To be fair, "I can hear the Traveler" and "The Traveler speaks to me" are two *very different* statements. The Speakers could hear the Traveler, but the Traveler didn't speak *to* them. They weren't appointed by Traveler, they didn't relay information given to explicitly them by the Traveler, the Traveler probably doesn't even know they exist. There is no two-way communication between the Traveler and the Speakers, there's just some people picking up the wails of a desperate, frightened God. What he was essentially saying is "Even if I can hear it, it isn't talking to me. I don't know what it wants either."
Correction: The traveler knows they exist. Because it spoke in speaker's voice and with the exact same lines. It was during forsaken subclass quest. But afaik nobody has had two way communication with Traveler, because it is kind of the motto right? "The best voices never let themselves be heard. This lesson is worth teaching again and again". I do hope it finally speaks in final shape though. We are literally inside it now why would that line matter then.
I always assumed the Speaker's admittance was just that of a religious leader. His god doesn't speak to him, but he interprets the gods actions, or inactions, and just tries to make sense of them for the people.
Basically yeah, they aren’t special because “god” talks directly to them, it’s just they’re able to pick up on the Traveler’s Paracausal Vibe, and interpret and relay their intent to the people.
Let's not forget that Rhulk attempts to extract the light from ghosts and kills a giant pile.. Until he is LITERALLY YELLED AT by the Traveler. Closest communication seen in the lore.
I love how byf gives off the vibes of a very old and wise warlock who has traveled far and wide throughout his life and now has many stories to tell the children and guardians.
Constellations is one of my absolute favorite lore books. Between the writing and the content and learning what the traveler feels through the speaker alongside the collapse of humanity, the birth of the ghosts and the fall of the city, its all absolutely beautiful.
I think it should be noted that, in addition to Constellations, there's one final entry to the series: Crow's ship, the Radiant Accipiter, has it's lore tab written as the "last thoughts" of the Speaker, just before he dies. And in it, he mentions specifically that there WON'T be another Speaker, not in the same fashion at least. That he was the last, and that those who wanted to listen to the Traveler directly would be able to, and those who did not, wouldn't. So yeah, unfortunately, there won't be another Speaker. However, I do think that we will communicate with the Traveler directly in the Final Shape, in some fashion.
"There is whispering from the deep-dark, alluring & terrifying--a reminder of things left behind, bittersweet & abhorrent". I know it left the Eliksni, but this makes me think it was talking about the Precursors, I still think its interesting that even tho the Traveler stayed with the Precursors the longest, it didn't speak to them
Considering the timeline, the Precursors (which I equate to The Veiled) were probably the very first civilization it had contact with. Which means that it probably didn't know yet how to go about this beyond using the power of physical creation to accelerate their development.
@@inquisitorichijou883I kinda thought the same thing. When they found it, the Traveler was just half buried, almost like it didn’t know what to do with its existence and then its purpose became helping these people that were struggling to survive. Either that or maybe it did help people before this and it lead to its own kind of calamity. Because the Veil did show them how chaotic the light can be.
@@inquisitorichijou883 It'll be really interesting to see if the Traveler is being piloted by that Precursor that got away before the big merge, or if the Traveler has a mind of its own. With the way the Veil supposedly works, being some kind of massive blob of pure consciousness or something, I wonder if they'll make the Traveler some sort of powerhouse of matter, but with no mind of its own. Being mindless, it might have let a Precursor take it over and direct its power as soon as one of them figured out how to. It's not my favorite theory, but it follows thematically from the "Dark = mental, Light = physical" theme we've been getting since Lightfall and to some extent in Witch Queen.
Bro.... Traveller is dead. The Witness vivisection killed It. It did not, however, kill the source of light and whatever entity is inside the Traveller yet
I really hope that if we do, we see Micah-10 taking a front and centre position in the coming story! She’s one of my favourite characters, and everything about her both pre and post guardianship (and being an exo, and everything else) suggests that she’s the perfect candidate to be a Speaker!
