With reference to the catalytic converters breaking up. With the V12 engine used in the Aston Martin DB9 and other Astons of that era, the catalytic converters close to the exhaust headers can start to disintegrate and potentially be injested back into the engine. Obviously not a good thing, and something owners are aware of and always on the look out to prevent. The cause? Misfires due to failing coil packs sending unburnt fuel down the exhaust. The unburnt fuel then settles on the catalyst and burns, damaging the catalyst material and causing it to break up. The location of the secondary O2 is most definitely not why this engine has a habit of destroying cats. It's the high likelihood the the face of the substrate to become fouled by coolant and or oil from either a bad PCV or leaking IC which looks to be the case of this failure. @RandomShart I was a mechanic for some years, even standard engines fails. I saw engines fail within 50.000km from brand new, engines making more noise than a metal shop, throwing codes, electrical problems, sensors, Bad steering, leaking all over by oil, coolant, pneumatic suspension fail, coolant piping fail, And you know what!? Toyota’s came in for oil and filter change, and you never saw them until the next changeout.
@RandomShart I’m not saying a Toyota can’t fail, but standing on the shop floor everyday just changing oil on Toyota’s and getting my hair grey on poor VAG’s tells a story to me. Yes, some Mercedes C class with check engine light came in, but in no way near VAG. BMW engines with oil consuming problems, Vanos fault, and head gasket issues too, but again, some Toyotas came in for a wheel bearing replacement, and when checking the records of the car, nothing else but oil service and some brakes, spare parts for over 340.000km.
i could be wrong but i was always thought that a big audi v6 like that is not made to rest on the pan like that. it can warp or cause gasket issues it should always be held off the ground and weight kept off the pan.
Thanks for sharing this video! Definitely a car for the pros haha. Editing was cool, but I guess some people are very fragile :) Keep up the excellent work!
About two years ago we had one do this for no reason just after an oil change, span a rod bearing and destroyed the engine. We found a used and and got it all back up and running, then someone nicked it off the customers drive…
As a VW Multivan owner, I'm shocked at the bad online press the PD engines get as I don't have issues with mine (regular oil changes) and it's great to drive. However the rest of the online stuff out there regarding the newer VW / Audi common rail engines seem to be an absolute nightmare. And it's no better with other German marques. Tensioners, PCV issues, cats, always something. Are these all best avoided / have the Germans totally dropped the ball with quality/complexity ?
@@VAGTechnic thank you. Wanted to share a little insight on something that I have learned in the past month or so. When doing a piston oil control ring soak to lesson oil consumption. I have use the EPR on the bottom in, but I also have used the part number 260 WOR-BG product FOR THE TOP END PISTON SOAK. I DID A LOT OF TESTING IN DIFFERENT JARS WITH CARBON DEPOSITS AND I HAD FOUND THAT IT IS PHENOMENAL IN CLEANING OFF OLD COKE UP CARBON RINGS. I SOAK EACH PAIR OF PISTONS AT TOP DEAD CENTER FOR 24 HOURS EACH AS LONG AS THE CYLINDERS LOOK GREAT. I HAVE WENT FROM 1 QUART EVERY 500 MILES TO NOTHING SEVERAL TIMES ON THE AUDI 3.0 TS.
thats a scary thing for 3L TFSI owners because you wont know when/if your cat is coming apart and when you realize it, it might be too late, i guess maybe a simple hand over the exhaust tip periodically just to feel the exhaust flow pulses might be an indicator? damn those cats!
I am surprised, that there is no factory safety solutions against that. Usually turbo engines go into emergency and limited boost state, but not this one. Strange.
@@Divine_Serpent_Geh So you say, there is no boost control at all!? I do not believe that. Would be reasonable to use electronic roller clutch, like AC systems have, in case of emergency at least.

