    Pet Shop Boys were massive in late 80s early 90s, even though they are not as commercial now, they are still very prominent on the music scene, and still produce excellent music. I love them.

      @@cappaculla They haven't written a consistently good album since Fundamental in 2006, and that was their first good album since Nightlife in 1999. They became too experimental after Very, and they quality of their output dropped. They still write the odd good pop song, but those are few and far between.

    For me this song was always about growing up as a gay man in 70s and the 80, when society still viewed it as a sin. And eventually gays themselves thought it must be sin..

    This song basically sets up Madonna's "Like a Prayer," released two years later. Tensions with religious strictures were reaching a breaking point as the gay movement and AIDS epidemic gained international attention. Pet Shop Boys are known for their lush productions during this period. Their next album "Introspective" is gorgeous - I remember being blown away the first time I heard it - so dramatic, such interesting combinations of musical instruments and dramatic buildup and flourishes on every song. But the flair for drama is definitely there in their first two albums, including this song. I think you can correctly use the term "epic" to describe their sound at this point in their long (and continuing) career. The Pet Shop Boys note that this song, and not "West End Girls" (a number one hit around the world), has become the fan favorite over the years. But they have so many great songs. I love the camp aspect of this video - everything seems stately, decorous, processional, restrained, but then a tongue sneaks out lasciviously, a stare turns leering, a riding crop becomes a fetish. They show that there's this eroticism beneath the monastic robes peaking through at all times, which is quite humorous. Today, we talk about "shaming" all the time, as a bad thing. There's slut shaming, weight shaming, etc., but this song is about an original shame orchestrated and endorsed by the Catholic Church: gay shaming.

  • @chrisboot2468
    @chrisboot2468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Neil Tennant has said in interviews that this song is to do with him coming to terms with his homosexuality.
    The extra figures appearing (green woman, gold man etc.) are representations of the Seven Deadly Sins - Greed, Gluttony, Pride. Anger, Lust, etc.

    • @timebandito4278

      I always thought this song was about religious frustration...probably because that is what I've experienced all my life and how I connect with this song. I've felt like this most of my life.

  • @tommymarx391
    @tommymarx391 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    For me, this was always about being shamed for being gay. The Pet Shop Boys had a couple other songs that reflected the themes of the song. One, "This Must Be The Place I Waited Years To Leave", again deals with religious tyranny and persecution, and has one of my favorite lines: "I'm listening to the words I thought I'd never hear again
    , a litany of saints and other ordinary men." Then there's "To Speak Is A Sin", which adresses the gay bar scene, especially for older men, where you're never "supposed" to just start a conversation with someone else, you first have to glance, stare, then possibly smile as an invite, LOL. The Pet Shop Boys has one of the best libraries of songs of any Eighties artists, and as others have mentioned, they still make great music.

      @@Neonstrobelight100 This was written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe during sessions for their first album, Please, in 1986. The duo was going to offer it to Madonna or Hi-NRG singer Hazell Dean, but they eventually decided to record it themselves. It was originally called "Heartbeat," but the title was altered because Culture Club's Jon Moss had just started a band called Heartbeat UK. Chris Lowe was unenthuastic about the song's potential, so Neil Tennant reworked the chord structure with producer Andy Richards and it landed on Pet Shop Boys' second album, Actually.

    I have watched a few of these "Reaction" videos from a few different young TH-camrs such as yourself. I am in my late 40s and the ONLY reason why I have watched some of these videos that's popped up in my recommendations is because I'm literally looking for insults and disrespectful comments about the best era in music in my lifetime. I literally come here hoping for a chance to start an argument and to defend my childhood... lol... But, what I've gotten so far from what few of these "reaction" videos I've watched from your generation is heartwarming and makes me proud! You're keeping the greats alive and that deserves respect in itself. And the fact that you do your homework and history on these artists for these videos deserves major respect.
    But, I am curious.... Why do you do these Reaction Videos? Was it because of how amazingly well you were apparently raised or is it something else? Personally, I think it's because your generation has been cheated out of experiencing your own generation of talent in the music industry... I'm old enough to see that the music industry alone has deteriorated at a rapid rate over the past 20 years... I have two sons your age and I raised them up on 60s, 70s, and mainly 80s and early 90s music. In return, they have introduced me to some of the what I would consider talented artists today... 21 Pilots, Charlie Puth, Sam Smith, and a few others.. Your generation does have a few, but not even close to the music industry we had and could brag about 25 plus years ago. Hence, your "Reaction Videos."
    Just a little tip if I may.. Sometimes while listening to 80s music, you just need to close your eyes and listen.. Although I am also a huge fan of the very creative music videos, sometimes I also got more out of music just by closing my eyes and listening. The music video can consume your attention away from the meaning of the song.
    I think I speak for all of the TRUE 80s kids nowadays when I can respectfully say, Thank you! Keep up this great work you're doing.

    Inquisición, Torquemada.... It's a sin. Cuántos "Torquemadas" quedan hoy día? Cuántos sistemas inquisitoriales hay?. La lista es larguiiiisssimaa.. La lucha sigue tan vigente casi como en la época del "torque'.

    Heart, I want to wake up, So hard. To name a few.I can go on and on. Pet shop boys were never really promoted much here in the U.S. on the radio.Dance clubs, alternative music clubs and of course gay clubs had everyone dancing. Did you hear me coming? Is another masterpiece. Just my 2 cents. Good day.

    A lot of symbolism on the viedo:
    - The idea of the video comes from the Spanish Inquisition with its leader Torquemada
    - It reflects the Seven Deadly Sins: gluttony, lust, greed, pride, wrath, envy and sloth
    - The final part of the song Neils is reciting a part of the Confiteor in Latin and you can listen a choir in the background. Some sounds were recorded at locations such as Westminster Cathedral
    PSB has many hits, I hope you give a chance to more PSB songs, they are great.
    I recommend to you this:
