      Hi Tommy, thank you!!! And most importantly, enjoy your new Z9. I really love it, the video side is a game changer for me. I am not sure which camera you are coming from, but give the z9 a little time before you decide if you like it. I was coming from D6 and D850 and I found it to have a little bit of a learning curve with the autofocus. But, once you get your groove with it and know what the camera can do, you will really enjoy it. Now to your question. What I do is turn on auto ISO using AF-F focus. In menu g11 zebra pattern, the manual still says g9 which needs to be updated after firmware. I turn Highlight Threshold to 255. If 255 is selected, the display will show only areas that are potentially overexposed. So with auto iso on, if I see any zebra on the subject that I am filming, I will go negative on exposure compensation until I see the zebras are gone and vice versa, if it looks to dark, I will go plus on exposure comp until I see zebras and then back off. and now with mirrorless, looking through the viewfinder I get what I see. I like auto iso, because I with birds they fly into varying lights and this puts me in the ballpark. If you have any other question, please let me know. Thanks.

    Hi, Awesome video and content. I have a question though ?can you tell me what is the Autofocus technique that you are using while capturing osprey , especially when diving in the water and getting up with a catch. It would be great if you could let us know the focus mode that you are using , if any combination of two (like 3d + wide area) or single shot.
    I am getting a lot of shot where the camera is going in the background and not coming back or tracking the bird reliably.

    • @PeanutChuAdventures

      Hi Tryambak, thank you!!!. Yes, I find wide-L with animal subject detection works best for me with action and birds in flight. For birds that are still or low movement, I may use wide-s, or single depending on the situation. For video, I am using AF-F, AFC in shooting mode. Yes, sometimes when I don’t get a focus lock on the bird(could be background or something else), I will quickly and repletely press and release the focus button(I setup back button) until I get the white focus lock on the bird. I hope this helps. I actually made a video showing this a few months back. Its at the 16:00 mark on this video: Get started making videos of birds in flight using the Nikon Z9. @@PeanutChuAdventures Thanks for your quick response. This is helpful. And yes , I also find myself repeatedly press and release to reacquire the focus. Sometimes manually pull back the focus with focus ring. I am using 600E F4 btw with ftz2.
      However , since we are on the topic , I wanted to discuss one more situation/use case. It is about the birds just launching from perch. I tried for both small (song birds) and large birds (of prey) . My Issue , is even If I am focused on Wide-L with eye AF fixed on the eye , when the bird launches itself from the perch , it does not follow the bird immediately. It always stays or retains focus on the perch. There seems to be a lag. I tried 'Erratic' with +5 sensitivity also. It help in tracking after it launched and started flying. But that moment of launch when it opens its wings and starts to fly , the camera always seems to focus on the perch or legs instead of eyes :( . Tried with 3D as-well. I know with 3D , sensitivity is default to 3 . Still , I am not able to get that action shot with an eagle opening its wings and launch from the perch.
      Let me know if you also faced the situation or you could share your thoughts on a possible solution

      @@wildanglez8847 , Yes, that initial leap off, since its happens quickly, the focus sometimes is left behind. My suggestion and I am sure you did it. As soon as the leap off, I try to pan as smooth as can to try to keep in the wide-L box around the bird. If I pull it to too fast, then it seems to lose focus easier.
      With small birds this is much more difficult.
      Also, as a suggestion, maybe move back away from the subject a little, giving you more room so you have a little more time to react. Only a suggestion. Its not easy. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    I have a lot of questions on the post side / file management side. You shot all this footage at 4k/120? im guessing 400 or so shutter speed? also im assuming you are using divinci at some point to process or edit the files? what setting do you use for your edits? 24fps? 30fps? I'm asking all of this bc I cant quite wrap my head around set up and best quality. I feel like if you shoot at 4k120 then import at (lets say HD 24fps) then edit, resize, push in and so forth - that you are taking hires footage then downgrading it then trying to upres everything. Ha sorry if this sounds uninformed .... but it is! thank for the great content love the videos!

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jason, thank you for your kind words and for subscribing.
      Ok, here is what I do to shoot and in post. I know this frame rate subject in the software is confusing.
      1) I shoot everything in 4k120 so I can get the best slow motion.
      2) I was editing on a MacBook pro from 2017, but it was taking way to long to render any changes. I upgraded to a mac studio and it works great. When I would make a change to a clip, before was taking about 5min for example, now it takes about 15 seconds.
      3) Shutter = usually 2x frame rate, so that's 250 most of the time, or sometimes I will go up to 320 if I want it a little sharper, or if its really bright out, to darken go to 400max. Like yesterday I was filming baby egrets and the sun got bright, I wanted to darken the whites a little more without having to change aperture.
      4) I use final cut pro x. Ok, here I will setup my project at 4k, and use frame rate of 60. I find this to provides the sharpest and smoothest for me. I have tried 30 frame rate. But find 60 frames to be the best for me. Then, I will slow down the footage to 25%, for me this renders nice and smooth
      5) This video provides the best technical explanation on frame rate.
      th-cam.com/video/rMzDT5y381I/w-d-xo.html&t=
      7) Also, If you are interested, I did a video on how I create a video, there I show how I create a video in final cut but I did not show the frame rate, because it defaults for me to 60 and the subject itself is confusing on a video.
      Hope that helps, let me know if that does helps.

