    All the acoustic guitars look pretty much the same when dropping the plectrum inside the body and then trying to shake it out. ;)

    I went through several guitars, the Japanese Yamaha's were great. I still have my red tag 12 string. Then on to the coffee house days and the new Ovations were king, I sang into a mic and my guitar into a house amp. I had to pack for 8 weeks. A guitar and two bags of clothing was enough to take from college to college. Now I finally own the king of it all. A Martin D28 and it is perfect. Not the highest priced one but it it great every time I pick it up.

    I just got a brand new but entry level guitar. Unfortunately my biggest problem ( well yeah) is that I'm let handed. The guys in the shop I bought my guitar from ( yes I shopped around as much as I could in a country town) were and still are great. I went in a few times and must have tried to play right handed for an hour but no. They knew the guitar Liked and were able to order one in (the manufacturer ended up having to make mine) so a few weeks later I have my first ever proper guitar. I'm getting lessons at the shop too. Thank you for the video. It helped alot and narrowed down what I wanted. The guys in the shop were great and because I had a little knowledge of guitars it helped them in offering advice or showing me around.

    Just randomly clicked this video in my playlist - guy behind the counter sold me a Les Paul in 1997 at the old Nevada Music store in North End. Still do the "boss gone mad" sale? waited outside the shop at 3am to get in line, the guy came out and gave us coffee and doughnuts.

    25 years ago i bought a washburn D-20 with a nice spruce top for half the price. The reason was , of cause, the string action was much to high. All you have to do is to get out the bridge-inlay and file it down a bit, you may even replace it with a bone inlay, if you like, measurements are often similar and can be ordered at ebay. The trussrod is hidden under the soundhole, adjusting it is the other thing to get a good action. I still love the sound, wouldnt buy anything else.

    I wouldn't recommend mahagony or even cedar top for a beginner. It's hard to better than the Yamaha FG 830, which is laminated rosewood with scalloped bracing for $300. That should keep you happy untill you decide if you want a solid wood or more specialized guitar. The smaller guitars or mahagony tops are usually better at finger picking or leads.

    Actually, it has been said that the wood (top) ages gracefully over time as we play . SO to make a really fair comparison, we would have to play guitars that have been played for a looong time, to maybe see a difference. Real important? Naaww...

    Problem ... most guitars are so over played and poorly maintained that you can't tell anything about the tone. When I'm shopping for a new guitar i make the store install new strings on the two finalists or else no sale

    • @ravenjames3873
      @ravenjames3873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Raven James then obviously you haven't shopped at ottawa's largest music retailer. i played a d15 that was so dead and dry that it sounded as bad as a $200.00 laminate guitar. i would have bought the martin if the store had any respect for it.

      I tend to stroll around the acoustic section grab some guitars, play them, and write down the top ones I liked, and when I get home, I find videos of them being played and make a playlist and compare them through an elimination game. Its some work but its been worth it.

    dave matthews and jack johnson (and probably lots of other famous musicians) started learning guitar with cheap instruments less than $50.
    if they can do it, so can you. the magic and skill isn't in the guitar--it's in your hands, and your heart, and your head.
    JKP...what my teacher taught me long ago. Just Keep Practicing.
    forget about guitars over $300-400. odds are very great that you'll never need an Authentic New Zealand Monkeywood body with Rare Congolese Figwood fretboard and Moonrock-inlaid Fret Dots and whatever else that'll cost you $8000. be honest with yourself: do you really think your friends around the campfire and your family members at the Family Reunion and your audience of 9 people at the local coffee shop can really tell the minute differences between a $175 guitar and a $5,000 one?
    not likely.
    when you earn your first gold record or wrap up your first North American tour, you can treat yourself to a $5,000 Ovation Adamas or a $12,000 (yup...that's three zeroes) Froggy Bottom Koa Limited. until then, content yourself with spending a few hundred bucks (if even that much) and JKP.
    consider this: Jack Johnson plays custom Australian Cole Clark acoustic guitars on stage. they cost about $2,500 - $3,000, and he's been a world famous rock star for about 15 years. he could probably play a well set up $300 guitar on stage and few people would be able to tell the difference.
    i promise: chances are, you wouldn't make a $5,000 guitar sound like it was worth the cost...and any good musician can make a $175 guitar sound magical. as long as it's set up well, it'll sound good in your hands too, eventually.
    it's all in how hard you practice and how much you stay motivated to play well. not just notes on the page...but learning and practicing to play with your soul and your heart.

    @marklandis5794 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The concept of the ridiculous comments followed by the reasonable and factual perspective may have been good on the drawing board, but in practice it became quite inane and boring. It only served to make the video twice as long as it needed to be. Megan has a warm, genuine presence. Is both easy to look at and listen to her speak.
    But the never ending antithesis of common sense that preceded each point made it impossible for me to even consider listening to part 2. Make the same video without the guy, and watch your “likes and subscribers increase 10 fold.