In that first lore book, it mentions "nine impulses - pulling in nine directions", I presume this has never been expended on, but surely nine is far too specific to not relate to The Nine. Cause The Nine will undoubtedly have significance in the future (beyond final shape), and i think it would be very interesting if they were tied to the traveller in some kind of way. Considering the wording, perhaps they act like a guiding council. Or perhaps as reflexes, each sharpened for a purpose, and each acting in a way that best fits the situation. It could also explain the divide in The Nine, that some want to help the guardian, the others dont - some of The Nine, some of the traveller's impulses, wanted to flee. This group used to be majority, agreeing that fleeing was best. But at some poit, the majority swapped, and The Nine decided to stay with humans, with the guardian, and its why they support the guardian as they do. Idk, could be nothing, but i feel like mentioning nine specifically, and not being ambiguous, feels far too specific
@@fonfiff Bungie has more affinity with 7 though. If I were looking for a red herring number I'd personally think of 7 being that rather than 9. And from what I understand the Nine are separate beings from the Traveler and the Witness, existing between Light and Dark. It wouldn't surprise me if they were to be looking to use either or both to create physical bodies for themselves so they can interact with the world
It's definitely the Nine; remember, the Nine are the dark matter shadows of the planets (and presumably sun) of Sol; the traveler exists on that same cosmological scale, so it's quite literally feeling the pull of gravity on itself.
@@jordanmancini Nine has been important to Bungie since the Myth games, actually. There was a group of nine powerful sorcerers who had big implications in the story. They could've gone with seven but they picked nine, and they're doing it again in Destiny. It's not the overarching number for D2 the way 7 was for Halo, but it's still there haunting the lore tabs.
It is interesting that the Speaker's mask has been repaired through Kintsugi. In Season of the Hunt, Crow did actually mention the practice when we examine his hideout in the EDZ.
Can I just point out how hard the OG D2 theme goes. The music as the backing track. For this video "Inner Light" that Brass at 3:36 in the song will FOREVER get my hair standing and as a Trombone player myself...warms my soul like the fires if Mercury! Eyes up....Guardian!
Your point about the speaker's mask being repaired and possibly empowered as a result makes me wish that instead of the exotic class items we're getting in The Final Shape, every class got the Mask of the Speaker as an exotic helmet with the same "Possesses 2 random exotic traits copied from other exotics". Imagine if we brought the mask with us into the Traveller and it turned into our first roll of the exotic when we acquired prismatic/ finally collect all the elements/ abilities and master prismatic. Plus if any object were to have a lore justification for having random rolled double exotic traits a mask that's basically a signal booster & receiver for the Traveller's communications feels like the best bet given Light's chaotic nature.
The Song of Life/Creation that hummed throughout the universe from the Traveler. It was discovered and studied by many civilizations. The Hive had a singer that created the Deathsong from reversing, changing it, and began using it as a weapon. So powerful was the Deathsong that 20 Hive landed upon a planet and began singing it. Within an hour, the planet itself was split in half. The Witness could be planning to use the Deathsong within the Pale Heart to amplify and broadcast it throughout the universe in place of the Song of Life/Creation to wipe the slate clean.
I'd love if the song come back to the front as a major lore point. But it's more likely that the witness plans to take over the traveller to use its terraphorming powers to reshape all the planets he took to the calcified representation we see in TFS.
I think you're essentially right. The writers seem to want to make everything the Witness has look superior to the Hive so they kind of play the role of looking like the Big Bad until the real Big Bad upstages them, but it would essentially be something like the deathsong. Or, another variant on the song of creation that changes everything to suit its opinion of how the universe should look, and then keeps it from changing. Like a song of perversion and fossilization.
