It would be cool, if they continued this program. There's so many gems on both the original Xbox and Xbox 360 that would be nice to see be playable on current consoles.

Apparently Hasbro would like for the games to get re-released so I think we could see it. Fall of Cybertron actually briefly had a digital-only Xbox One release.
Also, there is no excuse not to get Quake 4 added to backwards compatibility, boosted to 60FSP or 120FSP at this point. I'm optimistic it'll come given we got Quake 1 and 2 remaster and re-released.

quake 2 is already on xbox. came out months ago. and its crossplay with ps4 and pc and switch, i miss quake 4 and ET quake wars. and chromehounds. and a few others

Since Activision games are now on the table, I would love to see the 2009 "Wolfenstein" reboot & perhaps "Singularity" as well.

Hey, you and I almost have the exact same list especially with the Sonic games. Although I thought of a few more they could possibly do.
Cars 2006 video game. Sonic the hedgehog 2006. Sonic and Sega All-Stars racing not transformed, the original. Specters revenge, crazy taxi three, the Fairly OddParents breaking the rules, the SpongeBob SquarePants movie video game. SpongeBob SquarePants, lights, camera, pants. Crash bandicoot, the wrath of cortex. Crash twin sanity, crash nitro kart, crash tag team racing. Crash bandicoot, crash of the titans.
And this will most likely never get added but still honorable mention, Forza motorsport four.

I think it's good that they now have a dedicated preservation team. For Series X and future generations of Xbox. Because at that point we'll be digital only. Ownership will be long gone.

That would be nice but with SEGA working on a remake, chances are low.
Beyond license issues, there's a significant number of games that have been barred from the BC program that "coincidentally" had a remake in the works.

I really don't get why Microsoft didn't make Mechassault backwards compatible with the Xbox 360. It is literally a MICROSOFT TITLE, I grew up with that game under aged along side Halo 2.
I was thinking the same thing. It was published by Microsoft, but I believe developed by an outside studio. May be a hassle with the licensing. Who knows, but were fun games.

@@Joseph-kd2gy Man, it gets kinda boring having OG Xbox Xlinkai or Xemu as our only real enjoyment from the game. There needs to be a spiritual successor to this. Somewhere along the line of Crossout customization to ensure nothing gets old too. (Update) Correction, CXBX Reloaded handles Mechassult +DLC well too, my laptop doesn't have OpenGL 4 so I'm stuck with Mechassault being the only game I can properly emulate with CXBX instead of the more established Xemu-lator.

I don't think it is, it is pragmatic though.
Maintaining backward compatibility is the easiest way to keep people "within your ecosystem" by maintaining their library to anchor them.
That's why Spencer said several times that loosing the PS4/X1 generation was a curse because it was the real start of digital library and many built theirs on PS4.
That's why Sony made the effort to have the vast majority of PS4 titles backward compatible on PS5.
That's why Nintendo has been talking about leveraging their new Switch NSO account system to help in the transition to their new system (which most likely implies backward compatibility, at least digital).

It is PR talk. If you actually read the statement from Sarah Bond she never said that they are reviving backward compatibility. She said they "building on what they have done" and "comitting to forward compatibility". So what she is actually saying is everything that is compatibile with the current Xbox will be compatible going forward. This is game preservation, but its about preserving any game from now on. Not going back and making more games playable.
I love your backwards compatability content. Please keep it up. Hopefully Xbox can get all of its first party library compatible one day.

