@Yo Mama Yes it did. That runner's run meant nothing., the only way he mattered was if the batter hits game-tying home run. By getting him off of second, it stopped him from trying to steal signs, which he appeared to be doing if you watched the whole song and dance between he and Jansen.
It still doesn’t matter even if the guy does hit a game tying HR . him on second vs third literally means nothing. so it actually makes a ton of sense to balk him to 3rd if he was seeing a nuisance at second , stealing signs, etc...
Antonio Hernandez it also seems rather inconsequential. they were down by two runs. to have two people score he’s gonna cross the plate anyway so at the end of the day i don’t think it really matters what base he’s on, unless you want two chances at throwing him out i guess
Think about it runner on second 1 out he has a clear sight to the signs if heyward tips the batter of what’s coming and he’s ready there goes a 2 run bomb tie ball game Jansen sent him to third so there was no way the batter would have any chance of knowing what’s coming he had confidence in himself if heyward scored he didn’t care he just didn’t want any chance of a homer happening at all he just wanted to focus on the batters and not having to worry about heyward stealing signs
@GoodRiddanceGooglePlus Correct... all it did was slightly improve the chance of the runner scoring (on a wild pitch, a balk, a bloop single/ infield single, etc.) which, of course, wouldn't affect the game at all -- but it would raise Jansen's ERA. Obviously the game is more important, which is why he made the smart moved and balked him to 3rd.... with that being said, I don't think it's ever easy for a professional athlete to willingly increase the chances of hurting his individual statistics.

That was actually a brilliant idea by Jansen. Never ever considered that before.
Yo Mama runner on 2nd was stealing the catchers signs
@Yo Mama Yes it did. That runner's run meant nothing., the only way he mattered was if the batter hits game-tying home run. By getting him off of second, it stopped him from trying to steal signs, which he appeared to be doing if you watched the whole song and dance between he and Jansen.
Yo Mama didn't teach you a thing about baseball!
Guido Carapellucci exactly
It still doesn’t matter even if the guy does hit a game tying HR . him on second vs third literally means nothing. so it actually makes a ton of sense to balk him to 3rd if he was seeing a nuisance at second , stealing signs, etc...
I have never seen anything like that but I think it is a good strategy and to have confidence in yourself
Antonio Hernandez it also seems rather inconsequential. they were down by two runs. to have two people score he’s gonna cross the plate anyway so at the end of the day i don’t think it really matters what base he’s on, unless you want two chances at throwing him out i guess
Antonio Hernandez I agree
It didn't matter anyways in all reality..
I've been a baseball fan for nearly 30 years and I've never seen that before, thanks for the video. This game, baseball. Brilliant and beautiful.
i love baseball for the little things like this. the little battles that take place every pitch. good stuff

I watched this last night and found it strange that the pitcher shouted "go take your base" to Heyward. I didn't know that he intentionally balked. That's actually really smart. I've never seen this before either.
Go on get.
Wonder if it's gonna happen more often now.
@Daniel Woods how? The run doesn't matter. They are up by 2. He's already in scoring position. A base hit would have scored him from second or third. A homer would have scored him either way. What's the drawback?
@@jameshendrix9262 what the point though, is it just to say "you dont matter"
Hunter Taylor I think it’s more about getting rid of the distraction that could lead to a pitch that could easily tie the game.
This is the kind of commentary we need on live tv.
Yeah, but it's the type of play you can't properly comment on until it's done.
Nice smart solution by Jansen. “Go wait in the car, Heyward.”
I don't understand why he let him go to third. If he is trying to steal 3rd, then let him try to steal. Don't just give it to him.
Barrett Fleming Heyward can read the catcher's signs at second but not at third. That is why when the catcher changed up the signs a bit, Jansen was confused.
Jensen can do that because Rizzo wasn't up.
@@bigskeet did u even watch the video? Like c'mon man
@@bigskeet He wasn't trying to steal 3rd. Heyward's run doesn't matter. Him getting to 3rd isn't particularly helpful for the Cubs. Trying to steal in that spot would be idiotic.

That's what I love about baseball. It's a simple game but you always manage to see something you've never seen before
Damn that cold... badass to have that type of confidence in itself and watch the cricket he running.
@GoodRiddanceGooglePlus You're very inept at baseball knowledge. The guy on second could steal the signs or otherwise distract the pitcher. A base hit with two outs would score him anyway, so balk him to third and neither of the first two problems are problems any longer. AND they still can't sacrifice him in.
Very smart play. It took confidence because if he gave up a hit anyway, that would prove that the runner wasn't the problem. Instead, he basically said "Yeah. I'm getting you out." Bad ass play.
Stop being a shitter.
GoodRiddanceGooglePlus pretty defensive and wordy there, I give the essay a c-, at least you turned something in

Been in and around baseball for 25 years. Never seen anything like that. That's Gangsta. Love it. Thank you for pointing it out!
Most interesting pitching decision since the intentional walk of Barry Bonds with the bases loaded.
Like who is brave enough to throw to that man with the bases loaded, that's is asking to get pulled
That also happened to Josh Hamilton
@GoodRiddanceGooglePlus when exactly was this? His last year in the league? When he lead in intentional walks for the 5th time in 6 years. Yeah, no one was afraid of Barry anymore.
@GoodRiddanceGooglePlus Barry Bonds led the league decisively in intentional walks both of his last two years. Yeah, coming off the injury in 05 dropped his slugging stats but he still hit .275 with 30 bombs in partial seasons.
And why are PEDs a factor here? Many hallers are known to use then, and some even admitted to it several times like Hank Aaron - yet he's a first-ballot. People just don't like Bonds' personal life.
@@verde7595 It's simple, it's a sportswriter award and during the Steroid Era it was the sportswriters trying to find the info. This made PED users be extremely frosty with the media. He won't get in until enough of the voting block didn't have to cover him.

1984, I was coaching a Pony League team and we were up by 8 with 2 out, but they had the bases loaded and our last eligible pitcher walked the next 2, because he was focused on the irrelevant runners.
So I told him to balk. It took a while for him to believe me, but then he followed instructions and balked. And again. And again.
Then I said "now there's no runners, just get the batter."
They got a hit and I was getting nervous, but he finally got the last out.
