The #1 curse also has to do with the fact that Tony Renna was killed in a horrific accident at Indy in October 2003 while testing Dixon's #1 car. Apparently the crash was so bad that it's rumored that if it happened during the 500 the race would no longer exist.
His crash happened right were I sit on raceday in turn 3 I remember seeing him race at the 500 earlier that season I was 10 years old in 2003 and that was my 2nd 500 I think he finished 7th I believe that year probably a good thing there is no video or images of his crash
Yeah, Renna clipped the grass, spun backwards and the car became airborne and went high enough to go over the catch fence and into the stands. The only thing about Renna's accident that is comforting is that his death was instant, he and his car were pretty much completely obliterated. It was a tire test for what was pretty much a brand new chassis and body, revisions were made to the car to prevent it from getting so much lift from a backwards spin. If it happened during a race weekend, it would have probably been the worst disaster in auto racing since the 1955 LeMans 24 hours, when a Mercedes Benz went into the stands killing 55 people and the driver. Something like that could very well could have ended the 500 and even if it didn't, it would have forced changes that would have changed the race forever.
@@chrish931 Just to note, Levegh's 55 Le Mans crash claimed 80+ lives, not 55. Some tried to say 78, but most say 83 , but the way in which they determined deaths from the accident back then are not as today (ie if you die within 30 days of an accident, or as a result of any additional complications post accident that are only even an issue BECAUSE of the accident... you die from the accident.... back then, they did not count it this way)...so some cite the highest estimates are higher than that even.
I’m sure you’re kidding about “angering the racing gods,” but the biggest reason Ganassi doesn’t run the #1 is out of respect for Tony Renna. He died in a practice crash using Scott’s car, so it’s more to do with honour than superstition. That said, I do still think his bad season in 2004 had something to do with it.
