I'm a millennial who enjoys watching short videos on his phone. I did that when I took public transports daily prior to forced teleworking. I still do this in my bed before sleeping or when I don't get up as soon as I wake up. (Sorry guy from @Some More News, but you were totally off the mark in your rant about that part of the formula.) So, I could have been a Quibi user if I didn't discover that yesterday while watching videos about its failure. However, the pricing would have been a big no for me. Paying for a streaming service and having ads? Really? On the Internet, you pay or you get ads, not both. Also, the without-ad price sounds too high for short content, even if this is way more produced than TH-cam content. It would have work for me if it had been integrated into another streaming service. It would have been the "quibi" section on Netflix, Amazon Prime or local service. The turnstyle technology would have been a specificity of that section, not the flagship of a whole service. Within the years, they would have found a nice use of that turnstyle thing or simply drop off. I think Quibi as a stand-alone service was a lethal mistake. Being part of something bigger and already established would have given them the leeway to experiment and take their time to craft some stuff. Another obvious problem is how much all of that was forced. That's like the Google+ of streaming services, but worse since they put so much money in that. Speaking of money. That was a really bad idea to take nearly 2 billion dollars to target only one generation of viewers. They should have gone generalistic. My father would have been a perfect viewer for that remake of The Fugitive series. He grew up with that show and enjoyed the 90's move with Harrison Ford. He would have liked to watch that on his laptop before going to bed. But as you pointed out, @Computer Clan, laptop ≠ turnstyle technology. The biggest thing you need to do when launching a service is get the right name. It has to work as a noun and a verb, the most famous example of this is Google. It's also the reason Bing is such a failure, "Hey, let's Bing the nearest restaurant", see? It doesn't work.
Yes, but also "rich people thinks he understands ordinary people". They were selling this as short films to watch while commuting. Commuting is not a short experience. I wish I'd ever had a ten minute commute compared to the years of my life I've spent on trains and buses getting to and from work.

The Turnstyle technology actually sound interesting. I hope in the future they can resolve such legal issue, and can rebirth it on their or other platforms, therefor I can try it by myself.
An example of a bunch of big executives (Whitman, Katzenberg) thinking that if you build it they will come. They didn't come. Who would pay that money to watch only short form videos and only on mobile when TH-cam is there for free?? TH-cam has tons of short form content and lots of original content. It doesn't make sense.
I've heard these kind of things a lot. It's probably the "stardom" of certain managers, ceo's etc. that helps them a lot. I heard exactly this when someone started a VR company like 5-some years ago and when they needed some investment, they took too much and managers from Disney et al. swooped in and the company went into the ground because of a lot of expenses on ads, name changes and other crap. It amazes me how these kind of actions are legal and "just fine" apparently. Very sad stuff sometimes.
Personally, ever since hearing about Turnstyle, I thought that watching a show in landscape on one monitor and portrait on the second monitor simultaneously would be real interesting, and would probably also be the only example I can think of where VLCs "video track" selection would make any sense lol But I can absolutely see this tech evolving to watching the show on your TV, and having an optional "companion" view on your phone. That'd also solve the (maybe non-)issue of being able to only watch one camera shot at a time, depending on how you're holding your phone.
Quibi seemed on paper like a good idea, just the timing, how they did it and many other factors really shot them in the foot. Like you said we will see another iteration pop up sooner or later.
Already seeing a bunch of similar products, but this time focused on skills, documentaries and non-fiction mostly. Streaming entertainment is saturated.
If you confuse . . . Makes me think of Google’s gaming platform. I knew it existed from commercials, but didn’t understand what it was until watching a video about it’s discontinuation.
Ngl new Reno 911 episodes tempted me but when I found out it was a paid super short video subscription service I knew it wouldn’t last But damn it was very short
Quibi failed because the heads had unrealistic expectations. Everything was fine with the whole concept. But they expected it to be an instant hit. No streaming service has ever been an instant hit in the first year. They should have budgeted for it to last at least 2 years without folding. That, or it was a huge investment scam to say “hey, at least I tried... right guys?”.
