Ford 6.7 Powerstroke Coolant Drain & Refill Primary & Secondary System How-To

- This video will show you how to drain and refill the primary and secondary coolant systems on the Ford 6.7 Powerstroke diesel and also shows you how to drain the engine block as well. This was done on a 2015 F-350 but should be the same procedure for the 2011-2022 F-250, F-350, and F-450 Superdutys. Ford and motorcraft has discontinued the orange coolant that originally came in the 6.7 powerstroke diesel and replaced it with the Motorcraft VC-13-G yellow coolant. Ford claims you can mix the yellow with the original orange without any issues. I purchased the coolant from Amazon and provided a link below. To do this entire job you should at least buy a minimum of five gallons of coolant concentrate and mix 50/50 with five gallons of distilled water only. Ford also recommends using a vacuum coolant system refilling tool to prevent air pockets and cavitation in the cooling system. I will also provide a link below to the tool I used in the video which worked very well.

Been looking into this job on my 6.7 and I have to say your video is by far the best I’ve seen. The fact that you go the extra mile and take out your wheel well for the viewer to get a better view and you tackle the block drain plug just to see if it’s worth it, really shows that you care about you viewers, you’ve got another subscriber. I used to do that one for one when pouring water and coolant, then a buddy fixed my ocd brain. Told me a 50/50 mix is 2 gallons and 2 gallons no matter what sequence you pour them. Glad to see I’m not the only one that does it that way!

Thanks for the video very helpful, Completed mine 10/14/22, When draining after the coolant stopped flowing on it's own I used a blow gun to pressurize the fill tanks and was able to get maybe another 1.5 gallons out without removing the block plug or heater. All and all I was able to get out 7.7 gallons or 30.8 quarts of the 32 QT capacity. I refilled without the vacuum device, warmed it up and drove it a short distance adding coolant as required. Now I will monitor it for a week to ensure more air has not come out requiring additional coolant.🤩

Good video. Very detailed and clean job. I did my 2016 6 months ago and I went the flush route. I drained coolant, pulled thermostat (was replacing with low temp) refilled with distilled and let run for awhile and then drained water, replaced new thermostat and refilled with fresh coolant.

good job bro. you were very detailed step for step. others wouldn't know about draining the oil cooler. only thing i don't do is that extra fanciness of using the vacuum system.
Very informative, my 2011 states 29 quarts initial factory fill. Have done this once and am ready to do again. The vacuum system will save you from adding a gallon the next day.

First and foremost, great video. I just wanted to let you know that you showed all the locations required to drain the radiator fluid. Very detailed and straightforward. We could use more videos like yours. My main issue is, how in the @#$% did you turn that secondary petcock so quickly? Who are you? Thor? It took me a couple of hours to get that little thing to cooperate. Seriously, though, fantastic video. Thank you very much for your commitment to detail.

Be sure and read the capacity and specifications section in your owners manual. A coolant additive is also required. My 2017 calls for Motorcraft Coolant additive VC-12 for Orange Engine Coolant Revitalizer although that may have changed if the Yellow coolant is the new and proper coolant. Good video, learned a lot.

Amazing tutorial I’m a first time diesel owner and want to get in the habit of working on my own truck a 2015 ford f-250 6.7 you’re the best man made everything look so simple. 1 question for the vacuum pump it’s not really necessary right? Just to check for potential leaks???? Ty again
Although it’s not necessary it is recommended by ford because it gets all the air out of the cooling system. When air gets trapped in the cooling system it causes cavitation which starts to breakdown the aluminum on the front cover where the way pump goes in.

I think I'll drain both radiators, refill both with distilled, run it, and then drain that and refill a second time with the 50/50. My new to me 2012 has never been drained, but it only has 25k on it.
This is the route I plan on going. How many gallons or quarts of distilled did u use and how long did u run it?
Excellent video. Seems to be pretty complicated compared to the older vehicles systems. I had a 2001 7.3 powerstroke that was way easier. Once again manufactuers just want you to bring it in to their service department for a high dollar fluid change.

Of the 7.5 gallons that drained, how much do you think came out at the block heater/lower drain. Im wondering if it is worth the hassle, rather than doing a drain/fill (both systems and the pil cooler line), driving a month or so, and doing a 2nd drain/fill and call it good.
It is a great video with what seems like a lot of work, and the system still had old coolant in it (presumably from EGR cooler).
After pulling the block drain plug and heater I’d say only about 2-3 quarts is all that came out so I’d say not really worth it. Originally I was hoping more would have came out but oh well. I think you’d be fine doing it the way you described and yes there was still a little left in the egr cooler that you can’t get out.