I actually didn't know Disney owned Spiderman's video game rights specifically, and Sony owned the movie rights specifically. Sounds messy, lol.
There was a time when Marvel wasn't doing well financially, so they sold the Movie rights to Sony, while Activision got the video game rights. While Activision no longer has the video game license, Sony will continue to have it as long as they make a Spiderman movie within every 5 years or risk losing it.
@@GenerationZ313 yes this was a big thing that causes a lot of issues these days. The Incredible Hulk tv and movie rights belong to universal studios. Which is why when marvel started their movie division they had to distribute the 2008 Hulk movie thru universal and the rest were distributed from paramount. Then Disney bought marvel but since Disney is a distributor themselves they don’t make stand alone Incredible Hulk movies because they would have to distribute thru a competitor. This is a reason disney bought 20th century fox because they owned the movie rights to X-men and fantastic four. Sony has been only playing nice with Disney letting disneys marvel studio make the film but Sony gets to distribute it and letting it connect to the rest of the MCU. So for hulk universal would have to make a similar deal with Disney if they wanted to release stand alone hulk movies. It’s all fucked up. I could be wrong but I believe Sony owns the ghost rider movie rights too which is why we probably haven’t seen an attempt to bring him into the MCU
Yeah, Disney has been pretty accommodating with their rights. The old Star Wars stuff and Lucasarts stuff was accommodated without any issues.
Disney owns all of Marvel, which means the Spider-Man IP is theirs, Sony only owns the rights to make movies but the character isn't their's.
I still think Halo CE and Halo 2 would be great to have in the program. Specially now thet halo 2 is back online!
Well…it’s back online via a fan effort, not officially. Regardless, I’ve been saying for a few years now that there is no reason Microsoft couldn’t just make CE and 2 backwards compatible and then make it so every Xbox copy (digital or otherwise) of MCC has the option to download all BC versions of games from inside the settings menu
I would love Sonic Heroes to be backwards compatible for Xbox, but with the rumored remake possibly happening, I doubt it will happen!

Shadow the Hedgehog is backwards compatible on 360, but not One or Series consoles.
I think they mean to make what currently backwards compatible with the Series-X/S, work on the XBOX App on PC. So, your digital OG-XBOX, XBOX360 and XBONE games will now be playable on PC. So, this would give handhelds like the ROG Ally a library increase via GamePass.

I really really hope that Microsoft gets the license from Hasbro to publish the Activision Transformers games onto the Series X/S for backwards compatibility like Transformers The Game, Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen, Transformers Dark Of The Moon, Transformers War For Cybertron and Fall Of Cybertron. I know Transformers Devestation and Rise Of The Dark Spark are already backwards compatible on the Series consoles due to being Xbox One titles putting them back on digital storefronts would be nice

Looking in to the process of porting over makes you really appreciate it. I think GoG put out some videos were workers talked about how hard and tedious it is to get just a handful of games resold/rereleased.

For me it is really easy to wish for some games as they are basically all the Sonic games, I'm talking about Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, Sonic 2006 and as a bonus as we are talking about Sega it would be Jet Set Radio Future but that one is more complex because of music licenses
Street fighter x tekken would be a great addition I bought it thinking it already was backwards compatible and it sadly is not

With Fortnite Festival being a thing and how there was interest in bringing back Guitar Hero, having those 360 games be backwards compatible could be a potential way for them to see if there's any interest left in the series. The fandom for rhythm games is still alive and considering how PDP is releasing a new guitar controller later on this month, there might be more talks about this happening with full awareness about how complicated music licensing is.
Mercenaries 2, Call of Duty Finest Hour and Big Red One, I don't think the Brothers in Arms games are BC. Big wishlist titles would be Wet and Silent Hill Homecoming and Downpour.
Silent hill homecoming and downpour are already backwards compatible. However, downpour can't be bought on the store and requires a disc.
Hell's Highway is Backwards Compatible.
Apparently the original Fable (non Anniversary version) isn't backwards compatible. I would like to see that come over. Also, I think retroactively adding achievements for Original Xbox games would be awesome.

