I had my hopes up exactly because they were using an internal team which I was hoping meant more control, better QA testing, etc. but.. nope 🤣
do you have 'locked to horizon' set on or off? the car is barely moving here. it doesnt look right, it should be bouncing over bumps, compressing suspension around corner, going up and down for hills etc.
if its not a setting then this game looks boring. dirt rally 2.0, even if less realistic, is pretty fun, and the vr actually works. i wish codemasters never acquired the wrc licence. i wish ea never bought codemasters. what a disaster. EA strikes again.
Locked Horizon is off, and the car is moving a lot but it’s looking to me like the VR preview window has a bit of stabilization, which I can’t say I mind as a content creator since the Dirt 2.0 preview is way worse, though the actual in-game VR experience is so much better in Dirt.
@@VRManCave ah, ok. Thanks
one thing, UEVR.
Tried it way before this official patch came out. It's glitchy and does not look good at all in this particular game. Other games look awesome with UEVR, but not EA WRC.
EA WRC looks like a PS2 game at all times, irrespective of VR mode
Anyone who saw back when EA bought out codemasters and said this game would still be good cause they’re letting codies develop it still, are probably eating those words now… what a disgrace. Codies you guys could’ve just gave us a DR3 and made more money from the success of that game than EA bought you out for.. and I hope you all are realizing this now and will speak up so other future devs don’t make the same mistake.
You have no clue, this game doesn't run on UE5!
The devs and all the interviews kept saying it was gonna be UE5 before launch. Apparently indeed they ended up actually using UE4, which I found out after making this video. My bad dude, no need to be aggressive 😅
@@VRManCave proof?
Even RaceRoom from 2013 looks better. Unreal engine is the wrong game engine for raceing games. And this cross platform thing s.... nowadays
Yeah totally! Sadly VR still seems like an afterthought for many devs.
You need look no further than the VR on offer in F122 and F123. Shite in F122 and still shite in F123. EA/Codemasters are just shite.
Yeah you’re right, I was just hoping for more here since Dirt 2.0 is great in VR.
I knew it was gonna be bad just look at f1 vr it's so bad
I know yeah.. my hopes were high for this one since they were working on it internally as opposed to using third parties, but yeah it’s just as bad as F1.
4090 here … looks like a bad PSVR 1 game. Honestly worse than DR1 on PS4/VR and that’s saying something
Yup, could not agree more. I’ve seen Quest 2 games with better visuals 😅
@@VRManCave I’m somewhat optimistic that this entire game is a beta and they will eventually
, assuming they’re still there
, move everything to UE5 for all of the future EA racing titles.
unreal engine is the wrong choice for simracing, there is not one game that works would we would expect and its promised
It’s unreal 4 not 5, 5 no worky good for broom broom
Glad i didn't buy the game. This was so expected with unreal engine 🥲
The game is great flat, but I really wanted to play it in VR. It may just be my stupid optimism, but I still hope they’ll fix it. The game is currently on a heavy discount as well on Steam, so fingers crossed the VR will improve.
I bought this last steam sale only because the vr version was coming.