The music from beginning to end was nostalgia and legendary at best,. Thank you for creating this video, the speaker is my favorite character at side from cayde

Byf my dude!! Just wanted to thank you for diving into this beautiful, epic, tale of space magic! Destiny has helped me during my hardest times in life!! listening to all the lore and all the adventures destiny has to offer has been amazing! Thank you for your years of dedication Lore Daddy! Haha
the Traveller seeing Dreamers as stars reminds me of the World of Dreams in the Wheel of Time. Many people can enter the World of Dreams in passing, but some people can master the World of Dreams and those Dreamers describe it as endless space populated by stars and each star is another person's dreams that they can view, enter or affect. Inception is real in WoT and it sounds like it's real here too
The Ascendant Plane looks similar to how I imagine the Ways look, though their nature is somewhat different. Toland makes it sound like Tel'aran'rhiod, but characters like Xivu use it more like a simple fast travel dimension like the Ways.
What if Crow is a speaker? He's been gifted by the traveler before, and I believe he's gotten at least one vision from our big white ball: that hawk. It would make sense that a speaker like Crow would be chosen by the Traveler to enter and kickstart its rescue.
2:48 idk y, but this line always hit me n the feels. My man’s just hangin there helpless, and the Traveler is still silent. N ur moment of need, all it can offer is more silent, looming presence. I soooo wish we could go back and play all the story, seasonal story and all, from the beginning. I miss it.
I still standby what I've been saying since this lorebook came out. The reason the player character is such a legendary & powerful guardian is because we're a speaker. We have a closer connection with the Light than most. We may not be the strongest but we are far stronger than most.
So wouldn't this mean that our guardian is, in fact, similar to a speaker? After we fall during the redwar, there is a cutscene that plays. That is very similar to these descriptions of these visions?
Great lore breakdowns as always. One thing to add/note ik you've covered it previously during the season of the hunt. But Crow (Uldren) has had these same dreams of communing with the traveler during the hawkmoon mission and further backed up in the hawkmoon exotic ship. I think itd be really cool if u could tie these plot points together in a future video. Since it could most likely be very important when the final shape releases very soon
My interpretation differs from Byf's a bit at ~11:20, I think the Traveler seeing the "bright, attentive star" is a retelling of the Dreams of Alpha Lupi. Sol itself is the star that caught the Traveler's attention, and when the Traveler speaks to it by moving, that's some kind of gravitational communication, almost like sending morse code through ocean waves but with gravity instead. I think this part refers to the sun rather than a Dreamer because the rest of the account describes the Traveler interacting with the other planets in the system, or possibly The Nine.
i might be wrong but during the final shape gameplay trailer at 1:08 to 1:18 could possibly be the Travelers voices (female exo voice) speaking just like how the witness did in the black garden cutscene with our own voice?
I haven’t played Destiny in years. I think sometime in 2019 was the last time. But I still love watching your videos to keep up with what’s going on in the game. Maybe I’ll actually hop back on sometime soon. For old times sake…..
I was never mad at the Speaker even before Constellations came out. The Speaker never came to us and claimed the Traveler talked to him and said this or that. He just talked in general terms about Light, Dark and how we can help each other or w/e. He never lied as far as I saw.
Say what you want about D2 year 1. But the Ghaul cutscenes are potentially my favourite ones in all of Destiny; especially him saying, “You aren’t brave. You’ve merely forgotten the fear of death.” Then he pushes you off the cliff as the final middle finger
I don’t think there will ever be a new Speaker. He says as much before his death in a lore tab. That the time of Speakers is past. This could be emphasized if we gain the ability to communicate with the Gardner from outside the Traveler, and speak with her whenever. I could easily see Osiris be one that speaks with the Gardner to learn more of paracuasality.
Something interesting about this: lucid dreaming feels more in the domain of Dark than Light, and the Traveller reaching out to minds it can talk to mirrors the Witness and the Hive chasing the Traveler and the moth-to-flame imagery that comes with them.
You'll notice the nine impulses the traveler feels as it glides through space. I've had people try and say the Sun is one of the Nine instead of Pluto. Its so obviously Pluto.
You know, I *really* hope we get some Speaker themed armor for the Final Shape. The main expansion armor set probably should've been it, but for the love of God Bungo. You set that up so long ago, give us our role not just as the Guardian, but as the Speaker.
