Many people think parachute jumpers or parkour guys are modern day heroes but it is really that heroes are these kind of small guys who put out fires no questions asked.

My grandparents lived in Sant Barbara when they were evacuated because a brush fire was headed towards their neighborhood. Before they left, my grandfather turned on all of the sprinklers on the property figuring he had nothing to lose. Well, the home behind theirs burned but my grandparents' home didn't get singed. I am sure the sprinklers helped some, but it was more the firefighters doing a hell of a job keeping the flames at bay.

Except for the fact that the vegetation prevents mudslide when it rains. So to save your house from fire you destroy your down slope neighbors when it rains.

The helicopter pilots are the highest level of professional. The Fireman also. Their are highlights in life, you know, people that actually have a brain fighting that fire. The homeowners are the best also. They are using their garden hoses but are not shy about running for their lives when the fire is to big and then right back in when the helicopter extinguishes the fire. You think flying a helicopter is easy, those things are a nightmare, and them being able to pinpoint the drop in the right spot just saved those homeowners houses. Hurrah for all concerned.

Maintain defensible space: min. 100 ft. clear cut perimeter around property and esp. don’t have trees and shrubs hugging your house, and remember, native plants are drought tolerant, some fire resistant, but none are fire proof.

The L.A. Times reported -and I'm sure it killed them to do it-that enviros stopped the brush mitigation around Topanga Canyon by the L.A. Department of Water and Power in the Pacific Palisades in 2019 because of "community concerns about protected plants in the construction area."
The Times reported in 2019 that DWP wanted to replace old wooden electricity poles with steel ones to lessen the fire fuel in Topanga Canyon. They also hoped to widen fire breaks on the slope leading from the Palisades to Pacific Coast Highway.

nice video. Good job on the firefighters and the helicopter crews. I would be out there cutting those trees down. Why do these home owners have all those trees right next to their homes if they know is potential fuel for fires? The reporter points out how the clearance has helped the firefighters control the flames. I would advice those home owners and the city to plant a line of Saguaro cactus or any cactus for that matter since they do contain a lot of water on those hills. using native species helps to control fires near the homes.

Gov. Newsom should have had control burns done, and brush cleared, but he didn't provide the money to the fire departments. He would rather cut their budget and pocket the money.

This is an area that was originally built in the 60's. The new homes and construction seen is where older homes were demolished or remodeled.

The fire engines are getting water from fire hydrants. The water drops from helicopters are filling up from fire engines, back yard swimming pools, ponds, lake, strategic placed portable drop tanks ( looks like a 3000 - 5000 gallon) orange or yellow square or round swimming pool.

Are Californians really big on privacy? There are so many large hedges and trees in front of windows and all around the houses. Pretty, but deadly.

Hell IDK WHY they wait so long to try and stop this deal. You'd think they'd get 3 or 4(or more)tanker planes rollin through there at the beginning. They have a 747 for one thing.HUGE amount of water. Can't believe they let these get to where they are.

I know this post was three years ago. But it’s usually about 20-30 minute flight time for closest air tanker to the pacific palisades. The fire in this video reached the top of this hill in that same amount of time. Plus the availability of tankers depends on how many other fires are going on throughout Southern California

@@auggie803 Trees and vegetation stop erosion when it does rain. This is why you can see some of the hillside is landscaped with shrubs in a grid fashion. In a few shots you can see small landslides with large boulders near the bottom of the canyon. The next heavy rain will result in heavy mud flows and a slide or two.
This fire was the result of a discarded cigarette out of a vehicle on Pacific (the road through the canyon).
