    Actually, having Christopher Eccleston turn down the 50th anniversary special was a good thing for the plot. John Hurt's War Doctor was actually a better plot filler, and his character worked better as the War Doctor with his advanced aging through the hundreds of years he spent, and actually represented the "father figure" Doctor that had been missing since Hartnell.

      As much as I'd have loved having Chris back, I'll forever be grateful to Steven Moffat for giving us John Hurt as a secret War Doctor incarnation. In just 70 minutes, he cemented himself as one of the most profound, impactful, and soulful Doctors in history. Having it be not only a Doctor we didn't know about 'push the button', but also one played by an actor of legendary status not only works for the timeline but actually improves it in my personal opinion. Nine's, Ten's and Eleven's arcs all still work perfectly despite them being written before the War Doctor's arc.

    • @SwiftFoxProductions
      @SwiftFoxProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Agreed. Chris (or Paul McGann) would've been great but, the War Doctor was a wonderful addition. It, also, had the added bonus of giving Moffat an excuse to address the Doctor's regeneration limit which, as an old-school fan, he knew they were getting close to. By introducing the War Doctor and officially establishing the Meta-Crisis 10th Doctor as a full regeneration (which people had already been arguing over), he was able to instantly bump the 11th Doctor up to the pre-established regeneration limit so, he could deal with that plotline for the 11th Doctor's last episode.
      I'm sure Moffat was grateful to be the showrunner dealing with that storyline. It is one of those things that would've been very easy for your average showrunner to ignore, since it hadn't really been mentioned within the modern era, but would've created a plothole that would really annoy old-school fans (since Moffat is a fan, himself, he knew it was something that deserved to be acknowledged within the series).

      Also if they made 9 it would likely have retconned series 1

    • @BlueSparxLPs
      @BlueSparxLPs ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@warrenny1168 I don't think it would have retconned anything. It's known that the original plan RTD had was that McGann's Doctor was the Doctor who fought in the Time War, and that when we see Eccleston it's shortly after regenerating post-Time War. The retcon is the addition of John Hurt between them, but it's one that works very well.

    One of my favourite lines, and one that still makes me chuckle, is that delightful moment from the 50th when 10 and 11 are using their sonics on the time hole. "There's two of us. I'm reversing and you're reversing it back. We're confusing the polarity!" Never fails.
    This is, of course, closely followed a little later in the very same episode where 11 states, "We may have had our differences, which is frankly odd in the circumstances..." And he's right. The same basic person always butting head. I don't now if it is simply a clash of dominant personalities, or if anyone, placed in the same room with another version of themselves, would automatically be annoyed by themselves. I suspect yes.

    Both David Tennant and Peter Capaldi are fans who became the Doctor. Capaldi wrote a letter to the Radio Times and was published aged 15 and Tennant recalled standing in a queue at WH Smith's in his home town as a teenager to have a book signed by Tom Baker.
    Watching Tennant and Smith together, reminds me of Troughton and Pertwee together in The Three Doctors, plus in the scenes with John Hurt's War Doctor, they get told off as William Hartnell's Doctor did to the second and third regeneration.

    Tom Baker was the Doctor when I was a teenager. Anything involving him was fan service to me. He was magic. I think the Doctors after him had a very tough act to follow. Especially Sylvester because his series hinted at epic stories the show couldn't deliver on it's budget. I think that's what killed the show. The writers were capable of giving the fans what they wanted but couldn't on budget. Thankfully it's back and better than ever.

      Yup. We'd occasionally get episode on PBS in the states when I was growing up. My dad loved it so we watched together sometimes. My first, and until 2005 only, Doctor Who experience was with the 4th Doctor and Sara Jane. So, when she showed up later I got stupid excited. Then the cameo of Baker as the curator **kiss** loved it.
      I even remember watching the BBC's Narnia series. He played Puddleglum and that was just another prominent Tom Baker memory for me.

    As a fan of Classic Who, I loved any moments of story revealing more of the interior of the Tardis. Sadly, accepting what was budgeted for Invasion of Time was still great at the time. Not to mention more interior shots during Tom and Peter’s eras. I really wish more writers would show more. Even more of other Tardises like the Master’s and Rani’s were brilliant moments. Even Shada!
    That whole full circle with River still gets me in the feels!!