Ooh, I like failed stories like that, they're almost always fascinating because it takes something to fail so violently and take so much money down with you.
Quibi was also targeted at young people. Young people don’t care about Hollywood anymore, which is the biggest reason why it failed. The Roku Channel (streaming app) actually picked up Quibi’s lineup, but I noticed that it was all rated TV-MA (which is equal to an R-rated movie), meaning that Quibi was losing some market that way too.
I'm not sure if you missed the TH-cam ads during this time, which is something that I found to be impossible, but they answered exactly what Quibi is. However, they did not answer the question of why I would want to watch--specifically what kind of content they would carry.
If they had it work on desktop and spent money on informative advertising they may have succeeded. They should’ve also posted their pilot episodes on TH-cam
I'm glad to have played a major role in the making of this episode-it was fun researching the history of this failed streaming service, something I thought Krazy Ken could cover! Here are a few other interesting facts about Quibi that weren't mentioned in this episode: 1. There were 3 types of Quibi programming available: Movies in Chapters, Shows in Episodic Nature (didn't have a continuing story), and Daily Essentials, which were usually 5-6 minute long "quick bites" that focused on lifestyle and news. 2. There were reboots of backlog content made specifically for Quibi: Season 7 of Comedy Central's Reno 911! and Season 11 of MTV's Punk'd. There were more planned, including a reboot of the Nickelodeon game show Legends of the Hidden Temple. 3. One of the planned original scripted shows for Quibi, Steven Spielberg's horror series After Dark, was going to be made so you could only watch it after sunset. 4. As of May 20th, 2021, all of Quibi's content have been re-released by Roku for free (with ads) through The Roku Channel as "Roku Originals", so at least the former Quibi originals will get a second chance. Also, on a side note regarding Meg Whitman: In November of 2015, the original Hewlett-Packard was split into two-the enterprise segment was spun-off as a separate company called Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (where Whitman retained CEO position) and the original Hewlett-Packard was renamed to HP Inc. (where Whitman remained on the board of directors.)
One important thing not emphasized is the $4.99/month WITH ADS subscription. That's a kill in itself. It should've been FREE! TH-cam and Spotify both do this. This gets more users on board, which can either bring more ad revenue, or more subscriptions for those willing to pay and want it commercial-free.
The biggest problem was the turnstile thing. It's a bizarre distraction for users, designers, directors, actors, cameramen, editors, encoding strategy, testing, acceptance trials, marketing and even word-of-mouth description. It was some arrogant founder's baby and they didn't have the vision or humility to drop it.
I agree! It's one of those things that is fun the first 5 minutes you try it, and after that its just annoying. Sounds like a good idea but it really is not.
Honestly if they went the Apple TV route and give their userbase a year long free trial (even with ads) I think they would have been able to draw in a more sizable audience. Clever, concise, and consumable content with a consistently commendable production values could be pretty class.
The biggest mystery is how it somehow cost 1.7 billion dollars to make an app and a few 10 minute episodes of a couple dozen shows. Sounds like a few people were seriously overpaid. Regular people design apps every day. Granted they might not be as complex, but seriously. Look at the app store. Tens of thousands of apps, many of them made by regular people at home. $1.7 billion dollars? Clearly a few people just had obscene amounts of money thrown at them. Even considering advertising. Hundreds of thousands of companies advertise every day, and it doesn't cost them a billion dollars to do it. Clearly a few people somewhere walked away with a huge chunk of change..
In a world of so many advancements like we’re seeing these days, I’m more interested in that sort of content rather than what once was... Just my opinion for show topics. Keep up the great channel Crazy Ken!
I feel like this tech and concept could work on the future... but as an add-on to an excising service not its own separate thing. This service was too niche and weird on its own but if its added as a feature in Netflix or Disney+ i bet people would love it.
