I have played this tuning for years and you wouldn't believe the songs and instrumental tunes I can play ,Blues country gospel I have played with some really good guitar players that were amazed how I can play this way ,I'm not bragging I can play just about anything in open E ,self taught this is the first guy that's put a good video playing in open E, and with a good capo I can play the same in the other major chords,This way of playing is almost like two guitars playing because you can play lead and rhythm at the same time.Its took years for me to really learn to play like this but it's amazing what you can play in open tuning,I wish I could show you what I've learned to play this way
Broke my string "G". Then found my way here. You clearly have been through the school of "broken strings and guitars". Thabk you for the caveman level of instruction. It might seem to some thar you're explaining too much. But, i also found that u explaining the tuning of a string down or up to reach the correct tuning was exactly what i needed. Best video bar none, on the physical process of tuning to open (E). I really liked how the video covered the potential negatives of this tuning. Then proceeded to show a technique on how to best avoid those possible negatives. Most videos on open (E) either are against the tuning all together, do to the negatives or just jump right into Open (E) without the warnings or best practices. This is a great video on open (E) Tuning.,

Hi Joe, just a line or so to say what a great teacher you are. If I had been taught by someone like you when I first picked up a guitar I would not have got as bored and picked playing up a lot quicker. I’m 70 now but I think I would have been a great deal better if I’d been guided by someone like yourself. So all you up and coming guitarists take note.

I think a lot of the teachers out there go for sensational titles to their videos, but the content very rarely matches it. Joe, I have begun taking your advice and using a metronome practicing these exercises and not worrying about how I may sound right now. Thus, I practice on this exercise 5-10 minutes daily. Additionally, I have incorporated using my Zoom handheld H4N pro recorder playing songs I have learned from you and others. Naturally, I need to improve certain parts of songs, but;, overall, I'm headed in the right direction. Thanks so much for your sage advice and layed back style.

Dude, I learned more from you in 30:45 than I have in years. Excellent presentation. It's refreshing from the grind and limitations of standard tuning, I found a majority of happy notes that live and breath in this style of tuning, it moved the creativity of my soul. A million thanks!!!!
Trying to teach myself slide, tuning to helps a lot in coming up with licks while playing. I'm having lots of luck on the 11th and 12th fret just wiggling about between the two on the top strings.

Well the thing to remember is that sometimes, if we are trying to play something that is too difficult we can get bored . I don't know if you are struggling with this, but maybe check some of my other videos ?

Two related questions: 1) Does the open E tuning put any additional or undo pressure on an acoustic guitar? 2) If yes, why not tune down a bit to open D instead; maybe use a capo to go back up to E but put less pressure on the guitar? What do you think?

Yes, joe,thanks for being patient, and by the way i,maid up,that tuneing, very very long ago back when tuning that way was not popular and some time rejected by other players i,used to work with, and staring out there was no,one,around to,show,me,what to,do, i,even though broken strings,can not be replaced, now, I have masters, it, I now know hundreds of chords and, lead, guitar, i,can give you lessons, not bragging don't get me wrong, I know so,many,cover tunes, you will not be leave it i,love,black metal music, it is my first choice BUT, I play 80,s,metal for fun, no,one believes in me, so,I'm doing what i,have to do, and i,hope,we,can learn from each other, and thanks for your assistance and heads up on, tuneing, MY WAY,, I,honestly say I'm, one of the first ones to tune, that way, thanks, again JOE,,,
i have a cheap Epiphone acoustic that i'm going to restring for open e tuning. Would me putting a 10-48 set,be a good option? I set my bridge up a bit for slide play,but 2 of my old strings broke.

As a bonus you can use the capo to transpose the song to a Key that's easier on the voice.

Tune to open D and use a capo 2nd fret to,play in E...that way you wont snap a string, the action will be easier and the sound fatter.

That’s the way I do it!
Stones loved this and open G And of course regular tuning. But G and E is so compatible !

I would go with custom lights, especially if you are going to play slide. So that would be 11’s