    • @jasoncannon
      @jasoncannon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man thanks for that link! So helpful. Still curious about how to mix 120 and 240 footage into a 30 fps timeline. Just the workflow that isn’t destructive in quality- I feel like changing frame rates from 120 to 30 and then back to 120 for slowmo portion degrades the footage. Thanks again for that link. Really really helpful

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jason Cannon its truly confusing how the editing software handles it. Should be able just to match the frame rate from camera to software and if I want to slow down, I just slow it down. And if I want better slo mo, I just shoot more fps . That would be simple. I did trial and error to see what works best with the options that I have. Let me know how it goes. I watched other youtube videos on the subject, but most are doing cinematic, people, etc where fast movement is not the focus. I agree about the destructive nature and it seems like you will lose frames, but maybe when you have so many frames this will make it not noticeable? I just started shooting 4k120 when I got the z9 in January and had the exact same questions. Before that, the D6 would only do 4k/30 or 2k/60, and tracking was horrible. Thanks and let me know if you find anything out on this.

    • @PeanutChuAdventures
      @PeanutChuAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi uriavitan,
      Thank you!
      Question, which camera are you using?
      I find the 600mm and 800 having the similar sharpness. And autofocus having the same speed.
      Me personally, I used the 800mm 90% of the time, because my subjects where at that distance. Both lens are excellent. If I was going somewhere where my subjects were closer or I needed to go down a stop of light then I would use the 600mm. Also, dont rely on that you can put a TC on the 600 to get to 840 because the AF takes a hit with birds in flight or action. Stationary subjects would be ok.

Now something to think about, if you plan to go to the z9. I like using the z lens with the z9. I find the AF is faster than the adapted lens especially with birds flying towards you.
      Hope this helps and let me know how it goes.

      @@PeanutChuAdventures Thanks very much Peanut! I'm always learning and like studying your work. Your video was very steady so I was just wondering how you were shooting it. I also rely 100% on a tripod for video work except when shooting garden bugs. @@garfieldirwin Gary, thank you! Wow, you don't hear many people switching from A1, if you don't mind me asking, why? are you not enjoying the A1? Are you going to get lenses also?

    • @garfieldirwin
      @garfieldirwin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeanutChuAdventures Well the A1 is certainly an excellent camera, arguably superior to the Z9 for stills shooting, but when it comes to video IQ the Z9 is the better camera. What I like about the Z9 is that it offers 4k60p in oversampled HQ whereas the A1 bins all 4k modes (i.e. does not offer oversampling or internal raw recording). The A1 does a high quality 8k but only @30p. The other thing the Z9 offers is a 2.3x crop in DX mode up to 4k120 -- the A1 can only do 4k60p in DX. That said, the A1 does offer a sub HD 240p which is nice for some things -- I really wish the Z9 supported 240p, even in HD. I'm also getting a strong sense that although the A1 doesn't offer animal eye-AF in video, it still has superior video AF -- it's not user selectable but seems almost "intuitive" and can track flying birds BEHIND obstructions in real time -- something that the Z9 is simply incapable of doing. For instance on the Z9 with bird eye-AF on, as soon as the bird turns it's head such that the eye's are not visible, the camera jumps to the next best thing which could be anything, whereas the A1 seems to "know" to stay with the main subject even though it has no eye-AF.
      As a video-centric shooter I rely on zooms for almost everything and the Sony 200-600 is an absolutely stellar lens -- I used it all the time with the 2x TC, but I'm sure Nikons will be just a good when it's released. As a video wildlife shooter I rely exclusively on zooms, but I am interested in Nikons 800pf for extreme reach when shooting 4k120p in 2.3x DX crop.

I'm still having a little bit of an issue with my Z9 moving in and out of focus at strange times while filming Green Herons. It seems when the subject has distance behind it to the background the af sticks really well and gets initial af fast. If its in a cluttered background, sometime I find it harder to acquire the initial AF lock. How I get around this, is to pre focus to something near to the subject and then hit the focus button on the subject. This seems to work most of the time. I have also, used the manual focus ring using the focus peaking, then hit my focus button when I see the red and that worked ok doing some macro style flying subjects. @@PeanutChuAdventures Thanks for the reply! Always great to hear back from you. I appreciate that feedback and actually watching Scotts video originally made me think about bringing up the question because he was talking about the lens having a hard time focusing from far, back to close subjects. Hopefully the firmware updates will allow the old F mount glass to have these cool features. I'll be making a new video probably when I get my Z9. I ordered in early April, so it may be a little while until I have the camera in hand, but I'll continue to check out your channel as always!

      Yes, that would be great idea. What I do, and it's become a natural move now if I can't get an immediate focus, is to focus near the subject quickly to pre focus. It may be a tree that the bird is on or if its action I will hit the ground near the subject. I find shooting to be better than video with this issue. But, even with this issue, that camera from both ends shooting and video is very fun to use. And the video side from me has a been a game changer coming from DSLR, AFF works really well. I have been doing 90% video, mainly because its just exciting to use now. I had the D6 prior and I prefer the z9 autofocus. I would say, that you are going to love it. Let me know when you get it, and I look forward to seeing your videos

      Hi, this was uploaded at 4k120. Are you noticing an issue? This video is strange, sometimes on youtube when I watched, I do notice some shakiness, then other times I dont see it.
