Just wanted to tell y’all how much we enjoy your videos. My husband is 77 years young and knows about everything about old motors. He watches you for hours since he has trouble getting around. Thanks, John and Gwen Dixon in Florida.
i just rescued a s1754, dt466 and spicer 5 speed looking exactly like what you have there. mine has the bosh mv inline pump though. much better pump. its also the higher end 210hp like you showed there. 1986 model truck. sat in a field since 2007. drained the fuel. checked the other fluids. added clean fuel. fired right up and drove it onto the trailer to make the 400 mile trip home. ran 2 cans of engine restore thru it to clean up any stuck seals and rings. change the oil after 20 hours of running on the restore. truck runs and drives like new. just needing tires, rear fenders and lights to get it on the road and back in service... gotta love these old diesels for that as a gas engine would be done for
That is a very sweet, healthy-sounding engine. What a bargain at $500, you can fix your power steering and you've got an entire spare engine for free, you certainly can't argue with that...
I had a friend down in logging country in Southwest Washington State who had a DT 466 in a one ton 4x4 Ford Pickup truck. You could hear that thing screamin' into town from a mile away!!
Good going there Fellow Tarheel! The 466's are tough as woodpecker lips. Just screaming all day and just keep going. I've worked them in 150 loaders and TD-15 dozers and tandem trucks BUT I found out that with the big old pulley on the belt drive steering pump you BEST keep that thing wound up or you have NO steering when you need it most. The truck had a 13-under so keeping it wound was no problem. Yep, get the old 3/4 wrench out and start cracking fittings and get the air out. Good engine for something that needs it.
Like my dad used to do, if he smelled a deal on an engine same or similiar to what he was running in his truck, he grabbed it and fire it up, stockpile in the shop "in case" , he hated being in a jam stuck. actually proved sound idea a few times. Great video !!!! And you should have your title changed to "mechanical magician " !!!
Not really magic. just ensuring an engine can turn, has a starter to turn it, has fire, fuel, and air. they'll start right up if they have those three things, plus a way to turn over. (Fire in a diesel is made by compression Instead of spark.)
man i don't know why but i enjoy your videos so much. My father is a mechanic I'm a Registered Nurse but I'm always working with my car and bikes so i guess I have this in my blood. I believe you like challenges like this thanks for entertaining us with this great videos. Blessings my friend.
Nice that you have a back up engine for your rig. That Bendix vacuum pump seems kinda rare... pricey too. I took a look and a retail parts place that I checked wanted $800 for one. Saw a couple on ebay NOS for $300~$400. Since it's something you don't use on your truck, you might use it to make a belt driven high volume vacuum pump... though I wouldn't know how you'd oil it, so there's that.
I had a DT466...geared right they can roll down the road quite well...most were made for city, but mine had a 5 spd o/d with a single speed axle for hwy use...I sold it with 500,000 miles and it was a great truck for years after for the next guy...
the truck im building has 5 speed spicer, direct non od, im installing a newer model rear axle for better brakes and the 3.36 final drive. truck will run 295/75/22.5 tires and will be right at 1850 rpm in 5th at 65mph. and 2350 rpm in 4th at 65mph. making it perfect for hwy use. gives you a good cruise rpm and the available downshift at cruise speed. this will be the only truck ive personally seen with a hwy gear set up on a mechanical dt466. i just dont think any engine likes to run on the governor at all times. im betting i get great unloaded mpg like this as well
Those dang pine needles get everywhere you don't want them to. I had to put a gutter helmet system on my house because the wind kept blowing them off the tops of a few loblollys in the back yard. Beetles and the 2001 storm did some damage to them.
Air and fuel why have we made motors so difficult now days , I know EPA has to do with it but what a great time for engines pre 93 . Sounds great for sitting so long .
also I have been seeing these dt466 dropped down into pickups . they make adapter plate to bolt that engine rite up to your factory transmission. ide love to get my hands on a dt466
i would never bolt any pickup trans to a dt466. hell i wont ever again bolt a pickup trans to a 12v cummins. gotta go bigger if you want the trans to last as long as the engine while actually being worked.
Best way to save that engine now- change oil & all filters, fix that fuel line, hook it to a 20 gallon tank of diesel with cleaner mix, change coolant- then run it till the fuel is gone. I know you know all this Jonathan- I'm just talkin.
the shifter balls at the end of the stick wear thin and then it allows it to jump into neutral and revers at the same time easy fix though just replace the part at the shift tower
out of all your videos when you said we. how you always talk like you have help. I finally seen someone with you. other than the one day Rat Rod builds. I'm just sayin 👍 FINS UP 👍
Been thinking about putting a DT466 in my Kodiak. It has a 5.9 24 valve cumming in it now. But just not enough motor when grossing 30,000 lbs. Need to find out the size of the 466 compared to the 5.9. That or just throw a 8.3 cummins in it. Also had a Allison 1000 6 speed trans in it also.
