Just before the start of this clip, in the original show, the presenter said: "It's gone into the Top 20, and I reckon it'll go all the way to the Top 5"... Alas, not - it climbed to #14 the following week, but that was as high as it would go... It was all over the radio at the time, was very surprised it didn't reach the Top 5...
Walter Becker of Steely Dan, was a band member & producer for their biggest album “Flaunt the Imperfection” (1985). Thank him for all those hits in 1985, including this one.

Loved this song as a child when it was released and it sounds just as good now, great song! Does anyone know what this song is about, i was told it was about a puppy (SERIOUSLY) so please let me know!
I'm not really sure the song is about Man Ray the artist directly, but maybe tangentially. I've always wondered about that. The song does not address his work overtly, as far as I can tell. A song that does is R.E.M.'s "Feeling Gravity's Pull," of course, the lyrics go "it's a Man Ray kind of sky/but I'll show you what I can do with it." Etc. More of a direct allusion to some of Man Ray's surrealist photos and collages. Man Ray himself was a Jewish guy from Brooklyn originally, as it happens, who later moved to Paris and became one of the top Surrealist/DaDa artists of the 1920s etc., whilst never allowing himself to be pigeonholed in any one genre or trend.

Should of been 1
@@ZEP0034 no, nothing "should" be #1 in a chart sense, unless it sells enough copies to be (which, sadly, this song didn't)
@@DaveAndBeth1978 opinion nit much better I mean
@@ZEP0034 that's music, isn't it? It's all subjective
A beautiful song which is somehow filled with emotional yearning and wistfulness.

Are we believing
Black man ray
Are we not happy
In our own way
And we the people
Who reason why
Forever change
As time goes by
Yes, yes, I could be wrong
Why, why, should I pretend
God only knows in the end
Are we believing
The heavenly survive
Faith the future
Big life on their side
And we the people
Who can but try
Forever learn
As time goes by
Yes, yes, I could be wrong
Why, why, should I pretend
God only knows in the end
Are we believing
Black man ray
Persuasive danger
In everything you say
And we the people
Who answer you why
Forever doubt
As time goes by
Yes, yes, I could be wrong
Why, why, should I pretend
Yes, yes, I could be wrong
Why, why, should I pretend
God only knows in the end
Was at live private gig when they were makeing /recording this album. secret studio. scottish highlands.

Man Ray was an influential photographer in the early 1900s. He often used Africans as subjects.
thanks samslick

Are they allowed to sing this song in 2019? Should it not be "🎶 man of African descent Ray 🎶"?
2020 cancelled it officially.
