I'm a small town Texas boy. 75 now and was living in Austin area. Two years ago my wife passed. I was just lost rattling around in our home. Home Free came out with this one. After a week or so of listening to this I finally knew I wanted to go home. One acre of land. 1/4 mile of dirt road to my home. Large hobby/workshop. Grand children 10 miles away. It's my heaven for now, until I get called home.
With Chance in the mix, they can fool you. You think you hear the bass line so it must be Tim but in reality, it is Chance and Tim's voice is floating somewhere up high with Austin or even higher. Chance and Tim can literally pass the bassline between them in live shows and there is barely any difference sound wise. And also (not that they did this here) but if you're not hearing percussion in a section and you hear a high note...it could be Rupp. Many people forget he can sing and will jump back and forth between percussion and harmony. Not a lot but it does happen. I mean in their version of "Listen to the Music" you can hear a high floating almost piercing tone. And many think it is Austin. But if you watch Rupp closely later on (during the breakdown) you can see he is the one making that almost eerie, high sound. You really never know with these guys what you will hear and it is a fun game of "Who did that?" LOL
You're entirely correct! It could easily be Adam if he's not doing percussion. I have no idea what interview I watched or when, but something was asked about who takes over some of the high harmonies when Austin or Rob is covering lead vocals. Tim said that a lot of the time, it's him up in the rafters. Every one of these men have crazy ranges that give them options that most groups don't have. It's often a guessing game of "What are they up to now? And who's doing which part today." And we are the lucky ones on the receiving end of their ingenuity! ❤
Responding to your comments about who takes the lead. When you have 5 excellent singers who don't pull egos and they decide amongst themselves who would best suit the lead of course it will be great. Even as early as "The Sing-Off" they refused to pull Rob from the lead as the judges had pushed them to consider.
Absolutely my favorite HF song and this arrangement is the best. They all just took this to another level. I love Rob leads. He has such a versatile voice. They are all amazing. Thanks for finally getting to this song! Always enjoy your reactions.
I grew up listening to John Denver's songs. Hundreds of artists have covered this song. But I feel Home Free took this one to another level for me. It is one of my favorite covers of this song. I love everything about it. It is a masterpiece. Home Free is my favorite a cappella group hands down.
The Home Free guys worked for years to make sure they did justice to this John Denver classic. Surely John would be proud of this result. As usual the care HF puts into their video shines through. Thanks for your reactions.
The higher voices you heard in the beginning were Austin and Adam. There was no beatboxing at that time. And you’re right about how soulful it is. I also feel a sense of yearning for home. I have felt that this week being with our son and grandkids. Florida is a dangerous place to live (even though we got no damage from the storm). My mission today is to go through our clothes and get it better organized. Happy Home FrYday everyone! 🎶 Cyd
The arrangement of this song was absolutely perfect for them! Definitely a masterpiece! A lot of folks have covered it but in my opinion it’s musicality, leaving the great song that it is alone, and putting the Home Free spin on it and then opening it up at the end and taking us to church! Great job guys! This is a good one! Low bass Kenneth
Auatin has always been my favorite, but Rob comes a close second. Both of them are very good singers and are so versatile. I think this arrangement along with "Stand By Me" are two of their best. Huge fan of Austin and looking forward to his single work.
I've always loved the late John Denver's music & I think he would have approved of their rendition. Rob is the perfect lead for this and the harmonies & beatboxing are incomparable. They're all vocal chameleons - Tim & Chance, Austin & Rob trade off all the time and it's so smoothly done you can't even tell. Similarly, they all can beatbox to an extent.
I've been waiting for y'all to do this one. My understanding is it took them 5yrs to get it "just right". John's version was like he was in a hurry to get home. This version is a little melancholy, like they're homesick.
John Denver's version is obviously the classic. Chance's version with Peter Hollens is lovely and has a modern feel. But Home Free's version is still my family's favorite--hands down! Besides the unbelievable harmonies, getting to hear Adam Rupp's sweet tenor actually singing is such a great treat ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ #HomeFree #AdamRuppSinging
It's WVU's school song for football games, too. A whole stadium singing every word. I miss those day. BTW I am a WVU alumnus, so I really do love this song. Plus my dad had John Denver on 8-track lol
It’s my favorite version of the song. I understand that HF took years to get the arrangement just right for this iconic song. Love it! I love all of them. Good one guys!