OMG! In all captions cause woah!!!! I’ve recently been convinced to write my fanfic (please, no hate) about A Speaker… this is gold to me. I have it hashed out, and just uploaded a chapter of the Speaker falling to Ghaul, just a week ago. I am shaking, because I haven’t uploaded more because I’m afraid I’m overstepping some key lore that I have missed because I only started the game a year after 2 came free for PS Plus. Thank you bye! Ive always been fascinated by the idea of Speakers.❤❤ [Edit: my premise for the story was born from the “Growing” chapter in the Constellations lore book]
How does this man give me hope video after video, when I feel there is none. Your amazing byf you should be a actual lore character in the game. A librarian of sorts.
Kintsugi binds that which was broken, together again. There's a reason our system chose that as imagery. Then they released the Precious Scars exotic (we're a titan main) and it just... yeah. The connections we keep finding with the lore and depth of this game are vast and wild.
I dunno if it's really worth mentioning, but during festival of the lost this past year, Imaru said something about other ghosts making out bits and pieces of communication with the traveler (post the witness entering it,) and it's screaming.
Traveler "Take this power Guardian...be brave in dark places" Guardian "more power...hell yeah!!" Traveler 'Heh take that Witness' - Traveler proceeds to double flip off the witness
i bet there are actually multiple speakers simultaneously alive, think of this like Borderlands having 7 sirens at all times, and at some point there will be a plot point where we need to find other speakers or notes of other speaker prophecies/dreams/visions etc so we can get a grand picture of the travellers "thoughts". Like as if the traveller could only explain like a tenth of its grand scheme to people, so it splits it between speakers, and then when the parts are all together, we get revealed who the grand ultimate villian of destiny universe is. Calus was just a greedy tyrant in a ship, the witness is jealous of our potential, savathuun wants to be blind with the power of dark and light and sword logic and cunning....and the speakers when all their knowledge is put together, write the story of the true counterpart of the traveller.
Micah Abram or as they are now Micah-10, with their dreams during the Golden Age of the Traveler and how ghosts would flock to them after they became a guardian. I feel has the most Speaker requirements.
given how this Speaker isn't a Prophet to the Traveler or a Mouthpiece is just more Mysterious, Make you wonder how He'll just be another new character in Final Shape. Either way I'm excited if not astonished.
We know of the Speakers hearing music and Vance hearing music when a guardian dies i really want a music/sound subclass. It makes the most sense as resonance, you could argue it should be a light subclass but it seems to always be a psychic thing, and thats the realm of the darkness
Yea, I loved this lore book because it confirmed that the speaker was 100% lying to just mess with Ghaul

But Crow (Uldren) has had these same dreams of communing with the traveler during the hawkmoon mission and further backed up in the hawkmoon exotic ship. I think itd be really cool if u could tie these plot points together in a future video. Since it could most likely be very important when the final shape releases very soon
The Speakers whole thing was words, he never lied to Ghaul, he just didn't elaborate, hence why he also has one of the best roast in history.
I didnt even open the game in month, but I keep up story wise with all your videos, keep it up, we all love it
My interpretation differs from Byf's a bit at ~11:20, I think the Traveler seeing the "bright, attentive star" is a retelling of the Dreams of Alpha Lupi.
Thank you Byf for the amazing lore videos as per usual, I’d be so lost on Destiny lore if it wasn’t for your channel
i might be wrong but during the final shape gameplay trailer at 1:08 to 1:18 could possibly be the Travelers voices (female exo voice) speaking just like how the witness did in the black garden cutscene with our own voice?
I haven’t played Destiny in years. I think sometime in 2019 was the last time. But I still love watching your videos to keep up with what’s going on in the game. Maybe I’ll actually hop back on sometime soon. For old times sake…..
Now is the best time to do so. There's a lot of free new content out currently.
The speaker being a chad saying kill yourself was great 🤣
let's not forget that The Guardian also has received dreams and visons from the Traveler as well.
Clovis I. Bray being the new Speaker would be hilarious 😂
Good to see the Traveler is aware of the proper use of spoiler tags.
