Don’t worry, Toby Fox moved on to continue to make games, including Deltarune, which is a spiritual successor to Undertale (they even use the same letters if you look closely). Also, welcome to the Undertale community! The magnitude of this fandom is comparable to the maddening size of an eldritch god, and we all love it.

Funny thing about "an Undertale Sequel". Word has it that Toby Fox was working on Deltarune before he even thought about doing Undertale. So... technically, Undertale is the spin-off by order of operations, even though Deltarune was released afterwards.

While not caused by low probability, Deltarune Chapter 2 featured an alternate route with requirements so specific that it was written off as fake for some time. Then it turns out it did exist after all.
Presumably, this was done so that the player *definitely* can't claim to stumble into it by mistake like Undertale's No Mercy route or that in universe it'd make sense for the human to just defend themselves with violence.

@@esupton783 yeah, people really liked scapegoating Chara in the early days of the fandom thanks to that "SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL?" scene. Notably, the line was rewritten in the JP release in a way that makes it sound more ambiguous.

    • @darky5780
      @darky5780 ปีที่แล้ว +23

I think the reason that Chara got scapegoated so hard is that:
      1. How do you even represent the player in fan fiction in a way that makes sense? Specially since they have no physical body.
      2. Chara is already evil, who cares if she didn't technically do the no mercy route? (Remember, she tried to kill 6 people before the game even starts.)
      3. We only learn Frisk's name in the pacifist route, so we can assume that's who Frisk is supposed to be.

    • @esupton783
      @esupton783 ปีที่แล้ว +22

@@darky5780 I can see number one, but is number 2 even canon? I mean, in game all we know about chara is that they were the first fallen human, they committed sudoku just so asriel could get six more souls and break the barrier, and asriel was the one who held back, I wouldn't call that evil, misguided of course, but a child can have the wildest ideas without realizing the implications or details
The rest is up to the player, and chara is there at the end of the genocide route, along with flowey's monologue, as meta commentary against the curiosity of players that destroy worlds over and over to see "what happens"

    • @darky5780
      @darky5780 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@esupton783 It's canon, you can put a thousand reasons why Chara would do this, but at the end it is the same. She tried to take 6 lives, by taking her own no less, and was only stopped by Asriel who held back.
I mean, the entire point of the Dreemurs is that murder is murder and you shouldn't do it. I don't get why Asgore has to take flak for trying to save his kingdom, but when Chara does it it's alright.
I can see why you would doubt the third, i really only out it there to kind of explain why Frisk is not treated as the genocidal maniac most of the time. But to be fair, Frisk is such a blank slate that if it weren't for the name reveal at pacifist, we would treat them as the player personified.

I think one of the big reasons Undertale evolved to be such a massive and dedicated fandom was because it partially evolved out of the Homestuck Fandom.
Before Toby Fox made Undertale, he was actually a member of the Homestuck Fandom, creating a lot of fanwork himself until he he eventually became a part of the Homestuck team and created several soundtracks that were used in Homestuck.
Also for those who don't know, Homestuck is a massive multi-media meta narrative webcomic with several thousand pages of content, such as animations, games, comic pages, illustrations and soundtracks, and it is probably also one of the most complicated works of fiction on the internet with more content in it than even some of the longest book series in the world. I think knowing this helps understand why Undertale become so absolutely massive, since before Undertale was a thing, Homestuck was also just absolutely massive.
PS: Yes, Toby Fox is the one who is working on Deltarune (the spiritual successor... or dare i say... official AU to Undertale ?), and as much as the success of Undertale overhwelmed him, i think he is a creative soul at heart and no amount of outside pressure will ever change that about him. The "Charaized" thing is a reference to a character called Chara in undertale. Without getting into spoilers most people envision chara as an evil, violent, genocidal being which... While COMPLETELY not true has been used to OBLIVION. The charaized" term to my knowledge boils down to giving other characters similar personality traits that the FANON version of chara has.

I know about all these AUs, I was really into the fandom and even made my small AU called Reunitale back in the day. It was a really fun time and I made lots of friends I'm still in contact with.
Reunitale eventually died out, and I eventually stopped being obsessed with this fandom, but going back to watching comic dubs, animations, AUs... It just feels so nostalgic.
Though, I'm not in a happy place right now. I became a lot more reserved, and when I look at older comments of mine, I was a lot more open and I'm surprised I'm the one who wrote these things.
I tried making another AU, one which is better, but with my procrastination, lack of self-esteem and my fear of interacting with many new people at the same time, it's not moving forward.
I can't get involved in a fandom like I used to. I wish I could, but things are so different now. I want to draw, create, be in a community, but I just can't find the motivation anymore.
But I wouldn't be who I am without Undertale. It made me discover my passion for creation, for video game lores... It made me start to draw and learn english too.
I'm not Toby, I'm not a popular content creator, but Undertale still changed me. It helped me understand who I am. Watching this video really makes me want to dive back into the fandom.
To live these fun times again. Who knows, maybe I can find the motivation to make a big Undertale-inspired project again, and use the experience I have now to make it work this time.

