The lack of love for Sonic Rush Adventure here is criminal. Building up the main island was so fun and rewarding. 3/4 of the vehicles were very fun to use. The exploration was great. The dialogue could skipped and you would still be directed where to go. Honestly amazing
Sonic Rush Adventure is honestly my favourite Sonic game, period. It's so underrated.
Even though I find the vehicles pretty fun as-is, I get why people don't like them. But the non-linear progression they allow through some parts of the game and the hidden islands to explore for definitely redeem it for me.
The missions are also a super great addition considering how short 2D Sonic games typically are. Especially as somebody who always loves the sound test, unlocking the music through speedrun missions and the like was very rewarding and cool.
And the level design is among the best in all 2D Sonic games. For me it's consistently the game I have the most fun going back to.

Fr ppl don't understand how much of a fundamental improvement sra is over rush and anyone who says "sra is only rush but with filler" is lieing straight up
and the level design is just so much better than the first game, bosses too. even if you dont like the exploration or vehicles, i dont see why it gets dogged so much compared to the first game when the main gameplay is a thousand times more enjoyable, and doesnt rely on constant instakill stage hazards that you cant see coming unless youve memorized the stage and will kill you even if youre being careful
also the ost is criminally underrated, its wonderful and gets unfairly looked over just because its not hideki naganuma

It has extreme consistency to the point of no bad levels

INSANE replay value to the point i might have beaten it 10 times now
Amazingly constructed levels so every level feels unique even without gimmicks (with said gimmicks also being really good)
The only real flaw is that the bosses aren't that good and i kinda want more new levels since the new ones are so good, but i think the last one is a testment to the game's quality instead of a real flaw

Sonic advance 3 and rush are the best 2D sonic games to me. Love how the tricks keep the flow going and the team combination is really cool. Surpised it hasn't revisited. I love rush because tricks and the sheer quickness of memorising the stage plus the OST for both are heavenly.

Hold up. How can you say Sonic 3 has less level when you can just literally combine it with Sonic & Knuckles that literally give you the full game in itself because Sonic 3 and S&K cartridges work together. Hence why Sonic 3 and Knuckles exist especially in the Mega Collection.
But even if you count them as one game IMO sonic 2 should still be higher on the list cause while I love most of the levels in sonic 3 I didn’t really like S&K as much when I grew up playing it on the Mega collection. 🤷🏻♂️
I prefer Sonic 3 over 2. Concerning levels, Sonic 3 has some decently long acts (Launch Base and Carnival Night)

So are some of the 8 bit games? Besides, game advertises itself as a sequel to sonic 3, being meh or good is how people would describe sonic 1 after playing sonic 2. The game itself isn't the worst game ever, but it really should be lower because of how it's advertised as compared to what we got.

I’m surprised no one talks about starlight zone, it’s really underrated and my favorite zone of all the sonic games I’ve played
I’ve only ever played the first game and the starlight zone was such a breath of fresh air after the previous zone!

Yeah, people always pretend that Sonic 1 has just one good zone, but always ignore this one
I would have included sonic 3 and knuckles as one game. To me that’s the best . I love the stage transitions and how all the gameplay builds off the other elements. One of my least favorite things about the special stages in mania is they stop the flow of gameplay to unlock stuff that is fun sure but doesn’t add to anything once you get back into the level. In sonic 3 and knuckles you get shields, rings and lives.

@@UltraSTH They are pretty easy when you know what to do but the worst part is how to get there, you have to find a key in levels and you cannot take *ANY* damage or the key will be lost, and thats all for one try on the awful special stages.

The 8-bit version of Sonic 1 (especially the Master System version), while not really one of my favourite Sonic games (up to the ranks of Sonic Advance 1 & 3, Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Mania (original and Plus), Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 for the Dreamcast, the Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing duology, Sonic Unleashed HD, the Sega Superstars duology and Sonic 1 for the Sega Genesis and especially mobile devices), is an underrated blast from the past!
I completely disagree with the low positions of the 8-bit games, like Sonic 1 being below the mediocre Sonic Blast :(.
Even with Green Hill, Labyrinth and Scrap Brain appearing here, they are totally different of the Mega Drive version.
But ok, the rest of the list is pretty accurate.