Hi, We used company in U.K. called Jetex , costumer wanted something what will pass the emissions in London , reason why we left them where they were because they need temperature to work , otherwise they would be just plug in the exhaust .
@@VAGTechnic For future considerations; have a look into GESi converters and placing them downstream, in a more accessible - and less hot - location. It's working wonders. You just have to get o2 sensor extension wires, and move the downstream o2. They still reach operating temperature without issue. It just takes a little longer.
Hi VAG Technic, would my 15 plate RS5 engine have the same potential CAT disintegration issue that could wreck my block too? It’s currently on 30k mls?
Hi there big Audi fan here, I have a question that’s been bothering me since I bought a salvage A6 avant. The steering seems to be locked not the steering lock itself but I have no steering at all when the car is running, at first I thought was the electric steering rack was knackerd but it looks fine and not sure if it’s to do with the crash itself that’s locked it. Any advice would be great.
Why didnt the owner want to go down the easy and smart option and get test pipes and put the CATS after the test pipes. That way you remove the heat and restriction away from the heads.
Placing the new catalytic converters on the exact oem spot like before was not a good move. These engines are known to melt the metal mesh catalytic very easily even stock. Test pipes in place and moved the catalytic converters lower under the car is the way to go and just extend the o2 sensor wire.
@@VAGTechnic Yes they will warm up slower doesn't matter it's more important keeping engine safe than that. If something when going for emission test you just do a good 30min run and all good. Good job with the channel, very helpful! Cheers!

This is the first video I've seen from VAG Technic. I don't mean to assume but judging from the bike rattle clip he added at the beginning, he is from Czech republic. Just a guess.... :)))
That’s a top secret information! 😂
@@VAGTechnic 👀👀 its going to be our little secret. 😊👍👍
Great content and very interesting 🤙
You are great! I have s4 b8 2010, caka engine, 245000km, i replaced lambda sensors before catalic converters, planed also to change second ones. Do you think catalic converter could be already for change or it ccould last a lot longer?
These engines seem to be a ticking time bomb
Not the engine, the whole brand.
@@Skyisnotalimit Yeap
@RandomShart I was a mechanic for some years, even standard engines fails. I saw engines fail within 50.000km from brand new, engines making more noise than a metal shop, throwing codes, electrical problems, sensors, Bad steering, leaking all over by oil, coolant, pneumatic suspension fail, coolant piping fail,
And you know what!?
Great work guys, love the videos, can you also list the music please
Got a sub mate, nice content
That knocking sound 😱
i could be wrong but i was always thought that a big audi v6 like that is not made to rest on the pan like that. it can warp or cause gasket issues it should always be held off the ground and weight kept off the pan.
Silicon … Plastic one Might crack , not metal one
@@VAGTechnic Thank you for the reply! I love your content. One of the best Audi Channels.
Thanks for sharing this video!
Definitely a car for the pros haha.
Editing was cool, but I guess some people are very fragile :)
Keep up the excellent work!
Thanks a lot. :)
What’s your opinion on the new 3.0T TFSI vs the previous?

