Cosmos is light sensitive, sowing too late in the Spring can delay flowering resulting in the dreaded ‘Cosmos Trees’!
However from my trials I have found that sown too early the lower light levels initiate flowering too quickly at the expense of vegetative growth giving short plants with small flowers.
About now is the ideal time to start Cosmos for the best of both worlds.
    Happy Sowing!
    Love Zoe x

Thank you for this explanation. I had Xsenia cosmos which started out with beautiful flowers but quickly died. I did notice they had scant foliage. I love your selection of cosmos. Absolutely gorgeous!

I got too excited and jumped the gun, sowing a few a couple of weeks ago, they are doing great. I now have the green light to sow a load more! Thanks Zoe.

I cut the cosmos this year due to space, but I feel myself caving already. 😂
Zoe, very curious, what frost free dates you and your grow along crew are working within.

The UK varies widely last year it was April but usually the last risk is mid May but frosts are few and far between x

I completely had cosmos trees last year. Thank you for letting me know why this happened!

Thanks Zoe for this I can’t wait to start mine today. Can I just clarify something? When you put the propagator lid on do you leave this on until all the seeds have germinated or take it off once a couple have?

Usually if you have fresh seed they should near enough all pop up at once but if not lid on just at night x

Thank you for a great video as always Zoe!
I notice your cosmos are on a heat mat in the GH. Would you say sowing in a cold, but south facing greenhouse would be a good idea atm?

If you don’t have a heat mat then germinate them indoors the move to the greenhouse. Keep a eye on them as they germinate quickly and you don’t want leggy plants x

@@zoewoodwardgardening thanks so much, I’ve always waited much later to start cosmos, but as you say in your video, flowers were relatively late. Thank you for all your content - love it so much!

How many can go in a 15 litre container if any?

You can only really grow the small types, otherwise they will be a nightmare to stake. Cosmos also drink a lot of water so you’ll need to consider that too.