While I understand they had a few powerhouse big shots beyond this I still cant fathom how they were able to raise 1.75 billion on such questionable idea/product.
The same way all the crypto and NFT scams get bilions of dollars. People investing their real life money for the dream of getting even more money out of this ämazing", "new" idea.
I got a promo to Quibi in 2020. Honestly I didnt end up watching it after the initial "wow look at this" factor wore off. I think they could have really had something cool if they made the content a little longer, say 10-25 min long videos. And if they allowed streaming on your TV for the main video content and all the "turn style" additional content could be accessed via your phone or tablet. That would have been ground breaking. Being able to see side content on your mobile while watching the main video on your tv.
I would say advertising was not good enough. The time was perfect, most people are bored/not concentrated while "working" from home and look a lot of stuff off their phones. They should have started with 6 months free or something like that. With good adertising I feel that this could have actually worked
One of the first things I though of back at the beginning of this vid was the Zune Pass lol! And he mentions it near the end. Talk about just bad timing. But either way, the iPod was doing phenomenal in sales and MS was just a few years ahead of themselves and marketed the product and service poorly. They truly brought us something that we didn't know we needed, but the majority of people just didn't get it back then. I loved it though, and I was kinda bummed out when they announced it was over.
I work for a company based in NYC I’m the IT director I was cleaning out a building we own and I found thinkpads with thr quibi logo on them I’m pretty sure they rented out our building I didn’t have a chance to power them on but I plan too
Quibi had potential.... it just didn't have enough stuff yet and not enough time... plus, the people behind it needed to be willing to lose money for a while for it to work...
I don’t know why they didn’t call them short films? We all know what short films are. I think they could have sold it as a step for new coming filmmakers that jump to big screen. But they somehow stayed away from the word “short film” and that made things more confusing!
Gotta be honest, I really like the idea of a show where you can tilt your phone and interact with it, like that one with the guy where you could see his phone screen. I think if this had come out around the same time as Netflix's streaming service, it would have stood a better chance because it would have stood out from Netflix looked more attractive, plus there were more people on buses and trains.
Had there not been a pandemic this year, I think Quibi could have been a bit successful. I think the Achille's heel it had aside from not only launching during a pandemic was the fact that at launch you couldn't watch on more than just a phone. Sure, that was the whole grab of it, but why couldn't they have offered that option to those who wanted to watch something quick while being able to relax at home while doing so? Had they've done that right away, they could have made almost a killing!
Great content as always! I was actually excited when I discovered Quibi and the short shows but then I forgot to open the App for a few months and then It shut down! I didn’t even know till I saw your video. Shame. But as you say, goes to show you can have all the money in the world but if it’s not the right idea or it’s executed wrong or it’s just wrong place wrong time it ain’t gonna work!
In the like first 6 seconds I was legit like wait: "Wait, Do I have to turm my TV 90 degrees to the left or right to view it?" while still seeing that 1) Its not in Full Screen mode, and 2) My TV wont be able to do that! And when you made it goto landscape mode, that's when reality sittled in!

@@KeynimationBySavvySage YO! I appreciate you so much, remember that time you saved my ass because I couldn’t move stuff on my macs desktop? That’s me, your awesome
Can you please see if www.fitnessupro.com a scam or real because I don’t know if it is?
no.
I already saw that it's Half-Life 2. I love Half Life/HL2 and Portal/P2!
Also, the event's being hosted on my birthday. I'm gonna watch it regardless.
Also, I saw that person who set their notification sound to "You A**hole!" hilarious!
The biggest thing you need to do when launching a service is get the right name. It has to work as a noun and a verb, the most famous example of this is Google. It's also the reason Bing is such a failure, "Hey, let's Bing the nearest restaurant", see? It doesn't work.
A classic case of "local boomer says he finally understand zoomers, and he'll make a fortune from it"
can you explain?
Yes, but also "rich people thinks he understands ordinary people". They were selling this as short films to watch while commuting. Commuting is not a short experience. I wish I'd ever had a ten minute commute compared to the years of my life I've spent on trains and buses getting to and from work.