wow ur good.. so many high tier audis there..
About two years ago we had one do this for no reason just after an oil change, span a rod bearing and destroyed the engine. We found a used and and got it all back up and running, then someone nicked it off the customers drive…
How scared should a curious buyer be by the b8 or 8.5 engines? Are they more or less reliable than the normal A4 fsi tfsi engines?
An Audi engine failed?!! It's so hard to believe! LOL!
Are there any sensors on the catalytic converters that tell the warning signs before it causes more damage?
Hi,
You might have fault code with catalyst trashold, but had S5 here not long ago and it only had misfire above 4K revs
Good work.
Bardzo dobrze mówisz po angielsku;)
Wow... that was one hell of expensive CAT CONVERTER...
What engine flush do you use ? I use BG product -EPR…. Just wondering if that’s what you prefer to use as well.
Yes
I HAVE WENT FROM 1 QUART EVERY 500 MILES TO NOTHING SEVERAL TIMES ON THE AUDI 3.0 TS.
thats a scary thing for 3L TFSI owners because you wont know when/if your cat is coming apart and when you realize it, it might be too late, i guess maybe a simple hand over the exhaust tip periodically just to feel the exhaust flow pulses might be an indicator? damn those cats!
great sound track!
I am surprised, that there is no factory safety solutions against that. Usually turbo engines go into emergency and limited boost state, but not this one. Strange.
These are supercharged not turbo. Hence the blower can’t produce “low boost” since it’s spinning with the motor at all times.
@@Divine_Serpent_Geh So you say, there is no boost control at all!? I do not believe that. Would be reasonable to use electronic roller clutch, like AC systems have, in case of emergency at least.
LMAO, Audis. I used to be a big fan.
Owning a VAG shop, congratulations, you are going to be rich.
Good video editing, for a music video
Thanks brother, keep it up! Howmuch for a job like that?
@VAG Technic Can I bother you to ask what brand catalyst you went with for replacement? And why you chose to keep them in the OEM location rather than relocating them downstream? Downstream GESi or HJS cats in the "midpipes" are the go-to option here in N. America when the owner wants to keep cats rather than just delete them with "test pipes".
Hi,
We used company in U.K. called Jetex , costumer wanted something what will pass the emissions in London , reason why we left them where they were because they need temperature to work , otherwise they would be just plug in the exhaust .
@@wes8398 but does it pass stricter emissions lik NYS or CA? Asking for a friend.
@@Wpjgdmtu Ayoo I go went RIT also. Have a b8.5 s5
Hi VAG Technic, would my 15 plate RS5 engine have the same potential CAT disintegration issue that could wreck my block too? It’s currently on 30k mls?
Hi let you know , working on one now ! Doesn’t look good
Is that going to be a TH-cam video too? Would be worth a watch. What is your pre-emptive advice to avoid this issue?

@@gbw28 Audi are shameless company I’ll never own one ever again after two engine failures on mk7 a4 2.0 TFSI I had.
Great work! I wish car manufacturers nowadays would care more for environment and start building cars like back in the 80 and 90 era.
Great video VAG Technic! Does this happen on the B9's too. Or are the cats better on that engine?
Just Have B9 RS5 here now And the chains are done different way , don’t see that this problem will remain .
Hi. Can you give some sort of idea of the cost of this engine replacement including all parts and labour?
7-12k depends
Great work guys. Question will this engine fit in a 2007 audi with the 3.2 lit?
No
Hi there big Audi fan here, I have a question that’s been bothering me since I bought a salvage A6 avant.
Where are you located?
12:42 is that ticking sound from the hpfp or is that knocking?
Cool. I want a huddie too!

Placing the new catalytic converters on the exact oem spot like before was not a good move. These engines are known to melt the metal mesh catalytic very easily even stock. Test pipes in place and moved the catalytic converters lower under the car is the way to go and just extend the o2 sensor wire.
They have trouble to make the emissions cold. , long runs
@@VAGTechnic Yes they will warm up slower doesn't matter it's more important keeping engine safe than that. If something when going for emission test you just do a good 30min run and all good. Good job with the channel, very helpful! Cheers!
Why is everyone saying move the cats further back and not recommending to completely remove them altogether is beyond me 🤔🤷♂️
Not everyone likes the stinky smell of a catless system, first of all. Second, if you do 200cell cats than gains are basically the same like catless. Third, most of the places in the World requires periodically smock testing so people doesn't want to pay for install/uninstall every year... @@adamprice9214
Reagrding timing chains why has vw/audi not rectified the issues on the v6s i mean it has been a known issue for years..
How much did the job cost?
Was thinking about getting a audi a7 but the timing chain issues have put me right off
Every bigger engine have chain and every chain will go one day :) there are plenty out there running without issue, but once it goes , it goes deep in to your pocket
Wow...a failed cat killed the motor? Nice work! Sub'd!
What spec is the green audi estate on the ramp in the clip? Love the colour