I'm still waiting for Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein (2009) and Quake 4 to get back compat, especially since they now own both IDSoft and Activision who originally published these.
Would love to see Darkwatch and the non movie based Transformers games return as well.
High Moon made some great stuff before the CoD mines.
King Kong for Xbox 360 is playable on Series X, but was never available digitally. The precedence is there to allow you to play a backwards compatible game with no option to buy it digitally.
I still wonder how it would've been impossible for them to do a general emulator for the OG Xbox games with reading directly from the disc. It just seems odd. It would've been really nice to have it as an option that may have to play it safer with less enhancements for compatibility. And for Halo, it still makes zero sense why CE and 2 aren't compatible while every other Halo game from the 360 (almost all being in the Master Chief Collection too) are supported
Whwn they stopped updating the BC program, they kinda implied that was gonna be their plan.
They never had a general emulator because general emulators are terrible. The way emulation is done, especially these days (especially when the hardware being emulated had quirks you needed to figure out) is via using modern rendering methods for modern hardware, and then emulating the everything else as best as you can via compatibility layers. Literally, games are running in individual modes (proof of this can easily be seen in a game like Dark Souls, which arguably runs worse in BC than on 360 proper)
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction deserves the backwards compatibility treatment.

I think it was Wolfenstein (2009) that would have been an issue previously as Bethesda I believe made it and it was published by Activision. And now MS owns both.
I think you're right that this is most likely a support team for the in-development new hardware to make sure the current library can still be played on it. I think Xbox knows full well that keeping backwards compatibility is a good long-term strategy to make it easy to retain people on their platform.
i just realized that i own my original xbox for over 20 years now. bought it in nobember 2003 with halo and midtown madness 3 for 250€. i still own it and it still works😊
Don’t forget they can make games compatible if you own the disc but not make it for sale digitally, like Batman Arkham Origins.

Not sure if it's the only one but 50 cent blood in the sand got added to backwards compatibility but made it to where it's only playable if you have the disc available since they didn't offer a digital version when it was added. It be nice to see more games added like that but I'm assuming it's not very viable
Wolfenstein will probably soon work on series X, I would like to see Fatal Frame 1,2, Silent Hill 2 and Arx Fatalis work on series X.
I really hope Sarah Bond brings back the backwards compatibility program add more games to it, that's if Xbox can work something out with the Licensing Constraints, though involving with certain games.
Now that Microsoft owns Bethesda and Activision, I hope to see more Bethesda and Activision games added to the backwards compatibility list that hasn't been added yet.

I think the safest bet is that they may add games owned by Bethesda and Activision that do not have licensing ties to other companies.
Games that are Original IPs and do not have licensed products or musics like Singularity for exemple (unless there's some licensed music there that I forgot about).
I agree that this likely won't be a Xbox 360 or OG Xbox BC update. I think they just mean that their digital games from Xbox One and later will stay compatible with future consoles, which shouldn't be too hard since consoles just use PC architectures now. Not to mention the fact that they've been putting all their games on PC for 9 years now with no third party DRM, and there's no better way to preserve games than by doing that.
Thanks for the informative video, Adam! I'd really love to see Magna Carta 2 receive a backwards compatibility release. A niche game but a Korean RPG gem that would be great alongside the already backwards compatible Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Infinite Undiscovery JRPGs. Best from Australia!
For activsion side of things, True Crime streets of LA or probably the entire franchise even though I heard streets of New York was bad but if both of them get backward compatibility support, it would be cool
If the next console is digital only then looks like I will be just using the Series X for all my backwards compatibility stuff. Just finished King Kong not too long ago.
Xbox live is not connecting the last few days on the backwards compatible games anyone else having this issue ? At first I was getting a can not connect to Xbox live error code and today it changed to “there’s a problem with the credentials that you’re using to sign in” anybody else having this issue the last few days ?

Here’s the thing, I have games that I “rented” (or whatever people like to call digital purchases) over 20 years ago that still work on my modern machines. Think about that. No disc or cart that’s ever been sold has been able to work on whatever modern machine you upgrade to indefinitely.

