I find it difficult to compare skiers from different eras. The material has changed and evolved. Slope preparation is currently different and is also difficult to compare.
There is no question that there have been many outstanding personalities who have inspired many people through skiing. They had a charisma that was not only defined by fame and success.

I'm from the Netherlands so I have no dog in this fight but Aamodt's combined career total of twenty World Championship and Olympic medals is an all-time best. He is the second-youngest male alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal (age 20 in 1992; Toni Sailer was two months younger in 1956). Until 2014, he was also the oldest alpine skier to win an Olympic gold medal. For almost six years, Aamodt led the all-time Marathon World Cup ranking, with a total of 13,252 points. By winning the super-G race at the 2006 Olympics, Aamodt became the first male alpine skier to win four gold medals in the Olympics. If you win the world championship in any sport your considered the best, and all the rest of the world cares about is the Olympics. Aamodt exceeded in both AND he mastered the whole mountain, skiing every alpine discipline, that you don't see today. I think it's safe to say that Aamodt deserves his position. Btw, Ingmar Stenmark has repeatedly shared his admiration for Aamodt - and visa versa.

  • @jsmith1746

Very shocked five time overall WC champion Marc Giradelli did not make the list. Same with four time overall champ Pirmin Zurbriggen. In addition to being second and third, respectively, in number of overall World Cup titles, both were great all-around skiers, with wins in every Alpine discipline over the course of their careers (with the exception of Parallel, which was not run during their careers). None of the other Men who have won at least three World Cup titles have won in every event that was competed in their careers. Hirscher, in the lead with 8 titles, never won a downhill or combined event. Gustav Theoni, tied third with Zurbriggen, never won a downhill. Phil Mahre and Stenmark, both tied with three titles, never won downhills or super-G (super-G being added as an event right near the end of their careers).

Zurbriggen was something like Pete Sampras of tennis, not including him is a very odd choice and for me personally an offense. The same goes for arguably the most versatile skier of all time Marc Girardelli. All skiers in the list are amazing, but these two giants simply must not be omitted.

I have a results based rating that counts only world cup results - an not, like ski-db, olympics and world championships, trying to make the incomparable comparable. According to this, the most accomplished male skiers to date are:
    1 Ingemar Stenmark SWE
    2 Marcel Hirscher AUT
    3 Marc Girardelli LUX
    4 Pirmin Zurbriggen SUI
    5 Hermann Maier AUT
    6 Aksel-Lund Svindal NOR
    7 Gustav Thoeni ITA
    7 Alberto Tomba ITA
    9 Benjamin Raich AUT
    10 Stephan Eberharter AUT
Franz Klammer is not in the top 20 as he did only downhill, however, as the best downhiller ever, he deserves an honorable mention. Marco Odermatt will be in the top 10 in a couple of years if he continues to ski like this. Henrik Kristoffersen is also close to the top 10. The best Americans are Phil Mahre and Bode Miller as ## 14/15 respectively.
The top 10 women as of today are:
    1 Annemarie Moser Proell AUT
    2 Lindsey C. Vonn USA
    3 Mikaela Shiffrin USA (active)
    4 Vreni Schneider SUI
    5 Katja Seizinger GER
    6 Renate Goetschl AUT
    7 Hanni Wenzel LIE
    8 Anja Paerson SWE
    9 Maria Riesch GER
    10 Erika Hess SUI
Hence Shiffrin isn't #1 yet, but the top 3 are very close and Shiffrin likely will be #1 by the end of this season. Lara Gut and Petra Vlhova have good chances to end their careers in the top 10.

To create such a list, clear objective criteria are needed: time period that is counted, number of victories in the overall World Cup, number of overall victories in discipline World Cups, number of World Cup victories per discipline, number of World Cup and Olympic medals per discipline, outstanding performances in one discipline, outstanding performances overall in each discipline.
This list should definitely include all World Cup riders who have won at least one race in ALL individual disciplines (downhill, super-G since 1985, giant slalom, slalom):
Jean-Claude Killy (without super-G), Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Bode Miller, Kjetil André Aamodt and Günther Mader. In addition, all overall World Cup winners with at least 3 large crystal globes in their collection who have not won in all disciplines: Marcel Hirscher, Gustav Thöni, Hermann Maier, Ingemar Stenmark, Phil Maire and Marco Odermatt.
In addition, you also have to take into account athletes on this list with outstanding performances in individual disciplines: e.g. Franz Klammer, Aksel Lund Svindal, Beat Feuz, Stefan Eberharter, Didier Cuche, Bode Miller, Lasse Kjus, Michael von Grünigen etc.
We already have 12 athletes in the first two categories, and it is very difficult to find objective and fair criteria to remove 2 athletes from this list. One criterion could be: number of World Cup victories achieved in relation to the number of World Cup races held in the respective season.
Günther Mader would probably be thrown out of the list,
as he has not achieved more than 2 World Cup victories in any individual discipline - apart from the Super-G.
Conclusion: I would like to help continue this discussion with objective criteria...

@@speedkingz And I guess you are too young, but Toni Sailer in 1956 is the only man other than Killy to win gold medals in every Olympic alpine skiing event. He for sure should be on the list.

Forgetting Wayne Wong, Spyder Sabich, Glen Plake and Jonny Mosely. I mean, watch any real ski movie, by Warren Miller or Matchstick, and check out the local villains. Not hating on any of the Norwegians, just being comfortable with a broader definition of "skiing".

He is the only alpine skier to win a DH, SL and GS globe. Incredible! I have him at 9th OAT.