Glitchtale doesn't require any knowledge of other fanmade content, but Underverse kind of does (although many many people have watched it without that context and still enjoyed it). As far as I know, there's not a "flow chart" of all of the Alternate Universe stuff lol, but I am planning on making a video that explains everything anyone could possibly need to know about all that stuff before watching Underverse sometime in the next few months. Toby Fox has been also doing a lot of music collaborative work. He had his soundtrack being interpreted by Orchestras around the world.
Toby Fox has also worked with big artists, including VTubers like Hoshou Marine's "Treasure box".

Toby has stated that it's not a sequel, nor is it a prequel, and that where you left your characters in Undertale are still where they're at there. Undertale is a huge fandom. You know how the, like, 10 AUs mentioned in the video?
    THERE ARE MORE.
    Let's list a few :
Something New/Killertale, Understeam, Undernovela, Dreamtale, Overtale, Othertale, Storyshift, Tubertale, Undertoad, Last Breath, Altertale, Underland, and the thousands upon thousands of others.
Heck, I have two AUs I'm CURRENTLY MAKING. One is a continuation of the story with changes to the past, called Kattitale, and the other one is Undertale but the characters' personality are completely inverted, called Invertedtale.
Kattitale is definitely my favorite child. I mean, I added a ton to the past, a bit to the things happening during the game, and a TON of stuff to the future, including AN ENTIRELY NEW CIVILIZATION AND RACE. Honestly, I should probably go touch some grass.
The best part? I HAVE NEVER PLAYED THE GAME. I've gotten so obsessed with this game, I've learned about some interesting things the fandom created, such as...
Dreamswap. Dreamswap is an example of an AM, or alternate *MULTIVERSE*, in which the sanses switch roles. Underswap Sans, or Blue, is now the destoyer of worlds, Error is now just a nice guy who goes by Template, Ink is a cool yet serious person who does some creating, but not a lot, Cross is now called Oreo and is just a cool memer, Dream is the boss of the Justice Reigns, and is also an angel/bird, and Nightmare is just a cool skeleton who keeps the Meme Squad in check and loves annoying Dream. There are more, but these are the ones that I know.
All this to say: The Undertale fandom has gone into extreme detail and made everything different from the original to the point that one multiverse isn't enough.
Man, though. I've been an obsessive fan for about 2 years, and I haven't found the end yet. Maybe we've gotten to the point that new Undertale content is being created faster than we can consume it.
    I don't know.
    Sincerely,
    An Undertale fan.

God, I remember back then, I was part of the wave of people that got into this rabbit hole as it was forming, and it's perfectly described here, I played the game, three times, I watched multiple youtubers play both pacifist and genocide routes, watching animations reading fan comics, searching for voice overs of said fan comics, and finally reaching au madness, I followed glitch tale as it was releasing, and a few lesser known, like storyshift (where characters kept their original personalities, but were placed on other places in the story, Sans was the king and papyrus took care of the ruins, toriel and asgore lived happily with asriel and Chara, and so on)

  • @FaisLittleWhiteRaven

Toby Fox is still around and actually seems to be involving himself in more and more stuff honestly: He's somehow gotten connected to Game Freak (aka the makers of Pokemon) and helped massively with the OST of the newest entries in the series 'Pokemon Scarlet and Violet'. He helped promote Omori* another little indie game largely made by a single person and has since become massively popular (a track he made is in the game's OST), he's been doing the music for a bunch of little animation+story vids that pop up on youtube every now and then (main one I can think of off the top of my head is Skies Forever Blue), he's now a contributing writer for some really big gaming magazine in Japan, and as for actual game making Toby Fox has been working Deltarune which is basically 'Undertale 2' but also in a strange way closer to all those mad fan AUs than a direct sequel?
Deltarune's demo has two chapters released currently and so far the game is even more impressive than Undertale was (game mechanics were improved, Toby's music is S teir as always, the story and routes are incredibly well written and gripping even if we don't know exactly where its all heading yet..! It's so great

@@marinellovragovic1207 I feel slightly awkward including that one because I'm like 99% certain that one was basically a reused Homestuck track he made quite a while before Sword and Shield (which honestly is hilarious that he got away with that, especially given what the Homestuck track in question was used for) but well. Yeah.
Thanks for reminding me of it; probably should've listed it regardless~ XD

You want to know a bit about the story before watching X-tale in order to understand things, and it is really worth it in the end.
Just know, it was created over the span of YEARS and the animation quality only gets better and better with each episode.

