A similar womanly tenderness, akin to Ferrier's voice but with her own identity shining through the mastery and musical insight. A voice is always a person and when technique, talent and personal integrity coincide - something special happens.

Tormented Robert Schumann so convincingly conveyed by another tormented soul. Thank you for this extraordinary performance by Miss Hunt and Julius Drake!

An unforgettable performance of the unique singer forever joined the “Glory club”: Flagstad, Ferrier, Popp, Ameling, Baker, Norman, Janowitz, Moffo, Sills, Verrett..., will always admire.

To this list, I would add Elisabeth Schumann, Lotte Lehmann, and Christa Ludwig. All worth a listen

Che meraviglia unica. Stille, bellezza di voce, personalità ! tedesco perfetto ! Chissà la migliore in assoluto in questo ciclo di Schumann

In the last song, because of her genius, we get to spy on the sorrow and pain of this woman who speaks to herself. In all other recordings, the singer brings her sorrow to the audience but here , Lorraine allows us to peek into her world. A genius! A goddess, an angel.

This is most likely the most sublime rendition of Schumann's cycle. Lorraine brings more than just her voice to this, she feels every single note, every embellishment and conveys it to the audience (which luckily we can still be after her too early death). Being a native German, I can only applaude her pronounciation. The conclusion with "Nun hast Du mir..." is as heartbreaking as anything, she ever sang. Listen and watch her creating Irene in Handels incredible Theodora here on youtube. There, too, she fills every word with meaning and emotions.

Exactly. Baker has been my standard but she exceeds that in profundity and direct emotional connection

An outstanding artistic achievement. The closing piano always reduces me to tears.

Me too. No matter how many times I listen to it, that moment always breaks me down.

My favourite song cycle rendered exquisitely, if rather slowly, by another tragic figure whose voice rivalled Kathleen Ferrier's for richness. Unforgettable

I am atracted to Lorraine, some of her Haendel.. just exquisit.. but in this piece she sings in chains.. there is pleanty of space where to express passion (!) ... the one with her baby.. it does not come out of the shell... too bad

Don’t understand how you could (fail to) react that way. Here is consummate artistry and emotional truth

@@jamessmith5433 i absolutely love the piece for many reasons, i love Lorraine ... For some reason this rendition did not meet my expectations, the piece i love the most of this cycle didn't meet my expectations..."sein Bildnis" probably. There are sooo many point where a singer can express sooo many emotions... Kind of todter Hosenl. Kathleen Ferier is ok Fischer Dietrich too