The whole story about out-of-state scrappers wanting to cut up the whole truck but leave the engine sounds pretty mysterious. Your imagination could really go wild.
Ihc made a 9 litre v8 diesil for school bus and municipal trucks. Big clunky loud motors. Like a Cummins 903v8. The 466 much better smoother motor. The 466e heui had a lot of issues. The 7.3 psd is the 444 e are Good motors. Stay away from ford 6.0 psd disasters . Navistar is the only truck left owned and made in America today. Crazy.
The 365 v8's were terrible engines, went threw a lot of EGR coolers and turbos, hated working on them. Front covers also leaked and it was very hard to make time on them.
Yeah but 6.0's make a hell of a lot more power Better fuel mileage And if you do the right things and take care of it I've seen many of them go a million miles
That forklift never ceases to amaze me. Them are 6 foot forks and that engine was about 5 foot out. Should have flipped, must be in a high gravity zone LOL.
Was it International that made a big n/a diesel V8 around that time? It seems like it was our old IH school buses that were smoky and had a loud "growl" to them. All the others, not so much.
They made one but when I don't know. I wallered one around in an old Cob Popper with a 5X4 and a 7 1/2 yard chain drive Rex mixer on it with a blasted STRAIGHT pipe. That was years ago and I can STILL hear it! Also made a V-8 to go in the 250 track loaders. Don't know if they had a blower or not but they HAD the power!
I like a DT466 I'd like to find an older model with a manual fuel system and put it in a pickup I seen where somebody put a Cummins 8.3 in a Ford I'd like to give that 466 a try
Jonathan W I know it's not something that you would want to make a daily driver out of but I've actually seen 3208 cat with an Allison automatic in an F250 just for fun
Kevin Hornbuckle . I know it's not the best choice if you're going to try to use it as a driver but I seen someone put 3208 cat with an Allison an F250 just for fun
When I worked at a plastics plant, I would run 21 and stop in at least once a day until 90 or so. Would have LOVED to have had that old International pickup in the old garage section of the store or the model T in the barn!
I sure loved that place when I was a kid. He was a blacksmith from way back. My great grandpa was a lock master on the little kanawha. His name was Levega Mcclung or as most know him as LL Mcclung, he holds the West Virginia State flathead record. I fished a lot at the Belleville lock and dam.
My grandpa Amos had him make a few things and fix a few things for the farm. It was a dairy farm up until the Mud sixties. I remember sitting on a bench in the dairy side and watch the cows come in and get hooked up.
I love it when you bring that old iron to life. That IH sounded pretty good when it fired. I was wondering if the fuel shutoff was giving you some problems when it cranked for so long. What part of West Virginia are you from? My family mainly comes from the Parkersburg/Belleville area of Wood County.
Great engine's I have been running them for 30 years or so in all my spreader trucks they are easy to rebuild and don't take a brain scientist to work on them unlike the max force there a piece of shit
Hey Jonathan, Being that I was raised it the most northern part of Idaho there are phrases that I come by that people say and since there is no dumb question .... what is a dirt dobber ? I think that is what you said was in the turbo ???
They are bees that look like a wasp that build a nest out of mud, almost like concrete. If I had started it and it broke up and pulled it into the engine, it would have damaged the cylinders for sure,
Mr. Jonathan I liked this video but I have on question. Are you still running your fork lift on that motor cycle gas tank that was on it when you bought it?
Yes I am!! I have a set of mounts for a propane tank that will be a gas tank disguised as a propane tank. The original gas tank is made as part of the frame and it's bad.
Just wanted to tell y’all how much we enjoy your videos. My husband is 77 years young and knows about everything about old motors. He watches you for hours since he has trouble getting around. Thanks, John and Gwen Dixon in Florida.
Tell John that I appreciate him taking the time to watch!

sweet sounding engine for sitting 8 years.
those are good ol engines. i just took a dt 360 out of our rollback and put one of those in.the conversion was easy
I had a friend down in logging country in Southwest Washington State who had a DT 466 in a one ton 4x4 Ford Pickup truck. You could hear that thing screamin' into town from a mile away!!
I use to plow snow on the interstate and hauled a lot of materials with DT 466's. Bullet proof engines.
Great video Jonathan.. Country boy havin a good time.!
I smell a diesel rat rod build in the future.
