  • I got back from a family vacation with enough time left in the day to sneak out for a minimalist fishing trip. This consisted of my throw-and-go canoe, one ultralight setup, and a small bag full of Mule Fishing gear.
Sometimes, the most simple fishing trips are the most enjoyable! Despite it being the heat of the day in the heat of summer, I was able to catch several fish, including five total species. No giants but that is okay because these fish were all bonus fish anyway. I had no intentions of getting the canoe out so I am thankful for this opportunity. Shoutout to the Donkey Tail Jr for getting the job done as usual :)

I would highly encourage you to try fishing from a canoe someday if you get a chance. Sure it isn't the most fancy watercraft, but there is just something peaceful about being on one. Sometimes, fishing can actually be more relaxing when you don't overthink it and you just go with limited gear and lower expectations. I personally think that ultralight fishing and canoes go hand-in-hand!

This summer I bought a used 14’ old town canoe with 2 molded seats so I could go fishing with my kids or a friend. It rides like dream in the water and is very fun to fish out of.

Yes, multiple times. Especially in the Boundary Waters Canoe Basin, where we caught Smallmouth Bass and a 30.5 inch Walleye weighing 13.5 pounds. Quite exciting since my son was just 12 at the time.

Hey, I'm Justin - (Other channel) After finding a kayak hack for my perception outlaw that didn't exist on TH-cam I uploaded a video so others could find my solution. After finding your channel, learning from you, and using Mule Fishing products my fishing game has gotten better by a factor of easily 1000%! With this inspiration I started making fishing videos. Just wanted to say thanks and that I appreciate all the content! I gave you several shout outs in this video (I hope that's ok!)...I caught everything on the Donkey Tail / Donkey Tail Jr. - Thanks Ethan!

My thumbnail is a picture of a nice elk in my Mad River Explorer... I'd have a hard time remembering how many metric tons of moose that canoe has hauled out of the bush. I keep it stashed at a lake near my house, and a Bob Special on the roof of my car for hitting other places. I've degenerated back to where I enjoy just chucking spoons at pike and walleye the most. A good canoe, a handful of spoons, a cheap rod with an old Mitchell hanging off it... fun just doesnt get any purer than that.

Another canoe guy here. Currently use an Old Town 133. It’s a bit on the large side but comfy in which to move around. Plus, you don’t need rod holders etc. (unless you wanna troll, which is not my thing). You can also bring one, or two smaller fishing buddies in the 133. However, I am looking to acquire a Solo like the one you use for ease of movement, both on and off water.

Yep, had a friend with a canoe years ago that I fished with and lately wanted a boat to fish out of, so I considered getting a canoe to fish out of for a bunch of reasons. I needed something as stable as a jon boat without the weight, since I am not a spring chicken anymore and want to be able to handle it for years to come. This rules out a lot of the kayaks available (in my opinion) since they weigh so much. I bought an Esquif Mallard XL, since it is 20lbs lighter than most of the wide fishing kayaks. Testing it, it has fine stability, and I can even use a double-bladed kayak paddle with it. And, because it is a square stern and has a great carrying capacity, I can add a trolling motor and battery. I am making pontoons that I will attach to the bow area and can swivel out of the way while underway or leave deployed if I need to, due to wind and waves. All-in-all I have (will have) the same capability/capacity as a jon boat without the boat weight that would need a trailer or a stronger back. I carry mine in a pickup truck bed and use a bed extender.

@@JohnJames. Not sure why there are literal enemies when it comes to bfs. It’s not that much more expensive, you can grab a dark wolf reel and a 40$ rod from china that comes to around 100$ for both. The whole spinning setup can out-fish a baitcaster setup is so ignorant to say, because not only is it not true but it also shows a lack of knowledge by whoever is saying it. They both have their pros and cons, but once familiar and proficient with a baitcaster, the pros outweigh the cons vs a spinning setup. The Japanese haven’t been successful in pressured waters for years because a spinning setup out-fishes a baitcaster, but just the opposite.