The Speaker mocked Ghaul and his species and he was right, they will end small.
I forgot the tormentors had a grab attack, that’s how long I haven’t seen them do it.
Ive always been fascinated by the idea of Speakers.❤❤
[Edit: my premise for the story was born from the “Growing” chapter in the Constellations lore book]
i knew that the speaker have be lying from the early days of destiny amazing lore video byf ❤
As someone who only started playing in 2021, I hear people saying vanilla d2 wasn't that great, but man I would love to play through the red war
It was good other than the double primary system. Also the red war was actually a dang good story
I think Byf just figured out our Seasonal Artifact for the launch of The Final Shape.
Caydes gun shows signs of kitsugi... but with pure LIGHT instead of precious metals
21:50 I JUST REMEMBERED WE ARE GETTING A NEW PERSON IN THE FINAL SHAPE FOR A VOICE ACTOR SO MAYBE YOUR EXACTLY SPOT ON
Bill Nighy as the speaker was perfect.
Bringing the mask as our artifact would be interesting the more we unlock stuff for it more frequent we hear the travaler while inside the pale heart
Constellations has to be my new favorite lore book.
Watching this like a couple days after the speakers mask exotic was revealed. Hey byb, stop travelling in time. Kthnx love ya bye
How does this man give me hope video after video, when I feel there is none. Your amazing byf you should be a actual lore character in the game. A librarian of sorts.
Micah 10 I believe was one that dreamed, but I don't think we've heard of them since beyond light
imagine if the speaker's mask became an exotic to all classes
Kintsugi binds that which was broken, together again. There's a reason our system chose that as imagery. Then they released the Precious Scars exotic (we're a titan main) and it just... yeah. The connections we keep finding with the lore and depth of this game are vast and wild.
I dunno if it's really worth mentioning, but during festival of the lost this past year, Imaru said something about other ghosts making out bits and pieces of communication with the traveler (post the witness entering it,) and it's screaming.
That knights dodge was insane
Man, i haven't thought about this lore in a while.
Traveler "Take this power Guardian...be brave in dark places"
Guardian "more power...hell yeah!!"
Traveler 'Heh take that Witness' - Traveler proceeds to double flip off the witness
The travellerdoes a kick flip while a raid team dps' the witness
Speaker: "I never said it spoke to me"
*cue trololo music*
Itd be really cool if we the guardian get a chance to wear the mask as a helmet for certain things, similar to a festival of the lost mask.
Right off the bat, a pale glowing bird.
It would be so cool if Crow’s journey lead him to being a Speaker
@9:19 "Tugged in nine directions by nine impulses..."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wild speculation... is Lysander on that lowkey "I am a new Speaker" comeback tour...
imagine if after the final shape, we get a new generation of speakers. thatd be cool
I always believed crow would the next speaker after the hawkmoon quest.
I’m pretty sure he wasn’t a guardians but I really hope his spirit is in the travel like caydes is
i want the speakers mask as an exotic for all classes, it would boost all of our ability uptimes and supers..
21:05 Precious Scars exotic trait is also called kinsugi
SPEAKER GOAT
i bet there are actually multiple speakers simultaneously alive, think of this like Borderlands having 7 sirens at all times, and at some point there will be a plot point where we need to find other speakers or notes of other speaker prophecies/dreams/visions etc so we can get a grand picture of the travellers "thoughts".
I imagine at some point the traveler speaks to us in a physical form would be kinda dope if it was the speaker
Imagine if ghoul was takin inside the traveler instead of being burned up by it like we thought
I hope Bungie willl reconsider the speaker role in the future, the time of a new speaker in the tower might be right behind the corner !
Speakers mask could be the Artifact for Final Shape
I really want to be able to play the red war again, I feel like there's a whole game I paid for that's been taken for me
We know of the Speakers hearing music and Vance hearing music when a guardian dies i really want a music/sound subclass. It makes the most sense as resonance, you could argue it should be a light subclass but it seems to always be a psychic thing, and thats the realm of the darkness
destiny lore as presented by byf > destiny in its entirety