@@ian_b as someone that was born in São Paulo I feel your pain, bro.
well, you realize it's the boomers who are dictating what mills and zoomers do and think, right? i mean, they may get it wrong now and then, but by and large it's dudes in my age bracket operating these idiot kids like the meat puppets they are... and profiting highly from them.
@@manlymcstud8588 bro you need to smoke _waaaaay_ more weed. Maybe do some shrooms and/or acid, too. If you’re that hostile towards younger people, something’s gone very wrong with your mind, and consciousness expanding substances are the solution… as the Greatest Generation (who are far better and wiser than you boomers, it’s literally in the name) discovered before you were even born.
The idea for testing bullshit or fake products for a TH-cam channel is genius. There’s literally a billion bullshit products out there. The content is endless. I like this channel.
OH MY GOSH, THE ADS! THEY DROVE ME CRAZY!
Quick story here
I had a problem with my Mac, I couldn’t move anything on my desktop and I couldn’t find any fix for it on the web, so out of desperation I went to discord, I asked sage for help and they really saved my ass, sage is great
i can't tell you how much i expected this to be another addition to the google graveyard, but i guess they had their hands full with stadia at the time.
That turn style video playback would be great for ARG's
i am a former quibi user and it was actually really good! i was really sad to see it go but i got my 4.90 back fr november
Why did it fail? Because everyone forgot about it in a Quibi.
that's so bad jesus
@@arandomstreetcat lol
Personally, ever since hearing about Turnstyle, I thought that watching a show in landscape on one monitor and portrait on the second monitor simultaneously would be real interesting, and would probably also be the only example I can think of where VLCs "video track" selection would make any sense lol
But I can absolutely see this tech evolving to watching the show on your TV, and having an optional "companion" view on your phone.
Quibi is a great Ted Talk on making every possible bad choice when running a company.
At least everything can be a learning experience… on the bright side. 😅
Starting with taking loads of venture capital.
Watching this (high quality content) video was the first time I heard or saw anything related to Quibi, thanks for sharing!
0:07 reminds me of the "Unbox your phone" Samsung S8 Commercials
I remember when I was seeing ads everywhere from youtube to Instagram about the app.
If you confuse . . . Makes me think of Google’s gaming platform. I knew it existed from commercials, but didn’t understand what it was until watching a video about it’s discontinuation.
Ngl new Reno 911 episodes tempted me but when I found out it was a paid super short video subscription service I knew it wouldn’t last
But damn it was very short
Until now, I've never heard of of this, strangely emough.
Youre one of the lucky ones
@@JointedSpagel I'm also one of them
They put ads up? I never heard of them. I guess my AdBlock works perfectly.
Some Quibi shows like Dummy were definitely not targeted at kids.
I noticed that when discussing Quibi's review rating, it was (checks notes)... 4.6.
Not gonna lie I never heard of this, and I thought this was gonna be that DVR that was everywhere around 2010
Geez Quibi's rise and fall sounds like something out of the internet bubble era. Lol
The Computer Clan, the webpage it is not online anymore of these moments.
What time will you come back?

I'm not sure if you missed the TH-cam ads during this time, which is something that I found to be impossible, but they answered exactly what Quibi is. However, they did not answer the question of why I would want to watch--specifically what kind of content they would carry.
If they had it work on desktop and spent money on informative advertising they may have succeeded. They should’ve also posted their pilot episodes on TH-cam
I'm glad to have played a major role in the making of this episode-it was fun researching the history of this failed streaming service, something I thought Krazy Ken could cover!
Here are a few other interesting facts about Quibi that weren't mentioned in this episode:
Sounds like a good idea but it really is not.
i love the callback to Spoof OS in the "Pandemic Inc." scene; remember those Windows CE videos, fun times
I kind of get Quibi's purpose now. Thank you crazy Ken
I never heard about this until it already shut down. Didn’t hear about it even once. But I feel really good about that.