True. What I do for older games is digitize my console game discs and mod the console to load them.
That way I can play the game on original hardware without degrading the discs.
I agree, I think she was talking about bringing existing games from series X, One, 360 and original to the upcoming Xbox. The next xbox will most likely be discless.
My own speculation is that they are expecting it to have a low volume of sales. It will be very powerful, non subsidized, very expensive and maybe have a dual boot into windows or a hybrid xbox/windows OS. Same as steam deck has a console mode and a linux mode.
Forgive me if I am wrong on this but I believe that Vivendi and the gaming division of Vivendi Universal was own at the time in the early 00’s by Universal and later in the late 00’s Vivendi left Universal and renamed the gaming division to just Vivendi,
and after the Activision merger they still own all copyrights and ip when they were with Universal and Vivendi.
So let’s say hypothetically if they were gonna re release the original Xbox version of The Simpsons Hit & Run, all they really have to do is ask Disney and EA (the current game license owners) for permission.
So no input from Vivendi and or Universal what so ever!

I also tend to go with your takeaway from that email considering how these companies move nowadays, so i don't expect anything. if they decide to bring new games to the back-compat program, great! and if not i wouldn't lose sleep over it.
The cool thing about Xbox back compatibility is that most games look and run better than they originally did. Fantasy games would be the activision Spider Man games. I’m thinking they may bring over some games that never came to console before. Activision owns Sierra so that would be interesting to see some games move to game pass.
the bad thing is sometimes they have to change the game. for example gta 4 they had to change the music on radio stations because of licensing issues.

Look! All I want is a way that you can deliver games to me cheaply and instantly. And I don't ever have to get up and get out of my chair or do anything at all. Is that so hard to ask? This is a serious problem that needs fixing! :D
My guess is the BC news is with regards to Remote Play. I could be wrong but I feel like older BC titles won't play remotely on mobile devices.
I think they're also simply recommitting that everything you play on your Series X/S will carry forward, including your BC titles.
I would absolutely love to see Dungeons and Dragons Heroes from OG Xbox added to backwards compatibility on the Series X. Had a blast playing that back in the day and still have my OG Xbox disc.

I really want the rest of those OG Xbox Sega games on the store. Outrun 2 and JSRF likely won’t get in due to licensing but I’d love to see Spikeout: Battle Street, Toejam & Earl 3, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog
Xbox 360 era is my favorite so I'd like to see The Sabotuer, Scarface, Godfather, Brothers in Arms, Ninja Gaiden, NFS Most Wanted, Xmen Wolverine Origins, and The Bourne Conspiracy.

X-Men legends games, deadpool, fantastic four the game and rise of the silver surfer hulk games like ultimates destruction and marvel ultimate alliance 1 and 2 since activision developed the games but they would need disney to sign off on it

The warriors and state of emergency from rockstar tho how possible warriors might be die to licensing with music and stuff.
Mortal. Kombat deadly alliance, deception,armageddon and Shaolin monks would be great to see backwards compatible as wb owns the mk series and wb has added their games to backwards compatible like mk9, batman arkham origins etc
I wish that Xbox at least carries over the OGX games that were already available on the 360 marketplace before the One was made (like Crash TWoC and Burnout 3).
I also wish that they actually update the program just one more time in honor (?) of the 360 marketplace shutdown.
There could be a small workaround with original Halo games; if Xbox doesn't want to sell them separately, they could bundle them with their remasters as a bonus.
As for my wishlist for a theoretical program update, I would like to see Midtown Madness 3, Crash TWoC, Burnout 3, blur, Call of Duty Classic, State of Emergency, PGR and many more.
The xbox emulator in xbone is actually the fusion emulator that runs on 360. It's updated with compatibility fixes for whatever game its running on

I doubt it since Microsoft has doubled down on ESG but then again they made Rumble Rose's XX Backwards Compatible.

Update - according to GameEye, Rumble Roses was only for PS2 . Rumble Roses XX was on Xbox 360, though.

I wish xbox sega would add the ports of after burner climax and Daytona usa to their backwards compatibility list
I think you can buy Daytona but you have to use the desktop Web store for some weird reason. I'm sure it has a store page on the consoles (I could be wrong about that though so don't quote me)

Would be nice if they integrated all that xbox stuff from current to previous generations...into Xbox PC. Id like to play previously Xbox console only games like 'Red Dead Redemption 1' and 'Soul Calibur 2 hd online' on a PC
I would love to see the two Naruto games by Ubisoft and Crash Twinsanity to be backwards compatible.
