Roger was so down to earth & talented. Of the many times I saw Roger in the 80's, one really sticks out . His performance at the Roxy in Hollywood was the first time I saw Him live. It's the night Roger found out his father passed away. He dedicated the show to his father & ROCKED the house! He played the synth/talkbox, bass, guitar, etc.Lakeside & Shirley Murdock opened the show, Roger, his son (R.I.P), nephew Rufus & the rest of Zapp ruled that night! Rufus has a gospel/zapp sound now .
What can you say about Roger? All I can say is that he was a genius, especially when it came to his sound. He was the one that signaturized the talkbox. No one could do it like Roger. He also was tight on the guitar too. He could play that guitar even without a pick too. Your style will never be forgotten. RIP Roger Troutman (1951-1999)
Best performer of all time. One of the best producers as well. All around work ethic and style is second to none. The man was a legend well before his death and its sad to think about all the great music that could have been made. I can only imagine what he would have done today. I get a lot of my influence from this man and am grateful to grow up on his music. Need more artists like Roger
Another great video of Roger. I never saw Roger when he was alive but I feel him trying to sincerely entertain people in these videos. He will be always remembered.
if only they had footage of Roger on guitar because BigRobb stated in waxopoetics magazine #35 that as good as Roger was on the talkbox,he was three times even better on the guitar. Roger was a genius.
Loved his skills, He knew all the #1 songs there ever just about was in different types of music , rock, country, reggae, i.e., amazing because you had to know melody to use the talkbox!!! BigRobb props to you for keeping things going.
Heres a few:Lets work(Controversy),Erotic City(single),Irresistable Bitch(single),Pop life(around the world in a day),Head & Uptown(Dirty Mind) Housequake(Sign 'o'the times),Sexy Dancer(Prince) and not to mention all the"grooves" he did for others, just pick anyone from the group "the Time" & you'll find the funk. The list goes on,enjoy.
both are used for different purposes and that doesn't discredit one from the other. Autotune can be a useful, creative tool just like the talkbox. Apples and oranges brother
does anyone have any full concerts of Zapp with Roger from the early 80's to late 90's? I have looked everywhere and really eager to see it. Thank you in advance.
ROCKNROLLFAN I do....I use to be Entertainment Director for casinos that loved Old School...I booked Roger 3 times....opened for him. Hit me up Google They Call Me Phunkplayah I play talkbix also
Come on ya'll don't hate on T-Pain, Rodger himself said that he got the idea from Peter Framton, who may have been influenced by Kraftwerk, who, by the way, used to make thier own voice manipulation modules.

I loved his message near the end about staying away from drugs and alcohol, listening to your parents, and staying in school. GREAT ADVICE!
RIP Roger Troutman: king of talbox, master of funk, godfather of West Coast rap...

That's Pure Talent and hours of hard work. A real lose to music. RIP Mr Troutman.

Stevie Wonder also used a miniMOOG with the Talkbox at one point of time.
Talkbox: Mike Accardo yeah on Music of my mind then songs & the key of life also live performances damn it's a shame he don't use it anymore
Great clip.
懐かしい。懐かしすぎる・・・
Roger's improvising on the talkbox about Japan near the end sounds like earth, wind, and fire's song "Lets Groove"......
and Controversy(Controversy), Soft&Wet(For You) and Get it Up(The Time). Its truly amazing how many ppl sleep on Prince.
it reminds me of earth, wind and fire's Lets Groove....all He had to do was go into the melody and that would have been it.

@syddiallo The DX was light weight and ran on batteries and pretty much had the same sounds.
5:26 to 5:33 is his theme song
The below statement was addressed to MUN7001, oh and by the way, Prince is full of GROOVE.
Damm wish he was around
"when he used his minimoog, it rocked over his DX100 era...so much more bass in his sound with the moog... " link???????????
