As live streamed by www.brassbanned.com and www.pipebanned.com Live from Rotorua on Saturday March 11, 2018 PS the massed bands performance is at the very end of the video.
I love that there is a good gap between the bands and a stationary camera. There is nothing like the sound of a pipe band getting closer and closer, put the willies up ye!
So beautiful and it made me cry buckets - but good buckets!! Back in the early 1980's I was trying to woo a delicious man who enjoyed bagpipe music ... the man for me ... anyway, long story short, living in South Africa and looking for bagpipe music (a labour of love , BTW ... Uh, bagpipes??) I finally managed to get the key to his heart (word-of-mouth, and "TDK does amazing things....") and I hooked my man!!. We had a wonderful, crazy, as-close-to-perfect as it could get with two "almost adult children - us) and after 10 years we decided to "make it a real thing" (one of the three happiest days of my life ... and I was also 8 and a half months pregnant but our split prior to the wedding was all my fault) ... I know I said short but here's what happened next ... We married but didn't make our 3rd anniversary - Mike passed away from kidney cancer when our youngest daughter was 5 months and our oldest just two!! I cry because I wish he could have lived to experience his beautiful daughters and this breathtaking music!! I never cry for my loss ... I cry for his and his daughters loss ... Bagpipes are weirdly in tune with Mike's energy and I never fail to feel that energy ... and this was a smorgasbord of Mike!!
As a Yank viewing from afar I do so love watching this parade every year. The pride, the obvious family connections, the mix of young and old ... and the stir of the Highlands. I think you all are absolute winners. The heart of the pipes lives in New Zealand.
That young boy , probably 11 YEARS OLD in the second group broke my heart , exquisite control of baton , he marshalled the band as would a veteran and superb control and no narcissism, he was relaxed and in control , a rare attribute
@11 - No doubt about it, you'd have to go a long way to find another that skilled @ Flourishing his Mace! A lot of adults wouldn't even try as dropping a mace on tarmac can easily lead to expensive repairs.
Yes in a competition he would probably score a few points but he would be in great demand for a show as he develops his skills. When he can throw it in the air and catch it behind his back. He will be a great crowd pleaser.
The world celebrates Scotland all the time. Not England, not Wales, not Ireland, but Scotland! From new York to Sydney, everybody loves Scotland. The most ancient country on the planet.
OK! Worldwide pipe bands take note. This is how it’s done! These bands have street presence. Nobody is looking for snakes, eyes are straight ahead. Lines are straight. Bands look serious…..no clown suits, dragon heads or Disney characters. And the adorable wee lassies following with their signs and the braw wee laddies too all set the tone that things in this corner of the world are still sane and that heritage is a worthy touchstone. This is the sort of thing that the civilized world thrives on! BTW….obviously there is a law in NZ that all citizens must join a pipeband. Another great idea from down under.
The stoic grace and deft baton handling of the gent at 37:00 as a young and amazingly talented group of lads and lasses play Scotland the Brave was truly amazing! Thank you for sharing this.
Hi! As I said before, the footage is fantastic. Congratulations, Tim! Just want to give a suggestion for next: If possible, focus momentarily on the boards with the band names so that we can identify them. For people like me, in a country (Brazil) that has no tradition with this wonderful culture, it is very important! Hugs!!! And please, continue with this wonderful work!
Thank you very much, "BrassBanned", for bringing us this show. Especially for people like us who live in countries without this phenomenal culture - We have some bands and the most famous is our Marine Corps band. Hugs from Brazil!
It's good to see the old home town going Scot wae hae. Great one Rotorua chur. Nice vid Tim, enjoyed it very much.👍👍👍👍what a smashing young DM from the 2nd band.
It makes me proud when I was younger and my grand dad told me about the war, he always knew if he was shot down during the raids his mates would come back for him. I know that’s not always the case but men will die to be men for what they stand for
Interesting comments about the band signs. Maybe next time like the Brass Band Australian Nationals held in Gawler Sth Australia 2016. Put the sign carriers out the front. That way the Public get an excellent view of who the band is. Something for the RNZPBA to consider for future Nationals.
The orange lodge does this when our bands are marching. There’s usually 2 flag carriers proudly showing where that bands from which is good as you can put a name to your favourite bands
At 1:36.40 and 1:40:34 These bands demonstrate how much better the band's marching appears when the Drum Major sets a course straight down the centre line of the road, clearly marked, and then uses the corner marker on the road as the turning point. Some of the bands lined up without regard for the centre line of the road, and in every case, their marching looked less tidy.
Not seen a comment about sign bearers being barefoot ! Is there a reason ( plus roads dirt free by looks of soles on feet lol ) Playing is superb by the way :) Well Done All :)
I can't stop watching the Bay of Plenty Pipes & Drums (The 2nd pipe band) because: 1. The little drum major is talented. 2. Whatever song they played is stuck in my head.
Were the bands dispatched in Grade order ? .. A lot of the bands between around 55:00 to past 1:10:00 are clearly playing more intricate selections , and most are numerically larger. Their drone is more contiguous , and after the corner is turned, percussion is more precise ... I dunno. Hail SFU , best on my continent ( and in some years , on all continents 😉 )
So the you don't necessarily have to point the mace in the direction you want the band to turn? Some do it left, some do it right. Great parade BTW, I've loved the pipes since I was a little boy.
Rundown of tunes played maybe someone can fill in the question marks which are tunes I don’t know the name of 1st band? 2nd band jimmy findlater and ? 3rd band cutting bracken and Cullen bay 4th band roses of prince charlie/?/battle of Waterloo 5th Band lets have a ceildh and ? 6th band minstrel boy/?/? 7th band ? 8th band my land/castles dangerous/? 9th band dawning of day/?/? 10th band bathgall Highland games and heights of dargai 11th fleet from flotta/sally Wilson/battle of Waterloo
Well, seems like you had sufficient "bat-trees" but always bring back-ups to events like this. Evidently, the banner carriers marching in bare feet is part of some bygone NZ custom, tradition, nonetheless it was painful watching those little cuties marching on that asphalt without shoes. I know I wouldn't have been able to watch my little baby doing that (barefoot, asphalt). Nonetheless, good job, great video and, again, glad you had sufficient bat-trees.
The pipes and drums band number three should have followed their drum major mase baton signal because leader said go left and not right. 💂♀️💂💂♂️ 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️🩷🤍

I love how the pipes call to my heart, this was amazing thankyou.
Just watching this on new years day 2022 love it my late father was a drum major in the local pipe band
that young lad wit5h the batton was truly amazing , you can tell he is full of pride and rightly so , what a performance!

Incredible, as good as a grown man.. Best wishes and Happy Days to him.
his form was as perfect if anything can be that good! Show them how it's done, brilliant.

I could not agree more and I'm American, coming just lately to the great art of pipe and drum bands.

I love the pipes!
What a fantastic display of piping drumming and street marching. I think NZ is more Scottish than Scotland when comes to pipe bands. I love it.
You on Meth M8 when u wrote that # no one will ever com close two the Scottish Pipes @ Drums
@@scottishalwaysdixie1638 Can you try writing that again
When I was in Catholic school we wore red plaid skirts just like those.. every day
In Scotland growing up my school skirt was a grey kilt with the big pin on it & I absolutely loved it 🥰

New to this. Why do some Drum Major's point the tip left while some point right?

How is that 3/4 March @44:55 named? Thanks in advance