I remember seeing Quibi, my reaction was "Why?".
In a world of so many advancements like we’re seeing these days, I’m more interested in that sort of content rather than what once was... Just my opinion for show topics. Keep up the great channel Crazy Ken!
Let's just hope Pandemic Inc. doesn't release CovidOS version 20, or the FluPhone
Here's hoping it goes the way of the Quibi… I-I mean the dodo.🤞

Quibi sounded like a euphemism for going to go take a shit. "I gotta go take a quibi! I'll be right back."
I used it & I liked it. I think if they put it on Roku & the other streaming boxes, they would've done better.
As for my experience, I saw so many ads but I only thought it was another normal streaming service with seemingly subpar movies
I first heard about quibi when they announced they were closing it
Thanks Ken! Your channel brightens my day, I LOVE tech.
I feel like this tech and concept could work on the future... but as an add-on to an excising service not its own separate thing. This service was too niche and weird on its own but if its added as a feature in Netflix or Disney+ i bet people would love it.
50 States of fear was pretty fun. Granted, I didn't watch it on quibi, but still, would love to see more of it
Great idea, amazing concept. Just some bad luck and bad choices
Stupid shows, too short, seemed like all intro recap outro, and then there were ads, plus the gimmick of turnstile was very meh
What is intro recap outro
@@papasscooperiaworker3649 meaning introduction of the show (beginning credits) a recap of previous episode, the ending credits
I have just recently discovered your channel. I find it quite informative and very entertaining
That aspect ratio joke at the beginning was really good

Cool to see he might be a Rammstein fan
yeah, the Windows 10 version of netflix blocks screenshots too, so far the only way i know of to get a screenshot is by using the browser version
I would say advertising was not good enough. The time was perfect, most people are bored/not concentrated while "working" from home and look a lot of stuff off their phones. They should have started with 6 months free or something like that. With good adertising I feel that this could have actually worked
What I found amusing about Quibi was I never saw any ads for it. I only heard about it from people that were confused by the ads.
6:26 gotta love how they use aggretsuko as the sample video
I work for a company based in NYC I’m the IT director I was cleaning out a building we own and I found thinkpads with thr quibi logo on them I’m pretty sure they rented out our building I didn’t have a chance to power them on but I plan too
i remember the icon from somewhere but i dont know where. i dont think it WAS quibi.
Same, maybe the iPad Air
Quibi had potential.... it just didn't have enough stuff yet and not enough time... plus, the people behind it needed to be willing to lose money for a while for it to work...
I don’t know why they didn’t call them short films?
We all know what short films are.
I think they could have sold it as a step for new coming filmmakers that jump to big screen.
But they somehow stayed away from the word “short film” and that made things more confusing!
4.6 rating on app store . Me: My scam detector is tingling
Just saw this video and had a chuckle when it shows a reviews/ratings of this service at... 4.6. 😂
7:19 CoviDOS 19.0 "With Internet Exploder"....That's great, I laughed too much at that.
Woo! : D
I just found you today. Interesting stuff. And I love your taste in end music!
They should just release there shows via youtube, they will get some money back through ads.
I remember when you *could* screenshot Netflix on iPhones! 😢
The fact that they were charging 5 buck for it with ads for 10 minute or less clips is so dumb cause I'd rather just hop on TH-cam and do it for free
couldnt help but notice strfkr in your music library, u have good taste
Great content as always! I was actually excited when I discovered Quibi and the short shows but then I forgot to open the App for a few months and then It shut down! I didn’t even know till I saw your video. Shame. But as you say, goes to show you can have all the money in the world but if it’s not the right idea or it’s executed wrong or it’s just wrong place wrong time it ain’t gonna work!
"If you confuse, you lose" litteraly the Nintendo Wii U
I was watching the lit mobile follow up and was amused by the fact that the opening ad was for the charger that he had previously debunked.