Can a guy mix the concentrate and then followed by distilled water gallon by gallon by just pouring into the over flow?
Also, around your transmission mine seems to have the same leak/weep. Do you know what’s causing yours
You can do it that way for the first few gallons because it will all mix in eventually. Just be careful when it starts to get full then you’ll want to premix the rest so you get an equal mixture. As far as the leak this is a buddy of mines truck and haven’t looked into the leak yet.

Thanks. I actually over bought because I wasn’t sure how much would come out. So to do both primary and secondary you’ll be safe buying 5 gallons of concentrated coolant and mixing it with 5 gallons of distilled water. It’s always better to have more than not enough.

I just drain and fill both radiators every 30,000 miles My truck was a late build 2019 and came with the new 100,000 coolant .

If it’s just a little bit it won’t hurt anything you could also just use a turkey baster or a fluid extractor to pull out what you need a lot easier and less mess then getting on the ground and opening the drain valve again.
Any issues if mixed green with orange antifreeze/coolant?
Ford confirmed this won’t cause any issues when mixing green and orange. Not sure why ford has to keep switching it up all the time.

For the secondary coolant drain I just disconnect the hose leading to the trans cooler, much easier to get to

I ended up taking the entire drain plug out and having issues screwing it back in, any tips?
Were you able to get it back in. I believe the plug kind of snaps back in.
@@BLUECOLLARGARAGE yea, I ended up in bolting the bumper bracket. When I got my entire hand in there I was able to get to plug in straight and twist.
If I do not have the airvac refill system what would be the old fashion to refill ???
Just mixing the coolant in jugs with distilled water and pouring directly into the reservoir and squeezing the upper radiator hose from time to time getting all the air pockets out.

Thanks for subscribing and the support. Ford recommends the first coolant change at 60,000 miles and then every 45,000 miles after that or every 3 years. The oem tools vacuum coolant filler I used is well worth the investment especially if your going to be doing this every 3 years.

At what psi setting were you using your air compressor to create the vaccum.
Right around 100psi is what I had my compressor set at. The instructions says it can be anywhere from 71-110 psi.
Is the driver side drain the primary
What size air compressor did you use and do you think a 6 gallon compressor would get the job done?
Mine is a 33 gallon but you should have no problem using a 6 gallon.
If not using the vacuum tool how would you get all the air out of the coolant system?
Just by squeezing the upper radiator hose while filling and overtime it should work it’s way out. Just need to keep checking the level in the morning for a couple days after it cools. Ford recommends the vacuum tool because if air does get trapped in the system it can cause cavitation which was a known problem on the 6.4 powerstroke.

Thanks for the positive comments. I’m not sure on the test strips or Vic-12 additive. This was my buddy’s truck all I know is he had the cooling system flushed awhile back and now he’s at 88k miles or so.
I see my coolant temp rise above oil temp on initial start. Is that normal?
Totally normal coolant temp always rises before oil temp with first start up.
What about the coolant additive?
No need to mess with the heater block plug. Just undo the hose on the oil cooler down by the oil drain pan.its the lowest point you can drain coolant.

@@BLUECOLLARGARAGE I found this tip on PTT's channel. Also if you want to save 8-10 bucks a gallon try this. I dont know how to upload from my drive to show everyone but just look it up. Motorcraft doesn't make coolant. Zerex was their supplier for the gold and orange and Zerex is owned by Valvoline. Now Prestone is their supplier for the yellow. Look up the SDS sheet on Motorcraft Yellow then look up Prestone amam with and without Corguard. All 3 have 2eha, percents vary but by only less than 1%. Also a good friend of mine delivers Motorcraft coolant to Motorcraft distributors from the Prestone plant. All Motorcraft is rebranded. Like their hub assembly. I work for SKF, we make all seals, bearings and hub assemblies for all manufacturers, we have a repack/labeling division that places each manufacturers stamp on our products then places these products in their supplied box. It's all rebranding. But diehard Ford fanatics will try to prove me wrong and they cant. There is no such thing as Motorcraft oil or filters, they do not make them. Now as for the additive pack for wants you to use, it's only for extended drain intervals. Who goes 300k before changing coolant? Drain and fill every 2-3 years and you will be fine. I'd never done a flush of anything

Second tank is for the egr cooler.
After all the cost of changing the coolant , why not spend 20 dollars more and replace the two radiator caps? That is a major weak spot in the system. good video though.

@@06200XCWI can't remember what that comment was pertaining to! I know that when I installed the block heater, I put a vacuum on the tank to minimize fluid loss...just make sure you don't put it so it's completely sealed. It'll suck the coolant into the vacuum. Ask me how I know!!