Good going there Fellow Tarheel! The 466's are tough as woodpecker lips. Just screaming all day and just keep going. DT466 were great engines, anyways the mechanical 466 make big horsepower!👍
They wanted $500 for the replacement gear drive power steering pump. I gave $500 for the engine with everything on it.
That's a steal. Looks like a good DT466 runs about $2-3K in my area...
I just scored a 95 DT466+MT653 Allison 5 speed for 1200
Not really magic. just ensuring an engine can turn, has a starter to turn it, has fire, fuel, and air. they'll start right up if they have those three things, plus a way to turn over. (Fire in a diesel is made by compression Instead of spark.)
Thanks for the update on the 4 wheel wrecker, thought I miss the build
Great video John! I love video's like this. Greatest regards and best of luck to you and keep video's like this coming.
Yeah! Ticking over like a sewing machine. Congrats on bringing another good old engine back to life.
man i don't know why but i enjoy your videos so much. My father is a mechanic I'm a Registered Nurse but I'm always working with my car and bikes so i guess I have this in my blood. I believe you like challenges like this thanks for entertaining us with this great videos. Blessings my friend.
I've got 466 engines in my 3 tandem spud trucks, great motors!
Sounds sweet for being sat so long.
Now that is a sweet running Engine

Nice running engine. Keep it.
Pulls another one out of the hat!! The DT466 engine runs great, just hangin on a chain!!
Yep cant beat a strong running engine that's for sure. Cant beat getting a whole engine for $500. Great work getting it started.
sounds like a good motor. Always nice to have a spare.
I have a DT466 in a medium duty cabover, Allison auto. It's very reliable.
I had a DT466...geared right they can roll down the road quite well...most were made for city, but mine
had a 5 spd o/d with a single speed axle for hwy use...I sold it with 500,000 miles and it was a great truck

Your videos are fun to watch.
Jonathan, u and your sons videos r absolutely awesome! i really like the rat rods...keep up the good work!
👍👌👏 Runs and sounds fantastic! Congrats!
Best regards luck and health.
that is a lovely sounding engine
Hmm! Makes me bout tempted to put one of them in my 89 F-350 Crew Cab Dually instead of a Cummins.
Sweet sound of those IH diesels, really a nice power unit.
Reg Sparkes except its not an IH engine, its a Detroit 466
As long as she can crank, she can run. I'd love to have a DT466...I got something she'll fit in...
Aloha
Might want to make a video of throwing a new set of rings in the old fork lift there brother :-)
good sounding engine Johnathon!
That motor would be excellent in a rat rod Jonathan!
Them old mechanical dt’s are the best engines international ever made.
Those dang pine needles get everywhere you don't want them to. I had to put a gutter helmet system on my house because the wind kept blowing them off the tops of a few loblollys in the back yard. Beetles and the 2001 storm did some damage to them.
Great stuff. I do enjoy these videos.
That would make a good power unit for something a sawmill maybe
Air and fuel why have we made motors so difficult now days , I know EPA has to do with it but what a great time for engines pre 93 . Sounds great for sitting so long .
I agree, worlds done went and gone stupid!!
ANY ADVICE ON STARTING MY DV550
1977 4X4 LOADSTAR DUMP TRUCK
VERY!
EPA has everything to do with killing Diesel engine reliability all for nothing.
That vee shaped block you got from the junk man is called a surface gage. It's used on a granite surface plate.
perfect engine for that d truck in the back!
that was about all that well worn forklift wanted
You got the well worn part right!!! Good part is it don't have enough power to get stuck, so if I rebuild the engine I may regret it.
Boy that engine sounds good.... John D.
also I have been seeing these dt466 dropped down into pickups . they make adapter plate to bolt that engine rite up to your factory transmission. ide love to get my hands on a dt466

Dang that runs nice.
hell yea pard that's a sweet find man good Ole cornbinder power love it!
Had an 81 paystar with a 466 in it, it was gutless, but always started.
Best way to save that engine now- change oil & all filters, fix that fuel line, hook it to a 20 gallon tank of diesel with cleaner mix, change coolant- then run it till the fuel is gone. I know you know all this Jonathan- I'm just talkin.
Love to have that ol 73 step side dodge
the shifter balls at the end of the stick wear thin and then it allows it to jump into neutral and revers at the same time easy fix though just replace the part at the shift tower
out of all your videos when you said we. how you always talk like you have help. I finally seen someone with you. other than the one day Rat Rod builds. I'm just sayin 👍 FINS UP 👍
That a neighbor, he stops by to mess around a couple times a week.
as much as you can get done wile you are resting you don't need any help. unless you have to be in two places at the same time
Put that motor in the old red and white international
Well you got a good deal on that Johnboy glad you found one for your wrecker.