Mania is a lot of fun but do to the rehash of all the stages It falls just short for me. 3 & K is where its at. now if you add S3 & K A.I.R then there is no contest. now If there is a Mania 2 with all new zones and allow a Max control from the start after you unlock moves then that could take down S3 & K. But thats asking a lot tbh

Because they’re two completely different games released months apart from each other. Yes they are one game with the lock in cartridge and were supposed to be one game when developed but they were released as two separate games and that’s what they are
If he included them as one game then logically the average wouldn't be that high. Considering he liked one a lot more than the other, the average would put it in between where he put them both. Logically anyway, he could have put it where he wanted regardless. Also what Steve says.

The entire OST is a banger, in fact this game is IMO better than the Mega Drive version, didn't deserved do be ranked so lowly. Same with the majority of the other Master System/Game Gear titles.

Sonic 3 & knuckles: Am I a joke to you?!?!
I think if you count Sonic 3 and Knuckles as one game, it's the best entry the series has to offer. The levels are well connected to each other which helps give off more of an adventure-type feel. The boss battles are the most creative and fun in the whole series to me, especially the Doomsday Zone which would lay the groundwork for how Super Sonic boss battles would be made for the series moving forward. The story is simple yet fun to follow, and the way how it was told without using dialogue was brilliant. And not to mention, I feel like Sonic 3&K is the only game where getting all 7 chaos emeralds actually feels worth it. Not only do you have the novelty of playing as Super Sonic, but you also unlock the true ending of the game.
In terms of core gameplay, Sonic 2 is without a doubt the best Sonic game ever made with its short, sleek level design and fast-paced gameplay. But in terms of everything else, Sonic 3&K provides the most fulfilling experience imo.
(Obviously this is excluding Sonic Mania, which is kinda unfair to compare with the rest of the "Classic" Sonic games considering that it was made decades after the original 2D games.)
Yeah was gonna comment to say that Sonic 3 & Knuckles really should have been rated as one game since that’s what was clearly intended and IMO the true version of the game artistically and design-wise. Agree that Sonic 3 is better than Sonic and knuckles if they’re counted separately but combined id put it in the number one or two spot.

I agree with what you said about Sonic 2's zones being great save for the ones you listed, the problem is the bad zones are all concentrated towards the end so it feels like the game just becomes less fun after a certain point.

I personally don't rate Mania as highly as the originals because I feel that they reuse way too much from the older games. Even in the newer zones, there are many concepts that are used like the bumpers from the metropolis and the electric orbs. It is a fantastic game, but the lack of originality kinda kills it for in. In Generations, 2D stages were made in 3D and 3D stages were made in 3D which helped with that issue in my opinion.
That was probably the point. Sonic mania is more of a homage to og sonic fans, I’m sure of the mania team made a new game there’d be a lot more originality in it
If you bought mania thinking it was going to be a completely new experience with no reused concepts or mechanics, that's your fault.

I agree with how Sonic 2 and 3 can change places based on how much fun you had with them. I think Sonic 3 would get the second place over Sonic 2 for me, over something Sonic 2 didn't have and becomes a problem later on. Alternate music for different acts.
Because the acts in Sonic 2 are way longer than in Sonic 1, to hear the same music on act 2 gets a bit of a repetitive feeling. This gets worse on Metropolis Zone that have three whole acts. I'm sorry but... no. And I'm not complaining about the amount of acts or their length because even fangames did the same and did it right, like Sonic After the Sequel. Each act was unique, had an interesting gimmick or aesthetic about it. And the music was also different for each act. It's why, at least for me, Sonic 3 was more enjoyable for me. The music made each act feel refreshing, not to mention that I prefer the songs from Sonic 3 over Sonic 2 and 1.
