This was not only a great explanation, but it was timely as well. The FLW Tour opener on Sam Rayburn was a perfect demonstration of the sort of precision you discuss here. Boat position, casting angle, current and structure all relating to the exact spot the fish are holding on is critical in triggering the fish into biting. I had never considered all of it together before. Brad Hallman explained that a bait would have to contact a specific piece of cover or structure to get schooled bass lit up. The bait could make contact with just about anything else in the area, but the deflection, sound, light reflection and action that drew strikes was only possible if the bait made contact with THIS rock, or THAT stump and from a specific angle. That action made all the difference and when repeated, drew strikes from every fish in the school. Any other presentation of the same lure to the same school would go completely ignored. Nicely done, Johnny.

If anyone just watched the first FLW tourney of the year on Sam Rayburn, this video is a prime example of the ones doing their homework offshore and finding the best spots with the best fish offshore. Prespawn fishing with majority of the fish hanging off ditches, drains, ledges, etc waiting on the water to warm to move up.
This video is a great explanation of all of that!
If someone could break down what they were doing out there it would be Jonny!

I fyi agree about making 1 only 10 casts on offshore spot. He'll if I make 3 or 6 casts in and come thru it that many times without a bite x its time to move. Rock piles. Boulders whatever it may be. When you present a lure that they can see normally they'll bite it. The other times they don't. But that's great advice. Use the laws of average to your benefit.

I fish tournaments my whole life and I've done well I usually win big tournaments 10% of the time and money almost all 90% of the time and little home field tournaments 65% of the time but I wish I had half the knowledge that you do. you ever go out and give people tips on their boat while fishing. I've never been one to even use my graphs but I've just started to I've always been that fisherman that fishes by the seat of my pants and I've always been extremely lucky but my luck hasn't been as good the last few years so I've actually gone out and bought a brand new 12-inch Garmin with live scope and I did win two tournaments just because of that live scope I just wish I knew how to read the graphs more and find my own places, instead of flying by the seat of my pants and just relying on luck. Great informational videos brother

Unless you've done it already, could you show structure on sidescan, and then w another camera, show yourself casting to the side of the boat out to it? And explain how you know WHERE to cast, That's one thing I'm trying to figure out.

Only making a couple casts to each area isn't talked about much in tournament/bass spin fishing, I've heard it a lot for fly fishing, especially pike/musky and small stream trout, but it's a good general rule as well, not just with flies, but conventional tackle too

You mentioned the tip about moving on after 10 or so casts if you don't get a bite. What if you happened to not be throwing the right bait at that time? Maybe the current suddenly shifted and the fish moved from the bottom to suspended. I know that's probably not the most common scenario, but I'd be interested to hear your take on when to try a different bait before calling the spot a bust.
    Great content as usual!

    • @FishtheMoment

Cher Cha I’ll mix it up, depending on how the spot sets up. If it’s wind current, I’ll usually cast into the wind and bring the bait back with the wind current. With dam generated current, Ive had success both ways. I usually try both and see which one works better.
