The line that is crossed out at 5:04 reads " They cross out this very sentence because it is offensive bum bum piddle winky poo nob nob Hitler Hitler Christ"
but.....that impression was 6 seconds long......and it was about 2 minutes out of a half hour programme. And he was VERY articulate and accurate. How was he obnoxious exactly? He doesn't just have a go at the papers and i don't know what you mean by "too easy a target". How many tv shows called out the daily mail rather than ross?
What hacked me off the most was how when the press wanted to sympathize for Sachs, and disgrace hate Ross and Brand, they ended up nicknaming it Manuelgate. Where is the dignity in naming it after that character? If you want to support and portray him as a frail old man, you can't do that! Sachsgate at least.
@dustymauve "The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum" By Fun Boy 3 (what Terry did next after The Specials, though I'm guessing if you're too young to recognise the song, that'll mean nothing to you either).
3:50 He skips rather lightly over Mary Whitehouse there, her not being around anymore is probably one thing about the media today that's better than it was in the old days.
While I agree with what he's saying for the most part, the manner in which he says it is so damn obnoxious he almost convinces me the "Manuelgate!"-yelling pitchfork-wielders were right
@iamjurell - I haven't had access to the whole episode, so I can't speak to that. As I said earlier I agree with what he's saying, for the most part - it's merely the manner in which he communicates it that irks me sometimes. What I mean by "too easy a target": I take your word few to none TV shows called out the Daily Mail, but for most sensible people it's impossible to take the DM seriously after just glancing at it. He could make a better, less irritating joke than the crybaby one.
As I said earlier, I mostly agree with what he says, but nevertheless I think he oversimplifies his argument and kicks newspapers when they're already down. Newspapers increasingly rely on sensationalism, it's true, but I think for the most part people are too eager just to throw them out, though they still sometimes print good commentary and strong debate. In general that's what I think about rants on television, even refined ones - they tend to shoot too broadly at easy targets.
@GlengarryGlennBeck Now I don't know Brooker personally, but I really hope that he wouldn't put any of his time into Call of fucking Duty. Babby's first FPS and all that. 8/10
The obnoxious, sawy commentary he provides on his subjects of mockery exists to provide humour. I think his comedic rants are intended as a more professional representation of the average, media savvy youngster having a go at obvious absurdities that they see in newspapers or on TV. His rants aren't so much maleficent as they are familiar to the average young person with a bit of rage. Coherent rage is rare, near impossible when displayed off the cuff. This is refined rage, enjoy it.
Plus, his impersonation of a 'crybaby' at 4:21 is reaaaallyyyyyy irritating, even if he is right about the issue at hand. His opponents are flimsy and dislikeable enough - he doesn't need to make straw men of them.
Fair point Charlie and I mostly agree with you. But just one question; would I have been right to complain about comedians like Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson if I had read about their actions second hand in a newspaper?
He pretty much predicted SJW cancel culture. Should've listened.
"That's the end of this bit, now there's another bit"
2:37 to 3:16 is just pure, Charlie Brooker genius.

Does anyone know what the music is starting at 6:14?
@jes79a - He was on it? You must tell me what episode and series.
0:28 radiohead tshirt!
He looks exactly like how I imagine most Radiohead fans do

First time I've seen accurate captions :o

this mans brain thinks better than mine
Charlie's got it wrong here. There were victims in the prank call. Monty Python and the rest were scripted.
The days of yore bit is awesome to anyone who ever worked in media.
Nice segue Brooker.
@GlengarryGlennBeck a genius
@octoberrust85
And don't get me wrong... the first one was brilliant! :3
@Beccar217 that was deliberately staged I think
yeah WATEVA! :D
VISUAL METAPHOR
@ryanhitmanfury He went on Have I Got News For You and was very funny.

What's a Newspaper

@hennimore1 It’s about three actually :P
@nomis101uk It wasn't a genuine audience reaction
@nomis101uk Actors.

Mmm...Wispa bars.
The Brand/Ross thing was on radio, not television.
I fail to see what makes Brand funny. If he was on QI, Mock the Week or Have I Got News for You, he'd be shown up for the fake he is.
@1CCHH1 It'll only get worse.
Fair point Charlie and I mostly agree with you. But just one question; would I have been right to complain about comedians like Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson if I had read about their actions second hand in a newspaper?
Fuck. I just hate most media. All the good things they could do..
How is it that Charlie Brooker manages to be right about everything all the time?
Lol judging someone on their TV persona. XD
So if I happen to agree with what one man says that means I'm not thinking independently? Okay then...
PewDiePieGate is basically this but 8 years later.