I didn't know of this creator before this as I mainly found and watch you from your Helluva Boss reactions with their in depth analysis of most episodes. I wanted to check this out since I saw you were getting into glitchtale since that is series very close to my heart and I would love to see your reactions to it since I was just wrapping up my binge of it with different reaction channels for the time being. That being said with the name of the video you were watching and my unfamiliarity with the creator I assumed it was going to a deep dive or analysis of the AU's and fan creation side of undertale mocking it and the fans of it for it being so weird and cringe. As Super Eyepatch Wolf said there's definitely a strong confusion that comes with it if you don't know much about the fan lore or even a relatively deep understanding of the game lore and the game itself. What I got when I watched the video along with you is a very reasonable and fair take on the undertale community and well-put together analysis (idk why I'm using that word so much in this lol) of the game and it's surrounding fan creations that said things in a beautiful way still giving proper critiques where deserved. I am so excited for you to get into the fandom and even though I haven't watched you react to season 1 I truly do hope you get to react to season 2 as it is so incredibly dear to me and has very much helped build who I am as I grew up along with the series from the first episode. I really hope you enjoy your time here, even if things get confusing at points that's okay and in my personal opinion isn't actually as overwhelming as it looks. I hope you can explore this fandom and understand why so many people are so passionate about it to this day.

If you’re into SuperEyepatchWolf I suggest looking at his Fear & Hunger video (The Cruelest Video Game), which is an amazing look into a well done (relatively unknown), indie game. Regarding Undertale, Deltarune (Pronounced Delta-rune, sorry) is a spiritual successor created by Toby Fox, though there is some speculation about AU shenanigans. Some good undertale animations would probably be the 2 big ones mentioned there (Glitchtale & Underverse, though you should wait for the second one), and “A Beautiful Day” by ClearlyConfused. A more niche but still well done piece of Undertale content would be “Undertale the Musical” by Man on the Internet.

Luckily for the Undertale fandom, it's been many years, and most of the toxic fans have either grown out of the fandom or actually become better people, I personally have been part of this fandom since the very beginning, since 2016, and honestly, I feel like it has only gotten better as time went on. Underfell's creator, Underfella, actually came back a few years ago and restarted the official Underfell Blog, sadly Underswap's creator never came back, but in the fandom we all respect them and while the idea of Underswap has changed a bit, it's still pretty much the same, being respected, appreciated and loved to this day.
I personally love being part of this fandom, and I always want to see new people coming in, most aren't interested because of how huge the content is, but, if you are interested in watching more Undertale, AUs, and even Underverse (I think this video gave enough context for you to actually start watching it if you want), I'd love to be a part of this channel as well, I love reactions and you do it really well! I am prolific in being very, very late to every fandom -- cause I just... procrastinate... And Undertale was one of the exceptions! I wasn't there for the start, no, but I was there VERY early on. Earlier on than I usually would. I was a kid back then and honestly... The Undertale fandom WAS my childhood. I relished in the creative, I loved every AU, art, music, stories, theories, playthroughs, everything. I met so many of my friends then and it was for sure the one point in my life I mad the most art in my life. Ever since then I have been overtaken by the Hells of ADHD and I, at most, draw something past a sketch once every few months. I wish I had the inspiration and motivation that the Undertale fandom gave me from way back then.
I was very active -- I made OCs. Yes with the 'cringy' Sans and Papyrus AUs, albeit I made a unique-ish twist on it. Even for my young self way back then. I made Tumblr Askblogs (my alltime favorite things to do as a kid) and I wrote stories and RPed with friends.
It always hurts when people dunk on or call all the AUs of alternate Sans and Papyrus stuff cringy or whatnot. Cause it was made in good faith. An enjoyable, fun pasttime. It was creative seeing all the twists people could do to the story and what they could do with it all. And it all meant so, so much to me. So it still hurts when people call creativity and off-brand creations as cringy just cause it's not THEIR norm.
Like I'll admit: The fandom's obsession with Sans and Papyrus -- mostly Sans - was indeed notably odd. But what's the harm in it when it drew together a community and fuelled so much creativity and helped establish artists with recognition and respect to this very day?
This message isn't supposed to just be a defense to the ''''''''cringy''''''' or ''''''''weird'''''''' side to the fandom, but an appreciation for it. It was my childhood, it shaped me, and I still look back at my old, ugly art fondly.
If you haven't played the game, you're missing out. As the game alone is something to be admired, the fandom only enhanced it. I strongly believe everyone should play Undertale at least once, whether it be the neutral route, pacifist route or genocide route. Obviously everyone will get on your ass if you don't do pacifist route at least once as it's supposed to be the 'true' ending, but I think they're all impactful and as equally important. But the pacifist route does indeed represent the 'proper' feeling of the game.