When I don't listen to Home Free for a while, I LOVE how they can take my breath away as I get re-introduced to the beautiful harmonies and complex arrangements. Great reaction!
Hello I and J! Happy Home Friday! You know you're a true Home Fry when you have trouble picking a favorite. It's like picking a favorite child. I love them all equally, in different ways.
This song is so beautiful. They did more than justice to the original. They always put their own twist on it. Love these guys so very much. In my opinion they will never be the same without Austin. I know why Austin left and that is okay, but who they got to replace him is another story. You might want to look at the new guy's Bio and see who he really is. This is just my opinion. Love your reactions!
I assume that “see who he really is” comment is referring to the fact that he is gay? So what? Your comment says volumes more about your character than his.
@janelleG-k8e: We didn’t make that connection to Anita’s comment at all, and assumed she meant his musical bio. We are a loving, supportive group here Janelle. None of the Fries on THIS channel would ever disrespect like that. Come on now.
It could be that one of the high voices you heard in the opening section of pure harmony before the beat dropped in was Adam Rupp, who was singing at that point. And I wouldn't be surprised if they layered Rob in the harmonies later over his solos.
Tim did the high harmony part. You can find that in a few songs. Either when Austin sang lead and they needed a high harmony above Austin, or when the harmony was exactly around Robs bridge or here with Rob is doing lead. I really prefer this slower tempo for this song, and of course this version as a whole is just beautiful
It sounds weird to say that the BASS is singing the high harmony, but it is true. They have said it often. Now I need to go find a decent fan video and see who is "when".
I just saw them in concert 3 weeks ago and they have a looping machine that they now use and they do loop their voices for the layering effects with the more difficult songs with sounds & harmonies. STILL, simply amazing. If you ever get the chance to see them in concert…..GO. The new guy, whose name is Adam, is fitting in great and is coming into his own element replacing Austin. Again, love watching you guys!
I love each of them as leads, BUT- Rob has a special place in my heart as he is a vocal chameleon. We have pop Rob, Gospel Rob, R&B Rob, Angelic Rob, and, of course, Opera Rob. I don’t remember if you’ve reacted to this one, so I’m suggesting Home Free at the Hosanna concert 2013 singing their rendition of the carol “Joy To the World”- Rob lead, and boy, he cuts loose! It’s a funky, jazzy rendition, complete with a beatbox breakdown! It’s one of my HF favorites. This John Denver rendition is a HF masterpiece. Now, I have to mention Chance. He is such an emotive singer- whatever he does is a treat.
It's been weeks, maybe even months since I've responded to Home Free Reaction, except for a few songs. I was just busy but also mentally tyred! But I always kept listening to Home Free. Especially to this song, one of my favorites. It's Rob's voice that always does so much for me. Often even shivers that go through my whole body, I can understand that he is called GospelRob🥰, his voice touches me in my soul. A cover again so wonderfully good. I also liked John Denver's, but this version of Home Free surpasses the original. Yet they do maintain the respect for the song. Rob with his overwhelmingly beautiful lead combined with the others is great again. And wow, all those runs. Adam who has swallowed another drum kit😉 finishes it off completely. In one word phenomenal👏❤ But also this. I can understand that there is doubt with Chance. Yes, they are all super good. But Rob is my favorite. All the songs where he has the lead, such as Dreamer, Go Rest High On That Mountain etc. are at the top of the list. But Chance has something that attracts me too. He has something special with his raw voice. Of the solo records, it is also Chance's that I have on my playlist. For always a Dutch Home Fry❤❤ ❤❤❤
Adam Rupp can do great high notes, as you just heard. But I agree w/ you about who's the favorite. While I love and admire all the guys' voices, Rob's voice is the only one that makes me believe in God.
I’m an old fart and became a teenager when John Denver released this. I truly love it. I was worried when HF did this, but like every thing else, they actually upgraded it! 🎶🥰 As for your plan, For October you should do Halloween music from Hound and Fox, Bass Gang. Then hit HF again for Christmas. They have a new CD that will be out by then. Have fun!

Yes. Didn't they say it took them 5 or 7 yrs working on & before getting ready for this? ❤❤
The first harmony was Rob on lead the 2 higher voices was Austin and Adam Rupp
That was my conclusion too.
I love how Rob's voice is so expressive! Thanks!
They're all amazingly talented 😍 but 💯 agree Rob is my favourite ❤
When Rupp starts beatboxing Tim takes the high harmonies with Austin