Also agree we want more of River Song, maybe Captain Jack... and Christopher Eccleston's Doctor. Actually I'd like to see Clara appearing at more points in the Doctor's timeline - again! And the Doctor's daughter. Or all the fan-favourite new-Who actors (Doctors, companions and a few other 'heroes and villains') (and writers?) all appearing on a Doctor Who documentary/convention/chat show/whatever and all talking about their characters, adventures and behind-the-scenes 'stuff'. Not sure whether I'm in the majority or minority here but I just want more of Jenny. Preferably played again by Georgia Moffett but really at this point I'd take any of her possible regenerations. And no need for her to be back full time either. Showing up here and there like River did would be fine, as long as we get more of The Doctor and Jenny's family interaction.
    I know RTD said she died off-screen right after the credit rolled but with him returning and this never being confirmed on-screen I truly hope he change his mind and bring her back. Plus, with her being a clone of The Doctor, she'd most likely be whatever species "The Timeless Child" is instead of being Gallifreyan so they could use her character to expand on that storyline. Maybe use her as a way to show what exactly an unrestricted member of that species can do without changing The Doctor's abilities too much.

    The Doctor and River... dayum, re-watching _Silence in the Library_ and _Forest of the Dead_ kick my arse a thousand times harder after knowing the ending in _The Husbands of River Song!_ That one, to me, is probably the #1 spot in this list.
    Or - OR - one you didn't mention, the first one where #12 Peter Effing Capaldi's Doctor was the President of the World, the story that many people poo-poo, the Zygon Invasion/Inversion, simply because of THE best speech ever done by the Doctor, EVER.
    People in the comments are mentioning Paul McGann. To me, the War Doctor was basically McGann's incarnation aged a whole, whole lot, sort of like Smith's on Trenzalore. That's _my_ headcanon,_ right or wrong.

    the story was during some strike so tom baker as the doc, explored the tardis extensivley there were external shots in that episode, which made the inside of the tardis seem infanate to me. the more modren one seemed enclosed and dark, to me it seemed much smaller. but i wore out that vidieo a long time ago

    I have always been fascinated by the TARDIS from back at the beginning to the present day, and I have to say that I'm sure there's way more to it than we saw in "Journey to the Center of the TARDIS."

    In one of the early explorations of the TARDIS, there is a scene of the exterior of an old brick building as part of the machine. That helped me to understand what the TARDIS actually was, an ancient and evolving device, originally housed in a building that was permanently set somewhere while the Blue Box would do all the "Traveling". Although this was shown to be wrong in other episodes, (The Zero Room), I liked the idea and kept it. So much of the TARDIS is trans-dimensional and not permanent, that its very beginning was almost mundane tickles my imagination.

    Can we please get two essential peeks. Another revived Omega that’s really big and really powerful which he should’ve been. And then a pre-disabled Davros but post the child we saw in series 9. An active young man. Maybe even a crossover between the two.

    CC’s era is certainly divisive whatever side you fall on. But, while he wasn’t my favorite, I don’t think he gets enough credit for how much fan service he gave in his episodes. He did a lot of Classic Who call backs that had been missing in New Who + everything in 13’s last epi (if she doesn’t come back to have the real 13-Ncuti regen) Things like putting the fez on 13, 13’s “Judoon Platoon not on the moon,” callback to 10’s line & others for New Who (+ Jack, of course). My understanding is Moff didn’t release the rights to River. Otherwise I can’t imagine CC wouldn’t have figured out a good story for 13 & River. And whatever people think of Timeless Child, the idea was rooted in Classic Who & a line of Moff’s. Was the execution great? Well, that’s going to be debated forever, but he took a couple of loose threads & did what he could to open so many new plot lines for years to come. That can only help keep the show going. And my favorite, CC’s Weeping Angel epi made them terrifying & amazing again.

    I really think they should have gone with Matt Smith's doctor encountering young Amy Pond with "Do you have any jelly-babies - as a child her age probably would. Is the fish-fingers and custard a Doctor who thing or a Russell T Davies or Steven Moffatt invention? I don't recall any previous doctor eating or even mentioning such a concoction.

    10. I for one was disappointed that we never saw the NuWho version of the boot cupboard.
    8. It has NOT "been apparent since day one that the show's timey-wimey premise would allow for [multi-Doctor stories]." The fact that the Doctor regenerates wasn't even hinted at until "The Tenth Planet," over three seasons into the original run.
    4. Comic books have been running interconnected universes for DECADES before either the Marvel Movieverse or the RTD-verse existed. Just, nobody cared because it's comic book nerd stuff.
    3. Tom Baker played that role before, in the 1992 VHS version of "Shada." No surprise for _real_ Whovians. Also, both Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann were (technically) The Incumbent Doctor for longer than Tom Baker was.
