    Fujiwara no Michinaga was such a boss that at one point his three daughters Shõshi, Kenshi and Ishi were grand empress dowager, empress dowager and empress AT THE SAME TIME.
    Shōshi (born 988) married Emperor Ichijō and became secondary empress. She gave birth to emperor Go-Ichijō and Go-Suzaku. When Ichijō died he was succeeded by his cousin Emperor Sanjō who then married Kenshi (born 994). Kenshi gave birth to princess Teishi, who married emperor Go-Sanjō, her first cousin, Shōshi’s son. Sanjō was succeeded by Emperor Go-Ichijō, Shōshi’s son, and Ishi (born 999) married him.
    So Shōshi married the emperor, her sister married his successor and gave birth to a future empress, and the third sister married the son of her eldest sister. It helps that Shōshi was 11 years older than her youngest sister, but she was still 19 when she married her 10 year old nephew. Her daughter with her nephew-husband Kaoruko went on to marry Go-Sanjō, who was the grandson of Kenshi.
    It’s all incredibly confusing but basically Michinaga made it so that like 6 consecutive emperors either had one of his daughters in their bed or directly above them in their family trees

    I was led to wonder... What exactly did Fujiwara (or any of the future regents) actually do with their power. What was the extent of "governance" in those times? They may have commissioned a shrine or two here and there.... is that about it, or were there notable accomplishments through their rule?

    Although the emperors lost their power, I sometimes believe that it’s the claim of divine descendant and the lack of actual power protected the royal line for the next millennia. The shogunates got overthrown, the daimyos fought everywhere, the capital got burnt down for a few times, but no one bother to seize the throne...

    • @Linfamy
      @Linfamy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The Fujiwara weren't all-powerful, they still had to deal with court politics. At that point, a new adult emperor had arisen. Becoming kanpaku was probably an easier solution than offing the emperor :p

    • @just_radical

      Seiwa's son Yozei was allegedly an insane sociopath (or maybe he just showed an independent streak so they slandered him as Joffrey Baratheon in the records later who knows?) so Mototsune decided to depose him. The candidate he was able to get enough people to rally around as successor was Yozei's uncle who was in his 50s at the time. I'd imagine almost certainly part of the deal was the the new Emperor be agreeable to serving as a figurehead while Mototsune retained power.

      (although it would probably be pronounced either "Kaminari no kami" (雷の神) or "Raijin" (雷神))
      Btw, cool coincidence, since "naru" is "to become", and using the stem can work like an adjective: kaminarikami could both be kaminari kami ("雷 神" thunder kami) and kami nari kami ("神 なり 神" kami that became kami)

    I believe the shift of power from the hands of the Emperors to the regents was not right for Japan, that's what I have to say.

      I said so Lord Lin because I believe in the Devine authority of the Japanese Emperor and believe that a descendent of Amaterasu should be the head of Japan.

      The actual situation was more complex, Kanpaku was a office that was created by Emperor Uda himself for Fujiwara no Mototsune, due to his effort to help his father Emperor Kōkō ascend the throne. The relation between Sesshō/Kanpaku and the Emperor was more cooperative than you might think except some rare cases like the relation between Fujiwara no Michinaga and Emperor Sanjō. They cooperated in the form which the Fujiwara Sesshō/Kanpaku managed political issues while the Emperor dealt with religious issues (which was both "politics" for Ancient Japanese, the pronunciation of "政"(politics) in Japanese is matsurigoto, which means religious issues). Furthermore, it seemed like that the Emperor still perserved the right to appoint who would be the next Sesshō/Kanpaku (although mostly it is a office for the maternal grandfather of the Emperor), as we can see in the case that Emperor Ichijō refused Fujiwara no Michitaka's (the Kanapaku by then) request to appoint Fujiwara no Korechika (Michitaka's son) as the next Kanpaku.

    天神 Tenjin does mean a god, but more of a low ranking god. According to Taoism, a low ranking god amongst heavenly beings.
