I feel like you dove right into "hardmode" by doing a realistic portrait with red, yellow, blue, and white! It's amazing what you were able to achieve when you needed to mix those colors on your own. I wonder how much easier it would have been if you did have a burnt umber and/or black to be able to adjust your color tones without needing to work at keeping the hues consistent. You did a great job, it's a beautiful picture of you and you made a beautiful painting out of it!
When mixing blue and red paints to get purple it will always comes out darker then you want (or muddy like you said), all you need to do is add a little bit of white to get the purple to look good
I respect you so much for not trying to explain your emotions about receiving the black creator award. I think people are often pushed to explain their feelings before they’ve gotten the chance to process them themselves, so it was amazing to hear you say that you were upset but you weren’t going to expand on why because you hadnt had enough time to fully process it yourself
Solution for the mineral spirits smell: using linseed oil instead. Basically, there are two different things you can add to oil paints to make them more liquid, mineral spirits and oil medium. Mineral spirits work by breaking down the oil in the paint with alcohol. Its really good for cleaning paint from your brush or if you want the oils to dry really quickly, but the fumes are intense and it can start dissolving and lifting layers of paint already on your canvas if there's too much in one spot. Oil medium is more of the oil that is used in the paint itself to hold the pigments together until they dry, linseed oil is the most common type. Oil medium can take thick oil paints from a little bit more liquid to a thin glaze to tint an area. Adding more oil will increase the length of time it takes for everything to dry though. mineral spirits isn't actually what you wanted to use to thin out the paint. Rather to thin out oil paint and make it more liquid you want to use an oil medium, like linseed oil, with your oil paints. Mineral spirits are called paint thinners, but they thin out the paint by breaking down the oil - which is exactly what you want when cleaning your brush, but not so much when painting. Plus linseed oil doesn't have the same fumes problem spirits do. You still should work in a room with air flow, but you're not gonna get dizzy just leaning over your palette for too long.
You're such a goddess when it comes to colored pencils, that it's adorable to see you so intimidated by other media! Except girl -- you OWNED those oils! Amazing job!
I always wanted to get better at drawing or painting, I keep watching tutorials but I never understand. Then I found your channel and watching you compare, do tests, challenge yourself, explaining what your trying to do. It really helped me learn, I take notes in my head and besides it’s way more interesting than some tutorial. Anyways I just wanted to say thank you and that I love your art ❤️
Well done Temms! 🤗 Great to see you pick up some paints again after such a long time! I can totally relate with the messy pallet, I have no idea how other artists neatly mix and organise their paint colours, especially the way they make using a palette knife look so easy! 😂
It came out really well, better than I expected. It's inspiring seeing you challenge yourself to new/different things and work with constraints like the number of colours.
Hi Temi ! I've watch your videos for a while now, and I just wanted to say that I really like your content and you, of course. You have a great personnality and a lot of talent(s) ! You often make me smile, so thanks for that ! And if I may, I think you are really beautiful (and your nails, girl, I can't ♥). Keep up the good work, wish you the best ! Kiss from France ! ;)
Congrats on your achievement! Also, I love this portrait! The fact you were able to do something so beautiful with only 3 colors blows my mind! You are so talented ❤
I’m sure it’s not the first time someone’s mentioned it but Jebus your artistic skills are fire but your ability to do anything with nails that long. QUEEN
Wow 😍 You are so talented, the painting turned out great despite your initial fear. I've been in the hardest and longest artist block. But this was so encouraging. Thank you 🤎
Love this so much, esp how a whole palette was made from just three colours. Mary sanche has this amazing underpainting video that explains that concept beautifully. It helped me understand why and how to do it.Its on guache though but I think the colour concept can be applied to oils as well.
This turned out really well. I was really curious about how you were going to manage it being a color pencil artist, but you did pretty good. Made me want to give oil paints a try myself.
Hi Temi! I’m a new fan of yours and I paint with oil paint pretty frequently. I started painting with acrylic first though. I normally use 2 yellow, 2 red, and 2 blues usually. Your painting looks so amazing when it came out!
Seriously brilliant! Diving into new (or incredibly old) Mediums is sometimes so daunting and I'm incredibly grateful that art boxes like upcrate and scrawlrbox exist as I wouldn't have been able to try even half the materials I have. I'm still too scared to try oil though.
When I paint, my under painting tends to be in crazy colors. So like if I were painting a face I'd use reds, yellows, and blues to form the face and provide an undertone that will help the skin tones have depth. Maybe trying it that way will help your issue with the underpainting you did here as well as your urge for more color when working with a limited pallet.
This is exactly what I want to do too. A saw a girl who only oil paints with 5 colors, red, yellow, blue, burnt umber, and white and I thought it was an incredible way to learn color theory, and her art was so realistic it was unreal 😂😭
Wonderful oil colors! The only one I'd add is raw umber. It may be just me but I find a cool brown easier to warm up with red or yellow than to cool a warm brown, especially with ultramarine. Also, Gamsol is a lot cheaper than most brands. You do need to ventilate your area well, though. I think your underpainting color was well chosen. In the video it looks like a good midtone compared to your hand. Letting the underpainting show through a bit is one of the strengths of doing an underpainting.
Even the underpainting is so well done, Temi! You should give yourself more credit I was lucky enough to learn about underpaintings in high school, it makes a big difference. And your mixing is done well too!
Weirdly if you look on the website it says there are only *supposed* to be 5 water soluble Lyra crayons. They cheaped out. Perhaps they cheaped out on the Burnt Umber too. In case you ever need oil paint thinner again, just go to the hardware store and get thinner there for cheaper!
ZORN palette! Anders Zorn was almost exclusively known for portraits, using yellow ochre, ivory black, vermilion and white - supposedly you can mix any skin colour!
This turned out amazing and if you wanted to capture your joy - you absolutely nailed it. I've been looking forward to this video since you posted the count down on instagram 😅 I would love to see you do more oil painting/ try the supplies from the other box for sure :)
beautiful .i would love to see more oil paintings .It's like this is your expertise that's how beautiful it is . I use gloves when doing oil or acrylic painting to protect hands unlike when we do coloured pencil art
Even though you were not really familiar with the medium you did SO well. I can't believe you made that fantastic painting with 3 colours!! Wow you're really underrated
That's pretty beautiful. Oil is special and can be difficult. My daughter has used oil . My sister years ago used acrylic then used a lacquer which sorta looked oily. Anyway love your work ..
Really nice. I have some oils that was given to me but haven't use. Definitely going to give it a try 😌
