My favourite cover of this song. PTX were superb, but for me HF had more heart & Chance holding the Bass throughout 🥰🥰🥰

I love PTX, but Home Free does something different for me. They're just as talented as PTX, but somehow they make their personalities shine through more. That's what I love about them. They are down to earth. And nowadays that quality is hard to find. They're inviting to their fans, which is special.

    • @williemcd
      @williemcd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Probably the best song for comparing the two groups....I started out long as dedicated to PTX... Until I encountered HF. What stands out for me, in this song and the comparison, is the 2nd verse/stanza or what ever....PTX sounded chaotic....while HF was melodic....

PTX sang it great, but HF put feeling into it, so they didn’t just sing it.

I was going to say the same thing…every time you replayed the section, Jeremy, all I heard was Austin on the high notes (maybe with some vibrato?)

Mark Lowry wrote this song and it brings me to tears whenever I hear it. He and Voctave did a superb version of it also. Mark is also a Christian comedian. He said there were other questions he had for Mary but they didn't rhyme. lol Thanks for the reaction.

Love this Home Free version and really enjoy PTX’s as well (although it gets overplayed on the radio this time of year) but for me the Voctave version feat. Mark Lowry is the best because no one can interpret the lyrics like the one who wrote them. (I love this modern Christmas Hymn, so listen to them all regardless.)

I think you were hearing Austin on the high notes, maybe with some vibrato, or two notes colliding. I love their arrangement of this song as it keeps the message in perspective. No vocal acrobatics and crazy beatbox sounds. And the setting is appropriate. Thank you for not always knowing a song. It gives you room for growth (like I try with some of the metal songs!). Looking forward to hearing the last FrYday song for this year.

The lyrics come from a church musical Mark Lowry wrote as though he were sitting down and having a conversation with Mary about what/who her son was/is to become. The lyrics are very powerful to Christians, especially the words "THE GREAT I AM."

Jillian, you wouldn’t know this from your childhood in the church-it came out somewhere around 1990-1995. I didn’t hear the nomonica in this one but I don’t have cool headphones like Jeremy. The little sounds you pointed out were, I think, imitating a baby’s cry. Newborns (at least mine) give a little fussy cry like that before going into a full on cry-kind of a warning to fix whatever is wrong before all hell breaks loose! Thanks, y’all!

It’s fun to hear the beatboxing sounds from Adam. His modern interpretation of sounds may help crossover to some audiences that otherwise wouldn’t listen to this song. It’s been done well by a lot of folks. I first remember a duet of Kenny Rogers and Winona Judd doing this song. Next was Pentatonix, which was great, and then a Voctave version with a feature of Mark Lowery. Mark was the original lyricist of this song and the Voctave version with Mark is truly special. I’d recommend that you check them all out. Have a Happy New Year!

Don't think that was a harmonica, I heard a high-pitched descant-like vocal. ??? This arrangement does, indeed, include more beatboxing than most Christmas numbers. Love you both -- will probably miss the rest of Home Fry Friday because I'm hitting the road to my brother's house for the weekend. I hope your 2023 is ending on a high note, and that the New Year will bring new joys.

This is so beautiful. How it all starts with all the amazing voices that blend so well. Every time one has the lead, the rest sing around it so beautifully and then build it up with so many layers is awesome. Sung with so much emotion. All supported by the incredible beatboxing and bass. It really hits you with the wonderful ending, the star of Bethlehem. What a cool arrangement. Here too they have taken it to another level.

My favourite rendition of this song. Of course the singing, harmonies & beatboxing are terrific (they always are). The crescendos give me chills every time! The final "Mary Did You Know" in Tim's bass adds a whole different meaning to the line. Happy New Year.

Hey, Jillian. I was raised 100% Catholic (not a very good Catholic - lol), and I still didn't recognize this song right off the bat either, so don't feel bad. And I think I'm older than y'all. So it's not an age thing necessarily. I think it's just one of those songs that either you've heard or not. Jeremy - thanks for recognizing Rupp in this! Not many reactors notice his part. Sometimes Austin does the high harmonica and/or guitar sounds. Sometimes Chance does the lower, twang guitar sounds. But I think (I think - don't quote me on it) that Adam Rupp is the one making all the sounds on this. Other fries will correct me if I'm wrong.

I too was raised Catholic. This is not a song we sung, or learned. I believe it's because it's a modern song. Someone said the writer did a collab with Voiceplay on this song.

  • @joywright8794

I did hear it the second time it was replayed, but it was faint. I loved the laser sounds in the section that began with "The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again" This song is one of my favorite newer Christmas songs. The song was first released in 1991 when Mark Lowery took a poem he had written years before and asked a fellow member of the Gaither Vocal Band if he could put it to music. The poem that Mark wrote was imagined as an interview with Mary, the mother of Jesus, at his birth. Did she have any for-knowledge of what her baby was to experience on His mission in life? What immediately struck me in this song was that I had never considered this story from a mother's point of view. Yes, the Angel explained what God was doing, but the idea of a mother living through watching her child's challenges and eventual death on the Cross . . .well, it made the whole thing more personal and less of a compelling story someone just shared when I was a child. I had been a Christian for many years, but the godhood of Jesus was the majority of my view. This story fleshed out the humanity of Jesus in a very impactful way. Yes, he was the son of God, but he lived a very human life, felt the joy's, victories, temptations, sorrows, and pain like any other human ever born. The complete picture of the cost of His sacrifice became crystal clear to me. It was an awakening to the true treasure I had spent way too long taking for granted and added a mature incite to the love of God and the cost of my salvation. Like I said, this song is so very precious to me because it illuminated that His sacrifice was a choice and it was give to me in the true spirit of Agape love. The Greek term for the love that is given freely with no expectation of gaining a reward, the way God loves us.

I am a Home Fry but I found some of the beat box noises in this song a bit off-putting. It sounds like pigs snorting-just weird. Other than that, it was beautiful and simple-not showy like some singers do(diva-ish, if you know what I mean).
