We got my akita when he was 12 weeks and since then he has been so obedient and he listens really well. He sometimes acts better than other smaller breed dogs or older dogs. It is really because we showed him who was the boss when he was a puppy. Alot of people dont do that and that's when Akitas get aggresive.
I just love them. We just lost our Akita mix after 14 years, he was the best dog in the world. Loved kids, people, was loyal and protective, no one could stand in front of our home without him barking. He was unforgettable. RIP Thor.

I agree. I had a chow akita mix and she was the smartest dog I have ever met. Patient with the kids in the neighborhood would always let them hug and pet her. She would always be pushed up against my toddlers when someone was over regardless if she knew them or not.

My sympathies, I certainly understand. The pup we kept out of this litter is our eighth akita, they have a way of attaching themselves to your heart, and quickly.

We're in Southeast Alaska. All of these puppies have gone to new homes. We found the mother and another on Craig"s list in the Seattle area. They come up on Craig"s list once in a while but go pretty fast. Check with veterinarians in the area you live to get references to breeders. Purebred puppies from papered sires cost $1000 +. Sometimes you can find pups that people realize they can't handle.One of the dogs we got was a rescue. Check with www.akitarescue.com/.
My son wanted to keep them all, it was a sad day when they all left, but we get to visit most of them on occasion. They make their new owners happy too, and that's worth a lot.
We've had Sakura (Saki) since she was 8 weeks old, and we love her. She is the 7th Akita we've had and all have been delightful. I have a few videos of Saki posted a couple of years ago.

I have owned, trained many many breeds. Akitas, Malamutes and Bassets were the most enjoyable and challenging. Akitas and Malamutes are NOT for the first time dog owner! They are both great breeds but require time, training, thought and a strong will. The Basset Hound is the funniest breed I ever owned and God, are they stubborn!..sweetest, easiest going dogs but stubborn!
They are usually eager to please and like to be worked with. Like all smart dogs, they can be stubborn and need a firm hand, but respond well to kindness and gentile handling, and not too well to meanness or abuse.
All of today's Akitas come from the same few dogs saved after World War Two. Most of the dogs were killed for food and fur( the fur was used in high altitude flight suits and polar gear as frost from breath in extreme cold doesn't stick to it). The remaining dogs were ordered killed by the emperor to prevent the Americans from getting them (sacred royal dogs). A few were rescued by an American soldier and brought to the US. For what-ever reason, the Japanese decided they did not like the results of the American bred dogs, and selectively bred for their own standards. The so-called American Akita is closer to the original breed, but both are fine dogs.
I completely understand where they originated from but I still stand by American Akita and Japanese Akita Inu being two breeds. They're completely different when it comes to their standard looks/build however they do share some similar personalities. We have a male Akita Inu and don't plan on getting another till some time after he passes. We're considering adopting or even purchasing from a breeder again. I'd like to get a male Akita and a female Akita Inu someday.

My boyfriend got an Akita and a lab mix and she's great! She's so quiet but loving! She's super protective and doesn't like men....Is that normal that she doesn't? There great dogs!
My Akita princess doesn't like men either. She's very wary about being around them, except for my mom's husband, and older men. My girl is very protective too. She's afraid of going down stairs, but one day my mom took the cable guy in the basement to fix a problem and Kayla zoomed down those stairs so fast and she refused to leave my moms side. She did have the chewing problem too. She destroyed a kitchen chair in 2 hours, and chewed all the corners, arm rests, and corners of the cushions on all the living room furniture. Just make sure there are a lot of toys, esp rope toys if you don't want furniture chewing. But she grew out of it before she was 2.
Oh, make sure you are very careful with them around other dogs too. When they're properly introduced to people and dogs multiple times, it makes it easier. But I remember my girl got very protective when I took her to a dog park and another dog came near me. She was fine with the Rottweiler and little dogs, but she didn't care for the Aussie cattle dog.

My grandmother has 2 male akitas and they sometimes fight,they dont get along to well.I recommend 1 male and 1 female.
