  • Austin Symphonic Band. November 22, 2015, concert at Austin ISD Performing Arts Center in Austin TX. ASB performing Russian Sailors' Dance by Reinhold Glière, tr. Chase Hampton. Director Richard Floyd conducting. Concert title: "A Fall Tapestry." Videography by Golden Arm Media in Austin TX. Audio recording by On Site Digital, Randy Bryant owner.
    Program notes by David Cross:
    Russian Sailors’ Dance (1927)
Reinhold Glière (1875-1956), transcribed by Chase Hampton
"Russian Sailors’ Dance" is the best known excerpt from Glière’s landmark ballet “The Red Poppy.” The scene depicts an uprising on a Chinese ship and the successful intervention of the Russian sailors. This energetic dance music is based on Yablochka (Little Apple), a popular Russian folk tune, and it takes the form of a series of variations in this work.
Born in Kiev in 1875, Glière was the son of a maker of wind instruments and became an accomplished violinist. When musical historians review the twentieth century, it will probably be found that Glière’s greatest service to his art was in his work as a teacher of composition. He has always possessed a remarkable power of drawing out the real genius in his students and of inspiring them with all the best traditions of Russian music. Such brilliant composers as Prokofiev, Khachaturian and Miaskovsky all studied with him.

This is my transcription I did in high school! I didn't realize groups are playing it. I've learned a lot about orchestration since, but doing this definitely kick-started that learning process, and having it performed was a big boost that helped me keep at it. Thanks!

So you transcribed this song from the original? And you did it in high school? That’s incredibly impressive!

I love this piece of music and I love being able to see the players up close like in this video. Most of the other renditions are played as though they just want to get it over with. This has a proper majestic sound to it and I love it. I almost wish I could live in Austin just to attend one of this group's concerts from time to time, but no, To freaking humid and hot and to many hurricanes. I've been through a couple of those and never again if I have anything to say about it. Thankfully I can hear this on You Tube.
Edit: Interesting that the Austin Symphonic BAND, has one lone bass viol in the back next to a lone tuba. Their sounds compliment each other nicely.

Good work in the band, but this should have been reshot after the camera people knew which instruments to highlight and when.

So lame that some one can't tell the difference between a concert band and orchestra.
