    Very informative. It gives such a relief to see the pastel protected so well.

    I've always used spacers, but this looks very interesting. Plus the framer's tape is probably a cheaper option than buying spacers. Thanks Esther!

    This is so interesting as I am researching how to do my framing for pastels. I’m glad you mentioned about the humidity as I live in the tropics of Australia. Having said that it would be worth giving it a go for an experiment. I use op shop frames a lot and so have to use mat board as well. Very good information. Thank you.

    The other advantage is being able to switch frames if your patron doesn’t like the frame. Just like an oil painting being switched out. Will give it a try. However I use uv coated glass instead of plain glass.

      Yes! I now use museum glass as often as possible. It makes such a difference in how the artwork presents!

    This is just what I needed. I just painted a beautiful work on unsanded Canson MiTentes paper, using Pan pastel, then Nupastels, then some soft pastel, and it's overloaded with pastel. I was afraid to frame in a mat or with spacers, for fear of the pastel falling down. I don't want to use fixative. I will frame it this way and that should greatly help to preserve the pastel on the surface. Question for you -- Do you use non-glare glass? Or does that not matter?? Thanks so much!!

      I think it does matter, and I use either water-white anti-Reflection glass or Tru-Vue museum glass, which is even better, in my opinion. Yes, it's very expensive. But it really makes a difference preserving the brilliance of the pastel in my opinion.

    I wonder what would happen to the pastel if it were removed from the glass? Guess it is not a huge issue since you can change frames easily, but if the glass ever breaks or cracks, etc.?

      Chris, I switch out glass frequently, so I can say for certain that once the glass is lifted from the surface, you will see a little ghosting of pastel on the glass itself.
      The pastel piece is unaffected, and can be used again later. It's still fine. ☺️

    Can you use plexiglass a lot of frames use it now.

    • @estherljonesdotcomartist5505
      @estherljonesdotcomartist5505  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Due to static charge carried by plexiglass, it shouldn't be used on pastel. However, acrylic is another glazing option that is being offered.

      If I spray my oil pastel with a fixative, can I use plexiglass insert in frame.

      I am, unfortunately, completely ignorant of the care and feeding of oil pastel art, so I can't answer your question.

    so--no need for a dust cover on the back with this technique?

    • @estherljonesdotcomartist5505
      @estherljonesdotcomartist5505  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lorraine, it is sealed with the tape, so you could add one if you wanted, but it isn't necessary.

    I use your form of framing and really lie it. I am going to a art fair and don't want to frame everything. What would you suggest I do?

    • @estherljonesdotcomartist5505
      @estherljonesdotcomartist5505  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darlene, thanks for commenting! I use a foam core backing and insert the backing and painting into a crystal seal bag. These can be purchased at Jerry's Artarama or Dick Blick--I think even Amazon sells them. They will not smudge and will be well protected in these...I have several paintings that I've packaged this way and carried and to different events; they are still in very good shape.