Wish I had this in my 2011 with all its emissions problems.
good engine... many uses
Sweet as a nut! You're like a horse whisperer for engines - an engine whisperer.
They wanted to scrap the entire truck but the owner wanted to keep the engine
Put that engine in the 61 international
Ihc made a 9 litre v8 diesil for school bus and municipal trucks. Big clunky loud motors. Like a Cummins 903v8. The 466 much better smoother motor. The 466e heui had a lot of issues. Gave that forklift a workout. Lol - nice work.
That forklift never ceases to amaze me. Them are 6 foot forks and that engine was about 5 foot out. Should have flipped, must be in a high gravity zone LOL.
That's one sweet sounding engine, be a shame not to make use of it in some way shape or form.

TheSpazModic I think most old v8 school busses were probably 3208 cats.
The Army ad some that were LOUD but I have no idea what they were running. This was in the 70's at Bragg.
a lot of those old IH Buses had 9L IDI v8's
international had the 444 v8 around that time
Sounds healthy.
Now that is a deal! I love a deal $$$
great job ..will change your name to the magician 😊👍
looks like a Christmas tree. :)
I guess it just wants to live.
wow I'd love to have that motor to put in my 1985 s1700 to replace the 9.0 v8
runs good
thought i seen some dripping behind the turbo while trying to start
@crystal fyst I saw something back there too. I figured it was an exhaust leak.
Gotta get ALL the air out
Could build a serious Doodle Bug with that & the 2 spd rear that came with thart pkg.
Sweet. You could put a glass of water on top of the engine and not spill nary a drop.
TFS
I like a DT466 I'd like to find an older model with a manual fuel system and put it in a pickup I seen where somebody put a Cummins 8.3 in a Ford I'd like to give that 466 a try
It's too heavy for a pickup truck.
Not if you replace the oil with helium.
I seen a F250 with a DT466 on the net somewhere
Hmmmm.....Our farm was 5 miles from 21 on the Rockport side. Matter of fact, the five mile marker ended right in front of the barn on Lee Creek
Lived on Slate Creek rd. I went to the Rockport School on 21
Do you remember Harley Carr's store on 21? Closed in the 70's or possibly the 80's.
When I worked at a plastics plant, I would run 21 and stop in at least once a day until 90 or so. Would have LOVED to have had that old International pickup in the old garage section of the store or the model T in the barn!

that engine sound like new and look like mack truck engine R-600
Is it to big for the Giant IH Pickup your fixing to make? Make a heck of a engine in it, course your probably wanting to flip that one....
I love it when you bring that old iron to life. That IH sounded pretty good when it fired. I was wondering if the fuel shutoff was giving you some problems when it cranked for so long. What part of West Virginia are you from? My family mainly comes from the Parkersburg/Belleville area of Wood County.
Rockport in Wood County
39 years Would you think the 210 horses stuck around
Great engine's I have been running them for 30 years or so in all my spreader trucks they are easy to rebuild and don't take a brain scientist to work on them unlike the max force there a piece of shit
Hey Jonathan,
Being that I was raised it the most northern part of Idaho there are phrases that I come by that people say and since there is no dumb question .... what is a dirt dobber ? I think that is what you said was in the turbo ???
They are bees that look like a wasp that build a nest out of mud, almost like concrete. If I had started it and it broke up and pulled it into the engine, it would have damaged the cylinders for sure,
YEssir! They catch spiders for a yummy meal for their babies!
Thank you.
Jonathan would that fit in a Dodge d-100 chassis?
Did they leave it outside to rust
are you selling the engine??
How many employees do you have?
None, I use to have 4.
I heard that ... same here
Where is your wrecker service located in NC? Just wanting to know because I might come by and look at some of the cars you have for sale
Cameron
That's not to bad. Only 3 hour drive from me. Does your business have a Facebook page
Yes A-1 Towing
What do you think about the DT360?
You did put new oil and filters on it before you started it , Right ?
joe doakes why? the old oil would just get them dirty
does that dt466 have a pump screw to bypass the electronic shut off ?
No electric cutoff, just a manual that used a cable.
Yep.
I hate Mud Daubers! I used to see those dirt tube-shaped nests all the time on buildings and old stuff.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mud_dauber
Rat Rod power plant :-)
Se puede adaptar una bomba de direcion de mak
Throw that engine in a ratrod 💪
Is the Dodge still for sale ?
are u gonna sell it?
Even from here- I could tell the engine was not getting fuel!!
